Condenser Microphone

Description The AKG Model C 1000 S gradient condenser microphone uses a low noise pre-polarized backplate (electret) and is ideal for a variety of recording and sound reinforcement applications. Its polar pattern can be quickly converted from cardioid to hypercardioid by placing an acoustical converter over the end of the microphone capsule; this has virtually no effect on the on-axis response of the microphone. The onaxis response of the C 1000 S has a gentle (-6 db/octave) roll-off below 200 Hz which has been tailored for the normal close-in use of cardioid and hypercardioid microphones in studio recording and sound reinforcement applications. The microphone may thus be used in close-in application with no need for further equalization. The C 1000 S may be powered by a 9-volt battery or by phantom powering over a range from 9 to 52 Vdc. The included PPC 1000 Polar Pattern Converter allows quick changeover from cardioid to hypercardioid. A silent on/off switch is recessed to prevent inadvertent shut-off. The included Presence Boost Adapter piece PB 1000 creates an emphasis of the higher frequencies from 5 to 9 kHz by about 3 to 5 dB, which not only improves the transmission of sibilances but may be also advantageous when recording instruments requiring greater high frequency content in their audio spectrum.

Architects and Engineers Specifications The microphone shall be a gradient condenser type with a cardioid polar pattern along its cylindrical axis. An acoustical adapter shall be provided which converts the polar pattern to hypercardioid. The microphone shall be no larger in diameter than 1.3 in. (39 mm), and the finish shall be matte. On-axis frequency response shall be maintained +4 dB within the range of 200 Hz to 20 kHz, as measured at 1 meter. Below 200 Hz the response,

measured at 1 meter, shall diminish 6 dB/octave. Sensitivity shall be at least 6 mV/Pa, and the A-weighted noise level of the microphone shall be no higher than 20 dB. The microphone shall operate in a sound field of 137 dB with no greater than 1.0 % THD. The microphone shall operate with a 9 volt battery or with phantom powering, over the nominal standard limits of 9 to 52 Vdc. The microphone shall be the AKG Acoustics Model C 1000 S.

SE Electronics Mic Techniques and Applications Ribbon Microphones

Ribbon microphones have a natural figure-of-eight polar response, so where a more controlled directivity is required, we recommend using an sE Reflexion FilterTM behind the microphone. Their unique character enhances the interesting mid-range resonances in an instrument while smoothing out the highs, making them ideal for sweetening bowed strings or as drum overheads where you need to prevent the cymbals from becoming too splashy. They are also used by many leading engineers for recording guitar amplifiers as they retain the bite and character of the sound, while filtering out some of the less desirable high-end harmonics. Passive ribbon models have a naturally low output and so should be used in conjunction with a good quality, low noise preamplifier. Though other manufacturers may provide suggested lists of instruments for use with their ribbon models, we would recommend you try our ribbon models on as many sources you can (other than perhaps closemicâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ed drums), as they often reveal a surprising and musically valid alternative to the more obvious microphone choices. Use a pop shield if using them to record vocals and shield the rear of the mic using a Reflexion Filter or other suitable acoustic absorber. !

Overload Warning

Five polar patterns The twin-diaphragm system gives you a choice of five different polar patterns (omnidirectional, wide cardioid, cardioid, hypercardioid, and figure eight). The diaphragm is made from a special gold-sputtered plastic foil and the gold layer is deposited on the diaphragm only on the outer sides to prevent short circuiting to the back plate if strong blasts of air are applied.

In developing the new models, we have carefully maintained the sonic character and traditional shape of the C 414 series, while integrating new features like a vastly improved capsule shock mount, new switching functions and more modern design – into the classic shape of the previous models.

The new XLS and XL II models were developed to give professional users improved functionality they need: control switches with status LED for selecting the polar pattern, pre-attenuation pad and bass cut/roll-off. An overload indicator function, status indicators and positioning aid have been integrated into the microphone too. An optional remote control device to switch all these functions at the mixer will be available by the end of 2004.

Three switchable pre-attenuation levels Pre-attenuation levels are controlled by changes in the polarization voltage of the capsule and permit increases of 6, 12 or 18 dB in the maximum sound pressure level for close-up recording or for use on high output sources.
