AUTUMN 2 01 5

Welcome

E D I T I O N

Welcome to the Autumn edition of Coopers Street Magazine. In the previous publication I wrote about the upcoming General Election and what effect this might have on the property market. It seems that locally things are indeed pretty buoyant. A recent report revealing the 10 areas of the capital where house prices have risen most during the past year shows Hillingdon has knocked the Olympic borough of Newham off the top spot. According to the latest Land Registry figures, average house prices in Hillingdon have risen by 14.6% to £348,000. Hillingdon remains the sixth cheapest London borough and is attracting those priced out of districts such as Ealing and Hanwell. The Crossrail effect has also helped drive up prices, with the borough set to gain two stations along the high-speed rail route. This will significantly cut journey times into the centre of London from West Drayton and Hayes & Harlington. The Government are increasingly regulating the lettings market. On the 14th of September the Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Regulations were discussed in the House of Lords and approved. This meant that from the 1st of October 2015, every rented property in England must have a working smoke alarm

installed on each floor of the building. On the commencement day of a new tenancy the alarm must also be checked to make sure it’s working, whilst a carbon monoxide alarm must be installed in rooms containing a solid fuel burning appliance (open fire/log burning stove etc.). Penalties for non-compliance are £5000 per property. Rules surrounding getting possession of your rented property back have also changed with the section 21 form changing, as well as the terms in how you serve this notice. This extra regulatory burden for landlords adds extra importance when it comes to choosing who to use as your managing agent, as the consequences for making the wrong move can be very problematic. Of course, should you need any advice with any of the new regulations, just contact your local Coopers branch and we’d be more than happy to help. Enjoy the issue!

of engineering From Steinway & Sons, the creators of the world’s finest pianos, comes the Steinway Spirio, a superior player piano system of unparalleled accuracy

S

teinway & Sons have revealed their latest masterpiece of engineering; a player piano system offering the most accurate reproduction of live performances ever achieved on their pianos. Steinway Spirio, which the company describes as “the most significant product innovation in over 70 years”, uses patented technology to replicate the motions of the piano player. Developed in partnership with Wayne Stahnke, the system’s modular design is integrated within the piano during manufacture at Steinway’s New York and Hamburg factories. The components of Spirio do not impact on sound or touch, and the easily-maintained application is designed to last the lifespan of every instrument. “Innovation and craftsmanship have served as the core tenets of the company,” explains Michael Sweeney, CEO of Steinway & Sons. “In today’s marketplace, brands like ours must continue to innovate in order to remain relevant to the world around us.” “Even the artists who have recorded on the instrument agree the Spirio captures the true essence, nuance and soulfulness of a live performance, allowing us to bring artists and their audiences closer than ever before,” Sweeney adds.

To mark this advance in piano technology, the manufacturer is recording a new, high-resolution catalogue of tracks, reflecting a comprehensive canon of musical styles. Spanning over 1,700 pieces, the collection is provided to Steinway Spirio owners at no extra charge, with additions to the catalogue automatically added to the system’s user-friendly application when they are released. Time was, when you were considering buying, selling, renting or letting a property, you could anticipate your estate agent of choice to place a notice in their window, or advertise in the classified section of a newspaper to reach the widest audience. Technological advances have expanded the possibilities property marketing affords. Thanks to the internet, the marketplace is now as wide as the world’s online reach, and houses and flats can now be virtually explored through audio, video and images. And one company is moving forward in the process of rolling out a pioneering approach to the way properties are bought, sold and discovered: the microsite. A first in the world of property marketing, the microsite technology has been developed in-house at the Cambridgeshire headquarters of The Cream Club, a progressive marketing company who specialise in the creation and implementation of online video solutions for a constantlyexpanding client base of independent estate agents around the UK. This innovative aspect of property marketing builds on the success of Cream’s established product line, incorporating online TV channels showcasing professionally-produced video walkthroughs of an agent’s portfolio of properties. These guides still form the heart of the new generation of websites, and are enhanced by an increased element of interactivity.

In addition to sharing the microsite link via Facebook and Twitter, a property seeker can compile a playlist of prospective new homes, search for relevant properties more dynamically, and arrange appointments to view the property. Guides to the local area, and the services the agent provides, are also incorporated in each microsite. These form just a part of what has been tailored as a more engaging experience for microsite users; an experience which will continue to evolve, with plans in place to implement property postcards, personal photo galleries, 3D floorplans and interaction with high-end brands already in the pipeline. In essence, the lifespan of the microsite will go beyond the transaction. It is anticipated between 200 and 300 agents nationwide will introduce microsite technology over the coming months, with Coopers among this exclusive group of market-leading and award-winning agents. As one of the prominent exponents of property TV channels, we are looking forward with great anticipation to embracing this new development in online property marketing as part of our high-standard customer service.

Stepping through time From perfectly polished brogues to a comfy pair of slippers, shoes play an intrinsic part of our everyday lives, but as the Victoria & Albert Museum’s exhibition Shoes: Pleasure and Pain shows, footwear can tell the world who we are, and give us power. F

ive years in the making, Shoes: Pleasure and Pain was the brainchild of Helen Persson, Curator of the V&A’s Asian department. “She discovered an opulently decorated pair of 19th century shoes made for the Indian elite in one of the V&A stores,” reveals Lucia Savi, the Research Assistant for the exhibition. “She realised that the message these shoes were conveying about the wearer was the same as in many other cultures and historical periods.” The Victoria and Albert’s own collection of shoes is arguably unparalleled, and includes shoes which span over 2,000 years in age, from every corner of the world. By combining pieces from their own collection with shoes from other international and private collections, Helen and her team have created a colourful and informative exhibition filled with over 250 pairs of shoes, each with their own historical and cultural significance. “Shoes, perhaps more than any other aspect of dress, express our personality and our passions,” says Lucia. “Adorning the feet has long been a way for a wearer to reveal their identity and their position in society. For centuries and across cultures, the elite and the wealthy have worn luxurious and ornamental footwear, demonstrating their importance with a lack of concern for comfort or function. The aspirational have worn stylish shoes to elevate their status as well as their bodies.” Set across two floors, the ground floor gallery of the exhibition explores three key themes associated with shoes: transformation, status and seduction. The opening section looks at the significance of shoes within fiction and folklore, and in particular the transformative power associated with them. “Extraordinary footwear appears in folklore from all over the world. In these stories, our choice of shoes has consequences and can reveal our true selves,”

