castle was constructed in the twelfth century by Richard de Luci, Henry II’s Chief Justice of England, who was bestowed land in Cornwall for his duty to the crown. Although there is no longer a castle in the city, settlements developed around the confluence of the rivers Kenwyn and Allen, establishing Truro as a working inland port. The area grew prosperous through two key local industries: fishing and stannary, with the town gaining self-governance, and the right to elect a mayor, via charter from Elizabeth I in 1589. The same charter also afforded Truro control over the port of Falmouth, which eventually gained autonomy in 1709. In the interim, Truro became the home of a Royalist mint, which endured until the English Civil War in 1646. Advances in mining techniques, linked with an increase in the value of tin, brought wealth to Truro in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Mine owners dwelled in elegant Georgian and Victorian townhouses that still stand today in Lemon Street, which takes its name from an old local MP, Sir William Lemon. These properties, together with those along Walsingham Place, are celebrated by the City Council as “the finest examples of Georgian architecture west of the city of Bath.” City status was inferred on Truro by Queen Victoria in 1877, a year after the town inherited a bishopric. The city’s Gothic-style cathedral commenced construction in 1880, and took a total of thirty years to complete. With a concurrent decline in the mining industry, Truro settled into a new role as the commercial and administrative centre of the county. Today, a surrounding network of protected natural areas across the city, and its outlying villages, remain untouched by the progress of modernity.

Among the city’s award-winning public green spaces are Victoria Gardens, along the Leats; Boscawen Park, which lies on the banks of the Truro River; and the Millpool, a tucked-away corner regarded as the city’s favourite secret spot. Venturing further out from the city, there is Calenick Creek, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty; the Daubuz Moors; the National Trustowned Trelissick Garden at Feock; and Tregothnan Estate beside the village of St Michael Penkivel, the historic seat of the Viscounts Falmouth. Complementing the city’s collection of independent traders and national retail chains, the indoor Pannier Market still retains a thriving variety of stalls. The cultural centrepoint of the city is undoubtedly the Lemon Quay, where events such as the Festival in April, the City Carnival and the HalfMarathon in September, the City of Lights Procession and the Continental Market at Christmas time, all pass through. Meanwhile, River Street is home to the Royal Cornwall Museum, which will mark its 300th anniversary in 2018. Among the displays within the Grade II Listed building are the Artognou stone, paintings from the Newlyn School of artists, and a collection of Cornish materials once owned by the Cornish squire, Philip Rashleigh of Menabilly. In addition to the cathedral, a cornucopia of churches is scattered throughout the city, including St John’s Church, built in a Classic-style and dating back to 1828. Also constructed in the 19th century is the city’s railway station; opened in 1859, with the site of Brunel’s wooden viaduct of the same year now home to a stone structure.

Similar facilities are provided at Castle Beach, which hugs the rocky embankments of Pendennis Point; Maenporth, located immediately closer to the town centre, and the starting point for delightful coastal walks; and Swanpool Beach, which adjoins a nature reserve, designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest, and offering habitat to species of all kinds, from birds to eels, to the rare Trembling Sea Mat. Beyond the vicinity of Falmouth, other beaches recognised for their cleanliness and safety include Gunwalloe Beach near Helston, Kennack Sands and Polurrian Cove, both on the Lizard, and the beautiful Poldhu Cove, best known as the location where the first Transatlantic radio signal was transmitted in 1901. Two further Blue Flag Beaches in this area are havens for surfers. One held in particularly high regard is Porthleven, considered one of the best breaks in the British Isles. A low-to-mid tide, a south-westerly swell and a north-easterly wind provide the ideal surfing conditions, yet the beach’s reputation often means seasoned surfers will have to combat the waves along with casual bodyboarders. Originally the mouth of the River Cober, Loe Bar is divided into two parts: the largest natural freshwater lake in the county (the Loe), and a halfmile shingle back, dividing the lake from the sea (the Bar). Dramatic in appearance, the combination of strong waves and treacherous currents create an environment strictly for the most experienced

surfer, with signs discouraging visitors to avoid swimming off the sands. County-wide, the North Coast is home to the country’s best-known surfing beaches. There is, of course, Fistral Beach at Newquay, where the swells can reach up to eight feet; the vast beach at Perranporth; and Porthtowan, a favourite among the surf community for its immense swell and fast waves. At a gentler pace, many beaches along the Cornish coast require dogs to be kept on leads; however, a few are designated without such restrictions all year round. This includes a cluster of six, enjoying sheltered positions along the shore of the River Helford. From the coast inland, they are Porthallack, Porth Sawsen, Grebe, Durgan, Polgwidden Cove and Helford Passage. Of these dog-friendly beaches, Polgwidden Cove has historical significance: its concrete structures were launch points for boats setting off to attack Omaha Beach in Normandy on D-Day. Although privately-owned, the beach is open to the public, and can be reached through Trebah Gardens. With their rich tapestry of textures, locations and climates; and whether you’re looking to follow the crowds to catch the waves, or finding a private space sheltered from the rest of the world, you are truly spoilt for choice by Cornwall’s beautiful network of beaches. Time was, when you were considering buying, selling, renting or letting a property, you could anticipate your estate agent of choice to place a notice in their window, or advertise in the classified section of a newspaper to reach the widest audience. Technological advances have expanded the possibilities property marketing affords. Thanks to the internet, the marketplace is now as wide as the world’s online reach, and houses and flats can now be virtually explored through audio, video and images. And one company is moving forward in the process of rolling out a pioneering approach to the way properties are bought, sold and discovered: the microsite. A first in the world of property marketing, the microsite technology has been developed in-house at the Cambridgeshire headquarters of the Cream Club, a progressive marketing company who specialise in the creation and implementation of online video solutions for a constantlyexpanding client base of independent estate agents around the UK. This innovative aspect of property marketing builds on the success of Cream’s established product line, incorporating online TV channels showcasing professionally-produced video walkthroughs of an agent’s portfolio of properties. These guides still form the heart of the new generation of websites, and are enhanced by an increased element of interactivity.

In addition to sharing the microsite link via Facebook and Twitter, a property seeker can compile a playlist of prospective new homes, search for relevant properties more dynamically, and arrange appointments to view the property. Guides to the local area, and the services the agent provides are also incorporated in each microsite. These form just a part of what has been tailored as a more engaging experience for microsite users; an experience which will continue to evolve, with plans in place to implement property postcards, personal photo galleries, 3D floor plans and interaction with high-end brands already in the pipeline. In essence, the lifespan of the microsite will go beyond the transaction. It is anticipated between 200 and 300 agents nationwide will introduce microsite technology over the coming months, with Lewis Haughton Wills among this exclusive group of market-leading and award-winning agents. As one of the prominent exponents of property TV channels, we are looking forward with great anticipation to embracing this new development in online property marketing as part of our high-standard customer service.

