Creation Festival Speaker Spotlight

Pastor Harry

will be speaking at Creation Northeast, Saturday June 30 & Creation Northwest, Thursday July 21

PASTOR HARRY THOMAS Creation Founder and Speaker It was back in 1971 when I was driving through New York City that I felt compelled to pull over to the side of the road and pray. When I did so, I had a split-second vision of thousands of young people sitting on a hillside. I did not know what this meant, but I knew that the Lord was calling me to reach young people with the gospel. But how should I go about this calling? For those old enough, you may remember the “Jesus movement.” Out of that moment came a great deal of music from the guitars and vocals of converted “hippies.” I had a burning desire to share this “Jesus Rock Music” with young people across the nation. The Lord directed me to start “The Come Alive Show” which eventually was picked up by CBS (Phila. & NYC) and about 50 other radio stations. One night after a concert, along with my wife, Margery and Tim Landis we prayerfully made a decision to launch the Creation Festival. By God’s grace, the first Creation Festival was held in June of 1979, at

Muddy Run Park in Quarryville, PA. About 5000 people came that year and people loved the festival as we came to “Give Tribute To Our Creator.”

Tents have always played a big part in my life. My grandfather, Harry Thomas, was a Lutheran tent evangelist. When I was a teenager I went down the sawdust trail in a tent meeting to give my heart and my life to Jesus Christ. At the Creation Festival, we have a lot of tents where seminars and children’s ministries and concessions all are housed. The hillsides are loaded with tens of thousands of people camping in their tents. And we pray that every person in every tent will leave Creation knowing Jesus Christ as Lord.

Our intention is to allow the Gospel and the Word of God to be front and center. We have great speakers, seminars and an evangelistic message every evening. Music can be such a vital part of reaching young people for Christ especially in a live performance. When people hear the heart of the artist and his or her passion for Christ this can be a powerful life-changing message to the hearer. That split-second vision in 1971 of thousands of young people on a Creation is about life-changing deci- hillside has become a reality. Now, sions. A teenager may feel alone at more than ever, I believe God wants school but when they look around at to use Creation to reach generations Creation he realizes he is not alone, with the Good News! Pray with us for in fact, there are thousands of young Creation 2012 and attend. Creation people who love and worship Christ. may be “the highlight of your sumWhen my grandson was baptized at mer...and maybe your life.” Creation, he said “Papa, when I was baptized that’s when I knew I sealed the deal between Jesus and me.” For More on Pastor Harry: Justin has something to point back www.comealive.com to that was life changing and it hapwww.creationfest.com pened at Creation.

ormer Korn guitarist Brian Head Welch marks a new beginning with the announcement that his band will now go by the name Love & Death. “I put this band to-gether in 2009” states Welch. “Since then, we’ve experienced some very intense highs and lows. Michael Valentine, Dan Johnson, J.R. Bareis and myself have toured around the world playing a lot of killer shows, but we’ve also had some heart shattering difficulties along the way as well. To us, the name “Love and Death” symbolizes everything we’ve been through as a band over the last few years. We love this band so much and we’ll go through hell to connect with our fans. We’ve proven that to ourselves over and over again.”

With Love & Death, the music now lives under it’s own banner. “Many people have confused my speaking dates and our band dates because they were both being booked as Brian Head Welch” says Welch. “I have wanted to use a band name for branding my music for a few years. It has been an ongoing discussion with my management, but we were just starting to tour and I was in the middle of supporting my third book and it seemed like a bad time to switch names. Now with the new music coming out, its time to really separate the things I do. I want the music to be about music. I will still be doing public speaking under Brian Head Welch. I am happy that all the confusion will be over.”

The band formed when Welch decided to have open auditions on YouTube in 2009. “I picked the guys and then had a jam session in Phoenix” says Welch. “Over the last couple of years, there have been a few line up changes as we went through normal growing pains. The current band has been together and touring for a while now and they are a big part of the new music and the future of LOVE & DEATH.” Along with the new band name, Love and Death’s first official music project will be released on April 24th. The first single “Chemicals” will be released sometime in March, along with an intense semi-animated music video shot by POAB Designs/Martillo Pictures.

The band’s latest single “Paralyzed” is already #5 on the BDS rock chart (the single was re-leased under the name Brian Head Welch). “Paralyzed” was produced by Jason Rauch (Red, Breaking Benjamin) and mixed by Lee Bridges (Third Day, Newsboys).

