STRATEGIC WATER USE AND MARKET RESEARCH DESKTOP STUDY
KEY PROJECT ELEMENTS
CENTRAL AND WESTERN UNITED STATES
Shale gas water sourcing and treatment methods Projection of shale gas flowback and produced water generation rates Identification of alternative markets for mobile water treatment technology
CLIENT: CONFIDENTIAL DURATION: 2011-2012
Conestoga-Rovers & Associates (CRA) was requested to collect and evaluate information regarding exploration and production (E&P) water supply and demand within various gas shale plays of the United States, including the Eagle Ford, Haynesville, Bakken, and Marcellus shales. CRA collected data concerning current gas shale water sourcing and treatment methods, anticipated flowback and produced water generation rates, and potential technology and strategies for reuse of flowback and/or produced water. CRA collected available information from sources online and from other databases, including:
Texas Railroad Commission (TRRC) database of petroleum exploration and production (E&P) operators in the Eagle Ford gas shale play
Ground Water Protection Council (GWPC) voluntary public disclosure database of frac fluid constituents
TRRC database of reported injection volumes of flowback and produced water by county, for Texas counties in the Barnett, Eagle Ford, Barnett-Woodford, and Haynesville gas shale plays
Public research reports of projected water use in Texas, Kansas, Louisiana and other states, associated with petroleum E&P activities
CRA also assisted the client with investigation and evaluation of alternative markets for mobile water treatment technology. CRA focused the market research on identification of current and anticipated water treatment demand within non-petroleum industries, such as mining, and other energy production. CRA continues to work with this confidential client, providing engineering and design assistance to the client on project opportunities that resulted from the initial market research effort
