Clean Goole Campaign Group organises clean-up project in memory of Captain Tom

Back in September 2020 Graham Toft and Rebecca Watkins set up the Clean Goole Campaign Group after seeing lots of criticism about litter in the area

The group has recently organised a clear-up project named Captain Tom 100 Bag Challenge. The aim was to fill 100 bin bags with litter and get as many people in the community to take part.

The event wanted to embody the spirit and determination of captain Tom who inspired and helped us all through those difficult months. Captain Tom proved that anyone could take on a challenge and make a difference. The event was a huge success just like Captain Tom’s 100 laps of his garden. Angela Wilson comments on how “It was wonderful to see so many people getting together to celebrate Captain Tom’s fundraising spirit as well as giving something back to the community.” Old Goole Community centre also thought a litter pick would be a good idea so Clean Goole Campaign Group volunteered to run one for them Sunday 16th May. Regular volunteers from the Clean Goole Campaign Group were also joined by some of the members

of the Old Goole Community Group. Goole’s newly elected Mayor, Chris Bailey, has also been a volunteer of the group for quite a while and has now joined the admin team. The group has gone from strength to strength with lots of new members and volunteers getting involved, and when new admin member Angela Wilson set up a Go Fund Me Page in March to get some donations to buy the group some high-vis vests, the amount of donations received was more than they ever expected. The group wants to run litter picks in the Goole area on a regular basis on weekends and also during the week. Now they want more volunteers to get involved and give a few hours up every now and again to join them.

It’s a great way for the brain to switch off and relax and some members have said they find it rewarding and therapeutic. They advertise the litter picks on social media. The Steam Packet and Old Goole Club have also supported the group by providing refreshments following recent litter picks as well as donations from Morrisons of bags, gloves and Easter eggs for the younger volunteers that were on the litter pick on Easter Saturday. Angela added: “It’s great to see the community coming together with one aim and that is to make our town and the surrounding area a clean and tidy place for its residents, businesses and its visitors.”
