s I sit and reflect on this past week’s photo shoot for our October/November 2012 Issue, I can’t help but feel an overwhelming amount of different emotions all at the same time: anticipation, relief, awe, and disbelief. The number of hours, people, different moving parts, and love that went into this issue surpassed our wildest dreams. But the one thing that keeps ringing in my ear over and over again isn’t the clothes, the jewelry, the articles or the photos; it’s the stories behind those people. This week, as I write, actually marks the beginning of fall fashion in the industry. It’s the time of year women around the country scatter for the latest issue of Vogue, In Style, Vanity Fair, and Harper’s Bazaar, combing
Beyond Fashion
themselves that we forget people that really matter: those that are hurting, those that can’t afford the luxury of filling their closets with the new fall trends or much less have a dinner table to call their own.
over every detail. As our spring and summer wardrobes step aside, boots come out from hiding and coats begin to sing in preparation for their grand entrance. And it’s true, Created Woman did, in fact, set our sights on being the ‘must have’ magazine for this year’s fall fashion. But what we found was so much more than that. It’s bigger and has much more depth. It goes “Beyond Fashion”.
However, in this, our first fall fashion issue, it’s my privilege to introduce you to women who’ve actually gone beyond the call of style. They’ve listened and answered the call of those that aren’t as lucky as you and I. Although creative in their designs, their love and passion for the causes they believe in only flame the fires and keep them going. We’re lucky to have worked alongside them and even more honored to introduce you to the lovely ladies who so boldly take a stand and go beyond the call of duty. They’re truly living out who they were created to be.
In an industry where we can be inundated with status, who we are and what we wear, we can get lost in a closet filled with Dolce and Gabbana, the smell of leather boots, and the hottest trends, forgetting the stories of who made them. Who loved them before everyone else? Who sacrificed? We can actually be so entrenched in the clothes
“
The number of hours, people, different moving parts, and love that went into this issue surpassed our wildest dreams.
”
For those who are living out who you were created to be, be sure to remember to go beyond. For those that are still waiting patiently, stop to listen and open your eyes a little wider to the world around you. Maybe, just maybe, you’ll realize the call to go beyond has just been a whisper you couldn’t hear before. We hope you enjoy our 2nd issue of Created Womam ,“Beyond Fashion,” and enjoy becoming the woman you were created to be.
Heather Frierson
What these ladies all have in common is that they’re living out their destiny while keeping their focus on what really matters: their family, their friends, and the time they have at family dinners and their health (pg 26). They’ve all realized that without those things in order, destiny can sometimes be lost in the background as we hurry and scurry around in our day to day lives. We discover, in the end, that because we wait patiently on our destiny (pg 62) we’re actually better, from the inside out.