The

Alice Look As 2015 marks 150 years since the first publication of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Antony Sore looks at the Victoria and Albert Museum’s tribute to one of English literature’s most influential style icons, and discovers the effect she’s had on fashion throughout the world

A

lice’s Adventures in Wonderland: one of the most loved and influential tales of British literature ever written. Reproduced in many forms since its publication, including on stage and screen, the novel’s title character has inspired fashion and styles across the world. Now, 150 years after Alice first fell down the rabbit hole, she is being celebrated in a new exhibition,The Alice Look at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. But who is Alice? Ah, that’s the great puzzle. It was the 4 July 1862 when Charles Lutwidge Dodgson and the Reverend Robinson Duckworth went on a rowing trip along the Isis, a portion of the River Thames which flows through Oxford. Joining him on the boat were the three children of his friend Henry Liddell, the Dean of Christ Church College: Lorina, Alice, and Edith. More commonly known by his pen name Lewis Carroll, Dodgson entertained the children with an improvised story about a bored girl looking for an adventure. A story that so amused young Alice Liddell, around whom the tale was based, that she made him write it down for her. And so, three years later, and after much persuasion by Dodgson’s friend, the Scottish author George Macdonald, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland was published, and a style icon was born. Ask most people today to describe Alice’s clothing, and they will most likely tell you of the blue dress, the white pinafore, and the hairband which is named after her; a look popularised by the 1951 Disney film, synonymous with our heroine. But if, as in the text, Alice was unsure she was even the same person as when she woke up in the morning, then she would be yet more confused to see the various ways she’s been portrayed throughout the years. Yellow was the fashion choice when Alice explored Wonderland in the first colour edition of the book, while later editions saw her wear pink, red, and other pastel shades. It’s not only the colour scheme which has changed; in the original

1864 manuscript, which Dodgson presented to Alice Liddell as a Christmas present, his own initial illustrations saw Alice with dark hair, and not the blonde locks she is now famous for. They came in 1865 when the first books were published by Macmillan and Co.Then, the story was illustrated by the political cartoonist John Tenniel, who, under precise instructions from the author, drew Alice as a smartly-dressed Victorian child, based loosely around another of Carroll’s young friends, Mary Hilton Badcock. It was Tenniel who first added the pinafore, one of the most iconic garments in Alice’s wardrobe; although Dodgson wasn’t entirely enamoured with his work, stating in a letter to another illustrator, Gertrude Thomson that: “He [Tenniel] drew several pictures of Alice entirely out of proportion - head decidedly too large and feet decidedly too small.” These early editions can be seen in the Beginnings part of the V&A exhibition, coupled with other children’s garments from the Victorian period, which bring Tenniel’s illustrations to life.

A senior lecturer in the field of children’s literature and culture at Queen Mary, University of London, Kiera Vaclivik is curator of The Alice Look and described Alice as an ‘enormously enigmatic character’ and a ‘role model’; someone who is ‘resilient without being ruthless, dynamic and alert’, a character ‘unduly concerned by her appearance, [but who] always looks good’. This combination is something that many women and girls aspire to today, and is represented in the Inspiration section of the exhibition, which is housed in the V&A’s Museum of Childhood. Here, magazines, photographs, posters and fabrics show how Alice has impacted contemporary fashion, pairing Annie Liebovitz’s American Vogue shoot featuring Natalia Vodianova with images of Lizzy Jagger in GQ magazine. Clips of pop videos and catwalk shows featuring modern stars such as Gwen Stefani and Avril Lavigne play on a loop, highlighting the influence Alice has had on modern popular culture. As Kiera Vaclavik told me: “A bit like Collodi’s

Pinnochio, Alice has been cut free of her moorings, and in many ways lives a life independent of her creator and the original text. Alice can now be represented with all kinds of different emphases in all manner of different contexts. The exhibition offers the opportunity to see this wholly familiar figure in a totally new light, to see how she has been appropriated and adopted by cultures across the world.” This international impact is showcased in Global Alice, where text and costume will be combined to represent how her appearance alters according to her location. A complete Lolita-style outfit is displayed alongside a Provençal Alice, wearing tropézienne sandals and a sundress. Swahili Alice dispenses with crinoline and opts for a local kanga. Specialist and collector Mark Richards has loaned many items from his own collection for the exposition, and they sit alongside books, artworks, and fabrics from companies such as Liberty of London,Vintage, and Vans - who donated a pair of trainers inspired by the story.

FASHION AND BEAUTY

30

FASHION AND BEAUTY

The show’s centrepiece, a specially commissioned work by Josie Smith, pattern-cutter for Roksands, is a 3D version of Alice’s Wonderland outfit made using fabric printed with text and pictures from the book. The final section, Follower of Fashion shows how illustrators have kept Alice relevant in 20th century editions of Wonderland, and at this point, I found it interesting to look at how different commentators have attempted to explain the story in the corresponding period. As cultures have changed throughout the centuries, many questions have been asked of Dodgson. Was Lewis Carroll on drugs when he wrote the story, a psychedelia obsessed 1960’s audience asked. Or more recently, was there something sinister in his close relationship with Alice Liddell? Vaclacik is keen to play down these myths: “It’s fascinating to trace what different generations have found in the text, but they say more about those subsequent generations than about Carroll himself. It’s important to remain open-minded and alert to different approaches, but much of what is said about Carroll and Alice, and drugs, and any number of other things totally lacks foundation. Fame attracts a whirlwind of rumour and allegation and it’s important to sort fact from fantasy.” Which brings us nicely back to the fantasy story which has entertained us for generations, and continues to do so in its 150th year. As Vaclacik says: “The future is Alice. There will be another Disney film released next year, which will ensure she remains at the forefront of popular culture. Ever since the books were first produced, stage and screen adaptations have generated widespread interest in the originals, as well as a whole host of tie-in merchandise, and this new version will be no exception.” With this year’s anniversary inspiring a host of new works: Damon Albarn has co-written a musical inspired by the classic story, and the London Symphony Orchestra’s Discovery Family Concert in November is built around the tale – Alice’s appeal looks sure to go on past 2015. A touch of glass Words by Gemma Rose