We hear from Jeff Frankenstein about the unique Daniel Bashta penned worship song. God’s Not Dead by Newsboys showcases the best music yet from front man Michael Tait and bandmates Jeff Frankenstein (keys), Duncan Phillips (drums), and Jody Davis (guitars), as the project offers today’s most embraced modern worship anthems. At the album’s core, the hit worship song “God’s Not Dead (Like A Lion)” sings of victory over a century’s worth of philosophers who thought otherwise. Friedrich Nietzsche once proclaimed, “God is dead.” But as Newsboys’ friend and pastor Rice Brooks likes to say, “A funny thing happened on the way to the funeral.” The belief that God is indeed alive is the truth Newsboys are amplifying. “God’s not dead, let’s worship Him,” says Michael Tait. “We serve a living God!” Tait’s outspoken message is carried by Newsboys’ signature sound that Frankenstein, Phillips, and Davis have shaped together for nearly two decades now.

“This new record has come together like no other Newsboys record in the past,” says Andrew Patton, General Manager of Inpop Records. “They chose outstanding songs that not only showcase the band in a familiar and fresh way, but also are simply core worship songs and messages that the worldwide church can embrace today. This album is the perfect extension of the growth experienced from Born Again.” Their mission is surely accomplished on “God’s Not Dead (Like A Lion),” which reunites Tait with Kevin Max, both formerly part of the multi-platinum trio dc Talk. Written by Daniel Bashta, it sings: “Come shake the ground with the sounds of revival.” And hearing two friends sing together again after many years apart does bring an air of renewal. I had the great opportunity to interview Newsboys’ keyboardist Jeff Frankenstein about hit single “God’s Not Dead (Like A Lion).”

Please describe the story behind the band recording the song “God’s Not Dead.” I’m not sure officially how everyone in the band first heard the song, but last summer we were at a festival and our manager was talking about songs we could record for our upcoming worship album . He handed me an unlabeled CD which had sixteen songs on it. There were no song titles or artist names listed. I spent the day listening through the album, and I had never heard Daniel Bashta’s song “Like A Lion” before. It stood out to me as fresh and unique and I loved his voice. I just loved the song. We all felt like we could record a cool version of the song by our band. It all started tying together the concept of what we wanted to say on this album. The campaign of what we wanted to bring out in the next

shouted, the voices of the seven thunders spoke. And when the seven thunders spoke, I was about to write; but I heard a voice from heaven say, ‘Seal up what the seven thunders have said and do not write it down.’”

Which Bible verses connect with the message of the song?

How can listeners apply that message when they listen to the song?

Hosea 11:10: “They will follow the LORD; He will roar like a lion. When He roars, His children will come trembling from the west.”

It seems like culturally that atheism has become more and more prevalent. God is being taken out of so much of our culture and has been for years. People are just deceived. There’s a lack of Truth and in some Christian music circles and in Christians in general, there’s a lack of boldness. That’s what sticks out to me is the bold message of this song. What’s most disheartening for me is that even in Christian music there are so many songs that don’t proclaim the Name of Jesus. A lot of us say great things that may coincide with biblical principles and social justice, and I don’t know about

… John 14:19: “Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live.” ...and Revelation 10:2-4: “He was holding a little scroll, which lay open in his hand. He planted his right foot on the sea and his left foot on the land, and he gave a loud shout like the roar of a lion. When he

you, but the boldness of this song is what attracts me. As artists we have an impact on people and culture. To me, that’s why this song is resonating with people. We can tell based on the reaction at our concerts to the song that people are embracing the message of the song and that it is saying what they feel. I know that every band has niches, for us, this is a Newsboys message. I’m preaching to myself when I say those words in this song. The Gospel turns the world upside down. We need to live as Christians with God’s upside down expectations that defy the world’s expectations. The songs that we made as newsboys and dcTalk in the 1990s had bold Christian messages and we set out to make an album with songs that had those type of messages. umping, clapping, singing, laughing; a Donut Man concert grabs children right where they are with a wonderful blend of Bible songs, stories and lots of audience participation. Rob Evans, The Donut Man, presents the Gospel in a way that introduces young children and their families to the basic elements of the Christian faith and gives them lots to talk about when they get home ‘cause the concert is exciting! Children are brought from out of the audience to help the Donut Man tell his stories and to do the hand motions that go with the songs. Even

Duncan the Talking Donut pops out of his bakery box to sing a “whole” song. A Donut Man concert is a great place for young families to sow seeds of Biblical values into their lives. Values that Rob has cultivated with his wife and their six children(and now 7 grandchildren). It works. This is “fun that redeems”. See you there! Demon Hunter will be playing at

Creation Northeast’s HM Stage this year. Demon Hunter feature

REPRINTED FROM HM MAGAzINE

The clock isTic There is sTill wo AS EACH DAY PASSES BY, WE SEE THIS WORLD ROTTING MORE AND MORE. SICkNESS AND POVERTY ARE SPREADING AT AN INCREASING RATE AND PEOPLE ARE DYING. MANY ARE LOSING HOPE AND FAITHTOTHE FIGURETHAT ONCE WALkED THIS EARTH CASTING OUT DEMONS AND HEALING THE SICk. NOW IS NOT THE TIME OF LETTING GO. NOW IS THE TIME OF REFORMATION.

