The History of the Ryder Cup

The 87 years of The Ryder Cup As one of sports unique events, the Ryder Cup captures the imagination of millions worldwide as the best of the best from Europe and USA battle it out. But how did it all start...

T

here were two unofficial matches between professionals from Great Britain and the United States before the birth of The Ryder Cup in 1927; the British won both.

all that is good in sporting competition. It cost £250 and the small golfing figure at the top of the cup, as requested by the donor, stands as a lasting memorial to Abe Mitchell.

becoming the first continental golfers to play in The Ryder Cup. In the subsequent 16 matches, Europe has won eight, the United States seven, with one match tied.

The first was played at Gleneagles in 1921 and the second was held at Wentworth in 1926. This was undoubtedly the most significant for among those in the gallery was a man called Samuel Ryder. He was an English seed merchant and entrepreneur from St Albans in Hertfordshire who made his money selling penny seed packets. He had taken up golf relatively late in life to improve his health and employed Abe Mitchell, one of the golfing greats of his era, as his personal tutor.

In 1935, the fifth match was played in New Jersey and was captained by Charles Whitcombe. The team included his two brothers Ernest and Reg. Three years later in 1938 Reg Whitcombe (who is the great uncle by marriage of the Publisher of this publication) went on to win the Open Championship at Sandwich.

The Ryder Cup has since become one of the world’s greatest sporting contests as every two years 24 of the very best players from Europe and the United States go head-to-head in match play competition.

Ryder was enthralled by the match at Wentworth, and afterwards was heard to say, ‘We must do this again’, and so The Ryder Cup was born. He donated a small gold cup that today epitomises

The first 22 Ryder Cup matches pitched Great Britain and Ireland against the United States, with the USA winning 18, GB and Ireland three and one match, the famous 1969 contest was tied. In 1979, Europe entered into the competition with Seve Ballesteros and Antonio Garrido

Paul McGinley has been elected to captain Europe in 2014, taking on Tom Watson’s American team. We all wish Paul and his team well. We hope the drama of last years match that captivated millions can be repeated. The sportsmanship in which the matches will be played will be true to the spirit of its founder, Samuel Ryder.

THE Ryder Cup

The Ryder Cup - Did you know? A collection of interesting facts about the Ryder Cup you may not know! Volunteers a-plenty The 1800 volunteers needed to help Scotland host the 2014 Ryder Cup have been selected from a record number of applicants. Organisers said 17,500 people, from 27 countries but mostly from Scotland, England, the US, Wales and Ireland, applied to work at the Gleneagles event. Ryder Cup Europe received the largest number of applications for a volunteer programme in the tournament’s history. European Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley said: “I am delighted to welcome the 1800 people who have volunteered to be part of the Gleneagles experience next September. “No golf tournament could exist without volunteers and that is especially true in terms of a competition the size and magnitude of the Ryder Cup.” Ryder Cup operations director Antonia Beggs said: “The process demonstrates the extraordinary appeal of the 2014 Ryder Cup, in Scotland and throughout the rest of the world. It truly is a unique sporting event and people just want to play their part.”

the trophy at Gleneagles next year. It means the Irishman will take five players from the world points list, four from the European list and make up the final 12 with his three picks. “Hopefully, this will ensure I have the right players to face the examination paper that Gleneagles will set out next September,” says McGinley. “It gives me a bit of wiggle room. We could have inclement weather and it’s a golf course we have played on the European Tour for at least ten years now, so there are guys with history there, and they could potentially be picks. There are a number of requirements I’ll be looking at in tailoring the team. But you only need to look at the record books to see we haven’t done too badly of late, so I didn’t see the need to make sweeping changes”.

Ryder Cup Facts i. The golfing figure depicted on top of the trophy reflects the image of Abe Mitchell, a former gardener himself and a friend and instructor of Samuel Ryder. ii. Arnold Palmer was the last playing-captain in 1963 while the last European to undertake both roles was Dai Rees in 1961.

The 2014 Ryder Cup

iii. There have been six holes-in-one at Ryder Cups, only one of them by an American.