Roaring for 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, at a temperature of 1100°C, the furnace stands at the heart of the Rothschild & Bickers glassblowing studio, and is fuelled by a mixture of natural gas and air

ocated in Hertford, Rothschild & Bickers, founded in 2007 by Victoria Rothschild and Mark Bickers, is home to only a handful of glassblowers still active in the UK; and is the only studio to primarily produce hand-blown lighting. The art of glassblowing is believed to originate back to the establishment of the Roman Empire in the 1st century BC, and the tools used today at Rothschild & Bickers, although maybe not as old as the trade, have remained the same for hundreds of years; the quality of the product relies completely on the skills of the craftsman. Victoria Rothschild, founder and glassblower,

explains how she got into this long-established profession: “I first became involved in glass when I studied at the National College of Art and Design in Dublin. I was fascinated with the material, and went on to train at the International Glass Centre in the West Midlands, and then finally, at the Royal College of Art in London. “Craft has always been a passion of mine since childhood, and learning the processes of design only energised my interest.” Despite the decline in conventional glassblowing and the rise in more modern practises, Rothschild & Bickers remain faithful to historic methods, and

work extremely hard to keep the craft alive.Victoria continues, “We use very traditional techniques, and make shapes by hand using calipers to measure. “Each piece is unique and it can take up to seven years to learn the form and process involved. We don’t blow into moulds to create the form, which allows us to be flexible with what we make, and create new products very quickly.” Inspired by architectural detail and traditional decoration, Rothschild & Bickers’ lighting ‘embodies the rich qualities of classical interiors’, and are the result of a very collaborative process between Victoria and Mark. The original Tassel lights and

Vintage lights referenced Victorian London architecture and interiors, and this generally has carried on, regardless of inevitable influences from the current project or the target country. As well as the full signature range, Rothschild & Bickers offer a bespoke service, and many of their pieces have featured in popular publications such as Elle Decoration, Living Etc and House and Garden. Their eye-catching works have appeared in many UK Monsoon stores, however, Rothschild & Bickers have also experienced success on a more global scale, with High Street favourite Ted Baker using Rothschild & Bickers designs to add something rather special to their Hong Kong, Azerbaijan, Melrose, Las Vegas and Kuwait stores. And what is Victoria’s piece of choice? “My favourite is probably the Pick-n-Mix collection, as I like the simplicity of the design.” In 2014, Rothschild & Bickers won the Made in the UK category at the Elle Decoration Awards. When asked what the key to their success was,Victoria says: “I think we have always tried to keep our manufacturing in the UK and work with clients who appreciate this. Our clients are mostly specifiers and architects for bars, restaurants and retail.” She continues: “It is not easy to make glass in the UK, and we need the support of independent designers and specifiers to keep the craft alive. We currently have three apprentices working at Rothschild & Bickers, and hopefully this will grow as the business expands.” Accompanying Victoria, Mark and the team is Harvey the dog, who enjoys lounging around and occasionally barking at people… I wonder if the Roman glassblowing studios had a canine critic? ways to make your home summer ready With summer just around the corner, there has never been a better time to prepare for the warmer days to come. Here are our top tips for ensuring your home is suitably transformed into the ultimate summer haven

1

8

2

9

Sitting pretty Dust off your patio furniture and top lounge chairs and porch swings with colourful, stylish and durable outdoor fabrics. New outdoor upholstery complements the garden, and creates an inviting space to sit and relax.

Fire up the grill! Barbeques are the epitome of summer entertaining, and are excellent for opening out the living space, and making the most of British summertime. Fingers crossed for blue skies.

Summer lights Lighting can bring a magical and welcoming feel to the garden, and is a perfect solution for casting a warm glow on a late summers evening. From lanterns to fairylights there are a wealth of possibilities, many of which benefit from being solar powered, an environmental and cost efficient benefit.

Let the drinks flow There’s nothing better than enjoying a cold refreshing drink or two in the afternoon sun. Accessories like wine coolers and ice buckets are the perfect must-have tools in the quest for refreshment.

3

Transform your wardrobe Before summer arrives, have a wardrobe clear out and ensure all of your summer clothes and accessories are within easy reach, and all those thick winter jumpers are put away to create some much needed space.

10

Dining al fresco Prepare the patio and dust down the decking! One of the most satisfying ways to dine in summer is outside, making the most of the lighter evenings and warm breezes.

4

Pass with flying colours Giving the walls a fresh coat of paint is a simple way of brightening and rejuvenating the home. Whether you choose to get creative with colour, or opt for a clean, neutral tone, the effect can be surprising. Looking for inspiration? Take a look at the vast spectrum of colours available at Farrow and Ball.

5

Flower power Freshly cut flowers are a welcoming touch to any room, and are a fantastic way of experimenting with colour, and bringing the outside in by creating an attractive summer garden feel throughout.

52

6

Lighten the load The warm nights mean it is time to pack away those heavy duvets, thick curtains, and wool throws, in exchange for crisp linen and cotton to keep you cool and comfortable.

7

Camping out Camping accessories are fantastic for generating a stylish and practical outdoor haven, and are a great way of keeping children entertained and engaged with the great outdoors. This stylish tepee from notonthehighstreet not only looks lovely, but creates a fun and child friendly space for playing and exploring.

11

Eat fresh There is no better time to hit the kitchen and create some light, fresh and summery recipes. Gadgets like a juicer or an ice cream maker could result in some exciting culinary creations.

12

14

17

13

15

18

Be our guest Summer is the perfect time to welcome guests and visitors. With friends and family often coming to stay, it is an ideal opportunity to refresh the guest room with a few focal accessories to update and revitalise the space.

Cleaning up Having a deep clean of the house can blow away the cobwebs and make everything seem fresher and brighter. Getting rid of those unused or unwanted items creates valuable, versatile living space, which may have been previously overlooked.

Fun and games Outdoor games are an ideal way of making the most of the sunshine, and provide hours of entertainment for all ages. Games such as Swingball, tennis, and croquet are easy and cost effective to set up, and can be a fun means of bonding and socialising. Capture the moment There has never been a better time to discover the joy of photography, a richly rewarding hobby, which captures the beauty of summer. The photographs make a wonderful personal touch in any room and act as a lasting reminder of the fun that was shared.

16

Good things in store Invest in some attractive and striking storage solutions to maximise the space available, and ensure everything has its place.

Summer scents A perfect way of injecting an instant burst of summer to the home is through fragrance. A carefully chosen scented candle or room spray can evoke an instant feeling of freshness and brightness; regardless of the weather.

Get green fingered Growing fruit, vegetables and herbs is a rewarding activity, and results in an abundance of fresh and delicious seasonal produce. For homes with smaller gardens, or apartments, window boxes are a wonderful space saving solution, which allow you to savour the fruits of your labour.

19

Water delight Installing a pond or water feature makes a striking focal point for the garden and can attract wild life, creating a natural paradise which will be thriving in the summer, and can be enjoyed all year round.

20

The little things Finishing touches such as a bunting draped decoratively around the home or garden, or attractive hanging baskets adorning the doorways are a small addition, which aid greatly in the creation of a perfect summer paradise.