explains Lucia. “Shoes punish and reward, elevate and entrap, speed and hinder through their powers of transformation.” The exhibition features shoes from what are considered to be two of the most well-known stories. The Red Shoes by Hans Christian Andersen tells the tale of a girl whose vanity consumes her as she becomes obsessed with her red shoes. She is cursed by an old soldier so that her shoes will dance continuously, but cannot be taken off. In the end, the girl chooses to have both her feet and the shoes cut off. The story was used as inspiration for a film of the same name made in 1948, and the red ballet slippers made for Moira Shearer, who played the lead role, are on display as part of the exhibit. The other story is, of course, the fairy tale Cinderella, a story Lucia notes is “the most international shoe story, and possibly the oldest.” She explains, “the tale of the ‘slipper test’ can be traced back to 1st-century Egypt. From Asia to Europe and through the cultures of the indigenous people of the Americas, Cinderella’s magical slippers are always splendid, and teach little girls the importance of shoes. They can transform not only a girl’s appearance but her entire life, and help her find true love.” Most recently, Walt Disney produced a live action film of Cinderella, and the Swarovski slipper made for actress Lily James, who plays the titular character, can be seen in the Transformation section of the exhibit. Aside from the obvious transformative themes of the narratives, The Red Shoes and Cinderella also feature both the pleasure and the pain shoes can bring. This is perhaps more obvious in The Red Shoes, with the girl initially

27 enjoying the compliments and the attention her red shoes bring, but soon descending into despair when she cannot remove them, and having to endure the pain of having her feet removed. Similarly, in some versions of Cinderella, the ugly sisters are said to have cut parts of their feet off to try and fit into Cinderella’s glass slipper, so they can have the ultimate pleasure of becoming the Prince’s wife. However, it isn’t just fictional stories associated with shoes that the exhibition taps into; it explores the story behind the visual aspect of shoes, looking at the process involved in making them, right from the initial design to completion. Bringing this idea to life are animations showing how the layers are assembled, design sketches, materials and shoe lasts, including those created for Princess Diana by H. & M. Raynes. Visitors can also enjoy a film featuring interviews with five designers and makers, including Christian Louboutin. While shoes have had stories built around them throughout history, Lucia reveals that a particular pair of shoes being displayed actually disproves a well-known story. “It was especially thrilling to be able to borrow a pair of white Ferragamo pumps once worn by Marilyn Monroe, and which dispel the common myth that she reportedly used to wear shoes with differing heel heights in order to achieve her trademark ‘wiggle’ as she walked.” Whether designed for practicality or visual pleasure, it is clear a pair of shoes is much more than something you put on your feet. Intentional or not, each pair will carry the story of their creation, and some, like those worn by Marilyn Monroe, may even become part of the story of the person wearing them, because as Lucia says, “every pair is unique and carries its own personal story.” Shoes: Pleasure and Pain at the V&A, runs until 31 January 2016, sponsored by Clarks, supported by Agent Provocateur, with additional thanks to The Worshipful Company of Cordwainers. he sport of kings; the oldest and most dangerous team sport on earth; polo has always been seen as one of the world’s most glamorous games. Now as we approach the winter months, it’s time for the snow polo season. The idea of playing polo on snow was originally conceived in 1959, when a group of locals founded the St. Moritz Polo Club in Switzerland, however the game was not officially played until 1985, when under the stewardship of polo visionary Reto Gaudenzi, the first match was contested on the frozen Lake St. Moritz. The sport has grown in popularity since, and is now played across Europe, the Americas and Asia; and is rapidly becoming more and more widespread throughout the world. Snow polo takes place on a smaller field (the pitch in St. Moritz measures 80 by 200 metres compared to the 182 metres by 274 metres of an international grass polo field), and the game is played with a bigger rubber ball, whose bright red colour makes it easy to see amongst the white snow, but

whose movement differs greatly to the wooden ball used in the traditional version of the game, adding to the skillset required of the players. Although actually slower due to the conditions, the matches appear quicker because of the more confined playing space, making it an exciting spectator sport. As the only high-goal tournament played on snow, the teams for the Snow Polo World Cup St. Moritz are chosen based on their sportive potential, with international patrons asked to submit their teams to the tournament management for selection, guaranteeing high quality action throughout the four days of competition. And it’s not just the sport that attracts the crowds. As Christian Gartmann, Director of Communications and Media at Snow Polo St. Moritz told me: “Since its premiere in 1985, the Snow Polo World Cup St. Moritz has been the benchmark – as the world’s only high-goal tournament on snow – and as a world-class social event.”