Lean Taco Soup 10 oz of lean ground beef 15 oz can pinto beans 15 oz can kidney beans 15 oz can chili beans 15 oz can corn 32 oz can dice tomatoes 2 oz taco seasoning ½ cup onion
Serves 14 Serving Size – 1 cup Calories – 226 Fat – 4.3gms Fiber – 8.7gms
1. Brown ground beef and onion in large pot 2. Add all ingredients along with ground beef in crockpot 3. Cook 4 hours on high or 7 hours on low My tip: To save time, cook your beef right when you get home from the grocery store while unloading groceries. If not planning to cook soup that day, freeze cooked meat so that you can easily take it out to prepare on your crockpot day. To get in your veggies, serve with salad. To make is extra special for kids, sprinkle cheese and low fat chips for a few extra calories.
F or today’s busy woman, eating healthy meals at home and getting in exercise can be a challenge. The responsibilities of life are sometimes overwhelming enough. How can a woman possibly add exercise and healthy eating to her schedule? As a fitness designer for busy women, I often see women who try to exercise and eat the way they did when life allowed them much more free time. It’s unrealistic when trying to manage longer “to do” lists, careers, home lives, and extracurricular activities. To get in work outs and healthy meals, changes have to be made. We have to adapt to our current lifestyles if we want to maintain consistency. As a busy woman myself, I’ve had d to learn how to incorporate workouts and nutritious foods into my life. I wanted to have control of my exercise, eating, and body, and not let the demands of life take over. To stay
28 | Created Woman October/November 2012
consistent, I’ve had to learn how to adjust my schedule and add a few simple things in my life. There are two things that I can’t live without: my crockpot and my resistance exercise band. I remember my days before kids. I could come home from work and spend time looking through cook books to prepare a healthy meal for my husband and I. Fast forward 8 years… I still have a career, but now add volunteering for various community and church programs and two kids who are involved in church, sports, etc. The time that I would love to spend preparing an elaborate
meal is just not possible. However, desiring to eat healthy and have a meal together with my family is very important to me. Grabbing fast food for dinner is not something I want to do every day. I had to discover a way to make it work. This lead to me finding my new best friend: “The Crockpot”.
my workout regimen. Resistance bands are an alternative to lifting weights in order to do strength training. They’re effective for increasing muscle tone and can be found at your local sporting store with videos and guidelines for a successful work out. A few reasons why I love the bands:
Yes, even with a crockpot, there’s some planning that’s involved. But the preparation time is doable and takes minimal effort…. even with a busy schedule. I learned that it’s doable for me to spend a few minutes on the weekends planning meals based on my family’s schedule for the upcoming week. Throwing something in the crockpot as I’m making lunches in the mornings has become a normal routine. With just a couple quick tricks, we’re able to have a healthy, home cooked meal together on most nights.
• I can do at least two or three different exercises for every muscle group in the body.
It’s no secret that working and managing a family can make finding time to exercise a struggle. Even if you have a membership to a gym, finding the time to actually get there is half the battle. That’s why I couldn’t live without a couple of resistance bands in
• I can pack them in a suit case to bring on a business or family trip. • I can use them at home on days when my time is limited or when I’m unable to leave my kids. I remember the days when I could spend 1.5 hours working out, if I so desired. If I had to do that now, exercise wouldn’t be an option for me. It’d be something in the past. As my life’s changed, I’ve found new ways of “favorites” that will better work for my life. But for now, I couldn’t manage without my exercise bands and crockpot.

Chambray
FALL FASHIONOLOGIE
Chambray is another classic piece that’s getting renewed attention as of late. To create a chic style, pair a chambray shirt with a skirt, heels, and a statement necklace. For a relaxed, hip style, pair it with black pants, riding boots, and a colorful scarf.
Joseph
A s the leaves change colors and the air gets a lively dose of chill, the fall
Quiksilver
season brings more than just red Starbucks’ cups and holidays. With the first kiss of a cool breeze on my cheeks, a surge of excitement bursts through my veins. I live for fall fashion. Summer is a demanding boyfriend that insists on unforgiving short shorts, tank tops, and bathing suits. When I’m with Summer, he lets everyone know if I haven’t been going to the gym or when
Cognac boots
I’ve forgotten to use a razor that day. But Fall…he’s a romantic paramour. He wants to cuddle me in cashmere, drape me in layers of plushness, and reassure me that the extra pounds I may have put on mean absolutely nothing. Dramatic, I know. But oh so true! I know I’m not the only one who adores fall fashions. Being able to mix and match so many different things is just fun. The boots, the scarves, the cardigans, the different layers…we’ve got so many options. And to top it all off, fall fashions are usually flab friendly! So whether you like a classic look, a trendy look, or a little of both, let’s take a peek at the different toys we get to play with when the cool winds blow in. First, we need a few classic fall pieces.
Navy Blue Pea Coat Pea coats are quintessential fall must-haves. The thing about the navy blue pea coat is that it’s both classic and trendy. Victoria Beckham, Burberry, and Salvatore Ferragamo all included these pea coats in their 2012 fall runways. An oversized collar, metal detail buttons, and a military-esque style add personality to this older piece.
Cognac boots are my favorite fall staple. They’re versatile enough to be dressed up or down. If you’re having a lazy day, all you need to do is throw them on over skinny jeans with a loose sweater. To dress them up, pair them with tights, a skirt, a button-up, and a cardigan. Whether you want flat boots or heeled boots, find a pair with a bit of detailing. A buckle or some cute wrap-around Pour La Victoire “Marne” straps perfect this look.

