FROM A POLICE PERSPECTIVE: Continuing to tackle youth crime in Goole

Where we have reports of the teenagers causing a disruption, behaving antisocially or committing low level offences, such as shop theft, we do everything we can to help these young people choose a more positive path.

Last month, my column focussed on how we are working closely with Goole Youth Action to increase opportunities for young people in the area.

I want to make it really clear, though, that despite what has been rumoured on social media, we do not have an issue with ‘gangs’ here in Goole.

What we do have, on occasion, is groups of teenagers gathering around the main shopping areas which we know can be intimidating for people using the shops. I want to offer my reassurance that we are continuing to work hard to make sure that Goole continues to feel safe for its residents. Whilst we will always consider options that help young people learn and make better choices in life, when it’s necessary and appropriate we do seek prosecution.

One of the local PCSOs, Sam Chandler, has been working as the local East Riding of Yorkshire Council ASB officer. A room has been made available in the Bell and Crown pub to provide a regular Youth Hub.

These types of initiatives give kids something to do, keeps them out of trouble and helps them make friends and build relationships with the local community too. The Youth Hub is in the very early stages but it’s hoped it will be a success.

The local neighbourhood team can regularly be seen out and about around the town, anyone with information or concerns can talk to them.

You can report information by calling our non-emergency 101 line or via the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
