Vice President - Campus Services
Dear NIRSA Members, Welcome to Georgia Tech! What an honor for us that you are playing your 2017 Regional Championship in our Campus Recreation Complex (CRC). Our award winning CRC is the home of the McAuley Aquatic Center where the 1996 Olympic swimming and diving compeititons were held. We are also home to earlier National Intramural Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA) tournaments. A department of Georgia Tech’s Office of Health and Well-Being, the CRC is an example of Georgia Tech’s culture of healthy living. During your stay, you will likely see students, faculty and staff enjoying our activities and facilities, ranging from weight training in our fitness center to rock climbing and swimming. If time permits, I encourage you to visit our campus and see some of the rich hisotry that is Georgia Tech. You might see our world-famous and beloved mascot, Buzz. You will see our Ramblin’ Wreck, our 1930 Model-A Ford, in the lobby of the Georgia Tech Hotel and Conference Center. Listen closely on Friday and you may hear The Whistle, believed to have come to campus in 1896, as it steam whistles out the end of classes at five minutes before the hour. If you can’t see all of campus, come back after your tournament. In the meantime, good luck to all, play hard and enjoy your visit to Georgia Tech! Sincerely,
Paul A. Strouts Vice President for Campus Services

CODE OF CONDUCT The Code of Conduct shall serve as a standard for how individuals are expected to behave when participating in a NIRSA Championship Series event. Students and staff enrolled in an institution of higher learning assume an obligation to conduct themselves in a manner compatible with the college/university’s function as an educational institution. When involved in an event sponsored or endorsed by the NIRSA Championship Series, the participant indicates, by his or her registration in the event, he or she agrees to represent his or her club/ team and college/university in a way that does not detract from the reputation of the institution he or she represents, and to act morally and display sportsmanship-like behavior, before, during and after any competition. Guidelines of conduct include, but are not limited to, the examples outlined below. Guidelines of conduct include, but are not limited to the examples outlined below. Participants shall not: • Use drugs, except for medical purposes, while traveling, competing, socializing and/or using facilities including lodging spaces. • Consume alcohol while traveling, competing or spectating. • Attend any part of the tournament or tournament events while intoxicated. • Strike, attempt to strike or otherwise physically abuse any individual. • Intentionally engage in or incite participants and/or spectators to engage in abusive or violent conduct. • Participants cannot use verbal or non-verbal profanity, disrespectful language, obscene gestures or behavior; bullying and homophobic, and transphobic expressions of any kind are strictly prohibited. • Violate any rules or policies of the NIRSA Championships, Tournament Hotels/Facilities, or city, state or governmental entities. Violation of the Standards of Conduct may result in: • • • • • •
Suspension from the game/match; Suspension from the Tournament; Forfeiture of any individual or team awards; Ejection from the Tournament hotel(s); Ejection from the Tournament site or any tournament sponsored event; Forfeiture of all games/matches won and possible team elimination from current and future NIRSA sponsored or endorsed events; • Liability for all monetary damages arising from, or caused by, a participant’s conduct while participating in, and attending, a NIRSA Tournament. • Notification to University Officials for any violation of the Standards of Conduct by an individual or team. 8 | crc.gatech.edu
NIRSA Championship Series Eligibility Requirements Players must be enrolled for the minimum number of hours (listed below) for at least 45 days prior to the start of the championship event. • Undergraduates – minimum of ½ full-time enrollment status • Graduate – minimum of six credit hours If a player is graduating the term of a NIRSA Championship Series event, and is enrolled for less than the minimum hours required for eligibility, then a letter from the registrar stating that the player will be graduating the same term of the event should be submitted along with the other registration materials. For NIRSA Championship Series events that occur during an academic break, the preceding term will be used to determine eligibility. Participants from schools on the quarter system must meet the eligibility requirements of the half time enrollment for both the current and the preceding quarter. Players are limited to six appearances in NIRSA Championship Series/NIRSA National events or appearing on a varsity roster (squad list) per sport. These appearances can be nonconsecutive, but after any six appearances on a varsity (squad list) or tournament roster in the same sport eligibility is exhausted. • Beginning in the fall of 2010, anyone participating as a first-time participant has six years of eligibility per sport at NIRSA Championship Series/NIRSA