In these dark times, Demon Hunter stands out with a bright light held high. The band has been known for their addicting heavy sound with melodic choruses and in-your-face, honest-to-goodness lyrics. Their music has touched a wide number of people as evidenced by their symbol being seen as a sign of unity. Many fans have this symbol as a part of their personal lives through tattoos and the visual arts. As a band they have always been mysterious in what to expect. Before anyone knew who the band was, Solid State in 2002 only advertised the band by showing the goat head symbol with their first album release date below it. This simple act left consumers itching to know what was about to come. Since then the band has become a way of life rather than just another selection on someone’s mp3 playlist. Demon Hunter will be releasing their fifth studio album, named The World Is A Thorn. It will be available March 9th in stores and for digital download. The album is produced by longtime friend and producer of Tooth & Nail, Aaron Sprinkle (Acceptance, Anberlin, The Almost) and mixed by Jason Suecof (August Burns Red, The Black Dahlia Murder, Job for a Cowboy). In a press release the band stated what the name of the new album means. With the current state of how the world is, they believe it was necessary to elaborate on it. Through their eyes, they see the world being harmful and destructive. Lyrically the album will focus on what they have always done. “With true life issues in this world, at large I grab them and put my personal viewpoints on them. This can range from science to politics,” says lead vocalist Ryan Clark, explaining the new album. “More and more this world is losing its morals and values. The album will be about (how) less and less things (are) being held in a sacred manner. Also it will mention how we disagree with the modern way of thinking.” In any given situation we are called upon to show action when a conflict is understood. As Christians we are called to pray for others, especially those who have not recognized the call of the Lord. The album’s first single will be the song “Collapsing,” which talks about continuing the battle of winning souls no matter how hardened hearts may be.

The World Is A Thorn is promised to be the heaviest release yet by the group. Even though this was said about their fourth release, Storm The

Gates Of Hell, the bar has been raised to a whole new level. Clark believes this was the right direction to take the band, because naturally it is what they do best. “It all came out naturally when I started writing. I took an approach where I wasn’t going to hold anything back,” Clark comments on the writing process. “Most of the demo tracks became much faster as I pushed along. There is a classic thrash element to the record. Everyone will see an obvious boost to the intensity of it.”

Storm The Gates Of Hell delivered on its promises of being aggressive, while at the same time throwing in a number of surprises. Clark’s vocals stepped up a notch with higher screams, which had never been done before. The World Is A Thorn will be growing more in the case of vocal power. “Vocally it’s going to be an expansion on what I’ve been doing on the last couple of records,” Clark says. “Choruses will contain parts between screaming and singing. The singing parts are a little grittier with some edge added to it. You will tell it was pushed a little bit higher. As for the screaming stuff, it comes out naturally after years of trying to make my voice sound a certain way. I’ve come to a point where I am comfortable doing it without hearing something in my head and contemplating it. It’s more of a natural sound.” The vibe of the album will be similar to their first self-titled release. Unlike the ballads on StormThe Gates Of Hell and their third album, TheTriptych, this new album will have a couple of ballads that won’t sound too pop-like. They will be more dark and moody, but not to the point of being depressing. For their single “Collapsing,” it introduces itself with a steady computerized beat sound effect, just like the ones used on Summer Of Darkness. The guitars deliver a palm-muted thrash rhythm during the verses with whammy bar-like screams in the background. You might catch yourself head nodding to the easy-to-singalong-to chorus. Another reason the band went forward with a heavier sound is completely because it is what they like to hear. When starting fresh in the heavy music scene, Clark was involved with Focal Point and Training for Utopia, which was known as noisecore.

We realize that while you love the outdoors, you also might not have the equipment or the ability to haul everything. To offer a solution to this dilemma, full size, roomy safari style tents will be set up on-site and available for rent for the duration of the festival. Tents are heavy-duty, with plenty of headroom and can sleep a maximum of six people. Two cots are included for this price. Additional cots are available for $20 each (six cots max per tent). This is a great opportunity for families, youth groups and churches. Rental fees for tents are only $280 for the week of the festival.

by Kevin Davis

Kevin Davis speaks with Elias Dummer from The CIty Harmonic, to discover what Martin Luther King, Jr and the Wizard of Oz have in common with the hit song, “I Have A Dream (It Feels Like Home).”

