MANUFACTURING Verification of Corporate Report to GRI Guidelines Global Ferrous and Non-Ferrous Metals Producer
Project Summary
Verification of Corporate Report to GRI Guidelines Global Ferrous and Non-Ferrous Metals Producer
Key Project Elements • Supporting the Development of the Data Collection Process • Verifying Site Indicator Data • Benchmarking the Use of Indicators in Sector GRI Reports • Verifying the Corporate Report to GRI Guidelines and Protocols
CRA supported a major global metals business in the production of its first corporate responsibility report in 2008, conforming to the Global Reporting Initiative G3 principles for reporting, and has continued to contribute to the development of the reporting process. Initially the project included the development of a data collection process to be used by the company’s site staff for collating sitebased data, for ultimate aggregation, for inclusion in the corporate report. CRA produced a data collection workbook to guide the site staff in the type and extent of data required to comply with the GRI requirements for the selected indicators. Web-based training was provided to site staff, to ensure familiarity with the workbook. CRA auditors visited all the organisation’s manufacturing sites, located in Europe and North and South America, to verify the site data. A sampling approach was used to test the data for conformance with the GRI principles. A benchmarking exercise was undertaken of GRI-based corporate responsibility reports produced by other mining and metal sector companies, to provide guidance regarding the standard of reporting by competitors. The indicators selected and the level of detail provided to support performance claims for each indicator were reviewed, and the findings aided the company in the development of its own report format and content. The KPI data set was expanded for 2011 to include indicators from the following GRI Mining and Metals sector indicator sets: • • •
Environment Labour Product responsibility
• •
Human rights Society
CRA continues to verify the corporate responsibility report against the GRI guidelines and issue a verification statement. CRA’s own verification process was designed to meet the GRI requirements for verifiers.