In January 2015, 12,000 spectators attended the event in the Swiss ski resort known as the ‘playground of the rich and famous’, which is often credited as inventing the winter tourism industry. Enjoying over 300 days of sunshine a year, the resort is popular with the international jet set, boasting first-class hotels, top international boutiques along the stylish shopping boulevard of Via Serlas, as well as excellent restaurants. Gartmann explains: “Insiders arrive a few days early, or leave late. The Engadin valley offers breath-taking views as well as world-class skiing and mountain dining.” Behind the scenes though, the resort is a busy place. Ice specialists work hard to prepare the grounds in a safe and timely manner, setting up the field, spectator areas, grand stands, towers and various tents to very specific static protocols due to the limited buoyancy and elasticity of the ice; while the ponies arrive some ten days prior to the tournament

to adapt to the snowy grounds, the cold temperatures and the thin air. The animals are closely monitored by a team of veterinarians, and are protected from injury by a special horseshoe with a rubber liner, which prevents ice forming in their hoofs. And then there’s the players. As the short film by Swiss-South African filmmaker Xaver Walser, ‘Second to None’, which was filmed at this year’s event and published worldwide in February shows, only one thing matters to the competitors - winning. Winning is something Swiss polo player Tito Gaudenzi is used to. Son of Reto, pioneer of the first Snow Polo event, the Miami-based player agreed to talk to me about the upcoming 14th Valartis Bank Snow Polo World Cup in Kitzbühel, a small medieval town in Austria, of which he is both a competitor and a member of the organising committee. Sadly the opportunity to travel to Miami never arose, so an exchange of

e-mails is the closest I get to the experiencing the life of one of the best polo players on the planet - he was named Most Valuable Player at the 2005 Snow Polo World Cup, and has just captained Team Switzerland at the FIP Arena Polo European Championship in Azerbijan. It’s immediately obvious from his correspondence that Tito is a smart and articulate young man – he’s fluent in four languages, and is Co-Founder and President of Blackdove, a technology platform based in the arts sector. He’s also busy. Answers to my questions have to be delayed as he travels to Baku for the European Championships, and then again as my e-mails get lost amongst a sea of correspondence. When he replies, of course apologising profusely for the hold-up, his responses are short and to the point, as one would expect from a graduate of the International Business School in Munich. I began by asking him what makes the World Cup in Kitzbühel so special. “Thirteen years in the making, we have a great team working hard year by year to make this one of the top polo events in the world. We have over 15,000 spectators and eight international teams, with over 100 polo ponies attending. “Spectators can expect four days of world-class polo, accompanied by top social events.” As in St. Moritz, the ponies arrive first, in plenty of time to acclimatise to the conditions and train on the snow, before the players appear in the town, ready to be presented to the fans and the press in front of the Hotel Zur Tenne on day one of the event – the 14th of January this time around. In amongst the competition, the social highlight of the weekend is the VIP party, or Polo Player’s Night as it’s also known, on the Saturday evening. Tito told me about the camaraderie that exists between the players:

“There are of course rivalries in every sport [but] unlike most team sports, polo players play with different teams throughout the season. There is a lot less adjustment time.” Perhaps one of the reasons for the closeness of the protagonists is the fact polo is one of the most dangerous team sports in the world. Now in his thirties, Tito had already broken most of the bones in his body, including four ribs, his nose (twice), two fingers, toes and a vertebrae, all before his 21st birthday. Regardless - or perhaps because of this danger - polo is regarded as one of the sexiest sports on the planet. Although becoming more and more accessible to the masses and across the globe, the upper echelons of the rich and famous will come out for snow polo events this winter season, with six strong men on horseback entertaining glamorous crowds. One look at the team sponsors for World Cup St. Moritz tells you all you need to know about their target audience – Cartier, Maserati and Badrutt’s Palace Hotel. Indeed, as this relatively recent dimension of the sport continues to grow in popularity, it is worth remembering the famous verse that is inscribed on a plaque close to a polo field in Pakistan, and reflects the standing of the sport – ‘Let others play at other things. The king of games is still the game of kings.’ The Snow Polo World Cup St. Moritz runs from January 29th to 31st 2016 – more information can be found at www.snowpolo-stmoritz.com The 14th Valartis Bank Snow Polo World Cup runs from January 14th to 17th 2016 – for more information visit http://www.kitzbuehel.com/ en/events-lifestyle/events

he old ones are the best, and after 220 million years, these pink granite, fossil-rich peaks will undoubtedly have a tale or two to tell: it could be about Roger Moore as James Bond being chased down a hair-raising bobsleigh run by mean looking assassins; or perhaps Ernest Hemingway chewing his pen over his short stories, or even me coming unstuck on the evening of the Floralpine toboggan run. More likely the tales would be about the pleasure seekers having the time of

their lives in this high-altitude, South Tyrol world of extreme sports and leisure. Being up here in this craggy world is an exhilarating way to spend some well-deserved time off. It comes as no surprise that these jagged, 18 peak giants, with their vertical walls, sheer cliffs and long, deep valleys have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2009. However, I was not prepared for the intrinsic beauty of the pinnacles, spires and ledges, towering over the softer foothills below.

54 I had seen the pictures and heard the stories, now it was my turn. Well served by roads winding around the Dolomites’ fabulous flanks, we left Verona airport and hair-pinned our way up to the slopes. Salopettes, furry hat and sunglasses packed, we finally reached the underground entrance of the Adler Mountain Lodge. Up in the reception, and at the risk of sounding a bit soft, it felt like coming home; a lightening of a load or the taking of a relieved breath. It must be the serene, welcoming energy: the dazzling, sun-filled lounge and restaurant, and the sense of well-being. The Lodge is an enormous, sturdy structure built from spruce, pine and larch, and furnished in a modern and comfortable way, with some African twists which make it innovative, artistic and thoughtful. The flooring is acres of wood covered with hides, rugs and deep, embracing chairs. Upstairs, the wood-panelled

corridors and wide staircases have atmospheric low lighting, and everywhere is fragrant. The Adler is very much a lodge rather than a hotel, with eighteen Alpine suites and twelve lodges. The mysterious wooden figures of eagles and dragons on the beams have been added by artist Markus Delago. The architects responsible for this gorgeous building are Hugo and Hanspeter Demetz, assisted by Rudi Perathoner. Mid-afternoon, and there is a South Tyrolean buffet and drinks laid out to enjoy either indoors looking out at the electrifying view, or outdoors being part of it. I’m not used to being stunned into silence but there is little urge to try to speak when the coolest of air, the whitest of snow, the brightest of sun and the complete quiet, except the occasional whoosh of skis, takes away your words. It’s not always about winter; there are exceptional summer activities to be

