I
love this issue. In fact, I think it’s my favourite edition yet, and am very grateful to my staff for their contributions to the editorial, advertising and design; as well our as advertisers who enable us to provide you this magazine for free. Please support them. Constance Hall as our cover feature is pretty exciting. That girl has guts! I admire how true she is to herself and the realities of motherhood, not to mention she’s supportive and nurturing towards her ‘Queens’ – Facebook mums from all walks of life. It’s interesting Constance talks about an increasing tendency for postbirth slimdown to be seemingly more important than the creation of another
life, as does our Funny Mummy columnist, Ari Chavez in “Amazing Grace”. “Let’s Talk About Sex, Baby” is fascinating for the voyeurs like myself. Ann Marie Bradstreet investigates polyamory (and I learnt a new word!) and how other couples keep the intimacy alive by involving other people. I love anything Spiritual, so was intrigued to read about the miraculous healing results a Perth medical doctor is experiencing since implementing Reiki to her practise. Many of us are prone to wrapping our children in cottonwool so I thought “Challenging Your Children” was excellent, in that it explores the
benefits of kids taking risks and facing challenges, in order to grow. We also have a couple of special features in this issue - our annual Having a Baby feature, a good checklist for expecting mums; a special Christmas Gift Guide to stimulate gift ideas; and a Getaway Guide for traveling with the family in your state. You might not realise you can now get every Offspring issue delivered to your inbox before it hits the streets; you just need to sign up to our newsletter on our website offspringmagazine.com.au Kate X

For daytime occasions, a little vampire goth with a touch of pretty floral brings new life to a traditional spring get-up. Hall you can’t say that!

hen I asked my friend Nina if she’d heard of Constance Hall, her eyes took on the kind of look I normally reserve for chocolate desserts. “I’ve pre-ordered

her book!” she said.
“Con talks about parenting like it really is. She says we should
embrace our queenliness, not our failures. We should be helping each other, not judging each other. So that’s why I like her. And because she says ‘fuck’ a lot.” Constance Hall, tragicomic blogging queen, has an army of Facebook followers that includes Ashton Kutcher. Her page’s comments are full of women enjoying a good swear. Her critics are also vocal and vicious. Constance has broken ground by breaking the Mummy Rules flagrantly and frequently. You know the Mummy Rules. Did you change yourself to keep them? They may be unspoken, but break them, and maybe no one will chat with you at the school gate or invite your kid around for play-dates. There are consequences, so you stick to the rules. Unless you are Con. “This is who I am,” she says, simply. Her warm, husky voice makes me remember conversations shouted over loud music with my arms around friends. “I’ve always been a big swearer. I have strong opinions, and I don’t really hold back. “I noticed, as soon as I became a mum, that I was expected to just lose a huge element of myself. I found that really strange. So, I never changed. I got judged a lot. “I think people naturally would love to judge you, but once you have a kid, people feel like they can judge 20

you, because you’re not just controlling your life, you’re controlling the kid’s as well. So it gives the judgy parents these open gateways to go to town on you. The only thing that I do differently is that I don’t really care.” Actually, Constance’s notoriety is
based on how much she cares – about connecting honestly with other mothers. And Constance is well-qualified to talk about motherhood. As well as a teenage step-daughter, she has four small children: Billie-Violet (aged 7), Arlo Love (5), and twins Snow (a girl) and Rumi (a boy, 2). On her blog, she describes how her twins were conceived a month after separating from and reconciling with her husband, right after making a decision not to have any more kids. Constance chronicled her struggles on Facebook, and it turns out that many parents appreciate her irreverent candour. As she put it, her writing went “as viral as herpes”.
I noticed, as soon as I became a mum, that I was expected to just lose a huge element of myself. I found that really strange. So, I never changed. I got judged a lot. It would be easy to dismiss this former Big Brother contestant as an attention-seeker if she didn’t have such important things to say. Supermarket magazines feature celebrity post-birth slim-down speed records, as if weight loss is a more important achievement than the creation of a new life. Constance shares pictures of her mum-body in underwear with nothing sucked in and talks about self-love. “I think we’re allowed to love our bodies,” she says. “I had a realisation after having the twins – that my whole life, I had put a lot of value on my weight. Even my psychologist said to me one day, ‘You know, all you ever say is that you’re going to lose some weight, and then you’re going to do this and this and this. Maybe losing the weight isn’t the answer.’ And I was like, ‘What? It’s always the answer! Losing five kilos makes everything better!’ “Having the twins played a huge part in realising that, because I was almost defenceless. I was stuck. With all my other kids, I was like, ‘Okay, cool, I’ve got one baby, I’ll go back to work.’ I lost the weight, I did everything