Burgundy & Wine Reptile Prints
Black Cardigan
Christian Siriano and Cynthia Rowley both utilized this style in their fall lines. The trick to this print is to find an understated and elegant version of it. Be careful not to go too safari with this one! Think subtle, neutral colors and chic details like this lined collar. Ted Baker
It’s virtually impossible to have too many styles and colors of cardigans, but a well cut black cardigan is a basic closet necessity. Not only does it give a layered look, it also ups the style of just about any outfit, even a simple graphic tee and jeans. It can be thrown over dresses, skirts, jeans, jeggings, etc. It also helps transition summer pieces into fall pieces. Think of it paired with a summer dress, tights, and boots. Voilà!
Jason Wu, Alice + Olivia, and Diane von Furstenberg all poured this color on the runway. Whether it’s a blouse, a jacket, or a skirt, this color is a must. Picture a beautiful merlot…and then dress in it. To make this color pop, find a lush fabric like suede or silk.
Brocade
Marni
Rebecca Taylor
Marchesa stunned with brocade this year. This opulent design is a show stopper and if you find a brocade jacket, you’ve hit the jackpot. For a day look, dress it down with denim and heels. To up the fancy factor, pair it with a solid colored dress. Whether it’s a floral or a geometric print, this subtle metallic shine stands out in a crowd.
Blue & Black Ensemble
Textured Sweaters
Too often, women play it safe with sweaters. This year, look for a sweater with a personality! Play around with different shapes, fits, and fabrics. How about a loose, swing sweater that hangs of your shoulder? Or an open knit, chunky sweater with an interesting pattern design? Find something that draws attention! Now, let’s get into some of the popular trends that this year’s catwalk showcased!
Carven
Another color that owned the fall lines was midnight blue. Head-to-toe blue and black ensembles were a favorite of Carolina Herrera, DKNY, and Marc Jacobs. To stay on point with this one, look for deep blues. To make a designer perfect outfit, pair it with our next trend: leather!

Modcloth
Leather From bomber and biker jackets to leggings, leather is usually a fall fashion staple. And this fall is no different, with leather making appearances at the Rodarte, Derek Lam, and Michael Kors shows. Don’t be intimidated by this style! You don’t have to look like a biker chick to get this right. One of the most versatile and simple ways to nail this look is a pair of faux leather jeggings or pants. Pair them with a graphic print tee, cardigan, and boots for a weekend look. Or dress it up with one of our other trends like a reptile print or midnight blue top.
Lace Appliques Mulberry designs showed us that lace is still a favorite for fall styles. Lace appliques can be found everywhere. In blouses, pops of lace create an interesting design. Look for a top that features lace cutouts rather than an entirely lace piece. For a playful contrast, pair it with leather pants, if you dare. For a romantic date night, pair a lace skirt with a sheer button up.
Lanvin
Embellished Collar
J Brand
Gilded Gold Elie Saab, Rachel Zoe, and Giambattista Valli’s lines all glittered with gold. With dresses that flowed like liquid metal down the catwalk, designers are in love with this lux style. For a more doable way to wear it, look for pieces that incorporate gold without going overboard into “Gaudy Land”. A sweater with gold sparkle is a perfect way to wear this.
Digital Prints On the Issa runway, digital prints were given a fall twist. Rather than bright or neon colors, fall’s digital prints have darker hues to transition this design from summer to fall. And a digital, floral prints is a one-two fashion punch! Phase Eight, Kara Dress
34 | Created Woman October/November 2012
Embellished collars were another sight on the runways this year. Though it’s a small detail, it can take a blouse from simple and dull to elegant and chic. The perfect combo for this style is a sheer lightweight fabric with delicate ornaments that act like icing on the cake. Lastly, here are a few accents and accessories to have to top off all your fall creations.
Zara
Express
Tights Like cardigans, scarves, and shoes, tights are an accessory to buy quite a few of. Play around with colors and patterns as well as degrees of sheerness. With tights, your spring and summer outfits transition to fall fashion seamlessly under dresses and shorts. They also give extra coziness under skirts and tucked into boots.
FASHION TREND| 35
Alexander McQueen
Scarves
Black booties
Linea Pelle “Maya Skinny Belt”
Black booties are a go-to high heel for fall and winter. Unlike regular heels, they don’t leave parts of your foot exposed to the colder weather. Not only can they be worn with tights, they’re also versatile with different cuts of jeans. While skinny jeans and jeggings can easily be tucked into them, they also fit smoothly under boot cuts.
Skinny Belt
Giuseppe Zanotti
J. Crew
With all the different fall layers and hanging fabrics, our figures can get lost in the mix. A skinny belt is the perfect way to cinch in your waist and add another fun detail to your outfit. To update this piece, try a double wrap belt, a la Victoria Beckham. This new twist on the skinny belt just ups the style. River Island Kate Spade “Gramercy”
Bright Statement Necklace If you thought that bright necklaces were only for spring and summer, take a second to reconsider. Worn with a button-up and a nice cardigan or blazer, a bright statement necklace can be just the pop of color a fall outfit may be craving.
36 | Created Woman October/November 2012
Slouchy Beanie Another perk of fall fashion is getting to hide our bad hair days. While big hats and fedoras may be a little too fancy for day to day outfits, a slouchy black beanie is a great alternative. They offer a cool and relaxed vibe while capping off your layered look.
Last but not least, scarves! Not only do they keep you cozy, they’re also just as fun as putting on jewelry. With so many different designs and shapes, you can create different looks with just a few great scarves. Try a floral or exotic print with a plain button-up blouse or chambray shirt. Wrap a cable knit, infinity scarf around yourself for a chunky, casual look. Bottom line, any outfit can be amped up with a well-chosen scarf! As you drool over the designers and their works of art in these photos, remember one thing: great fashion can be done on any kind of budget! Can’t afford that $300 shirt? Don’t worry! The great thing about fashion is that you can do it your way. Forever 21, H&M, and Target often carry these trends at a frugal girl’s price! So, ladies…start your engines and let the fall fashion hunt begin.