events. Players that have appeared on a NIRSA Championship Series/NIRSA roster in the same sport between the fall of 2005 and spring 2010 also have six appearances that can also be nonconsecutive. Any players that appeared on a NIRSA Championship Series/NIRSA event roster or on a varsity “squad list” prior to the fall of 2005 are no longer eligible to participate in NIRSA Championship Series/NIRSA events. If a player has appeared on a “varsity squad list” at any two-year or four-year college varsity team in the same sport, this also constitutes a year(s) of used eligibility. If a student played on a varsity squad in the same sport for two years, they still have four appearances left at NIRSA Championship Series/NIRSA events (so long as their team doesn’t exceed the maximum number of varsity players). Players must not be listed on the varsity roster (or “Squad List”) in the same or related sport for the current academic year. • Exceptions may be granted to any player that was listed on the roster for less than three weeks. • If a former varsity player has been listed on a varsity roster or “squad list” for four or five academic years, that player is not eligible for NIRSA Championship Series competition until after one full academic year has lapsed from the final academic year they were listed on a school’s varsity squad list. • Participants who are members of a ‘squad list’ for a varsity team of the opposite sex are eligible to participate in NIRSA Championship Series events provided they meet all other eligibility guidelines. Participants will not be considered a current or former varsity player for the NIRSA Championship Series events due to being listed on varsity ‘squad list’ for a team of the opposite sex. The following matrix can be used to clarify eligibility and classification: On a Varsity Squad List for: Eligible to compete Label as former varsity # years of NIRSA Championship Series eligibility remaining

NIRSA Championship Series Eligibility Requirements contd. Players must not have been declared a professional athlete in the same or related sport. • A professional athlete is one who receives any kind of payment, directly or indirectly, for athletic participation, or who has participated in competition with a professional team. • A professional athletics team is any organized team that provides any of its players more than actual and necessary expenses for participation on the team and/or declares itself to be professional. The NIRSA Championship Series expects participation to be based on one’s self-identified gender and that it is done in good faith and is consistent with a player’s expressed gender identity. • A participant’s gender identity will be applied when there are gender specific rules or player ratio requirements for co-rec divisions. • Transgender individuals may play on the team that best matches their gender identity. • The campus official who approves the team entry on the roster/player certification form should verify the gender indicated on the form is based on the participant’s selfidentification and expressed gender identity, not purely on the sex indicated in official school records. • Player eligibility will be based on the gender identified on the official team roster. • NIRSA recognizes that, for many, coming to know one’s gender identity is not something that happens in an instant; it is a complex process that can occur over an extended period of time. Transgender participants are encouraged to communicate their gender identity with the campus official who is responsible for approving the team entry on the roster/player certification form prior to the tournament registration deadline. Should the player not feel comfortable working with that campus official, the individual can contact the tournament director or the NIRSA Director for National Sport Programs and inform them of their status at least three business days prior to the tournament Team Eligibility All team players must attend the same institution from any two or four year degree-granting college or university. • Teams representing military installations are eligible to compete, so long as all members of those teams are assigned to the same military installation. • Teams are limited to number of former varsity player(s) (listed below) they can register. A former varsity player is defined as a student who has been listed on a “school’s varsity squad list” for any 2-year or 4-year college/university team for more than one academic year: • Basketball – 1 athlete • Flag Football – 2 athletes • Volleyball – 2 athletes • Tennis – 1 athlete • Soccer – 3 athletes A participant may only be listed on one team roster at a NIRSA Championship Series Events unless a Co-Rec division is offered. • Participants may be listed on one Co-Rec roster and one single-gendered roster. • Teams with players on both Co-Rec and single-gendered teams in a tournament should plan on having enough players to play games simultaneously. • Co-Rec and single-gendered teams may be scheduled at the same time. 10 | crc.gatech.edu