57 experienced too. This was, however, winter time and helped by an extra downfall of fresh snow, the season was very much at its peak. There is a guaranteed 90% coverage of slopes and 300 days of sunshine. At the Adler Mountain Lodge skiing is outside the door, or you can walk round the corner and jump on ski lifts and cable cars to go further-a-field. We were there on the day of the eclipse and the keen skiers in our group took up the offer of hitting the slopes, and lunched at the famous Gostner Schwaige, sampling the local specialities during this quirky phenomenon. The rest of us wrapped up under warm blankets, put on sun cream, had a truly delicious lunch out on the sun terrace, and read books. If you are more intrepid than reading a book under a blanket (two of us had yet to grow snow legs), you might try the outstanding skiing, snow-shoeing, tobogganing, sledging, winter walking, riding in a horse-drawn carriage or other delights. All the information, ski passes and maps are waiting for you at the Adler Mounain Lodge. Alpe di Suisi is par excellence in all these matters and is pleased to help you plan your activities and transport, if needed. Dolomiti Superski is the king of the surrounding area, including 12 resorts, 450 lifts and 1,220 kilometres of slopes. With a Dolomiti Super Ski Pass, winter lovers can use the whole resort. Whatever you decide to try, everyday life becomes just a memory. Extreme sports aside, there is a lot to be said for leaning back and witnessing the superb scenery, while hearing stories of witches and folklore, and sipping gl端whein served from a cauldron. At the Lodge, which is all inclusive, exceptional regional food is paramount: cooked and served with serious aplomb. Even the charcuterie meats and cheeses, with super-sized crostini washed down with crisp Prosecco, are mouth-watering.The separate a la carte dinners are truly exceptional. The chefs here, of whom Hannes Pignater is the master, go to every length to perfect their craft, and say the training is just the beginning. The business of wine is serious also, and the Lodge has many excellent labels for you to try. Apart from the dining, leisure is spot on too.The Lodge has steam rooms and saunas, including one with dry hay bales in it which smell fantastic. There is a solarium with an indoor pool, leading to the outdoor infinity pool. We swam in the dark, saline, steaming waters, just dangling and drifting, surrounded by snow, sun and cool breezes on our faces, taking in the unbelievable view. As well as all this, there is a gymnasium, and many pampering treatments and massages to be had. Please do check these out for real feel-good rituals. It is lovely to lie back and be spoiled. The whole atmosphere is one of complete relaxation, with scrumptious, sustaining food and drinks on tap.The bedrooms are neutral and modern, with supremely comfortable beds. There are chairs and daybeds to chill out on, while the gorgeous bathroom houses a built-in bed with a grill/heater over the top to thaw out your snowy bones after a hard day on the hills. A well-sealed door opens directly onto the wooden balcony, where you can sit outside, dreaming and gazing at the golden-pink peaks in front of you. This is the life: invigorating yet also calming. The thing about writing an article after seeing and doing something you haven’t done before, is it brings something that has gone away back into sharp focus, and is a reminder of an exhilarating experience.

As for the Dolomites, trying to describe one of the world’s most famous mountain ranges has left me searching for more adjectives. The Swiss architect, Le Corbusier, called them “les plus belle architectures du monde” and having leaned back on my sheep-skin covered chair, warmed by the fire-pit in the table, sipping ice-cold Italian wine looking up at those lofty, secretive ranges, I think that will do. ocated underground in London’s Kingly Court, on the former site of Tatty Bogle – an out-of-hours drinking club – Cahoots is accessed via old-fashioned wooden escalators leading down to the dramatic, tiled platform bar, set alongside vintage train carriers. Punters are met with 1940s Tube carriage seats and mismatched furniture, surrounded by bunting draped throughout – the perfect backdrop for a jolly good knees-up! But more than that, Cahoots offers a truly immersive and authentic experience. Each member of staff is given their own character, ranging from milkmen and Hollywood starlets, through to good time gals and ticket inspectors. These personalities play a major role in the overall experience,

wearing bespoke uniforms made from original 1940s patterns and designs. By not breaking from character, the team at Cahoots make guests feel they have been transported back to post-war Britain. Soho’s illicit and nocturnal escapades are truly brought back to life. At Cahoots, V doesn’t just stand for ‘victory’, but also Vera Lynn, a gin-based cocktail served up in a glass resembling the face of The Forces’ Sweetheart. As rationing continued well into the 50s, the extensive drinks menu is inspired by ingredients available in 1946. Items that would have typically been found in people’s pantry cupboards, such as Oxo cubes, beetroot, garden peas, golden syrup and black treacle syrup, have been cleverly incorporated by the bar staff to create unique tipples.