The Created Woman The Voice of Color The impassioned first statement of Nicole Marret, founder of Radiant Cosmetics, on the day we met: “I love color! I love playing with makeup! As we chatted, she shared her childhood dream of a loft in New York City and a position as a beauty writer for a fashion magazine. She believed she was on her way when she earned a much coveted internship at Versace. As she trekked around the world, the dream morphed and inflated like a balloon until it could be contained no more and burst into what is now Radiant Cosmetics.

Radiant Cosmetics embody freedom. Their color collections are infused with var ying hues reflecting the extremes of nature, from the warm neutrals of the desert to the vibrant “brights” of the tropical rain forest. These diverse colors offer women the opportunity to express not only their personalities, but their moods. One day a woman may feel like a Hollywood classic and the next, a free-spirited bohemian beauty. Makeup is an expression of how a woman sees herself each day and the rich colors of Radiant Cosmetics can transform a neutral palette into a statement of bold presence. Petite and auburn-haired, with eyes so expressive they give the impression they might jump out of her head, Nicole’s voice rings loud and clear. “To me color means emotion, I think it’s a way to express yourself. I can wear something bright and colorful when I’m feeling loud and something softer when I’m [feeling] subdued.” NO NEUTRAL IN THE WORLD Between college and career, Nicole traveled the world. Unlike the romanticized “backpack across Europe,” plan, she partnered with

World Race. This organization provides structure for individuals willing to be ‘the hands and feet’ of love in some of the darkest corners of the world. Traveling with a team across eleven countries in eleven months, they visited orphanages, hospitals & befriended the lonely in Asia, Africa and Europe. She was introduced to the reality of human trafficking – modern-day slaver y to include forced prostitution. She and her fellow Racers initiated brothel outreach programs through which they entered brothels with one intention: Give Hope to the Hopeless. The United Nations estimates that 27 million people are trafficked annually. Human trafficking has been reported in EVERY STATE in the U.S. Nicole witnessed women desperate for change but without a plan or the resources to change their circumstance. Though her love for fashion hadn’t changed, her dream expanded exponentially. What she saw provided fuel for her insatiable need to “stop talking and start doing.” She combined her passion for cosmetics and her commitment to be a voice for women hidden behind the

curtain. The bold colors of Radiant Cosmetics are a metaphor for the those who come out of darkness and whose lives take on the color of courage, hope and laughter. “Start small when you’re afraid. Make an easy switch. For example, if you normally wear brown or black eyeliner, swap it for purple, or even tr y a green and incorporate it slowly. I think a neutral palette can be great at times, but color is a way to […] play up your features.” COLOR STANDS UP Radiant Cosmetics has an online presence and is sold in stores in Houston, Los Angeles and San Antonio. The website provides information about human trafficking; challenging each visitor to open their eyes to the truth of human trafficking. It invites clients to “stop talking and start doing” by making a purchase. Twenty percent of all sales are dedicated to educate and fight for trafficking victims looking for a way out.
In 2011, Nicole traveled to India and contracted “at-risk” women to create a makeup bag that contained her first set of seasonal shadows inspired by the women of India. This fall she will launch the Uganda Collection. This seasonal set of shadows will be sold in a bag made by Ugandan women who are paid a fair wage. In addition to the cosmetics, each bag includes a stor y – the Voice of the women. “I have visions of creating collections that tell of women from countries all over the world. I dream of socially conscious women traveling on outreaches with me. I want more opportunities to become involved and want to take others with me.” www.redeemedministries.com

