The True Color Of You
C
olor! It’s a word that used to scare me. Spending days endlessly shopping for bright pieces that never saw the outside of my closet, I tried to add variety, flare, and color to my basic black and white wardrobe. For a classic girl like me, it’s a word that means getting out of my comfort zone. I remember the day when my husband, whose closet is lined with shades of pink, blue, and turquoise button-up shirts, asked me to wear more color. Being a good wife and trying to spice up date night dresses, I tried to incorporate vibrant colors, only to revert back to my basic black, sexy dresses that I liked. Now, fast forward a few years; the word color doesn’t scare me as much. I’ve realized I don’t have to have all the colors. I can just find one or two of the current season’s trends that I like and incorporate those colors with my basic black. Simple! Happy wife, happy husband! Spring 2013 fashion burst with color and took the runway by storm. From vibrant reds and greens to soft violets and blues, color found new ways to show itself in the form of make-up, new must-have accessories, and nail art (Girl on The Street: Color Me This pg. 12, Spring Hair & Makeup pg. 42, Nailed It pg. 57). For me, the choice is easy; emerald green and vibrant red will be my color additions this season. Colors that embrace my personality and still enable me to walk with confidence, as I am comfortable in my own skin and in the clothes that adorn me. Isn’t that what it’s all about anyway? Not making sure we fill our closets with all the latest trends, but filling our closets with trends and colors that reflect who we are. It’s about embracing our very own essence.

This issue marked many firsts for us at Created Woman. It’s by far our largest issue yet, but in the planning and execution, each team member found their groove and ran in their lane, so to speak. We created, brainstormed, and planned together as a team, utilizing individual strengths. Our stylist didn’t try to be the photographer; our hair stylist didn’t try to be the graphic designer. As a team, we embraced our natural gifts and let the others embrace theirs. Simple, yet hardly ever done! The result? A magazine filled with examples of women embracing their natural selves and sharing their gifts with the world.
that when we just do what we were created to do, we’re going green by simply being true to who we are. No imitations. No plastics. Just real, raw, and natural. It’s the basics of going green. We must be real, first; otherwise, there’s no reward to us or anyone else. Life just becomes a scary landfill. (Inside/Out pg. 104) So once again, being true to who we are, we encourage you to be who you were created to be. The real, natural, beautiful you!
Heather Frierson
With the double theme of “Spring Fashion” and “Going Green”, we certainly had our work cut out for us on how to incorporate such diverse subjects. But in the end, we realized

Nichole’s eye makeup features a rainbow of colors, including green, a hit shade this spring. Green is the Pantone Color for 2013 and, as you can see on Nichole, it is flattering and wearable when paired with soft pinks and earth tone colors.
Our model, Brandi, is wearing soft pastel makeup shades with bold false lashes. Pastel colors are always perfect for spring, however, the addition of lush lashes is a great trend that makes this spring look fun and unpredictable.
Kamaria’s makeup draws attention to the bold rich color of red lips. Fashion shows like Prada and Burberry carried this red trend in many hues on the runway. Our model, Kamaria, is wearing an orange-red shade, a slight departure from the classic red look, though just as gorgeous.
Danielle’s makeup is a plum/purple eye shadow look with a nude lip. The focus on eyes has been a big trend at fashion weeks. This look demonstrates that women of color can pull off jewel-toned shades beautifully.
Side parts give the feeling of old Hollywood starlets.
Naturally textured curls are beautiful. If you’ve got them, flaunt them.

Shine on! How tempting is it to try something new every time you go to the nail salon? Don’t wait any longer. Be a risk taker and doll your nails up with an ultra-shiny metallic. You’ll be sure to turn heads. This trend is sleek and chic. Mix it up by painting your nails metallic and using a neutral color for the rest to give some contrast.
In the end, your nail style is up to you. You can be as creative as you want or keep it simple. As long as this latest accessory expresses and reflects who you are, trust me, you’ll be sure to always be in style.