HEALTH AND WELLBEING

Freshen up in

Malaysia...

meet the Medical Tourism movement Words by Claire Durkin

M

alaysia is situated at the heart of Southeast Asia in the South China Seas, and a warm, tropical climate has made it the perfect stop for almost everything. The focus of this fantastic trip is to highlight the new wave in private health and medical procedures drifting from our own shores and taking root in this exotic, far-flung destination. Malaysia Healthcare Travel Council (MHTC) was established by the Government of Malaysia to promote healthcare and travel services, and our first stop was the federal capital, Kuala Lumpur. The concierge for MHTC is found conveniently in Arrivals, where the charming staff take care of the details of your medical stay. Four of the centres I visited gave me a glimpse into an astonishing array of life-changing procedures and preventative care. Golden Horses Health Sanctuary is a “one stop” medical centre, located in an award-winning five-star hotel, the

54

Palace of Golden Horses. The whole environment is beautiful, lush and calming, with guiding beliefs that “prevention is better than cure”, and that Mother Nature plays the lead role in our holistic wellbeing. All the key centres are located in the expansive and scenic 150 acre Mines Lake. Here, it’s about rejuvenation: the doctors are highly-trained in many disciplines, and hail namely from The Royal College of Surgeons. GHSS bears no resemblance to a hospital, and over 800,000 health checks have taken place here since 2002. Across the lake is the wonderful Mines Wellness Hotel, where traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture and naturopathic therapies come into their own. The hotel, which is on the edge of a small beach, has a very natural and casual atmosphere. Here, they adhere to the idea of yin-yang, inspired by wisdom dating back 5,000 years. In Chinese philosophy, yin-yang are concepts describing how contrary forces

HEALTH AND WELLBEING

are actually complementary – light and dark, male and female, fire and water – and are thought of as physical manifestations of duality. This is a primary guideline of Chinese medicine. I was invited to have my health read through a long pulse, with my arm resting on a silky cushion. I was fascinated by the acupuncture, which left me feeling extremely relaxed. Before and after the procedure, I was refreshed with fragrant tea made from infusions of herbs, measured and carefully dispensed into almosttranslucent teabags. This whole experience was very pleasant, and enhanced by a truly delicious lunch at the hotel. Chopsticks? Yes. Dental care is taken very seriously in Malaysia, and the top stop is the Imperial Dental Specialist Centre in Kuala Lumpur. This is an integrated beauty and aesthetic centre providing solutions for all dental issues, with implants and invisible braces just for starters. On to Penang, the “Pearl of the Orient”, and as a free-trade zone, the Government controls the prices of professional fees, which are the same for overseas visitors as they are for locals. Procedures here are mainly of a cosmetic nature, and very popular. All the hospitals I saw were utterly awe-

inspiring, in particular the Penang Adventist Hospital, which is a non-profit making enterprise with charity status. It is part of an international Adventist network of 600 hospitals, clinics and dispensaries. Walking inside gave a broad feeling of industry and energy. Dr J Earl Gardner established the hospital in 1924, and charismatic Dr KH Low spoke to us at length about how it has evolved since then. The Adventist is one of the oldest private hospitals in Malaysia, and although it isn’t strictly religious, it does cater for many different faiths. There is also a holistic (Healing Community of Christ) approach, and it has grown to become a tertiary healthcare centre for the Malaysian community and international visitors.Today, it offers 22 treatments and is supported by more than 80 specialists, using the latest equipment and facilities. Each surgeon brings knowledge, experience and concern for the patient. My time in Malaysia has been unforgettable. Of course, apart from the medical side, Kuala Lumpur and Penang are wonderful places to visit for the culture. This has been an education. The hotels are top-drawer, and the food was exceptional. The people I met during the different experiences

were truly delightful, and had a profound effect on me. I want to say thank you for the patience and generosity shown to us. I didn’t want to leave. Special gratitude to Jane Wilson, who invited me to join her on this extraordinary journey. TRAVEL

Tenerife chic starts with the Ritz-Carlton Abama Words by Nina Saville There are all sorts in Tenerife: from cheap package hotels to five-star lux establishments – and there’s the Ritz-Carlton Abama; enthroned high on a cliff top in splendid isolation, overlooking its 160 hectare private estate on the tranquil south west coast of the island in Guía de Isora.

H

istorically, the hotel was discreetly managed by the Ritz-Carlton, but the name was not emblazoned on the portals of the elegant terracotta façade. In June 2014, playing to its greatest strengths, it emerged from the shadows and was re-named ‘The Ritz-Carlton Abama’ – a hotel group synonymous with luxury, sophistication and fantastic service. Breakfast is at the Veranda restaurant in the main citadel. Whilst waiting for an omelette at the egg station, Richard, a visiting guest from Newcastle, who

happens to be an hotelier, marvels at the warm service and effortless grace of the staff creating a harmonious atmosphere. “Never a sullen face,” he says. Post the extensive international buffet, we are ready for solar supine pursuits. The maître d’ advises us to go to the adults only pool, El Mirador, one of nine; including a huge family pool at the hotel’s epicenter, three private pools exclusive to the Ritz-Carlton villas, and two natural sea water pools down by the beach. We commandeer a golf buggy courtesy of the porter, chauffeured by a lively and charming intern who sails past the four exclusive rows of villas of which the Tagor accommodation reigns supreme: adults only, butler service, complimentary poolside snacks and a personal buggy at the guests’ disposal. At the El Mirador’s exquisite infinity pool with views of the island Gomera, we meet Lucy from Holland. “Nothing is too much trouble for the staff,” she says. “This is my fifth visit

in two years with my husband Ewald and we’re coming again in October. The guests are also lovely – everyone is so friendly.” The pool proves to be a perfect hub for discovering what culinary delight to indulge in next. With ten restaurants, it’s not surprising that food dominates the conversation. “Have you been to the El Mirador restaurant?” she asks. “It’s one of our favourites,” she continues. “The fish is perfect, and it’s such a romantic spot, eating on the terrace overlooking the ocean. And the Kabuki restaurant, it has a Michelin star. It’s the best Japanese food I have ever tasted!” Hearing this, Ewald looks up from his thriller. “Ach, you have to taste the Wagyu beef with Ponzu sauce, and baby burgers with sticky rice. And the sushi… beautiful!” The two Star Michelin MB, orchestrated by celebrated chef Martin Berasategui, is by all accounts a very pukka affair too, with innovative dishes

reflecting his renowned gastronomic gifts. We hop aboard the RC’s green open train back to the main house and our lovely Moorish inspired sea-view room with an expansive television and an enormous comfortable bed. There are 469 rooms, suites and villas, including the new Club Level accommodation on the top floor, offering a dedicated private lounge with spectacular views of Mount Tiede, serving complimentary, freshlymade snacks, and alcohol all day. Don’t think that kids are persona non grata. It’s famously family-friendly here. and four paddle courts, daily keep-fit classes, including Pilates and yoga, and an award-winning spa, which offers all sorts of exotic treatments. Returning to culinary delights. Dinner at El Mirador – tender and delectable scallops, a fruity gazpacho full of ripe summer flavours, followed by a succulent and delicate wild sea bass, coupled with a crisp, white Verdejo wine. And to share, a zingy pineapple carpaccio tempered by the honeyed, orange blossom jelly – superb! Lucy was right. We are very happy to stay in the domain of the hotel, switching off and enjoying the daily grind of pleasurable activities, with a brief nod to cultural