The 40th Ryder Cup matches will be held from 26–28 September 2014 on the PGA Centenary Course at the Gleneagles Hotel near Auchterarder in Perthshire, Scotland. This will be the second time that Scotland has hosted the Ryder Cup, the 1973 competition having been played at Muirfield.

iv. Dai Rees captained the Great Britain team the most times, leading them on five occasions in 1955, 1957, 1959, 1961 and 1967. His only victory as skipper came at Lindrick Golf Club in Yorkshire in 1957, as USA suffered what would be only their second defeat between 1933 and 1985.

Europe will go into the contest as the cup holders, having defeated the USA by 14½ points to 13½ in 2012 at the Medinah Country Club in Medinah, Illinois.

v. Tony Jacklin has captained Europe the most with four appearances as skipper in a row from 1983 to 1989, losing the first, winning the next two and drawing the last.

Three Wildcards

vi. Nick Faldo currently holds the record for the most appearances with 11 while he’s also played in more matches and earned up more points than any other player in the history of

Europe’s Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley has announced he will increase his wildcard picks from two to three for his side which will defend clubstohire.com

the event. He played in every Ryder Cup from 1977 to 1997, scoring a total of 25 points from his 46 matches which leaves him one ahead of Germany’s Bernhard Langer (24 from 42) in the all-time rankings. vii. Although Team Europe was formed in 1979 to make the Ryder Cup more competitive, they had to wait until their fourth attempt before they could celebrate victory over the Americans. This was at the Belfry in 1985, when Spain’s Manuel Pinero proved to be the unlikely hero with four points from his five matches as the Europeans claimed a 16.511.5 victory. viii. Seve Ballesteros and Jose Maria Olazabal are easily the most successful Ryder Cup pairing ever and it could take many years before their record is even rivalled, let alone eclipsed. The Spaniards teamed up for 15 matches in total and picked up 12 points, which included 11 wins, two halves and just two defeats. ix. Howard Clark is one of only six players to have managed a Ryder Cup hole-in-one, however he also has his name etched in the competition’s history for the wrong reasons. His 8 & 7 loss to Tom Kite in 1987 was the heaviest ever singles defeat since the format of Ryder Cup matches were changed to a maximum of 18 holes rather than 36.

Team Selection Paul McGinley, who has played in three previous Ryder Cup teams between 2000 and 2006, believes the recent misunderstanding between Sergio Garcia and Tiger Woods during The Players Championship, would not affect his standing in the European Ryder Cup team. Although he knows the two don’t particularly like each other’s company, they don’t have to live with each other. It is therefore quite likely Sergio will remain a candidate for McGinley’s team at Gleneagles.

Algarve Golf Course Reviews

Golf in the Algarve Dear Golfer, Welcome to the Algarve – for more than 40 years one of the premium golf holiday destinations in southern Europe. Since I first golfed as a junior at Penina in 1972 the number of golf courses along the coastline has increased over ten times to more than 30, but the character of the Algarve and its friendly people has not diminished – you will be welcomed warmly whether at a golf club or restaurant or just asking for directions. The golf reviews in this guide provide general information on those Algarve courses. We have assumed that the reader has not visited the Algarve before and provided what we consider to be the most simple directions to the courses.

clubstohire.com

The course reviews start on page 9 at the western end of the coast, continue on pages 14, 18, 20, 22, 24 and 30, ending at the eastern border with Spain. We have used the A22 motorway as a simple starting point for the directions as it runs the full length of the Algarve. Please remember that this is a toll road and the tolls must be paid before leaving Portugal, BUT the good news is that the tolls are quite cheap and can be paid very easily in some post offices 48 hours after use of the motorway. When you collect your car from the hire company it may be a good idea to ask them about their policy on these tolls. In the next issue we will be inviting readers to comment directly to our website by

8

adding their own reviews about the courses in order to provide the latest update, but in the meantime please let us have your important comments by email to: magazine@clubstohire.com We hope you enjoy your trip to the Algarve – and don’t let the golf spoil your walk!

bordered by vineyards and remote scrubland, with views of the Monchique mountains on the horizon.

Parque da Floresta Golf Course

Parque de Floresta (1987) This is one of the hillier courses, with sharply sloping fairways winding along valleys between both luxury villas or apartments and typically Algarvian umbrella pines, eucalyptus, olive and almond trees. Some blind shots to raised greens, well incorporated in to the natural landscape, together with attractive views of the surrounding countryside and the sea create a challenging and interesting golfing experience.