What the everyday girl can take from the runway to the streets
Melissa Shea, is a lover of fashion and a woman who is living out who she was Created to be by bringing fashion to the everyday girl. The Creative Director of FashionMingle. net, a network for fashion entrepreneurs to share, discover, and mingle, took time to give us a peak behind the curtain of New York Fashion Week and life of a fashion trailblazer.
FASHION FEATURE I love fashion because it is an ar t form “ that is accessible by ever yone. It can make you happy and feel more confidant in yourself and adds beauty to the world.” Melissa Shea
CW: At Fashion week, what are some trends you saw stand out the most – colors, shapes, fabric, etc
CW: For the everyday woman, how can we incorporate high fashion looks into our everyday life?
MELISSA: Rachel Zoe has a great collection for spring. Her collection is perfect for the casual, hip Austin lifestyle. Tapered pants and jackets in bold colors were a predominant look in her collection.
MELISSA: I think it’s important to identify what the trending colors are for ever y season and use them to accessorize your day-to-day wardrobe. Getting a handbag or bangles with the hot new color is a way to stay trendy without ending up with a closet full of clothes that look dated in a year.
Vera Wang showed a lot of white with embroidered details in her spring collection. Having a few high quality, classic white pieces in your wardrobe is a great way to update each spring with the newest color trend. Just add a colorful scarf or shoe and you’ve got a completely new look. Nanette Lepore featured a lot of summer dresses with flared skirts in her collection. I love this style for an Austin spring and summer. It’s cool and breezy and can be worn on any figure.
CW: How do you think this years spring trends from the runway will translate to the street? MELISSA: A “pop of color” is the must-have fashion statement. Whether it’s a handbag, belt, shoe, or bangle, you must have a pop of color for spring. Oranges, greens, and teals will be ever ywhere.

CW: Tell us about your team that attended this year’s fashion week, what they learned and what they did at fashion week? MELISSA: One of my favorite things about what I do is providing talented people the chance to cover New York Fashion Week as a member of the press. We were fortunate to send Marco Gutierrez and Mar yna Marston of Austin-based Square Earth Studio to cover the Spring 2013 Collections last September. Marco and Mar yna did an amazing job covering all the shows. Their photography and videography skills are exceptional and our content for spring trend coverage is gorgeous.

Vera Wang
“ Fashion Week is an exciting experience as well as hard work. There are multiple fashion shows going on at the same time and you have to pick wisely to preserve your energy since you have 7 days jam-packed with amazing shows from dusk till night. I learned that even when fashion isn’t glamorous work, it still does bring me joy and I wouldn’t trade the experience for anything.” Maryna Marston, Square Ear th Studio Photography CW: How did FashionMingle.net Begin? MELISSA: FashionMingle.net was born out of a desire to use my web development and marketing background to help small fashion businesses get exposure. Creative people often lack the technical and marketing skills they needed to promote their business effectively, so I set out to create a platform where fashion-related businesses could easily promote their products and ser vices through our fashion director y, social network, and member blog.
CW: For the girl who wants to get into the fashion world at NYC, what’s your best advice? MELISSA: My advice for girls who want to be successful in the fashion industr y is to be willing to wear a lot of hats. You must be a good writer - those skills are needed at ever y turn. You must understand social media and understand how to promote yourself and the business you’re working for. It’s critical that you have a portfolio of work, a network of contacts, and a reputation as a hard worker. So be prepared to start out working as an intern or volunteer, because there is no other way to get those three things without “paying your dues”.
About Author: Melissa Shea www.FashionMingle.net facebook/twitter.com/@FashionMingle Favorite Trend: “This spring the top color trend is Emerald Green, which I am thrilled about because I’m a red head and that is a great color on me.” Melissa Shea is the Creative Director of FashionMingle.net and a veteran member of the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Press Corp. Melissa enjoys meeting talented, creative people in the fashion industry and working with them to bring exposure to their business.

