CRA was commissioned by a UK brewing company to develop and deliver a short, practical training course that allowed brewery staff to control spills effectively. The course was delivered as part of the brewery’s permit and compliance management of their operations. The objectives of the course were to improve the staff’s understanding of the risks involved with spills and to equip them to tackle spills using appropriate kits. The classroom-based part of the training provided an explanation of the potential impacts on local receptors that could occur from a series of possible scenarios involving spills of hazardous and other substances used and stored at the site. Delivery of the course emphasised not only the potential for environmental harm but also the associated health and safety risks, potential liabilities and reputational damage. The course included a demonstration that involved use of absorbent materials taken from the site’s spill kits. The practical exercise involved a mock incident where a drum of water, representing oil, was overturned in the yard. The trainees, acting as a team, were required to contain and clean up the spill using the site spill kits. Following this, the team was asked to dispose of the contaminated waste in an appropriately safe manner. The training session was delivered to six groups of brewery staff from different functions and shifts. The aim was to ensure that adequately trained personnel were available to respond at all times.
