Live It Learn It offers 30 fun and exciting academic programs at over 20 of the most important sites in Washington, DC. We work closely with educators at our partner sites to develop rigorous and engaging activities that are interdisciplinary, age-appropriate, and aligned to Common Core standards. We also provide all instruction, curricular materials, and transportation for each program. Essential question Why did the Civil Rights Movement march on Washington, DC?
Pre Trip Lesson This lessons situates the students at the March for Jobs and Freedom. First they explore the protest signs to learn the different people are marching. Then students explore the “I Have a Dream” speech through primary source documents and activities that connect Martin Luther King Jr.’s words with actions and events of the Civil Rights Movement.
The Big Day Students are equipped with a smartphone and instructed how to use an engaging app to explore the Martin Luther King and Lincoln Memorials. Students complete a mission by answering questions and taking photos using the quotes and architectural features of both memorials.
Post Trip Lesson As a culminating activity, students incorporate the photos taken on the trip into a scrapbook that will be used to analyze their experiences exploring the March on Washington. Students also test their knowledge of King and 20th century U.S history as they compete in a collaborative review game and take written assessments.