The Created Woman
Beyond First Love
THE CREATED WOMAN “ I dreamed of being a professional ballerina, even though no woman in my family was taller than 5’2”.” “Thoughts of him caused me to lose my rational thinking.” “ I felt giddy and was always thinking of my future.” “My first love filtered every action and decision of my youth.”
W
hat was your first love? Was it the curly-haired stud muffin that lived next door to your grandmother when you were in the second grade? Was it the dream of living deep in the woods, connected to the sounds and smells of nature? Perhaps you aspired to be the First Lady or even the first female President of the United States? First Love captures a young girl’s innocence and holds her heart hostage. She’s (First Love) an intimate friend because she knows ever ything about us. She encourages us to dream without reser vation and whispers in our ear, “The world belongs to you!” First Love points us into our future until the day she walks away; because the truth is, First Love is rarely our ONLY Love. She’s rarely gentle when she leaves. Girls moving toward womanhood are left stranded in the middle of nowhere with seemingly unanswerable questions: “Do I trust again? Should I stop dreaming altogether? Where do I go from here?”
I dreamed of being a vet because I love animals but I ended up becoming a journalist. My first article about an animal issue was titled Running for Their Lives, and in the 1980s was one of the first exposés on the horror of greyhound racing. My first book, Stolen for Profit, broke the story of pets being stolen for medical research and prompted Congressional action.By advocating for animals in this way, my dream was still fulfilled. Jude Reitman, founder of La Bedouine
Fulltime Life Jude also dreamed of being an actress. She never intended to be a journalist but her voice had to be heard. Writing became the birthing canal through which her curiosity and passion made their way into the world. She is an award-winning investigative journalist, whose work has been highlighted in multiple media forms, including NPR Radio, LA Times, Chicago Sun Times, Connie Chung’s Eye to Eye and Dateline. Though she never intended to write, her pen (or keyboard) also made a place for her as a faculty member at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Here, she taught in the School of Journalism, where her natural curiosity opened diverse doors of opportunity. During her initial years in North Carolina, Jude became involved with women from the Raleigh Women’s Prison. She offered a “Writer’s Workshop” and realized the women, who were ser ving time for anything from fraud to murder, had a need to tell their stories. She subsequently founded The North Carolina Women’s Prison Writing and Performance Project - a reparator y company
that performed their original works in schools and theatres for five years. The inmates’ lives were transformed as they shared their stories, and in exchange, their audiences were given a glimpse of lives so ver y often misunderstood. She gave these women a vehicle for healing.
“ I don’t think life is linear. It moves in different ways at different times, driven by what inspires you.” Rather than think of life’s changes as transitions, she prefers the term “transformation”. In the middle of one her transformational seasons, Jude met her husband. Do you remember the movie Notting Hill? An English book store owner (Hugh Grant) and an American actress (Julia Roberts) meet when she wanders into his shop in search of a book. Well, Jude’s marriage to a French chef began something like that. She moved to France to write her first novel and in a medieval village baker y she had a chance meeting with the man who would become her

“No love, no friendship can cross the path of our destiny without leaving some mark on it forever.” Francois Mauriac new love. This encounter added dimension when they married and she began her life as an intercontinental resident, living both in the US and Europe. Where hoards of people wait for adventure to find them, Jude’s philosophy is “Find something that engages you, and adventure and experience will follow.” Her life continuously morphs from one love to another. She gains experience from the love of one adventure and carries it to the next. She models the philosophy of fluidity. She adapts, reshapes, and restructures. Life is Exploration While life in provincial France sounds romantic, ever y silver lining has its cloud. The cold, dr y winds of Southern France dried out Jude’s skin. No product she tried either moisturized it or returned any suppleness to it. One day, she received a bottle of Argan Oil as a gift from a Moroccan woman. The
woman shared that it was an ancient miracle for the skin. After three days, Jude’s skin was changed and she was motivated to find the source of this magic in a bottle. Within a short period of time, she traveled to Morocco. Her intention was to obtain products for her friends and friends. Instead, she discovered an ancient culture of Berber women who grind the Argan nut to make the miracle working oil that was transforming her skin. As a lover of people and new knowledge, Jude began to develop relationships with families whose livelihood depended on Argan Oil for generations and her future took a turn. “I had no intention of starting a skin care company, but my interests brought me along this path. I met people along the way who encouraged and supported me, and suddenly I find that I have a company that began with a gift of a bottle of Argan Oil! “
Engage, Engage, ENGAGE • She gave her talent (as a writer) a place to develop when she moved to France. • She allowed her curiosity to have its questions answered when she traveled to Morocco to find the source of Argan Oil. • She made room in her heart and allowed the faces and stories of Berber women - as well as the women in the Raleigh Women’s prison - to leave an imprint on her heart. • She permitted her life to snowball by contracting Berber women to har vest Argan nuts and make handmade Argan Oil to sell in the US. • She founded La Bedouine, a skin care company that: • employs indigenous women with a fair wage in Morocco. • offers a line of skin care products whose foundation is Argan Oil, a beauty treatment that is centuries old. • donates a portion of her profits to non-profit organizations, including the Moroccan Primate Foundation which works to stop trafficking primates. (With this, she’s come full circle to her childhood dream of studying Veterinar y Medicine.)
Beyond First Love Jude didn’t become a veterinarian or an actress, as she dreamed of when she was a child. I, for one, am glad. She is a conduit connecting women and cultures across the globe, cultivating new relationships and partnerships, and personifying women helping women. Her journey is proof positive that unfulfilled aspirations don’t have to taint our vision of the future. Childhood dreams and loves become our ser vants, not our masters. They are practice laps for the marathons women run. First Love exposes us to unreser ved imagination and her absence leads us to maturity.

