DESIGN REPONSE The site at 46‐58 Marlborough Street presents itself as an exciting development opportunity. The mixed use of residential, retail and commercial spaces requires a well crafted, and thorough solution. Carlisle St and its surrounding area is characterised as being an established residential area with large pockets of commercial, retail and community areas, and small pockets of industrial areas. There are many heritage properties in this area. The subject site itself is not in a heritage overlay. However, its southern border is facing several signifi cant heritage properties. The design response on this southern border should respect this in an appropriately sensitive manner. The major principal public activity streets in the area are Carlisle St and Chapel St. To the west Carlisle St leads to other principal public areas such as the St Kilda Activity Centre and Acland St Activity Centre. In the search for inspiration, two projects,Ningbo Tengtou Pavilion andNingbo Museum (2008).The Ningbo Museum is constructed of bricks salvaged from buildings which had been demolished to facilite new developments. Wang is a keen supporter of architectural heritage where globalisation has stripped cities of their special attributes.Wang creates modern buildings making use of traditional materials and applying older techniques. The idea of "seamlessly meshing the contemporary with the cultural" has guided the project to reshape this area.
RESEARCH & INSPIRATIONS A siheyuan is a historical type of residence that was commonly found throughout China, most famously in Beijing. In English, siheyuan are sometimes referred to as Chinese quadrangles. The name literally means a courtyard surrounded by buildings on all four sides. Throughout Chinese history, the siheyuan composition was the basic pattern used for residences, palaces, temples, monasteries, family businesses and government offices. In ancient times, a spacious siheyuan would be occupied by a single, usually large and extended family, signifying wealth and prosperity. Today, many remaining siheyuan are still used as housing complexes, but many lack modern amenities.