Onyria Palmares (1975/2010) Although originally designed and opened in 1975, the course was revitalised by Robert Trent Jones Jnr in 2010 and extended to 27 holes. The original links holes have been retained but the parkland holes, across and around the hills overlooking the sandy bays and lagoons just east of Lagos, have been improved beyond recognition. A mix of interesting shorter and testing longer holes wind through fig and almond trees, with some sloping greens which test the best of putters. Boavista Golf Course

Boavista (2002) A course of interesting variety, with the first 3 and last 6 holes wending their way through the luxury villas, townhouses and apartments of the resort, while holes 4 to 12 spread out across traditional Algarve countryside with views across both the Monchique hills and Atlantic. The course provides an enjoyable yet challenging test for most golfing abilities, although the par 3 6th hole over a plunging ravine is likely to test everyone to the hilt, and the first class clubhouse bar and restaurant overlooking the 18th green provides the perfect end to the round. At the roundabout which joins the old coastal road EN 125 bear right heading west towards Odiaxere - at the third traffic lights in the village there is a sign for the Palmares course turning to the left. Drive past the small garden and down a slope – keep on the same road following the signs to the course.

A perfect blend of well cooked local products, service, and wine. A great dining experience. This place is really special and anyone staying in the Lagos-Aljezur area should visit it. The restaurant’s name means mouthwatering and the food is certainly that.

A fine restaurant, the covers are fantastic. The fish broth starter is highly recommended guaranteed to be packed full of flavours. The steak dishes are a house speciality especially when served with their potatoes dauphinoise.

For traditional English style cooking, the International offers excellent food at very reasonable prices. This is a must for golfers spending time in the Algarve during the winter months. Their roast beef is always served to perfection, as is their medley of pork and turkey.

Situated on the edge of the old town, experience excellent food and fantastic service. Highly recommended is their Foie Gras with gingerbread, which is sensational. As it is a small restaurant we strongly advise you ring ahead to book.

A favourite restaurant for many. The atmosphere is welcoming and offers superb food. Their steak on a stone has to be tried, as do the hanging kebabs. Many golfers have commented the staff are very attentive and friendly even when really busy.

Situated between Albufeira and Paderne. Whilst Veneza looks like a small roadside café from the outside, appearances can be deceptive - inside it has a warm and welcoming traditional feel, with a Tardis-like wine cellar. Very popular, it’s always best to book.

Penina Championship course

Penina (1966) Penina’s championship course was one of the first on the Algarve and was a benchmark for subsequent 5star golf resorts across the world. The course was designed by Sir Henry Cotton, one of the greatest of British golfers, and although it was laid out on rice fields and consequently likely to be one of the flattest you may play, it is still one of the toughest challenges. The narrow fairways wind through eucalyptus, pine and palms, with a variety of tough water hazards, testing bunkers and predominantly elevated greens. The 9 hole Resort course was also designed by Cotton and replicates the characteristics of the Championship test, and the nine hole Academy course should not be missed.

Directions: At the A22 motorway exit 5 for Portimao take road south into the town. After the third roundabout keep to the left hand side and go down and through a short tunnel. Keep straight on and about 1 km later road curves to the left and feeds into another road. Keep straight and on the last roundabout before the beach take first exit right into a dual carriageway going west. At the next roundabout turn to the right, follow signs to the golf club and turn right at the next small roundabout into the Alto clubhouse.

Pestana Silves Golf Course

Pestana Silves (2007) One of the newest courses on the Algarve and lies in a serene and rural location, surrounded by fruit orchards and olive groves ,with a modern design. Silves requires strategic planning with lots of risk and reward situations – the 1st sets the scene, a tee shot between 2 lakes! Frequent water hazards and awkward bunkers and tricky greens need considerable thought.

Pestana Alto (1991) This was the last of Sir Henry Cotton’s Algarve designs and it is not so punitive as his first at Penina some 25 years earlier. The course lies in beautiful landscaped gardens between luxury villas, town houses and apartments. Its winding fairways and elevated greens test the lower handicaps but provide a pleasant challenge for the average club golfer. The front nine provides views over Lagos bay while the back nine is set in the rolling hills, and at 660yds the 16th is one of the longest par 5s in Europe.