attractions to relieve the stress of relaxing. Whale and dolphin watching is on the agenda for us; guests can book the trip at the hotel’s excursion desk. A black limo transfers us from the hotel to the busy Porto Colon, 20 minutes away in Costa Adeje. We step aboard a small sailboat with nine other excited passengers. It’s an edgy experience. The adventure starts with negotiating the choppy waters whilst walking along the narrow deck to the helm – not for the faint hearted. But when the skipper, Alvaro, shouts “Over there!’’ pointing to the front of the boat, it’s worth taking the risk. A large pod of pilot whales

is sighted; we’re so near to the glistening fins. One of the advantages of being in a smaller vessel is that everyone is ecstatic, including Alvaro, who announces that he hasn’t seen a sighting like this in two years. And then, the dolphins - schools of them, skip and skim around the boat their little ones in tow. The return journey holds other human fascinations. The skipper indicates a hippy commune ensconced in makeshift dwellings on the rock face, which he tells us has been there for 20 years, and further on it’s back to nature, sailing past a nudist colony on the coastline. Back at the hotel, it’s time for a cocktail and a

We switch from Cuba to Japan, feasting at star restaurant Kabuki. The menu, created by Daniel Franco, is a revelation – a procession of sublime plates including silky oysters and razor clams, fried quail egg with white truffles, and for sashimi lovers – usuzukuri; heavenly morsels of sweet, tender alfonsiño (local fish). A standing ovation for a veritable theatre of superlative Japanese cuisine. Next day, it’s an early morning power walk and Pilates class to counter the excess of Epicurean delights, and a buggy down to the perfectly coved sandy beach for a bracing swim, and a light lunch of mojitos and mussels. For solo luxury travellers, the hotel has created an intriguing new venture: Me, Myself and I – the ultimate personal pampering experience. Single guests stay in the luxury Tagor Villas, without a supplement, dipping into a tasting menu which includes a gourmet picnic on the beach, spa treatments, private Pilates classes, a dedicated concierge and a beach butler to boot. The endless enjoyment of this gorgeous pleasure dome is drawing to a close as we prepare tracks to return to the UK.

Property as your Pension With the largest shake up to pensions in a 100 years, according to politician George Osborne, one in three people over 55 are expected to cash in failing pensions for property, but is this the right option for you?

S

tories in the newspapers, across the internet and on television suggest some people over the age of 55 may cash their pensions in to invest in property. But just what are the merits of making bricks and mortar the cornerstone of your investment, whether you are approaching retirement age, or already within the threshold? Annuities have failed people and offer such a poor return for savers planning to retire with rates as low as 4% and 5%. This is not all the fault of the annuity providers; a number of economic factors, gilts prices and interest rates being two, have coincided to depress annuity rates. Whilst I have been saying for many years that people should look at alternatives to annuities and take greater control over their retirement plan, companies like mine are not able to make the impact the Government recently have. Taking control is a theme I have been promoting for a number of years, as it follows the path I have taken myself. However, along the way, I couldn’t have achieved success without professional support and strong partners.

Cashing in your pension It almost seems too good to be true – if you are over 55 and wish to cash in your pension you can in full from now onwards! Many people have upwards of £50,000 and the thought of using this now is of course enticing, however, be aware of two important factors: • The tax bill: 25% of your pension is tax-free and the remainder will be taxed at your marginal rate and in some cases, affect your marginal rate. This could be expensive! • What will you live on after you retire if you spend it? Do you have a plan or are you considering investment through cashing in your pension. Many people plan to cash in their pension to invest in UK buy-to-let (BTL) property, with recent surveys suggesting up to one in three may do this. I fully support this philosophy, however I believe people should seek professional advice before doing so. Financial, investment and tax consultation are all key elements to making a successful decision. On the flip side to cashing in your pension, the tax advantages to retaining a pension plan are difficult to ignore. Whilst your funds are in your pension they grow free of Capital Gains Tax and Income Tax, and can be passed to your estate tax free of tax, subject to your circumstances.

The case for Bricks and Mortar There are many elements to investing in property, and strategies you can use to leverage your monies invested. Like any investment, advice should be considered and research into the type of BTL investment that fits in with your retirement plan. People closer to retirement may opt for fixed income plans rather than direct BTL investments as they offer certainty and less hand on work, whilst direct investment into property offer some monthly income, but more importantly, capital growth, providing you carefully select your investment.

The retirement Growth Plan If you are 55 or under, growing your retirement pot should be your main goal, and BTL investments offer an ideal solution for a number of reasons: • Property prices double every 10 years • Gearing – capital growth is achieved on the property’s value and not the capital outlay • Compounded growth – property benefits from the compounded growth model • Rental income increases in line with inflation • Lending rates do not increase with inflation • Planned exit – property is not a liquid asset like shares, but the UK resale market remains strong and most property investments can be exited within three to six months

The retirement income plan If you are looking to retire or achieve income, then utilising capital to generate a fixed income maybe more suitable. A fixed income plan is where a capital investment into non-correlated assets, i.e. those not linked to stocks and shares, can be made subject to your circumstances. Typical schemes will offer capital protection, and a fixed rate of income paid quarterly or annually of between 7% and 10% PA. These investments can be made a number of ways: either through your pension, with cash or with an ISA offering secure passive income and an excellent alternative to an annuity.

ith the desire to provide “a momentary retreat from the vivid dance of life,” Lola’s Apothecary is creating something of a stir amidst savvy beauty enthusiasts, and it isn’t difficult to see why. Each of the lovingly handmade products has been created with care and precision, using natural ingredients which are renowned for their soothing and calming properties. Something which soon becomes apparent is at the heart of the Devonshire company, and of Lola herself. From small beginnings in her kitchen, alongside exotic spices and sweet delights, Lola began to conjure up homemade potions, based on age-old beauty wisdom, in order to care for her own sensitive skin. Having understood the difficulties of finding skincare which is not only gentle and nourishing, but also luxurious and sophisticated, Lola began dreaming up products with a very clear vision. After gifting a friend at a birthday party, her fragrant creations became sought-after through word of mouth. From this point forward, Lola was inspired to craft a range of beauty wonders which marry effective natural skincare with the perfumed glamour that makes conventional, often chemically-laden, cosmetics so appealing. Originally employed as a creative professional in London, Lola decided to take the leap and pursue her vision further, swapping the bright lights of London, for the rural tranquillity of the Devonshire countryside. Lola was joined by Dominic, who shared her vision of beauty and grace, and in winter 2013, they embarked upon an adventure to find a new home beyond the city walls.Together they now successfully run Lola’s Apothecary from a picturesque cattle farm in Devon, where they are inspired to create beauty saviours with a conscience. Lola explains: “At the heart of Lola’s Apothecary is a vision of beauty and grace: the idea that a holistic lifestyle can be enhanced by moments of sensory

