with medical care, mental health/counseling, socializing areas, extended stay dormitories, a donation center, and an internet cafĂŠ; these refugees will be embraced with the care that they need to get acclimated to this city which will soon be home. By addressing the basic, psychological, and self fulfillments needs,
in addition to
recognizing the many differences in culture, the spaces and selections are to be universal in design. The color palette chosen is global in colors of Teal Blues, Golds, Fuchsia Pinks, Fresh Greens, Rich Browns, and Creamy Neutrals to embrace the refugees in these comforting tones from home and abroad. Furniture selections are commercial in nature, yet durable and comfortable to meet the needs of all users. Though this building is rectilinear in design, the movement through the space will be created through the use of lines and colors. Welcome to Ogden Utah.

CULTURAL SENSITIVITY Global colors are incorporated into this design for many reasons. With a great number of refugees coming the Middle or near East, the colors of these cultures are vibrant and can have great symbolic meaning. Color is used to assist in wayfinding, and is a universal way to guide persons to areas in a building without having to use a language. The Refuge, will not only provide to the basic needs of the refugees, but also befriend them via the help of volunteer efforts. Becoming acclimated to new surroundings creates anxiety and fear in these persons. Such support systems offered in resettlement centers help the refugees come to terms with past traumatic experiences and adjust to their new society (Behnia, 2007). One of the concerns related to such facilities is the different cultures in which the facility will assist. By making sure that the facility addresses cultural sensitivity in its design, the many cultures being assisted will feel more at ease.

EDUARDO MUDLANE SCHOOL, MOZAMBIQUE AFRICA
CONCEPT
24
The new Eduardo Mundlane School building will be a functional space designed for learning and study at all times of the day. There will be two classrooms on either end of the building with a library in the center. The classrooms will be able to hold 30-40 students in an efficient space that will stimulate learning. The library will house sturdy bookcases with protective, locally made, textiles. The energizing color palette in the interior of the school is designed to encourage learning. The building is designed to allow for adequate air flow and daytime natural lighting. We have added fluorescent lighting to each of the three spaces for evening classes and studying in the library. The window openings will be secured with security bars and metal louvers, that will also adjust light levels and air flow. The roofing will be attached with web trusses that will be open to allow even more ventilation. The eaves of the roof will hang over the edges of the building to protect the openings from the elements.
Objective:
Within a 48 hour time frame create and develop a concept complete with floor plan, renderings, budget, construction timeline to completion, all while developing a high functioning team

The front facade will be a plaster finish, then stenciled with a mural depicting the Acacia tree. The Weber Flame emblem will be entwined in the branches below the leaves of the tree that will be created by the students using their hand prints in green. The Weber State study abroad students will add their handprints in purple. The branches of the tree will display the names of the sponsors, volunteers, and school faculty. The windows will be decorated with traditional beautifying face mask patterns and traditional cultural motifs.
Client profile The Eduardo Mundlane School is located in Mozambique, Africa in a town at the southern tip of the country called Boane. It was named after one of the first independence fighters for Mozambique. The school serves 700-800 children in two shifts during the day. Each building houses at least 2 classrooms that holds 56-60 children for each class due to space restrictions. The ultimate goal for this project is to allow the Eduardo Mundlane School to teach more children. They would like to have electric lighting added to the new building in order to add evening classes. They also would like to be able to reduce the class sizes to 30-40 students per class. The new building will also house a library and study area for the children.

Julie and Deon’s love for Travel inspired the class to put motifs in their tiny studio. Collectively, the class decided to incorporate a map of the world and a compass. The map was made of recycled barn wood and a stencil of the world, and will be hung in the clerestory window area. The compass was another motif that will be sandblasted in to the tile in the bathroom and stenciled in 29

Fog and Mist is a common sight in the early morning hours in the Pacific Northwest. The soft glow of the sun rising as the mist lies low to the ground gives the feeling of mystery ahead, a new beginning to a new day. As the sun rises the thickness of the mist evaporates into the air. Misty Morning was created with multiple levels of opaque to semi translucent acrylic panels resembling the thick mist that is low to the ground, as the sun rises, the thickness of the mist dissipates and thins at higher levels.
Acrylic Light Boxes are the main material, lit from the bottom using LED Strip lighting that can be easily replaced by removing the lower side panels on the base. These energy efficient lights will emit a soft glow around each different level of “Misty Panels. In the center of the fixture is a yellow single LED Bulb to resemble the sun rising. The base is a wooden box built to support the weight of the acrylic panels. The box has a overlay of a sheet of oxidized metal found in wet climates, and to feel as though the mist is coming from the ground.
Create a light fixture for a prominent Pacific Northwestern University, which will be placed in the entry lobby. The light fixture is to be a signature piece but is also functional. The light must illuminate the space and provide adequate light for general circulation.

Misty Morning is designed to be used as a focal point of a prominent Pacific Northwest University Art Museum. This fixture is also designed as ambient lighting in an enclosed area. The LED lighting has the capabilities to be dimmed to create different levels of Mist at different times of the day. Because of the warming feel of the fixture, visitors of the museum will be sure to congregate around to enjoy the artwork on display.

Philip Johnson studied architecture at Harvard under Marcel Breuer and Walter Gropius. In 1945 he began his design of the Glass House. It was inspired by Mies van der Rohe’s Farnsworth House. A year later he purchased 5 acres of land in Connecticut as the future site of the house. The groundbreaking for The Glass House took place in 1948 and was completed a year later. Throughout the next 48 years, Philip Johnson completed multiple projects on the land including the Brick House, the Pavilion, the pool, the Sculpture Gallery, the Ghost House, and the Dog House. The Glass House is 56 ft long, 32 ft wide, 10 ½ ft high. The walls are constructed of steel beams and glass windows. The bathroom is the only object to reach from the floor to ceiling. The designer furniture and cabinets are primarily horizontal and emphasizes the simplicity of the space. Life magazine wrote of it: “Except when entertaining, Johnson lives alone, servant less and accompanied only by weather, paintings and books.”
