Thank you for your flexibility. The meetings will generally be scheduled for Monday afternoons. Professional Development Plan This Professional Development Plan outlines the expectations and Professional Development offerings outlined in the Great Falls Elementary School Improvement and Strategic Plan. The plan will be evaluated and updated throughout the year.
Mission: Professional development is an ongoing, multi-faceted, research-based process, strategically planned to provide both individual, systematic, and systemic change to support continuous growth of teacher instructional practices and student performance.
Philosophy:
Professional development is critical to improving student achievement. Professional development will be guided by a school commitment to providing direction and alignment to school and district goals and SC State Standards. Professional development is designed in a collaborative manner. Professional development provides differentiated learning opportunities. Professional development supports the implementation of research-based practices. Professional development is based on multiple data points. Professional development is informed by data conferences with teachers throughout the year.
Attributes of Successful Professional Development:

A report on the progress of the professional development plan and the progress towards actualizing the School Improvement Plan will be made to the Chief Instructional Officer and full Board of School Trustees quarterly.
The content of the Great Falls Elementary School Professional Development Plan is being supported and provided in part by school level Literacy and Math Coaches, Winthrop University, Solution Tree, Leading Up, LLC, Heinemann Publishers, and the NY Teacher’s College.
Needs Assessment: As a part of the ongoing professional development planning cycle, the Great Falls Elementary School has reviewed multiple sources of data and school improvement needs. Teacher requests are also considered when developing Professional Development plans. Additionally, priorities, as identified by the AdvancEd Diagnostic Team during a visit in spring of 2019. The following data is taken into consideration when determining the focus of the professional development plan:

School Improvement Goals: 1. By 2023, 51% of students in grades 3-5 will score meets or exceeds on SCREADY ELA. 2. By 2023, 48% of students in grades 3-5 will score meets or exceeds on SCREADY Math. 3. By 2023, the percentage of students receiving an office referral will be reduced from 25% to 15% as evidenced by data from Power School and the School Report Card.
Overarching Goal:
To provide high-quality professional development to all staff members that is aligned with our School Improvement Plan, School Improvement Grant, and Title I. Goal 1: To provide high-quality professional development in literacy that will increase proficiency in reading. Goal 2: To provide high-quality professional development in math that will increase proficiency in math. Goal 3: To provide high-quality professional development in writing that will increase proficiency in writing. Goal 4: To provide high-quality professional development in technology, that will allow for personalized learning and digital literacy to be included in lessons. Goal 5: To provide high-quality professional development in behavioral management, that will decrease suspensions and promote positive behaviors. Goal 6: To provide high-quality professional development in data, that will allow teachers to disaggregate data, and plan for small group instruction – through the NWEA Learning Continuum. Goal 7: To provide high-quality professional development on rigor, engagement, and effective planning, that will allow teachers to strengthen core classroom, Tier I instruction. Goal 8: To provide high-quality professional development in Professional Learning Communities, to increase team capacity and improve student achievement.
Action Plan: Professional Development Activities: At Great Falls Elementary School, we have determined that students at all grade levels continue to struggle with literacy. This is reflected in most of our data. As a result of the professional development activities, instructional staff will gain insights into helping students read and write on grade level and implement strategies for helping students who struggle with reading and writing. They will also understand techniques for teaching content area reading and writing. Furthermore, instructional staff will learn techniques for teaching students how to critically think about their learning and track their data. The goal is to continue to support the success of our students in writing and writing at their appropriate levels while decreasing the literacy gap in our schools. These professional learning activities include:
Learning how to (and being refreshed on how to appropriately) administer the Fountas and Pinnell Assessments Learning to use the data from Fountas and Pinnell to establish Guided Reading Groups. Learning to choose appropriate books for supporting students at their Independent reading levels. Providing opportunities daily for independent reading – to build reading stamina in students.