indulgence. We are inspired to create couture beauty products that marry fine fragrance with effective natural skincare - to bring the sophistication and decadence of luxury cosmetics back into the realm of natural beauty.” The products themselves are something of a work of art, their elegance and simplicity creates something strikingly beautiful, and encapsulates the essence of nature, while at the same time evoking a luxurious and decadent feel. The packaging - glass bottles sealed with tiny corks, with rose petals and lavender set invitingly within - are the stuff of fairy tales, and would make a welcome addition to tired bathroom shelves, injecting not only some much needed glamour, but heart. The treasures of Lola’s Apothecary are filled with goodness extracted only from the natural ingredients, with healing properties to make even the most sensitive skin feel pampered. With such a plethora of products available on our shelves, it is often all too easy to forget to spare a glance at the ingredients which go into them, and the means in which they are produced and tested. Lola’s Apothecary strip away the complexities of the science lab, and opts for the honest healing properties of nature. From their farm kitchen in the English countryside, each product is formulated and hand-blended to create beauty wonders in micro batches, ensuring freshness and quality. Lola continues: “Naturally active ingredients and potent botanical extracts are ethically sourced and thoughtfully blended to promote deep healing and radiance. Our naturally fragrant things are free from synthetic fragrance, mineral oils, sulphates, parabens and other undesirable chemicals. Most of our products do not contain any preservatives at all; we only use natural preservatives and antioxidants where necessary.” Every product is complemented by a gorgeous scent of pure essential oils, blended with aroma-therapeutic benefits and sensory pleasure in mind.

marks and signs of ageing, can be found in every bottle. It is this deep knowledge and passion for the properties of natural ingredients which really shines through Lola’s handmade products, and endears us to the products and indeed to her. With avid interest from bloggers and beauty columnists alike, and online custom flooding in through the website, and popular online vehicles such as notonthehighstreet.com, the future looks bright for Lola’s Apothecary. It is not simply the soothing and healing natural ingredients, or the beautiful luxurious feel the products ooze, but the passion and care Lola herself puts in to every element of the company. Being responsible from everything from photography to design affords her the opportunity to deliver her vision of natural

beauty and wellness, and create a strong and clear brand identity, with a guarantee of love and care in every bottle. This most endearing dedication and striving for the personal touch paired with an unyielding work ethic, is truly the hidden beauty of these products. “Our dream is that our lovingly handmade products will become a blissful part of your daily self-care ritual, that they not only bless you with gorgeous skin, but also provide you with a momentary retreat from the vivid dance of life.” To discover more, please visit http://www. lolasapothecary.com/

t’s a fact: when it comes to baking, Britain’s become nutty as a fruitcake. But not all are gifted with the ability to whip up a croquembouche at a moment’s notice, which is why there is now a patisserie on every corner, a bakery at every turn, and a delicious cake right in front of me. With so many options to choose from, it is rare for a bakery to stand out so strikingly from the crowd, but Lily Vanilli’s is something quite different. Having already crafted a reputable standing, and with a fan base featuring the rich and famous, host Lily Jones is no newcomer to the baking world. Her cake designs range from the quaint to the flamboyant, the pretty to the macabre, but all are fully bespoke and baked fresh to order. The Lily Vanilli Bakery is the latest addition to Lily’s repertoire, following the successes of books, radio features and even a cake-cameo in a music

video. So it was a pleasure to speak to this award winning baker, and find out what sets her aside from the dozen. First things first, where does your passion for baking come from? I baked with my grandmother as a young child, she was from the old school – simple, English recipes, repeated always without variation and to perfection; scones,Victoria sponge and so on. I was completely transfixed. Now, your cake designs are breath-taking – where does your inspiration come from? Thank you! I always start with ingredients. I’m always sourcing new things or experimenting with pretty ways to use ingredients, so I pull out everything I have and work from there.

Recently, baking has taken the country by storm – in your opinion, what is the trend of the moment? I always avoid thinking about trends, so I’m not the best person to ask, but in general, people seem to be interested in fresher, healthier ingredients, which I’m very happy about. Amidst an abundance of bakers and cake decorators, how does Lily Vanilli stand out from the crowd? I try not to look at what anyone else is doing. I’ve been doing this for a long time now and my style is always changing and evolving, because that’s what keeps me interested. There are a lot more people [baking for business] now than when I started, but I just stay focused on what I’m doing and see how it grows.

With such an impressive portfolio, is it possible to choose a favourite design? My favourite is always what’s new – I never make the same cake twice. My favourite is always the one I’m working on right now. You have had some notable clients – when creating designs for events, do you have sole input into the final product, or do your clients come to you with an idea? It varies! I offer a service that’s fully bespoke – from the flavour through to the design – my theory being that if you’re going to have something as decadent as a cake, it should be exactly as you like it. Having said that, I’m always humbled with how much people trust me to come up with something for them – I often get a loose brief and go away to make something unique for the customer, and that’s a real pleasure. You have headed a wide range of projects, what’s the next venture? I’m working on an edible garden project at the bakery, and in Homerton at the Adam and Eve pub, with the florist, Palais Flowers. Lots of rare and delicious flowers! With cakes like these, this is a trend that will surely never go out of fashion.

Puppetry in motion

Since its creation, the Norwich Puppet Theatre has woven itself into the fabric of the local community, as well as the wider puppeteer circle. Now, as they approach their 35th anniversary, Katie Bamford explores their journey so far, and how they hope to continue shaping the world of puppetry in the future

rom classic Punch and Judy shows, to Supermarionation made famous by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson in the 1960s, puppetry has a long and illustrious history on both stage and screen. While some may disregard the art form as ‘childish’, the talented and creative individuals at Norwich Puppet Theatre are working tirelessly to continue this traditional genre, both as entertainment, and as a form of education. “It’s such a vibrant and traditional medium,” enthuses Joy Hayes, the director of Norwich Puppet Theatre. “I feel puppetry can be a strong place for learning, it covers many aspects, like writing, dextrous skills, design, making - it can be used in a multitude of ways for creative development.” Indeed, education is arguably a key component of the Norwich Puppet Theatre, both today and since the beginning. One of only three building-based puppet theatres in England, the Norwich Puppet Theatre was founded by Ray and Joan DaSilva in 1979 as a base for their touring company. With the help of the local community and the Norwich Historic Churches Foundation, from whom the building is rented, St James’ Church was converted into a

175-seat theatre, with a further 50 seat Octagon studio and office space added later. After a year of renovation, the first performance opened on 1 December 1980, making 2015 Norwich Puppet Theatre’s 35th year of creating and performing puppet shows. “They wanted to build a landscape of building-based theatres to provide a focus for the community, and provide training opportunities,” explains Joy. “I believe they wanted to build a legacy, and provide the country with a centre for puppetry.” Offering an extensive education programme, Norwich Puppet Theatre tours around schools, performing and running workshops for pupils from Key Stage One to secondary school level. There are also opportunities for learning within the theatre itself; during the run-up to their Christmas 2014/15 production of ‘Beauty and the Beast’, two students from Nottingham Trent University worked with the company for a five week period. “I’m keen to offer masterclasses, so we can help nurture the talent from the grassroots,” says Joy, who after studying a Theatre degree at university, went on to work with Puppets and People in Newcastle.

