2.0 OUR MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS CRA Europe has an integrated EHS management system certified to ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001. We are also certified to ISO 9001 for implementing the QMS of our parent company.
2.1 Quality Management System CRA Europe’s quality system is certified to ISO 9001 and applies the principles of the standard to all of our projects and consultancy activities to ensure that our professional services meet our clients’ requirements. Confirmation that we succeed in meeting or exceeding the needs of four clients is provided by the high percentage of repeat business that CRA Europe enjoys, and the results from our client feedback questionnaire. CRA’s quality commitment to our clients is reflected in our Quality System Policy Statement, which reads: “We will continually improve the quality of our services through a Quality Management System and ongoing training of our employees. Our quality objective on all projects is to exceed client expectations by providing responsive, safe, and cost-effective services.”
2.2
EHS Management System
CRA Europe has operated an environmental management system, conforming to the requirements of ISO 14001, for over 10 years. The system has helped us minimise the environmental impacts of our office-based activities, work at client premises, and our business travel. In early 2012 we developed this into an integrated EHS management system, incorporating elements of CRA’s System of Measurement and Reporting for Technologies (SMART) programme and other health and safety management processes. The new system continues to meet the requirements of ISO 14001 and now also meets the requirements of OHSAS 18001, and is certified to both by the British Standards Institute (BSI). Access our Environmental, Health and Safety Policy Statement from the table below. We also support the CRA Corporate Sustainability and Social Responsibility Programme, and report our environmental and health & safety performance to the group, for inclusion in the corporate annual sustainability report. The reported indicators are based on the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) guidelines.

SECTORS WE SERVE Oil and Gas
3.2
The Oil and Gas sector is diverse, and faces a wide range of environmental challenges. Upstream activities face increasing scrutiny from the green lobby, as operations extend into undeveloped and sensitive environments. Investors are demanding more information on strategies for all aspects of sustainability, including climate change and biodiversity. Emissions trading and increasing regulation, especially after the Gulf of Mexico disaster, are placing greater demands on EHS teams.
Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals
The Chemical and Pharmaceutical sectors have evolved into numerous sub-sectors that include commodities such as petrochemicals, polymers and agrochemicals, and more recently speciality and life science chemicals. The sector therefore faces a wide range of environmental and sustainability demands.
Downstream, the operations associated with an extensive portfolio of a site presents risks of land contamination and environmental damage, requiring site investigation and remediation. In addition, acquisition and divestment activities demand due diligence risk assessment. CRA support some of the UK’s leading Oil and Gas companies, providing services to upstream and downstream operations, and at all project stages. Types of companies we work with include:
Large-scale processing companies are subject to environmental permitting, and industry-lead schemes such as “Responsible Care”. Companies also have to integrate demands into the regulatory and quality regimes applied specifically to their industry. These require compliance with a wide range of conditions including environmental management and health & safety systems. CRA supports Chemical and Pharmaceutical companies with raw material receipt and storage, production and distribution, plant modifications, decommissioning and demolition, and business or site acquisition and divestment. We work in the following sub-sectors:
Exploration and Production Gas Storage Refining and Pipelines Distribution and Retail

3.3
Transport and Distribution
The Transport and Distribution sector faces diverse and increasing environmental challenges. These can range from land development issues to the implications of the Carbon Reduction Commitment.
3.4
Power and Utilities
The construction, modification or demolition of facilities and infrastructure may require planning approval and the submission of complex environmental statements. Their operation may also be subject to the Environmental Permitting and COMAH regimes. Investors and corporate customer, have increasing expectations for the development and operation of sustainable and low carbon facilities and infrastructure systems. There is an increasing expectation that operators in the sector will monitor, manage and report on their own sustainability performance and potentially have their findings independently validated.
The power sector in the UK includes traditional large-scale electricity generators (coal, gas and nuclear) and a range of renewable energy suppliers, for example, onshore and offshore wind, hydro, and energy from waste. Energy companies are required to manage environmental performance through legal measures including Environmental Permits. Environmental performance is, however, not a simple matter of legal compliance. The widespread adoption of environmental management systems (typically conforming to the ISO 14001 standard) has lead companies to develop and adopt formal procedures to improve continuously the management of their environmental impacts. A wide range of stakeholders are now interested in environmental issues, and environmental performance has become a very important part of robust corporate management.
CRA work closely with transport and distribution companies to understand their needs at strategic and project level. Types of companies we work with include:

Land and Property
3.6
Food and Drink
The land and property sector is currently undergoing significant changes in its regulation, including changes to the planning regime and the introduction of further environmental requirements. Mounting commercial pressures, including the cessation of a number of tax incentives means that stakeholders who are buying or remediating environmentally impaired sites face ever increasing costs. Management of financial and other risks is commonly facilitated by using a phased approach to the purchase process. This approach includes due diligence, carefully targeted intrusive investigation and, if required, the design, implementation and verification of remedial works.
The Food and Drink sector continues to experience an increasingly significant change in the way it is regulated, and also has to meet the increasing expectations of stakeholders, in particular retailers and investors, for corporate responsibility. Large-scale food processing and intensive agriculture are now subject to the environmental permitting regime, with direct regulation by the Environment Agency, and need to comply with a wide range of permit conditions. Stakeholders increasingly expect food producers to implement environmental management systems, develop and report on corporate responsibility strategies, and support initiatives such as the Courtauld Commitment and various sustainability programmes.
CRA supports companies throughout the land and property sector, including commercial and residential developers, financial organisations, land agents and civil engineering and construction companies. We have extensive project experience with:

