Animal Models in Toxicology

The Chemistry and Pharmacology of Opioids from a NonOpium Source

Edited by

Edited by

Animal models are utilized in biomedical sciences to help us understand and predict responses in humans in toxicology and pharmacology, yet their use remains a source of significant controversy. This volume explores the many facets of the use of animal models in toxicology. Individual chapters cover the major species and review current laws and regulations governing animal care and use in major countries. This edition includes new chapters on telemeterized animals and imaging and adds a section on transgenic animals. Animal Models in Toxicology, Third Edition also contains extensive appendices of acronyms, regulatory and scientific websites, animal suppliers, and a lexicon of terms.

Robert B. Raffa Temple University School of Pharmacy, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA

Morphine and other opioid drugs are extracts or analogs of compounds isolated from a single source— the opium poppy (Papaver somniferum). However, biological diversity has given rise to an alternative source. Specifically, at least two alkaloids isolated from the plant Mitragyna speciosa—and their synthetic analogs—display pain-relieving activity. Kratom and Other Mitragynines: The Chemistry and Pharmacology of Opioids from a Non-Opium Source presents an introduction to the chemical and biological properties of these agents and discusses the nature and extent of their use and abuse. The book covers the topic from phytochemistry, medicinal chemistry, and pharmacology perspectives and describes current research in computer modeling of the binding to the various opioid receptor sub-types.

Patricia B. Hoyer The University of Arizona, College of Medicine, Tucson, USA

Today, we are exposed to an increasing number of chemicals in the environment and there is a growing awareness of the effects of these chemicals on the ovaries. Infertility resulting from environmental exposures may not be obvious until the reproductive life span is waning. As such, the potential for xenobiotic-induced infertility needs to be better understood. In recent years, research into chemicals that have the potential to cause early menopause by destroying pre-antral ovarian follicles is gaining greater appreciation. Ovarian Toxicology, Second Edition represents a compilation of chapters prepared by researchers who have substantially contributed to our understanding of the impact of xenobiotics and environmental factors on ovarian function. The second edition substantially updates newly investigated ovotoxicants as well as improved mechanistic insights that have emerged since the first edition. This resource is ideal for scientists in academia, regulatory agencies, and industry who would benefit from a survey of the impact of xenobiotic chemicals on ovarian function.