Morgado (2003) & Los Alamos (2006) These 2 courses lie together in the seclusion of an undulating 980 hectare estate some 7 miles north of Portimao. Their relatively broad bermuda fairways wander over an undulating terrain with taxing water hazards and clearly evident bunkers. Approach shots need to be accurate to generally large greens, many with two or more tiers, which test the best of putters. Par: Tees: Par: Tees: Tel:

Pestana Pinta Golf Course

Pestana Vale da Pinta (1992) Set out on the same rolling terrain as its neighbouring younger sister course Gramacho, this club has always had a reputation for its design and high standard of maintenance. The first 9 holes are overlooked by the development’s townhouses and apartments, while the second 9 spread out across a more open landscape. Overall this course provides a good test for all golfing abilities in pleasant surroundings. Par: 71 Tees: White: 6194yds | Yellow: 5730yds Blue: 5730yds | Red: 5316yds Tel: (00351) 282 340 900 www.pestanagolf.com Directions: Take Lagoa/Silves exit 6 from the A22 motorway and head south round two roundabouts heading for Lagoa West, then move into the left hand lane to feed straight on to the N125 going east towards Lagoa. At the next roundabout take first exit right and head back to the west. Follow this road for 700 metres past a petrol station, straight over one roundabout, and left at the next where there is a sign for the Pestana Gramacho and Vale da Pinta courses. Follow the road and turn left at the next roundabout, follow signs to the clubhouse.

Pinta, is now 18 holes, 5–14 winding between villas and apartments and the remaining holes on open undulating ground. Play the course attentively to avoid unusual stony outcrops, drystone walls , well placed water hazards and large bunkers. One unique characteristic is the 27 greens and variety of tee positions – you can play the same course but different holes! Oceanico Faldo (2008) Wide fairways, visually overbearing large white sand bunkers, daunting water hazards, and a landscape like Arizona, all bordered by orange groves with the backdrop of the Monchique mountains, are the first impressions of this course. With water hazards on some 15 holes this course requires a lot of thought – to play safe rather than sorry may be good advice – but it lies more in the valleys and provides excellent alternative golfing entertainment to the Faldo course. Again, the wide selection of tees provides the length of course to suit all standards of golfer. Both courses

Oceanico Victoria (2004) Laid out on the flat coastal plain, this course was designed by Arnold Palmer with a more heathland feel than the 4 other Vilamoura courses. Although it is one of the longest in Portugal it has a selection of 5 tees to suit everyone’s abilities, and the lakes, together with their weirs and waterfalls, provide a good test and attractive backdrop in the absence of the usual umbrella pines. Continue south for about 500 metres and the entrance to the clubhouse is on the right side of this road.

Oceanico Victoria Golf Course

Oceanico Pinhal (1976/1985) This was the second course on Vilamoura, originally designed by Frank Pennink, architect of the nearby Old Course, laid out in 1976, and revamped by Robert Trent Jones Sr in 1985. Gently undulating fairways meander through the umbrella pines and surrounding villas to relatively small greens. The bunkering is very fair and water hazards only really come in to play on 5 holes. Although not as tough as the Old Course this is a very enjoyable test of golf. Par: 72 Tees: White: 6988yds | Yellow: 6505yds Red: 5727yds Tel: (00351) 289 310 390 www.oceanicogolf.com

Continue straight over 2 roundabouts into the clubhouse.

Oceanico Millenium Golf Course

Oceanico Laguna (1990) & Oceanico Millenium (2000) Laguna: Although relatively flat and without the typical Algarvian pine forestation, this course is well hazarded with many bunkers, some tight out of bounds and, as it names suggests, lakes on 11 holes! These aspects, together with the strong sea breezes, make this enjoyable course more testing than it first may appear. This great variety make it a popular golfing location Par: 72 Tees: White: 6773yds | Yellow: 6362yds Red: 5244yds Tel: (00351) 289 310 180 www.oceanicogolf.com

Continue south for about 400 metres and the entrance to the clubhouse for both courses is on the left side of this road.