“At the time there was very little professional training,” explains Joy. “Now you have courses at the Central School of Speech and Drama, but then you just had to learn on the job.” Currently, Norwich Puppet Theatre is working on an adaptation of children’s book Oddly written by local author Joyce Dunbar, which will be performed in summer 2015. Although they usually hold auditions for their productions, Oddly is specifically for apprentices, who are being trained and mentored throughout the process. Passing on the knowledge of the art of puppet making couldn’t be more important. As Joy explains, each production can take over a year to organise, with everything from funding, making and rehearsing needing to be prepared. “The ‘make’ stage generally takes three to four months. The makers are highly skilled individuals, and we aim to draw together a creative team who bring both the puppets and the set to life.” While Norwich Puppet Theatre is clearly doing a sterling job to connect puppetry with education as an individual institution, they also work extensively with other companies.

ARTS AND CULTURE

“At Christmas, we’re collaborating with Rip Stop theatre to do a reimagining of ‘Rumpelstiltskin’,” explains Joy. “We’re going to use the central themes of weaving and spinning, and reflect them in the puppets. It also has ties with the local area in Norwich, and hopefully will connect with our education package.” Perhaps most interestingly, they began a collaboration with Puppet Animation Scotland, who organises the manipulate Festival, which is held every year in February, with some of the events having been hosted at the Norwich Puppet Theatre since 2012. “The festival is mainly visual theatre, a crossover between dance theatre and puppetry. It showcases new work that fuses mediums, but also traditional puppet work as well,” says Joy. “It’s more geared to an adult audience, to show that it’s not just something for kids. manipulate brings in international performers - each festival works hard to bring artists to England to see work they might not otherwise get a chance to see.” Every year, manipulate offers an eclectic and interesting mix of performances, with the 2015 festival alone showcasing the UK premiere of a performance by Belgium dancer Sabine Molenaar, who is both choreographer and dancer for her company Sandman. The festival also featured a traditional puppet show, ‘Autumn Portraits’ by the Sandglass Theatre, and hand-crafted rod-puppets by Eric Bass. The work Norwich Puppet Theatre are doing for puppetry and theatre as a whole is vastly important and far-reaching, as they help bring different forms of visual theatre to local, national, and international audiences. They have also formed connections with many organisations, including Move-Award, which aims to maintain a high standard of performance and education in all forms of visual theatre, and of which Norwich Puppet Theatre are currently the only UK-based member. Joy describes this membership as “hugely important,” going on to say, “we have to continue creating and developing partnerships. In this climate it is essential to keep taking risks, like with manipulate, and not just be safe and commercial. We aim to introduce the audience to things that are enjoyable, but also new, and of course it is a delicate balance between the two.” Celebrating 35 years is a huge achievement for any organisation and no one can deny that the Norwich Puppet Theatre has flourished. Right from the very beginning, their aim has been to promote puppetry, and educate professionals and the public alike about the art form, and as they approach their anniversary, Joy is certain this is something that will continue in the future: “Our vision is to carry on and build a centre for celebration of puppet training, a regional hub of creativity, and to promote national excellence.” For more information, please visit http://www.puppettheatre.co.uk/

The Bentley

Mulsanne Words by Kevin Haggarthy

‘We begin where others end...’ - Bentley spokesman t can take as little as 17 hours to build a standard factory production car. It takes an average of 500 hours to build a Bentley. This flagship Bentley Mulsanne will take even longer to build; not least because one of the unique pleasures of buying one is personalisation. There is no price limit to the options available – it runs as far as your budget allows, but other than that, anything and everything is available. The entry-level £228,000 is

I

only the beginning. Take the car we are testing here. Its options list adds another £53,000 to your bill. They read with interest; deep-pile Wilton carpet mats £100, entertainment specification £21,000, back curtains to the rear cabin £5,000, etc. Money is not the point here, for serious financial muscle is a given. Yet there is much more to the Bentley Mulsanne than money and opulence. Quality is second to none, over every inch, nook and cranny visible to the eye.

MOTORING

The total quality experience begins from your first point of contact with the car; the touch and feel of the door handles, the feel of the leather seating, the chrome switchgear on the dashboard, surrounded by craftsmanship and care in every corner. You can be forgiven for sitting and wallowing in appreciation of the cabin for a very long time. Outside it’s all aluminium. Inside, it’s wood, leather, chrome, and it’s, well, seriously impressive. The driver’s Bentley Yet oddly enough this is, both in character and on-road behaviour, a driver’s Bentley. It’s simply astonishing how quickly you can punt this near-on

three-ton battleship through challenging roads; the combination of technology and chassis genius defying the laws of physics. You have a choice of four drive settings, from comfort to hardcore, but the magical Bentley setting is the cause for celebration for those who see these cars first and foremost as the ultimate Bentley Boys motor. This firms up steering and suspension to turn the Mulsanne from Dr Jeckyll to Mr Hyde. No wonder, when the engine is a whopping 6.75 litre twin-turbo charged V8. With that comes 550 bhp and 752 lb of torque. The engine revs only to 4,500 rpm, marking the effortless low-rev torque expected of this majestic beast. Go easy with the throttle and four of the

eight cylinders will disengage under light load, whilst engine efficiency is boosted further by lightweight pistons, conrods and crankshaft. The eight-speed automatic ZF gearbox is flexible enough to adapt to all conditions and demands, and the clever trick is, you will hardly even notice. The Mulsanne may be a quarter of a million pounds, but it is a car to buy and keep forever. Bentleys like these are often passed on to future generations within the family. We thus become custodians not only of a very fine motor car, but one of the diminishing few that still embodies the best in British craftsmanship, and a proud motoring heritage.

Audi RS 5

Cabriolet Words by Kevin Haggarthy

The Audi Cabriolet is a familiar sight on our roads and has been for some years, mainly because they haven’t changed the look of it all that much. But why change a winning formula?