FOOD & DRINK

70 During the Second World War, the site was used as an air raid shelter and Londoners would often transform the space into a home away from home, with their own nick-nacks and furnishings. In true British style, there was often a bar so civvies could drink, dance and entertain themselves during the dark nights of the Blitz. In 1946, a mischievous group of opportunists endeavoured to keep the Blitz spirit alive. They hosted nightly parties in abandoned Tube stations; these would soon become known as cahoots to people in the know. Today, Cahoots is more than just a themed bar, it’s truly a one-of-a-kind concept, which flies the flag for the British stiff upper lip, and relives the strive for normality, despite the hardships of the time. When visiting Cahoots, 40s glamour is very much encouraged, and as their website states, ‘It don’t mean a thing if you ain’t got that swing!’ And I think they might be right. Playing host to several events, such as Underground Supper Clubs, as well as live entertainment and sing-a-longs, Cahoots is the perfect joint to let your hair down and show off your Jitterbug or Charleston. The soundtrack to see you through until the early hours will include a mixture of jazz, swing, lindyhop, and the more contemporary electro-swing later in the night. Those wiley enough to find themselves at Cahoots are in for a lot more than just a treat, old bean. Guests will discover the triumph of post-war resourcefulness, and the reaction from most when visiting for the first time? Wow. To find out more visit: www.cahoots-london.com

A pioneering platform in estate agency marketing is now rolling out an update to its client base. Since their advent almost five years ago, the bespoke property TV channel, developed and implemented by the in-house creative teams at The Cream Club’s Cambridgeshire-based headquarters, has become a distinctive medium for leading independent agencies to distinguish themselves from their local competition. The concept behind web TV channels arose from finding new and engaging tools to offer premium estate agencies an exclusive opportunity to increase their market share in their coverage area. Spurred by growth in national online activity, faster broadband speeds and the audience for video-on-demand; and with statistics demonstrating video marketing to be up to 48 percent more effective in generating business than more conventional approaches (Source: IAB UK); professionally-produced walkthrough videos have been the catalyst for this leap forward in online estate agency marketing. The stream of videos, not only showcasing an agent’s collection of properties, but also providing details about corporate services and the geographical area they serve, retain a prime position in the evolution of Cream’s online property TV platform.

Reflecting the shift in online activity from searching to sharing content, the updated online TV platform offers greater integration with social media platforms. Every property which features on the restyled websites is provided with its own microsite. The link can be instantly shared via the leading social networks, and it is anticipated the option of creating a web postcard for every property will quickly follow. At Coopers, we shall be embracing this advance in online property marketing in the months to come. Through coopers-tv.co.uk, we already know and understand the positive impact a property TV website has, and we are looking forward to see how our new-look site will sustain our award-winning and high-standard customer service. The demand for online TV websites appears to be insatiable among the industry, as their effectiveness in increasing instructions, and consequentially, market share, becomes clear among the agencies who have them, and those who want them. In the five years since the initial property TV websites were launched, Cream’s client base has expanded by more than tenfold, to cover a network of companies across England, Scotland and Wales. It seems apparent the progression of the property TV phenomenon keeps moving forward.

Sculpting stories Creating ceramic installations and pieces inspired by her emotions, Katharine Morling’s artwork is truly unique. Chloe Kennedy talks to Katharine about her artistic journey, her travels and her passions

A

fter achieving a BA degree in Ceramics and an MA in Ceramics and Glass, award winning artist, Katharine Morling runs her own art business in Deptford, London, where she works closely with porcelain and ceramics to create pieces that tell a story, using her signature style of monochromatic aesthetic. Katharine’s work has been exhibited in Paris, America and the Netherlands, and her travelling has inspired her creative projects which have led to many awards and commissions from the likes of the Balman Gallery in Northumberland and Harrods in London. Has art always appealed to you? When did you realise you wanted to pursue a career in sculptures and ceramics? From a young age I always wanted to be an artist and had an interest in going to art galleries and looking at art. Even though it took me a while to get here, I think it was always in the back of my head. Can you tell me more about your signature monochromatic aesthetic style? I developed this style when I attended the Royal College of Art. I was doing

a lot of drawing to try and convey my thoughts and feelings, while looking at different ways of blending these with my ceramic work. I had a project where I made a pair of scissors in porcelain and added the black outline. Suddenly, my drawings were real, and I could walk around them. This developed into other objects and I was off! You have worked around the world. From your travels, what has inspired you? When I travelled, I fell in love with India; it was my favourite place. I loved the people, and found the architecture so inspiring and different. Can you name an artist who you admire - how has this person inspired you? I love the work of Sergei Isupov. I was first inspired and consoled by art. I found his work instilled in me, the very emotions I had when I first discovered the surrealist movement, and have found no other artist working in ceramics to have done this so far.

What route of study did you take? My path has been quite varied as my style changed after I went to the Royal College of Art, so I have two very distinct bodies of work, both of which I am very proud of. After my BA in Falmouth, a gallery bought the pieces from my degree show, so it seemed like the logical progression to keep making. What is your favourite piece you have created so far, and why? Poison Pen was a direct reaction to my feelings about being dyslexic. I find words move around my feelings, creating a slight panic with anything to do with words. This piece is technically quite challenging, being one of the largest pieces I have made from porcelain. It has an inner structure, as porcelain will sag at high temperatures. Another challenging aspect was controlling the movement of the keys, so they have the illusion of appearing to wobble but without them falling over. I was particularly pleased with how the keys came out: the heat of the kiln had moved the keys just enough to create a sensation of how I feel as a dyslexic with words. To me, it summed up my feelings, and I didn’t feel the need to tell people what the piece means to me. Now, the work has a new life of what it means to other people. Do you have any upcoming projects? I have an exhibition at the Shipley Art Gallery, which showcases two of my large scale installations: Stilted Life, and my recently completed commission, Gardens Edge, made up of five life-size figures in a woodland setting. In regards to your teaching, how long have you held workshops? Do you enjoy aiding growing artists, and what do they take away from the workshops? I started offering workshops in my studio in 2011, but I have been teaching on and off for many years, working with adults and children. I love working

with others, and at a workshop I find it really satisfying to help people realise their ideas, whether it be through showing a new technique or advising on the structure of a piece. Last year, I went to America to run a workshop at Mudfire in Atlanta, which was great fun. What challenges do you face when you work? Time. I find that I don’t have enough time to make all the things which are in my head. I start all of my new projects with quick, five minute sketches, and just try to be very loose and get down on paper the ideas, conscious and unconscious. Tell me more about your passion for astronomy. What struck your interest? I find astronomy fascinating. It really gives me a perspective on life and the scale of the universe. Living in South London, I am very close to the Greenwich Observatory, which is the perfect place to learn! What advice would you give to an artist looking to improve their skills and share their work? Do lots of work and keep pushing yourself. Be yourself, because you are the only one who can. The Katharine Morley – Porcelain Edge exhibition runs from 19th September 2015 – 9th January 2016 at the Shipley Art Gallery. Please visit www.katharinemorling.co.uk for more information.

