OFFICIAL WELCOME Canberra is a world city, our capital and an exciting place to do business. It’s a city bustling with innovation. Cutting edge researchers, Nobel Prize winners, executives, federal politicians, innovative thinkers, artists, media figures and business leaders all call our great city home. It’s this mix of interesting people that makes Canberra a city of knowledge, culture and influence – a city which visitors remember. And it’s easier than ever to get here. A new Canberra International Airport with international flights to Asia, New Zealand and now Europe, opens our city to the world. The world is taking notice, only helped by the 2018 Lonely Planet ranking that highlights a city worth exploring. Canberra is a dynamic city, abundant with prestigious establishments and national treasures such as the Australian War Memorial, the National Gallery of Australia and Parliament House. Our national story is held within their walls, making them ideal places to host conferences and events. THINK Canberra and the Research and Learning Institutes Group (RALIG) were established by the Canberra Convention Bureau to connect your events with these institutions, and more, and the people who work there. If you haven’t been here for a while, you’ll quickly discover that the city is in the middle of an evolution. Popular precincts such as NewActon, Braddon, Manuka and Kingston buzz with activity. Pop-up stores, award-winning architecture, lively brew pubs, cultural festivals, music and public art are at the heart of our city which has something to offer everyone. Likewise, Canberra continues to forge its reputation as Australia’s powerhouse of information, and justify its title as the ‘Knowledge Capital’. The city is home to five of Australia’s top ranking universities and a range of research centres. Canberra’s relatively smaller size is its advantage. Access to places and people is easier than anywhere else in the country. Our city was designed for ease of movement and collaboration. With the help of the Canberra Convention Bureau, you can access all of Canberra’s unique offerings to design an event program that will inform, entertain, inspire and impress. Canberra is a world city, our capital, and we look forward to sharing it with you.
Michael Matthews Chief Executive Officer Canberra Convention Bureau

Canberra is at the heart of a fascinating and beautiful region. The desirable cool climate wine region is on the city’s border, as are a number of rural villages. In a few hours you can be standing on a beautiful South Coast beach with its glittering blue water and white sand, or exploring Australia’s alpine country in the Australian Alps.
48
CANBERRA COOL CLIMATE WINE REGION Cool climate wineries in the Canberra district have much to offer, with intimate cellar door experiences where you can meet the wine maker. There are more than 30 boutique cellar doors within 35 minutes drive of the city. Often, the winemaker, who deeply knows and understands the cool climate varieties they grow, will serve you. Canberra is a well-respected cool climate wine region. The range in temperature, vineyard elevations, soil types and the winemaker’s skill combine to create wines that win recognition nationally and around the world.
Vineyards surround the city in land that has a great variation in altitude and micro- climates that make it unique as a growing region. With vineyards up to an altitude of 850m, every classic variety performs exceptionally well somewhere in the region. The region produces outstanding Shiraz and Riesling, and many other varieties also thrive. Shaw Vineyard Estate, the largest vineyard in the region, also produces Cabernet Sauvignon and Riesling.
Canberra region winemakers are perfecting a wide range of alternative varieties and styles. Look out for Mount Majura Vineyard’s Tempranillo and Graciano, Lark Hill Winery’s Grüner Veltliner, Surveyor’s Hill Touriga Nacional, Lerida Estate’s Zenzi Rosato Frizzante and Granitevale Estate’s Pink Ice, a vibrant dessert wine made from Shiraz.
The Shiraz Viognier from Clonakilla is a true icon of the region, receiving countless accolades and setting a benchmark for the blend around the country. Clonakilla’s wine maker Tim Kirk sees the wine as liquid geography, an expression of that place’s altitude, climate, soils, grapes and people combining to produce a unique geography.
