Automotive Engineering Vehicle Dynamics, Stability, and Control Second Edition Dean Karnopp University of California, Davis, USA Series: Dekker Mechanical Engineering

Anyone who has experience with a car, bicycle, motorcycle, or train knows that the dynamic behavior of different types of vehicles and even different vehicles of the same class varies significantly. For example, stability (or instability) is one of the most intriguing and mysterious aspects of vehicle dynamics. Why do some motorcycles sometimes exhibit a wobble of the front wheel when ridden "no hands" or a dangerous weaving motion at high speed? Why does a trailer suddenly begin to oscillate over several traffic lanes just because its load distribution is different from the usual? Other questions also arise: How do humans control an inherently unstable vehicle such as a bicycle and how could a vehicle be designed or modified with an automatic control system to improve its dynamic properties? Using mainly linear vehicle dynamic models as well as discussion of nonlinear limiting effects, Vehicle Dynamics, Stability, and Control, Second Edition answers these questions and more. It illustrates the application of techniques from kinematics, rigid body dynamics, system dynamics, automatic control, stability theory, and aerodynamics to the study of the dynamic behavior of a number of vehicle types. In addition, it presents specialized topics dealing specifically with vehicle dynamics such as the force generation by pneumatic tires, railway wheels, and wings. The idea that vehicles can exhibit dangerous behavior for no obvious reason is in itself fascinating. Particularly obvious in racing situations or in speed record attempts, dynamic problems are also ubiquitous in everyday life and are often the cause of serious accidents. Using relatively simple mathematical models, the book offers a satisfying introduction to the dynamics, stability, and control of vehicles. Catalog no. K15916, January 2013, c. 326 pp. ISBN: 978-1-4665-6085-7, $139.95 / £89.00 Also available as an eBook

Thermodynamics

Diffusion and Mass Transfer James S. Vrentas and Christine M. Vrentas

The Principles of Thermodynamics N.D. Hari Dass

The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, USA

Chennai Mathematical Institute, Siruseri, Tamilnadu, India

A proper understanding of diffusion and mass transfer theory is critical for obtaining correct solutions to many transport problems. Diffusion and Mass Transfer presents a comprehensive summary of the theoretical aspects of diffusion and mass transfer and applies that theory to obtain detailed solutions for a large number of important problems. Particular attention is paid to various aspects of polymer behavior, including polymer diffusion, sorption in polymers, and volumetric behavior of polymer–solvent systems.

The book is about thermodynamics, which is the science of how heat affects bodies. The book starts with the primitive notions of heat and temperature, and systematically develops all the major principles governing this science. It then discusses a number of applications, like osmotic pressure, believed to be behind the way plants and trees pump water, the way solids melt and liquids boil, and more.

The book first covers the five elements necessary to formulate and solve mass transfer problems, that is, conservation laws and field equations, boundary conditions, constitutive equations, parameters in constitutive equations, and mathematical methods that can be used to solve the partial differential equations commonly encountered in mass transfer problems. Jump balances, Green’s function solution methods, and the free-volume theory for the prediction of self-diffusion coefficients for polymer–solvent systems are among the topics covered. The authors then use those elements to analyze a wide variety of mass transfer problems, including bubble dissolution, polymer sorption and desorption, dispersion, impurity migration in plastic containers, and utilization of polymers in drug delivery. The text offers detailed solutions, along with some theoretical aspects, for numerous processes including viscoelastic diffusion, moving boundary problems, diffusion and reaction, membrane transport, wave behavior, sedimentation, drying of polymer films, and chromatography. Presenting diffusion and mass transfer from both engineering and fundamental science perspectives, this book can be used as a text for a graduate-level course as well as a reference text for research in diffusion and mass transfer. The book includes mass transfer effects in polymers, which are very important in many industrial processes. The attention given to the proper setup of numerous problems along with the explanations and use of mathematical solution methods will help readers in properly analyzing mass transfer problems.

It develops, in a way that can be comprehended by a wide audience, subtle notions like entropy with which we can tell whether atoms in a body, which we cannot see at all, are behaving in an orderly or disorderly manner. It is the behavior of this entropy that also explains why we never get younger, only older! Many learning tools like examples, problems to work on, are added to provide a systematic aid to those wishing to master this science. This single book will act as a complete text book to students, complete manual to teachers, and an inclusive source of reference to experts and teachers.

Selected Contents: The Primitives: Heat and Temperature. The First Law of Thermodynamics. In Search of Perfection: Perfect Refrigerators and Perfect Heat Engines. General

Fundamentals of Electrical Engineering Charles A. Gross and Thaddeus A. Roppel Auburn University, Alabama, USA

Real-world engineering problems are rarely, if ever, neatly divided into mechanical, electrical, chemical, civil, and other categories. Engineers from all disciplines eventually encounter computer and electronic controls and instrumentation, which require at least a basic knowledge of electrical and other engineering specialties, as well as associated economics, and environmental, political, and social issues. Co-authored by Charles Gross—one of the most wellknown and respected professors in the field of electric machines and power engineering—and his worldrenowned colleague Thad Roppel, Fundamentals of Electrical Engineering provides an overview of the profession for engineering professionals and students whose specialization lies in areas other than electrical. For instance, civil engineers must contend with commercial electrical service and lighting design issues. Mechanical engineers have to deal with motors in HVAC applications, and chemical engineers are forced to handle problems involving process control. Simple and easy-to-use, yet more than sufficient in rigor and coverage of fundamental concepts, this resource teaches EE fundamentals but omits the typical analytical methods that hold little relevance for the audience. The authors provide many examples to illustrate concepts, as well as homework problems to help readers understand and apply presented material.

A First Course in Differential Equations, Modeling, and Simulation Carlos A. Smith and Scott W. Campbell

Modeling and Control of Engineering Systems Clarence W. de Silva

University of South Florida, Tampa, USA

University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada

Emphasizing a practical approach for engineers and scientists, this text avoids overly theoretical explanations and shows readers how differential equations are derived by applying basic physical principles and experimental observations to engineering systems. This resource also covers classical methods for obtaining the analytical solution of differential equations and Laplace transforms. In addition, the authors discuss how these equations describe mathematical systems and how to use software to solve sets of equations in which analytical solutions cannot be determined. Numerical values are provided in all examples and problems.

This text provides a unified treatment of the modeling of mechanical, electrical, fluid, and thermal systems and then systematically covers conventional, advanced, and intelligent control, instrumentation, experimentation, and design. It takes an integrated approach to modeling multidomain systems that draws from equivalent circuits, Thevenin’s theorem, and linear graphs. It also presents important aspects of laboratory experimentation, including control system instrumentation. The author discusses the use of MATLAB®, Simulink®, LabVIEW™, and the associated toolboxes and includes numerous real-world examples, problems, and exercises.