Savile Row and its neighbouring streets are home to some of the world’s most skilled tailors. Catherine Law talks to Angus Cundey and Anda Rowland to find out why The Row’s reputation is so deserved

FASHION

79

A

t the mere mention of Savile Row, we think of expert cuts, elegant lines, a luxurious finish – and a product more classic than any of its counterparts around the world. Internationally known as the hub of traditional tailoring, Savile Row forms a collection of individual firms arranged in Mayfair, with a historic clientele including celebrities, politicians and royalty. The founder of Savile Row was Henry Poole, who took an address here in 1846. However, the tailoring roots of this prestigious street can be traced back almost five hundred years, and with its generations of the most skilled and highly demanded couturier, it’s easy to see how Savile Row has earnt its distinguished reputation for bespoke tailoring. As well as being one of the co-founders of the Savile Row Bespoke Association, Angus Cundey also holds the title of Managing Director of Henry Poole & Co, and is the sixth generation of his family to manage the company. It is clear from his detailed answers to my questions on all things tailoring that he is hugely accomplished in his craft. He originally learnt to sew in Paris in 1955, before attending the Tailor and Cutter Academy in 1958, where he was taught the specifics of cutting and suit – or as it is referred to in the industry – coat-making. Joining Henry Poole & Co in 1959, Angus worked his way up the ranks before taking his current role on his father’s retirement. Angus tells me that a Savile Row suit remains the same as a century ago – handmade buttonholes and collar, and canvas padding, with just one coat or trouser-maker constructing each garment, meaning they can proudly state he or she made it all. Evidently, the company’s personal service is just as traditional and luxurious as their suits, as Angus walks me through the process of having a bespoke item made to measure: “Upon entering Henry Poole & Co, you will be met by a senior salesman who will show you patterns of suiting, sport jacketing and formal wear woven by the finest weaving companies in the world from Yorkshire and Somerset. “You will then have a full set of measurements taken by a master cutter and details will be recorded of style, pockets and any other special requirements. Subsequently, within a few weeks there will be two or three fittings before the garment is finally finished.”

FASHION AND BEAUTY

80 It is clear that to be a tailor on Savile Row requires an understanding of the history, exceptional customer service and a passion for the craft, but above all, to remain true to the authenticity of the street. To ensure the traditions remain, Angus formed, together with Mark Henderson of Gieves and Hawkes, the Savile Row Bespoke Association to represent the individual tailoring firms of Savile Row, also meeting with the Westminster City Council to discuss trade. Angus comments: “A great success [of the association] has been to introduce young apprentices to our workshops [with] so far over 55 having qualified in handmade coat, waistcoat and trouser-making.” Henry Poole & Co isn’t the only firm to stay faithful to the beginnings of Savile Row. I spoke to the owner of Anderson & Sheppard, Anda Rowland, who told me: “There are very few differences in the process and in the tailoring at Anderson & Sheppard.” She continues,“What is most important is what has not changed, and that is our commitment to quality and customer care.” Anda stands by her approach of maintaining the high standards of the Savile Row

forefathers before her, and claims the only differences adopted by Anderson & Sheppard now, compared to its establishment in 1906, “are in the style” and not the method. “Savile Row has the largest concentration of the highest quality bespoke tailors in the world,” Anda proudly states, and all maintain the core values the title brings. However, each firm is its own individual business, with their own unique style. “Anderson & Sheppard,” Anda proclaims, “are experts in the ‘English Drape’ cut: softly elegant to show the wearer’s style rather than impose a style upon him.” Referring to the comfort achieved through the high armholes and the hand-cut shoulder pads made of wadding, Anda notes the style is ‘a real advantage with the younger customer, who demands comfort’. It is this reference to the younger purchaser that brings me to question: how does Savile Row appeal to the 21st century man whilst maintaining its historical standing and authenticity? Anda states: “There has been a return to the product and to traditional values in recent years: customers are more informed and are more demanding.

FASHION AND BEAUTY

81 Many are still willing to spend, but will want to know more about the product – how it was made, where it was made and who made it – they look beyond the label and want an authentic experience. This has been good for Savile Row as these values and abilities are at the core of what we do and who we are.” What seems to be apparent is that there is no demand for change. The very reason the customer visits Savile Row today is to receive a level of superiority and skill in tailoring, a subtle extravagance, a classic garment.Yes, there are tailors on the street who offer a more contemporary style, a unique twist on the traditions, but they still retain all that this street is famous for. It is this sense of tradition and wisdom that makes Savile Row so special. For more information please visit: www.henrypoole.com www.anderson-sheppard.co.uk

We drive the

McLaren 650S supercar When the Gordon-Murray designed McLaren F1 road car came out in 1992, I, like every other young guy lived for the prospect of driving one. It was the most sensational supercar the world had seen at the time; the stuff of dreams, so much so that when Rowan Atkinson smashed his, I decided never to watch him on the telly again Words by Kevin Haggarthy