NIRSA Championship Series Eligibility Requirements contd. • Individuals who identify as a woman are eligible to play on women’s and co-rec teams; individuals who identify as a man are eligible to play on men’s and co-rec teams. Transgender participants are eligible to play based on their expressed gender identity so long as they comply with all Player Eligibility Guidelines. Regional/National NIRSA Championship Series events Student Officials Eligibility • Officials must meet the same enrollment eligibility criteria as players throughout the NIRSA Championship Series event: half-time for undergraduates and at least six hours for graduates at their representing institution. Pool Play Tie-Breaker Protocol Teams will be placed in 3- or 4-team pools. Each team will be scheduled for 2 pool play games. The top two teams from each 3-team pool will advance to the single elimination Championship Playoffs. The top three teams from each 4-team pool will advance to the single elimination Championship Playoffs. Tie-breaker for 4-team pools: 1. One team will have a record of 2-0 and will be the team that finishes first in the pool. 2. There will be a two-way tie between two teams with records of 1-1. a. Forfeit: a team that forfeits is dropped to the lowest possible play among the tied teams b. The team that won head-to-head among the tied teams will finish second in the pool c. The team that has the highest point differential (difference between total points scored between total points allowed) between the tied teams will finish second in the pool Tie-breaker for 3-team pools: 1. If a 3-way tie exists, it will be decided as follows: a. Forfeit: a team that forfeits is dropped to the lowest possible play among the tied teams b. The point differential will determine the final order of finish. For example, A defeated B, 7-0; B defeated C, 7-6; C defeated A, 13-6. Thus Team C finished in first place, Team A finishes in second place, and Team B does not qualify Team A

c. If two teams have the same point differential, then who beat whom in head-to-head will determine playoff placement d. If all three teams have the same point differential, then the total points scored will determine playoff placement e. If two teams have scored the same number of points then who beat whom in head-tohead competition will determine the playoff placement f. If all three teams have scored the same number of points, then the fewest points allowed will determine the playoff placement g. If two teams have allowed the same number of points then who beat whom in head-tohead competition will determine playoff placement crc.gatech.edu | 11
Protest Procedures Rule Interpretations Protests involving misapplication or misinterpretation of a rule will be considered, but judgment calls will not receive any consideration • A player, directed by the team captain/coach, may request and be granted a timeout for the purpose of the team captain/coach and the game official’s reviewing a decision, which may have resulted from misapplication or misinterpretation of a rule • Such requests must be made prior to the time that the ball becomes live following the play to be reviewed, unless the period has officially ended • When a timeout is granted, the game official will confer with the captain/coach only. The captain/coach will inform the officials that s/he would like to protest and state specifically the “correctable error” that s/he believes has been made. If the officials agree the protest is valid, the Director of Officials and the Officials’ Committee staff member on that game will be called upon to make a final decision • If the conference results in the referee altering his/her ruling, the opposing captain/coach will be notified, the revision will be made, and the timeout will be ruled as an official’s timeout. If the referee’s ruling prevails, the timeout is charged to the team requesting the team requesting the protest. If the requesting team has no more timeouts, a delay of game penalty will be assessed • All decisions made by the Official’s Committee will be final Eligibility • Protests concerning player eligibility must be made to the Tournament Staff or game officials immediately upon discovering that there is an eligibility issue • Tournament Staff will assume responsibility for investigation of eligibility of all participants upon request • An ineligible player is any person who does not meet the tournament’s eligibility requirements and/or whose name or identification number does not show up on the team roster • All participants must provide a valid picture ID card prior to each game they are going to play. If an individual cannot provide valid identification, s/he will not be eligible to participate in that particular game • Any person participating in the tournament found to be ineligible will be suspended from the tournament • Any team using an ineligible player will forfeit ALL games in which the ineligible player participated • NOTE: if this occurs during pool play, teams that may have lost to said team will be • awarded a win. If this occurs during single elimination play, teams that have been • eliminated will not advance in the tournament • If a player is participating under an assumed name, his/her team will be suspended from the tournament • All teams using ineligible players will be reported to their respective institutions and NIRSA