94

MOTORING

I

t’s always been a bit of a posh, sophisticated understatement; a subtle expression of quality without being offensive or over the top. It is the choice of the sophisticated well-to-do.

From strength to strength Audi’s substantial technological development has found its way into the various subtle reiterations of the Cabriolet, incorporating the latest in both design and engineering technology. We throw caution to the wind with our test car choice, and go for the best of the bunch, the RS 5.This model is four-wheel-drive with a big V8 engine churning out 450 PS, and capable of 62 mph in 4.9 seconds. Derestricted, it will top 174 mph, and the power is delivered seamlessly through a seven speed S Tronic gearbox, with no interruption in power through the gears. With this one, you want for nothing in terms of specification, trim, quality and performance. What you gain is just that extra bit of style, stupendous performance, and grip and refinement that waves goodbye to any preconceptions about needing the added stiffness of a coupé for hardcore grip and cornering. Top up or down, four people can share this exhilarating ride in greater comfort in the front, whilst acceptably so in the rear. There’s even 320 litres

of boot-space to complete the practical family value appeal. Driver and passenger will want for nothing once seated, as the infotainment package is as comprehensive as they come, and so pleasant is the sound quality of the music, you can do away with meaningless conversation about birds and flowers in the countryside. Unhumble rumble Yet the ultimate pleasure is derived from what remains at this car’s heart; the amazing burbling V8. Funnily enough, it’s not the raw power of the engine that hits you the most, it’s the overall refinement and ride quality which blends so well with this car’s power. It is, of course, the same engine powering the seductive-looking Audi R8, yet tamed appropriately for this high-performing cruiser. You’ll smile every time you tickle the throttle and feel that instant push of power; along with this car’s flat, evenly-weighted balance on hard cornering. It is fast, safe, and comfortable; combine that with the car’s sleek prestige lines, and you have the answer to the RS 5 Cabriolet longevity. Usability completes the equation, for the optional acoustic roof satisfies any final doubts about noise, ensuring your Audi Cabriolet experience is no different to driving a hard top.The challenge is finding the opportunity to use all that performance. I can assure you, that if you own this car, you will.

Speciale Ferrari 458

Words by Kevin Haggarthy

It’s highly unlikely you’ll have read a bad word about the Ferrari 458. If you’ve heard anything about it at all, you’ll know it to be sensational. It is.

96

MOTORING

I

f you have never come across such supercar performance before, your first experience of the Ferrari 458, driven as it should be, will be an event you will never forget. In over 23 years of road testing and writing about motor cars, it is rare of me to shut the door on even a very good test car for the final time without at least two or three points of criticism worth relating to the reader. It’s now two days ago since I tested the 458 Speciale, and for the life of me I cannot find a point worthy of genuine criticism on this car... and I’ve been thinking about it for a whole 48 hours. It’s that good. Wow I hardly need to tell you that in the traditional way we tend to judge these things, the 458 Speciale is an amazing performer. 0-62 mph in three seconds - about the time it has taken you to read this sentence. Hang on tight and it’ll hit a top speed of 202 mph, and in the meanwhile, you’ll

experience the exhilaration of a mixture of 590 bhp and 590NM of torque from the most powerful, naturally-aspirated V8 engine Ferrari has produced to date. Less weight, more power The 458 Speciale is a hefty 90 kg lighter than the 458. It isn’t just a matter of ‘less is more’, but a complete work over from the ground up, including every single element of the car that has the slightest influence on performance. Let’s begin with the engine. Power and torque are increased through redesigning certain engine components and reducing internal friction by the use of lighter materials and lubricants.Torque has been improved across the entire power curve, achieving an exceptional power to weight ratio of 14:1, the highest ever achieved by a naturallyaspirated V8. Aerodynamic modifications to the front and rear improve downforce on hard cornering, as well

as drag performance on the straights. At the front, vertical flaps close at low speeds to feed cooling air to the radiators. At high speed they open, reducing the flow of air to the radiators to reduce drag. And there’s more; powerful carbon ceramic brakes that do a fine job enabling the special Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres to scrub off speed. These tyres were designed specifically for this car after lengthy track and simulator test sessions, and there’s a different exhaust configuration to accommodate the greater power. In fact, Ferrari have fine-tuned this car for every pound of weight saving it can achieve. The rear windscreen, for example, is made of a special lightweight toughened glass called Lexan, and the rest of the glazing is ultra-thin, while the redesigned bumper and diffuser are resin transfer moulded, and the underside of the body is total carbon fibre. Here to drive Step inside and the singular purpose of this

97

MOTORING

machine becomes clear. All carpet is removed, there’s no radio, sat nav, or Bluetooth. You are here to drive. The dials are all directly within the driver’s view, with that most important rev counter sitting appropriately at its heart. The steering wheel is a genius of clean and safe design – allowing you to keep your hands on the wheel, housing indicators, horn warning, wipers, flasher, a bumpy road button for softer setting on the suspension, and the ‘I dare you’ Mannetino switch, giving various gradations of drive from Wet to Sport to Race, and if you’re brave, switch up another two notches for partial and ultimately total disposure of any help in extreme handling situations. This amazing story of genius goes on well beyond the space we have to tell you about it, yet it manifests in the overriding single purpose of a Ferrari… the driving. And what’s truly great about it is that it was designed for the driver without special talent to be able to enjoy and exploit its potential.

You can take this car out on track, slide it hard, and the oversteer experience is tuned into the driving dynamics, making it a pleasure to drive. That said, so high are its limits, acquired skill and experience are recommended. We didn’t get the chance to drive the Speciale on track, but from past familiarity with the standard 458, it was easy to suss the differences between the two cars straight away. The 90 kg loss of weight is instantly noticeable within the first couple of hundred yards, as is the fact that it is significantly louder and faster. Those fantastic Michelin Cup tyres require heat to grip, so you’ll need to work the car up some to really start experiencing this car’s potential.Yet the quality of communication between car and driver is such, you can pretty much predict how much heatdependent available grip there is; the key is to know your own limits, and understand that the car’s are much higher.

Hold on…. The acceleration of the Speciale is literally blistering, and unless you are familiar with really fast cars, replace ‘blistering’ with unbelievable, shattering, or uncanny. Its cross country pace is stunning too - it’s not unusual to overtake three or four cars on a single carriageway at any one time with loads of power in reserve. It’s satisfying; you’ll grin from the pleasure. Your speed between bends will be a matter of wonderment to most. Liken it to the quickest motor cycles, and even those two-wheel wonders won’t be able to corner with the tight tenacity of a Speciale. I have to line up with my colleagues and sing the common song; the Speciale is one of the best supercars the world has ever known… at any price.

This amazing story of genius goes on well beyond the space we have to tell you about it, yet it manifests in the overriding single purpose of a Ferrari