Six months later I felt so different about the world, myself – everything. It was really quite healing.” Now Constance has put her mummy manifesto down on paper in her book, Like a Queen. When asked why she decided to publish her work, Con said, “There are a lot of trolls on the internet. It’s a nasty place. “There were things I wanted to say about my relationship with Bill, about things that happened during motherhood that were either too long for a post, or they were too intimate, or they were

But while I was writing the book, I felt really uninhibited because I realised that the person who would be reading it would be a beautiful woman lying in bed, flicking through pages with a glass of wine. It’s not a horrible arsehole on the internet just waiting for the chance to tear me down. So it was much more of an intimate experience between me and my girls.” This from a woman whose website features a picture of herself on the toilet, who has described post-birth incontinence and the size of her nervous poos. Constance, there were details you were holding back? “You get so much hate on the internet. I’ve talked about infidelity, and all of a sudden I get fifty emails from these arseholes going, 22

I spent all my time in ugly flannelette PJs, feeding the Child, who had an abnormally large appetite, and not sleeping because he never slept. Ever. And I didn’t give a hoot, because I’d grown my own pumpkin, survived the horror mov-ie birth and he was mine. Well, I probably did give a hoot, actually, but I was too sleep deprived to do anything about it. So there’s that, I guess. All of that.

Let’s talk about sex baby! BY ANN MARIE BRADSTREET
Or, alternately let’s talk about the lack of sex parenthood seems to inspire. Let’s examine the factors creating such a dismal correlation. I’ll go first – with my full and diverse life filled with nappy changes, school runs, regular incidences of one of my three children vomiting or urinating in my bed at midnight, and amusing myself each day with an enduring mountain of washing, could it be related that I find my libido is a wasteland? Cue tumble weeds and a haunting whistling wind. 28

She is more relaxed when Téa is in the hospital ward or at gatherings surrounded by children with similar issues. “It’s nice because you can kinda plonk them down together and they touch hands and make little noises to each other. It’s really cute. All the parents understand what’s going on.” She pauses and adds quietly, “Your kid’s not the weird one.” Giulia credits Danny, her stepson Jamie, her parents and close friends for providing much-needed assistance. “My parents are very supportive. We settled on the German created balance bike - FirstBIKE. The choice was easy. It has state of the art safety features, which is paramount to me, and my son was able to design his own bike (green and silver of course with a blue basket), which is paramount to him. Honestly, I’m not a mechanical whizz, but the FirstBIKE was super easy to put together - straight out of the box and just one tool, which is included.

It’s surprisingly light too, although it’s one thing I haven’t had to carry around too much when my son gets bored of it - because he never ever does! Now all his little friends have a FirstBIKE too. They have even formed a little bike gang in our neighbourhood - ‘The Bike-ateers.’
So we set off to our local park. Things started a little shakily - with me that is. I was nervous, it was his first big boy toy and I wasn’t sure how he’d handle it. While I grappled with this thought he gripped the

A typical “proper clothes” outfit would be something along these lines. First, there were the skinny jeans with long boots, emphasising these elongated legs she’d sprouted. Then, there was the active wear top that looks like a sports bra, worn under an oversized sweater with the specific purpose of allowing her fellow tweens a glimpse of strap on shoulder. And finally, given the age for ear piercing had been settled as 12, the magnetic stud earrings, not just one on each lobe mind you; another

Finding out you are having a baby is without a doubt one of life’s most exciting experiences – but it can also be overwhelming when you start thinking about everything you need to do before you welcome your bundle-of-joy into the world. CHANGE TIME Changing nappies is something you do a lot when you have a newborn, so it is important to have everything you need to make this task a simple one. The first decision to make is if you want to put your baby in disposable or cloth nappies.
Disposable Disposable nappies are very convenient – no washing, drying or folding required. You can get nappies easily from most shopping centres and when it comes to change time; you just chuck out the dirty nappy and put a new one on your baby. Easy!
Cloth Modern cloth nappies are so easy to use. With either press studs or Velcro, they are easy to change (no sharp and fiddly nappy pins). They are also easy to take care of. You store the
NAPPY BAG Goodbye tiny clutch or sleek handbag and hello nappy bag! Never fear, gone are the days of the ghastly bulky nappy bag (there are now a range of design options and some look like designer handbags). However, the baby bag is an essential item when you go out-and-about with your baby. Consider the following: • The style – yes, of course style is important! This bag will essentially replace your handbag so ensure you are happy with the look. However, remember that other people are likely to be using this bag too (for example, your partner or the grandparents). • Get two baby bags if possible. It is handy to have one to use and one that is packed and ready to go in the second car, ready for