MOTORING

85 The McLaren Way o you can imagine how emotional I felt on my way to McLaren HQ to pick up the very latest state-of-the-art equivalent, the new 650S Convertible. Awesome: and not only because it was a McLaren supercar, but no less because a visit to their base is a special occasion in itself. I was greeted at reception by a smartly presented McLaren official and a warm, professional smile: “Welcome to McLaren, Mr Haggarthy. I will be your personal factory tour guide today, and later, we shall be met by my colleague who will introduce you to your car.” My car! All very proficient and smooth; yet equally impressive was the immaculate cleanliness of the building. Not a thing out of place, no untidy pieces of paper strewn across desks; all personnel were dressed in business smart casual clothes rather than overkill, and young keen engineers clad in nice black T-shirts and trousers. The reception itself is a historical museum of McLaren cars, from Bruce McLaren’s very first race car bought for him by his Dad, to the McLaren GTR 1, insured at £40 million. To the left, in their own room, were Jenson Button’s and Fernando Alonso’s current Formula 1 cars, parked up for the season’s summer recess. Other than the two meticulously prepared cars perched on stands, there was nothing else in the room to complement the squeaky clean white surfaces; and I mean nothing. There is so much pride at McLaren, and whilst the current season is a bit of a downer for them, trophy upon trophy line both sides of the far corridor of the building, being a stolid reminder of just how much the company has achieved over its 52 years in racing. If you work here, you are required to enter the cafeteria from one door, and leave by another, so when you walk down the corridor on leaving, you have no choice but to observe the masses of trophies either side. This tour is all it takes to see why this company has been so successful, so much so, that at one time Ron had so much sponsorship coming in he had to ring around asking if suitable teams were interested in taking up the offers.

S

The 650S Of course, the highlight at the end of the tour was this beautiful McLaren 650S, parked outside reception, ready to be driven. Not far short of a quarter of a million pounds to buy, 650 bhp of power will get you to the supermarket in a hurry. We’d driven the original MC12 about three years ago, and that was impressive, but it just didn’t have the looks of the 650S; its superlative and seductive lines heightened by the ‘I’ve arrived’ gull-wing doors. What didn’t surprise me was just how easy this car is to drive. Talk about a user-friendly supercar! It is so simple to drive, yet so complex and capable. When you buy this car, you are buying a genuinely usable supercar, more fitted to everyday life than any we have previously experienced. Have no reservations about drop-top lack of stiffness either; the toughness of its carbon tub means the convertible loses nothing in stiffness to the Coupé, and thus they perform identically. At the press of a button, the top is down within 17 seconds, and you can enjoy the glory of 650 bhp of twin turbo charged V8 speaking to you with power. It’s delivered via a 7 speed semi-automatic double clutch gearbox, and with courage in hand, will rocket you to 62 mph in 3 seconds and has a top speed of 204 mph. But the McLaren has a more subtle message for the enthusiast who loves driving as much as speed. Simple sophistication is the word, for with the 650S are two separate controls for suspension/ride adjustments and power. In short, it gives you the flexibility to drive the car in an uprated drive mode, yet with a softer suspension setting to counter real road conditions of bump and camber – should you choose. The fast B-road challenge is where this car comes into its own. It has literally seering acceleration, forcing your head firmly into the head-rest when the devil takes you, combined with excellent grip and balance, resulting from both McLaren chassis tuning know-how, and the obvious common sense balance of a mid-mounted engine. I swear you will forget the £200k+ plus price tag after you’ve driven it.

Dream

Words by Kevin Haggarthy

The BMW M6 is one of the most luxurious convertibles on the planet. Despite its girth, it also happens to be one of the quickest and best handling; that’s why we love it. It’s ‘have your cake and eat it’ time! Let’s drive...

W

ith the BMW M6, we’ve never quite understood why. It is very powerful, very fast, an amazing looker, and beautifully-finished inside

and out. Yet despite its warp power, this is not a ‘purist’ car; size and weight are the main reason. It is not easy to punt around such a big car through a challenging winding road with attitude. This one weighs just over two tons, and due to its size and width, you can feel the weight big time, but then the M6 has prodigious grip and expert M chassis tuning, so the only thing you’ll need to complain about is your neck muscles fighting the G-force. The M6 Convertible looks expensive, because it is. £97,300 to be precise, but that’s the price for quality. Logic aside, it has certainly proved a winning recipe; so much so that BMW have made nothing more than a few external cosmetic changes and upgraded interior trim to make a grand car even grander. The M6 is powered by a twin turbo-charged V8 engine which catches breath on hard throttle to rocket you up to 62 mph in 4.3 seconds, and constrains its

top speed to 155 mph. There’s a seamless process on the way there, due to the super-smooth changes of the excellent 7 speed dual-clutch gearbox. Two performance upgrades are possible, one up to 567 bhp, and if you need to be rocketed to Mars the 592 bhp Competition Package will soothe your hunger for excitement. Whilst living with a not unreasonable 239 g/km of CO2, achieving an average 27.7 mpg is not bad for this level of performance. What you will certainly have is credibility and prestige. Credibility because BMW know how to make keen driver’s cars. Some have said the slight vagueness of the electronic steering detracts from that, but the car delivers, and to many, that’s what matters most. Prestige comes courtesy of the name but more so the M6’s grand and salubrious looks. You can imagine yourself on the Côte d’Azur even if your nearest beach is Skegness. At the Côte d’Azur you are part of the crowd; at Skegness you are the Don. Either way, you’ll smile each time you pick up the keys.

The sexiest

Rolls-Royce ever built

“Strive for perfection in everything you do. Take the best that exists and make it better. When it does not exist, design it. Accept nothing nearly right or good enough,” so says Sir Henry Royce – a perfectionist to the tee.