Manufacturing
3.8
The manufacturing sector is seen as being outside of the production activities associated with the Chemical & Pharmaceutical and Food & Drink industries. It has evolved and diversified and includes the engineering and assembly of consumer goods, and also the activities of the electronics, automotive, and aerospace industries, amongst others. The sector faces an assortment of environmental and sustainability demands. In the current economic climate there is also a developing trend towards business acquisition and divestment which requires appropriate support with due diligence risk assessment. CRA supports companies throughout the manufacturing sector with raw material receipt and storage, production and distribution, plant modifications, decommissioning and demolition, and business or site acquisition and divestment. We work in the following sub-sectors:
Aerospace Automotive Building and infrastructure products Electronics and telecommunications Household products Medical Metal production Paper and pulp Printing

Waste
The waste sector has experienced significant challenges over the past decade with both changes in regulation and a change in focus away from landfill to alternative waste management options. The almost universal acceptance of the waste hierarchy has resulted in huge changes to the way in which individual companies consider waste management. This in turn has provided opportunities for waste management companies to provide services increasingly higher up the waste hierarchy. Stakeholders increasingly expect waste operators to implement environmental management systems, develop and report on corporate responsibility strategies, and support initiatives such as various sustainability programmes. CRA has extensive experience of providing support to the waste sector, including permit applications, compliance, emissions monitoring and modelling, odour assessment, resource efficiency, and BAT studies. CRA supports companies throughout the sector, including in:

OUR SERVICES Environmental Compliance CRA works closely with clients to offer support with the identification and management of environmental compliance issues. We can also provide training for your staff to help them maintain an awareness of the ongoing management needs with environmental compliance demands.
Environmental compliance (that can also include key aspects of health and safety) can be defined as conformity with rules, regulations and procedures typically imposed by Regulators, or other key external stakeholders (e.g. consumers and clients), and internal corporate management systems. Noncompliance or non-conformity with environmental demands may have serious business impacts, directly through environmental clean-up costs, payment of fines and other unplanned costs, and indirectly via reputational damage. It is therefore an important business priority for an organisation to manage its activities effectively in order to comply with environmental requirements.

Contaminated Land implementation and verification. Where appropriate, CRA liaises with regulators to agree robust, cost-effective solutions.
It is essential in today’s environmentally conscious world that property owners manage contaminated land issues. Land impacted by contaminants frequently forms the unseen financial and environmental liability associated with developing, owning or operating facilities. The financial and reputational costs associated with poor contaminated land management can be prohibitive. Regulators are increasingly scrutinising contaminated land management procedures and increasing the pressure on operators with poor practices. CRA’s technical expertise in contaminated land management allows clients to quantify their risks and prioritise their actions. We offer a complete range of contaminated land services including: Phase I due diligence assessments; conceptual models; ground investigation; human health, controlled water and gas riskassessments; and remedial design,
CRA has been a global leader in contaminated land management since its involvement with the Love Canal Project, a New York State land remediation project which kick-started the US contaminated land industry. CRA lead the remediation of the site in 1977 and remains involved in monitoring and evaluation. CRA has also developed specialist data collection tools and services, including automated field data collection and processing and GIS applications, to support our land management work. Environmental Impact Assessment Statement and consultation with regulatory authorities and appropriate stakeholders. We can provide support throughout the entire process. The output of the process can be tailored to suit a wide range of stakeholders.
Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is a key requirement for many large-scale development projects. It is used to understand the potential positive and negative impacts of major projects on the environment, and increasingly upon society in general. The EIA allows decision makers the opportunity to consider the environmental impacts of a project before any major decisions and commitments are made. The assessment generally leads to the production of an Environmental Statement (ES) that will accompany a Planning Application for consideration by the relevant authority. CRA works closely with clients to add value through effective management at key stages of the EIA process. Our services range from feasibility studies, through screening and scoping, to the production of an Environmental

Information Management
Managing and understanding true environmental performance and its related data is an increasing burden placed on organisations. Regulation and increasing stakeholder expectations requires robust data to be collected more quickly and for an everwider range of issues, including greenhouse gas emissions, chemical hazards, due diligence and corporate responsibility. Poor data management and the poor use of data can result in failures in operational management and subsequent prosecution, loss of reputation and significant costs. CRA’s technical specialists provide guidance on data needs and the methods for collection in order to meet specific regulatory requirements and to comply with sector initiatives or reporting
standards. We can provide personnel who will work with our clients to develop data management processes, and collate and process data. CRA provides IT-based data collection tools and services, including automated field data collection and processing, and GIS applications. CRA has also developed tools that are tailored for corporate data collection and aggregation, which can provide verifiable data for corporate reporting. Property and Asset Management health and safety risks, characterising site plant and equipment, and managing the contractor procurement process.
It makes sound business sense for companies to manage their property and other assets effectively. Plant and property must be properly inspected and maintained to minimise risks during operational life and, once production lines cease to be economic, or facilities reach the end of their design life, changes need to be made to maximise returns. Property is a valuable asset but that asset cannot meet its full potential as host to redundant facilities. CRA works closely with clients to maximise returns through the efficient use of valuable assets. We add value through the effective management of decommissioning and demolition projects; minimising and controlling
