CRA supported a multinational food manufacturer in an annual audit of the company’s UK environmental management programme, developed in accordance with ISO 14001, to assess the implementation and progress of the management system across manufacturing facilities. CRA worked closely with the company’s Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) Manager to develop an annual audit programme for the manufacturer’s facilities across UK and Ireland. The audit programme either targets specific sections of the environmental management system (EMS) or, for new facilities, includes the evaluation of the performance of a facility against all EMS requirements. The audit process included a visit to the facility to observe the operational activities and management of the environmental aspects present at each specific facility, interviews with various personnel with responsibilities within the EMS scope, and evaluation of performance against corporate objectives and targets, and review records (e.g. energy consumption, waste transfer notes, etc.) to ensure accurate reporting and evaluation of compliance with relevant legislation. Each audit was led by an experienced CRA auditor. Upon completion of the audit, CRA generated a report specific to each facility. The report summarised the findings of the site visit and review of documents, outlined the CRA auditor’s observations, summarised any non-conformances identified, and provided recommendations for areas of improvement. CRA also combined the findings from the various facilities into one evaluation report in order to allow identification of any common non-conformances or areas of weakness, and to facilitate continual improvement of the EHS programme as a whole.