C

urrent examples of Sir Henry Royce’s product founding philosophy are reflected in the strongest Rolls-Royce model line-up in the history of the brand. The present model line-up, the Phantom II, the Ghost, and the Wraith, meet Mr Royce’s convictions. What was missing, however, in the words of its maker, was a truly modern, super-luxury, four seater convertible. The new Rolls-Royce Dawn thus completes the company’s homage to its maker – “When it does not exist, design it.” This famous and rare Rolls-Royce name was originally drawn from the Silver Dawn, and only previously applied to 28 very special drop-head bodies between 1950 and 1954. This most contemporary interpretation is set to attract a new and younger buyer profile to the brand. Like the Wraith, it has a 6.6 litre V12 engine, and its gears are controlled by satellite navigation. It’ll power you across continents with a staggering 563 bhp at your beck and call, and 780 Nm of torque makes overtaking a seamless pass-time. A new feature is accelerator pedal mapping that delivers

up to 30% increased response at medium throttle. As such, the Dawn is Rolls-Royce’s most powerful four seat drop-head motor car to date, yet lighter and more fuel-efficient than ever.

luxury The lap of

Maserati has joined forces with top Italian menswear designers Zegna. We meet them in Italy for an amazing lifestyle journey Words by Kevin Haggarthy

W

hen you buy a Maserati you are making a statement: an appreciation of a brand with Italian history; a cocktail of the desirable, exotic and rare; proof of a passion for driving. You may also have an impressive wardrobe, and amongst your collection of suits, there may well be a Zegna, a marque of leading Italian luxury. Zegna is to men’s designer clothing what Maserati is to cars, so it’s no surprise the two have formed a partnership. As a result, your new Maserati can now be fitted with a Zegna silk-lined interior and seating. Top table The Grand Hotel des Iles Borromées in Stresa, combining sumptuous

elegance and tradition with the allure of Italian luxury, proves an ideal location to meet the Chief Executives of Maserati, Harald Wester, and Zegna, Paolo Zegna, to learn about how the meeting of minds led to the joining of brands. The beautiful town, located on the shores of Lake Maggiore, is renowned for its antiquity and timeless beauty. In the hotel courtyard sits a grand selection of Maserati saloons; the Quattroporte - its flagship model, and their new E-Segment best seller, the Ghibli. It’s been an arduous labour of love for Zegna to achieve the impeccable silk fitting finish to the cars evident in the Ghibli diesel we choose for our first drive. Despite being Maserati’s first ever ‘diesel’ engined car, on the road, it drives and sounds so ‘Maserati’. This is the acid test of credibility,

MOTORING

89

but thankfully, Maserati has certainly succeeded here. With its taut handling and torque aplenty, the Ghibli diesel feels agile and responsive, and for long distance cruising it is smooth and refined; a great GT – with a touch of class. No less impressive is the destination of our journey, a visit to the Zegna headquarters, where Ermenegildo Zegna founded his family business. Casa Zegna is a historical archive and cultural centre in Trivero, within the province of Biella. Inside the Zegna Wool Mill - a 1930s building once the family’s home - a new museum concept has been developed. It is also the place where the uniquely smooth silk used for the Maserati Sedan’s elegant interiors is created. We soon understood why these two pillars of Italian manufacturing history

have combined; whetting our appetite with even more curiosity about our mode of transport in getting there. Maserati’s solution to that was Balocco, the official Fiat Chrysler Automobiles’ Proving Ground: 80 kilometres of tracks, circuits and bends for every driving condition. For this journey, we opted for the petrol-engined Ghibli S; the turbo V6 engine making this the sweetest of the Ghiblis. On track we experienced the GranTurismo MC Stradale Centennial Edition driven by professional drivers; the handling, speed, and sheer tenacity of this model proving remarkable in the wet and rainy conditions greeting us at the time. I want one.

90 Where the heart is The final stop of the programme is Grugliasco, close to Turin, to visit the new high-tech Avvocato Giovanni Agnelli Plant (AGAP). It was acquired by Fiat Group Automobiles - now FCA - from Carrozzeria Bertone in 2009, and between 2011 and 2012, the facility was completely restructured with the installation of new production lines. After its inauguration in January 2015, production of the flagship Quattroporte Sedan began, while the Ghibli, the new top of the range saloon which marks Maserati’s entrance into the E segment, went into production just seven months later. It’s a remarkable facility, producing remarkable cars. We swapped our Ghibli for a Quattroporte for this journey; this time, the V8, a refined and powerful business express; you are equally at home being

chauffeur-driven as piloting the car behind the wheel. The car looks elegant with an air of understated sophistication only the Italians seem to be able to achieve. Its great cruising ability, matched with speed and a powerful exhaust note was pleasure in itself. If there was ever a way to be introduced to the true Maserati experience, it has to be this. As the owner of a Maserati, you make a great lifestyle choice, and with the Zegna touch, somehow, you know you’re there. Project Kahn is the original British automotive fashion house - designing and styling bespoke vehicles for a discerning clientele. We redefine the spirit and aesthetic of each vehicle, always placing sophistication before ostentation, and originality before convention. The Range Rover 600-LE (Luxury Edition) features a completely redesigned front and rear bumper assembly, modelled in the same lightweight carbon composite used on F1 cars, and precision engineered to fit seamlessly onto the vehicle. Our choice of simple, elegant alloy wheels completes the remodelled exterior. Inside, you’ll find a bespoke luxury interior upholstered by our expert team, to the most exacting standards of British craftsmanship. Choose from a wide range of leathers, fabrics, colours and stitching, including Harris Tweed - the options for personalising your vehicle are almost endless. Working with Project Kahn is the first step towards realising your dream vehicle, and the start of a collaborative process of design and discussion which we’ve found is often every bit as satisfying as its result. Finest quality, to the last detail. The Range Rover 600-LE is available from £89,875