WELL WOMAN
Eat Real Food to Maintain Weight and Life Balance
THE WELL WOMAN
Q
uick Weight Loss”, “Lose all Your Weight in 21 days”, “Celebrity Diet”…..These are just a few of the marketing campaigns I’ve read in the last couple of days. I can’t begin to name all the ones I’ve read over the years. It saddens me to see so many women chasing all the gimmicks in hopes of finding that perfect “quick fix” to look and feel better. We’re bombarded around every corner with new advertising for new diets, the latest eating programs, and a “better, healthier” food. To be honest, it’s exhausting and overwhelming to keep up with, and I’m in the business. Many years ago, I realized I needed a quick answer to give to those who are desperate to know if the latest diet, supplements, or new method of losing weight would work. My answer would always leave one to ponder, “Can you do it for the rest of your life?” I’ve yet to meet anyone who can function or sustain for a long period of time a very restrictive calorie diet, a meal plan that includes the same foods or shakes for breakfast, lunch, and
dinner, or a hefty fee each month for specially packaged foods that you can only get from the vendor. These things will no doubt bring initial weight loss, but the weight will quickly return once you can no longer manage the special program. Then the cycle begins once again. The only way to lose and maintain a healthy weight, have balance in your life, and be at peace with food is to give up on all of this nonsense. Take the time to learn how to eat real healthy food with a balanced diet that includes an exercise program. Calories In/Calories Out While we don’t want to restrict ourselves with a very low amount of calories each day, we all have a healthy amount of calories that are needed to lose or maintain a healthy weight. There must be a deficit between the number of calories we eat and the amount of calories we burn. It’s simple math done by incorporating a healthy amount of exercise with a healthy amount of food.
Add Super Foods
Creamy Peanut Butter Dip 5.3 ounce container of nonfat Yoplait Greek vanilla yogurt 2 tbsp peanut butter 1/2 tbsp honey This makes four 2 tbsp servings at 70 calories per serving. Double it for a healthy appetizer or sweet treat at your next social gathering.
Add vs Subtract Most women try to eat healthy by concentrating on what they should NOT eat, which can lead to deprivation and failure. Instead of thinking of what you can’t eat, focus on what real foods you should eat and fill your meals and snacks around them. For example, focus on the healthy plate plan. When you sit down to eat, plan your plate to be one-fourth healthy protein, one-fourth healthy grain, and the other half filled with fruits and vegetables. By putting your effort and thoughts into what needs to be added to your diet instead of those things that need to be subtracted, it leaves little room to dwell on things you can’t have. You become full and satisfied with an occasional cookie, cake, or “not so healthy” treat.
Super foods are those “real” foods that are closest to their natural state and provide an abundance of nutrients such as plenty of fiber and protein. To maintain a healthy weight, we want natural food that’ll keep us full and satisfied. There are many, but a few of my favorites when planning meals are salmon, tomatoes, eggs, beans, sweet potatoes, and spinach. For my snacks, I love to see how many different fruits I can add each day along with cheese, almonds, and raw vegetables. I don’t know about you, but I want to enjoy life and eat like a real person. There’s no peace or balance in life when continually chasing the latest diet fads. There’s no quick solution. It’s not rocket science. It’s learning how to eat real food that God gave us from the beginning of time. That’s how to maintain a healthy weight, peace, and balance in the life of any woman.

About Author: Kala S. Dillie Favorite Trend: “I love all the black and white on the runways this season. It kind of reminds me of the horse race scene during My Fair Lady.” Kala has been working in the retail industry for the past 15 years and is currently transitioning into the San Francisco Bay area with her husband, Eric, and daughter, Ava. In her spare time, she enjoys cooking and watching teeny bopper shows on the CW, although she would never admit it in person. NEVER!