product stems from the tradition in Finland where mums-to-be were given a box of baby essentials. As well as housing clothes and accessories for the baby, the box that the goodies came in is used as a sleeping place for the baby (without the lid of course), with a fitted mattress making this specially designed box a very handy option.
The cot Walk into a baby store and you could be overwhelmed by the number of cots to choose from – it’s not a simple choice between timber and white! Some cots may have clever storage options and drawers. Some may have the option of converting into a toddler bed or a day bed. It is important to ensure the cot you choose meets Australian Standards – and that the cot mattress is clean and fits snugly.
Linen Cot mattresses can vary in size – so check the measurements of your mattress before you buy sheets and then buy at least two sets – one for the cot and one in the wash. TIP: Safe sleeping: SIDS and Kids does not recommend using pillows, doonas, soft toys, cot bumpers or lambswools in the cot. An infant sleeping bag is a handy option – and ensures your

Décor You don’t have to have the baby’s room complete and perfect by the time they are born (many parents choose to keep the baby’s cot in the parents’ room for the first year), but the décor available is just irresistible!). A theme is a great way to bring a room together and looks very effective – but you don’t have to go overboard. You can introduce colour or animal/pattern theme simply by adding a few well-chosen key elements – perhaps some wall art, linen in your chosen colour/theme a floor rug or accessories on a shelf. Cleaning – When you are recovering (especially from a c-section) housework will be very low on the list of priorities. If you don’t have a partner or family close by to help, organising a reputable house cleaner (even just to do the floors and the

Preparations are best to start early (such as keeping pets out of the baby’s room or on the furniture). When the baby has been born, bring home a blanket the baby has been wrapped in so your dog gets familiar with the new scent is often recommended. Enlisting the help of some friends or a dog walker/pet sitter to take your dog on extra walks or give some extra attention during the early weeks is also a good idea. Siblings – A new baby can be a big adjustment for an older child, so make some preparations to help ease the change. Organising some special outings with friends or grandparents for your older child is a great idea when you are busy with the

By guiding our children through appropriate, challenging situations, providing a stimulating environment, and encouraging risk-taking, we help the child’s brain form problem-solving templates they can draw on when faced with difficulties and roadblocks in life. This can provide the child with confidence in dealing with life’s unexpected events and the resources to recover from setbacks, 56

“Children’s brains are primed for learning in the early years, and experiences in the first five years lay the foundation for future learning and development.”
EMOTIONAL REGULATION So what does challenging and stimulating our children mean, and how do we do this? One researcher described this as “temporarily destabilising” children; briefly raising their excitement levels above normal so they learn to manage this situation (with our support) and return to emotional balance. This teaches emotional regulation, a vital part of resilience. www.offspringmagazine.com.au
With older children, this can include physical play with a degree of unpredictability – chasey and play wrestling, as well as friendly scaring and teasing games and use of humour. Babies need more care with appropriate support and safety, but can be gently stimulated by slow movement through the air, lifting, and bouncing on your knees or tummy. The golden rule is of course safety, and checking in with your child to ensure they

Eat FOOD & NUTRITION
and be
happy! BY KATE BULLEN
Take a trip to your local market to stock up on fresh fruit and vegetables to improve your mental health and happiness. Fresh fruit and veggies contain important carbohydrates, B Vitamins and antioxidants and we can’t expect tablets to provide us with the same results.
R
ecent research from Australia and England measured 12,000 people’s happiness and wellbeing. The research focused on whether there were improvements in people’s
wellbeing after eating more fruit and vegetables. People were asked a few questions about how often they ate fruit and vegetables and how much they ate. Two years later they were asked the same questions. The outcome was positive for those who had increased the amount of fruit and vegetables, resulting in increased happiness and wellbeing. Why am I writing about food and happiness? We know mental illness is common. Around 20 per cent of Australians experience a mental illness in any year. Teenagers and young adults (18 to 24 year olds) are most likely to show signs of mental illness of any age group. If we can set up good eating habits now for our children, then this could help reduce and improve their happiness, and maybe improve their mental health. Of course food is just one part of improving our mental health and happiness. There are many, many

can affect our mood. Fruits and vegetables with a low glycemic index release glucose in a slow and steady fashion which may help to regulate our moods and our happiness. Unlike highly processed food (think: lollies, cake, biscuits) which give that sugar hit that we can all relate to (think: kids just came home from a birthday party) usually results in a pretty big crash in mood. So, slow and steady

2. B VITAMINS Fruits and vegetables are great sources of B vitamins, including folate and vitamin B6. These two vitamins are again important in our brains making serotonin and other chemicals that affect mood. Low levels of B vitamins may be linked to depression. As an aside, Vitamin B12 is also an important B group vitamin in helping making serotonin and other neurotransmitters. Vitamin B12 is not usually found in fruits and vegetables, but instead in fish, lean meat,
