David E. Balk is Professor in the Department of Health and Nutrition Sciences at Brooklyn College of CUNY and Director of the Graduate Program in Thanatology. He is Editor-in-Chief of the Handbook of Thanatology: The Essential Body of Knowledge for the Study of Death, Dying, and Bereavement (ADEC, 2007) and recently co-edited Adolescent Encounters with Death, Bereavement, and Coping (Springer, 2009). He also serves as an editor of Death Studies, a peer reviewed professional journal. The Dame Cicely Saunders Celebration honors the life of Dame Saunders as founder of the modern hospice movement. She established St. Christopher’s Hospice in London in 1967 to meet the physical, social, psychological and spiritual needs of dying patients and their family/friends. A nurse, medical social worker and finally also physician and writer, Saunders is acclaimed for improving end-of-life care around the globe.This event celebrates her life work on what would have been her 91st birthday (June 22, 1918 - July 14, 2005).