When listening to The City Harmonic, you instinctively turn up the volume and join the chorus as the music dynamically bounces from sparse intimacy to soaring celebration and back again. It’s a musical metaphor for the band that plays it—with their feet in the dirt and their eyes toward the heavens. It isn’t long before you find yourself singing along and not because you ought to, but because you want to. Like a spontaneous outbreak of “Hey Jude” around the campfire, you want in on the moment. And getting people in on the act—hearts pounding and feet moving—is at the core of what The City Harmonic is about. No worship band in recent history has created the kind of reaction the Dove Award nominated The City

Harmonic has with their EP, Introducing The City Harmonic and their powerful full-length album I Have A Dream (It Feels Like Home). Once you hear The City Harmonic for yourself you’ll feel what the buzz is all about. Instantly addicting, they express profound truth and worship in simple and musically creative ways that will resonate with real people. I had the great opportunity to interview front man Elias Dummer about the title track “I Have A Dream (It Feels Like Home).”

the notion of hopeful nostalgia. C.S. Lewis said, “if I find in myself a desire that no experience in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world.”

That’s always been a quote that’s really resonated with me. The song is about the hope of Heaven imprinted on our hearts before the foundation of the world. The song has always been the lynchpin on which the full-length record would hinge. What do you consider to be the take-away message for listeners? We may need a reminder of that in the church. We don’t live in a time As Christians sometimes there’s a where our promises have been fully pressure in the Christian subculture realized. We live in a place that doesn’t feel that happen will just go away. Yet, the Gospel is so very much like home.

“I Have A Dream (It Feels Like Home)” is really about Revelation 21 and the Martin Luther King, Jr. speech, and oddly enough, also the Wizard of Oz. In a sense, Dorothy questions her dream reality world the same way we question this world. At the end, she meets the fraudulent wizard and he tells her she could have gotten home all along. For many of us in the Church, there’s an important lesson there. We now, having a foretaste of heaven, ought to be making this place feel more like home.

Back in the 80’s, a friend invited me to some sort of outdoor concert about an hour from where I was living. Turns out I had that Saturday off from work, and even though I really did not know much about what this event was all about, I decided to take on the adventure. We invited a couple more friends, found someone to drive, packed ourselves in the car, and arrived at Agape Farm. That was the first time I attended the Creation festival. But it was not the last. That year was one I will never forget. We were unprepared for our day out – no chairs, one small blanket, no food, and not much money in our pockets. I was so exhausted by the end of the day (probably from sun exposure without sunscreen) that I fell asleep during the last band! Yet the experience left me wanting more, and wishing it was not the last day. It didn’t take long to figure out this was something I would desire to undertake again. After all, music is my passion. I vowed to come for longer the following year. The next year, I gathered a group of people, we collected tents, blankets, food, and everything needed to camp and fellowship for a few days. In our planning, I didn’t pay much attention to what bands or speakers were on the schedule. For me, Creation festival was becoming so much more than the music or the speakers. A couple of years later, I wasn’t able to arrive at the farm until late Thursday night. The next day, I was surrounded by people intensely focused on our Creator, whereas I was still winding down off work mode from the day before. I don’t know if I had realized prior to this the profound affect of sitting among a bunch of believers, worshipping our Father. I soon began to describe my time at the festival as a little slice of heaven.Since my first adventure, the festival has become an almost annual event. And I’ve become accustomed to attending from day one. Never again would I jump in at the middle of the fest. Each group whom I would camp with might change from year to year in size and range of age. And over time I’ve become closer to friends, and met new ones. But the friends I made as a volunteer will remain for a lifetime. In the late 90’s, I expanded my adventures to include volunteering on staff. Over the years, I pay less attention to what bands are playing or what speaker will be there, as my focus has switched to serving. The real blessing for me has now become not who is on the stage, but serving others. After all, Creation festival is a tribute to our Creator. Not to me. Not to the bands or the speakers. That is perhaps what brings me back year after year. Click Here to learn more about becoming a Creation Volunteer!

MURIEL’S PETTING ZOO featuring a potbellied pig, miniature horse, cow, goats, lamb, Cavy, Alpaca, chickens, ducks, puppies and more will be a great place for the whole family to spend time together, petting and learning about some of God’s special creations. Muriel has blessed Creation with Muriel’s Petting Zoo on site all four days. We hope you to get to know Muriel and her extended family.

MURIEL’S

“I have lived on the farm for over 50 years and have always loved animals and love to share them. I worked in a paper mill as an electrician to raise my family of one girl and 2 boys. When my kids were grown a friend told me I should start a petting zoo since I had so many animals and its what I loved to do. So in '96 I started one and have been doing it since then. My daughter, and grand kids help me and my husband helps with all the maintenance.

STORY

This has been a wonderful job and we love doing it. It’s is a lot of work all year round but very rewarding. I bottle feed the new comers to the zoo to make them friendly. We love coming to Creation we have been coming since 1998. The petting zoo opens around 10 am and closes in the evening just before service. We have a USDA license, insurance, and lots of experience to operate the zoo so everyone has a great and safe time.”