Square Earth Studios is owned by the talented duo Maryna Marston and Marco Gutierrez. They bring new life to the photography world. Maryna has been published in Vogue Italia and has won numerous awards for her work. Recently, I had the opportunity to sit down and talk with Maryna, along with her business partner, Marco, about their remarkable photography.
Shown left to right: Maryna Marston, (Model) Bridget Farr, Marco Gutierrez Photo taken courtesy of Nikki Qiao
Q: How did Square Earth Studios start? Mar yna: Marco Gutierrez, my business partner, and I met in photography school in Austin and worked on a couple of projects together. We really got along. He’s ver y technical and shoots more cinematic stories and I like shooting avant-garde. So we were sort of like yin and yang. We realized that ever y time we would partner up together we would win a lot of awards and it just made sense to tr y and start the business together. We talked about it for almost a year. Originally we planned to open a studio and have more than two people. The only problem was that I would go around and ask people and…people were interested but didn’t have the same drive. So I felt like I was the one always pushing and asking questions. I felt like I was doing all the

work. What I really like about Marco is that besides his amazing skills in cinematography and a completely different approach to photography, he is also ver y reliable. It is really hard to find … people that you can trust … I really like working with him for a variety of reasons. So, we work well together. Marco: As Mar yna and I started collaborating on projects we found out instantly that we were feeding off of each other’s creative energy. From there, I guess, we were toying around with the idea of wanting to work together more… We went into competitions together and she was the one that pointed out that it seemed like the pictures we were winning for were the ones that we happened to have collaborated on … It seemed like things were lining up and so we decided to go into business together.
Q: How do these amazing photographers with such dif ferent styles make it work? Mar yna: Marco is super technical and when I have a certain creative vision and I don’t know how to get there and he would get me there on the technical side. He would say that I needed this or that and he would go invent things, sometimes just because I needed that for the shoot. I learn a lot from him, but so does ever yone else who has an opportunity to work with him. Marco: I admit that Mar yna and I are ver y different [Both laugh]. In fact, we seem like a bit of a mismatch. We like to joke about our technology, which would probably be the easiest example. I shoot Nikon. She shoots Canon. I like shooting narratives. She likes shooting abstracts. I have two cats. She has two dogs. She’s married. I’m single. [Both Laugh] It’s totally weird. It really doesn’t make any sense but … this is probably why we work so well together. There are some things that we do share in common. We both love lighting and this is what makes us different from other photographers. Where my skill set needs to expand is where she comes in and the same is true with her. We just keep pushing each other’s creativity and technical abilities.
who’s done that particular work.” I want to extend out from ever yone else … I want to be set in a niche of my own where people would hire me for my talent and my creativity and not just the ability of being able to use a camera. This is my art.
Q: When you have the camera in your hands and you’re getting ready to press the shutter, what are you thinking? Mar yna: I think, for me, when I look through the view finder, I don’t just look through the view finder. I actually look at ever ything else around me … I tend to follow the whole picture … I look at the models’ faces just to see what emotions are portrayed; their body language is ver y important. We have to pay attention to all of the details. Although their styles are ver y different from one another, together they make incredible sense. The work that they do captures a part of the human essence in a way that you would truly have to see to believe. Their art evokes emotion and asks you to think beyond what you see with your eyes engaging your heart and mind.

I f patience is a virtue then call me a wicked woman! I’ve always been focused, determined, and efficient. And I’ve expected ever yone to be just. like. me. I dressed up my lack of patience with words like “passionate” and “intense”, but my passion soon became exhausting. My lack of patience had caused me to get and stay angr y for nonsensical reasons. It began impacting my relationships and work performance. No one wants to be constantly at odds with their loved ones or to see “needs to be more approachable” written on their annual review year after year. With some self-reflection and the news that I was expecting my first child, I realized it was definitely time for a change.