Oceanico Old Course (1969/1996) As the second to open on the Algarve, this Frank Pennink design has been widely acknowledged as one of the classic courses in southern Europe – fairways wandering among umbrella pines over a generally rolling natural terrain, with only a couple of steeper slopes, and only one lake in play. In 1996 Martin Hawtree conducted a modernisation and although no major changes were made to the course a new clubhouse and practice putting green were built. Having hosted many international professional and amateur tournaments, your round on the Old Course will remain in your memory for some time. Pestana Vila Sol (1991)

Quinta do Lago

The championship course on this 27 hole venue is a combination of the Prime and Challenge nines, with the academy occupying the Prestige nine. Wide sweeping fairways wind through a mix of traditional umbrella pines, almond and fig trees, with a variety of colourful flowers. Streams and lakes add to the challenge of the more open areas of the 75 hectares of a gently rolling terrain.

Both of these established courses provide the benchmark for premium holiday golf! Wide undulating Bermuda grass fairways, with luxury villas set further back than many more modern resorts, wander through pines and require accuracy for a good score but do not penalize the poorer shot beyond recovery. Natural scenery and stunning lagoons add to the enjoyment of golf on this popular resort – a challenge for the lower handicaps yet still a pleasure for the average player.

Vale do Lobo Ocean Golf Course

Vale do Lobo Royal Course (1968 & 1997) This course is comprised of many of the 1968 holes designed by Henry Cotton, very similar to the Ocean course, and another more recently built inland 9 designed by Rocky Rocquemore but based on Cotton’s original drawings. The new 9 is flatter but has some exciting holes around large lakes and adds a great variety to the older 27 holes at the resort. However, the long established 16th par three over the red cliffs is still one of the most popular images of golf in southern Europe.

Laranjal Golf Course

Laranjal (2009) The newest of the Quinta do Lago resort courses, set in the valley of Ludo some 2kms east of the main resort, adds yet another great aspect to this golfing mecca. Wide fairways still require accuracy for the longer hitters but do not punish the average player beyond enjoyment. Although the holes do not wind through the umbrella pines so individually as the other Quinta courses, the visual definition of this more parkland design is provided by some vast bunkers and five lakes.

Directions: From the A22 Motorway take Exit13 for the Airport and head south past Football Stadium on the left. About 1 km further bear right up the slip road and follow signs for N 125 and Almancil. San Lorenzo (1988) This has the same pleasures as the other courses on Quinta do Lago, with wide undulating fairways winding between umbrella pines, large blue lagoons and enormous bunkers, but has a little more intricacy in those holes bordering the sea where there are some interesting risk and reward options. Benamor (2000) Although not one of the longer courses on the Algarve, this is a very relaxing design with delightful views towards both the ocean and the Caldeirao Hills. The architect has left mature trees in very strategic positions, but there are not as many bunkers as on other courses and apart from the boundaries there is not a great deal of heavy rough on this gently undulating, enjoyable parkland course. The website provides an excellent moving panoramic view from each hole’s tee and green . I

f you’re a keen golfer, love Portugal, but don’t enjoy the heat of the Algarve, then why not look at owning a share in a beautiful golf property just 45 minutes from Lisbon’s airport? Five years ago, London-based publisher Christina Hippisley and her family were looking for just that – a golf retreat near Lisbon where they could all play golf, relax near the sea and also be within easy reach of Lisbon’s shopping and restaurants. “I already knew Portugal quite well from having lived in Lisbon and the Algarve in the early 90s”, says Christina, “And I fell in love with the Silver Coast area, just north of Lisbon. It was close to Lisbon and all the golf courses and beaches of the Estoril Coast and Cascais, but around the Obidos lagoon it was also quiet and rural, with unspoilt villages, country fairs, white sandy beaches, and lots of small restaurants off the beaten track. “But we also wanted the house to be on a wellknown golf course, which could generate rental income for us when we weren’t using it, and where we could use the on site villa management team to look after the house”. Once the family had narrowed down their choices, only one place fitted the bill, the Praia D’El Rey Golf and Beach Resort near Obidos, which sits in 230 hectares of spectacular countryside overlooking the sea. Within the

resort, Christina purchased a two bedroom house in the Vila dos Principes condominium, which has full golf rights, overlooks the driving range and is two minutes walk from the clubhouse. Apart from its famous 18-hole golf course (ranked 8th best in Europe by Golf World magazine) Praia D’El Rey also has a five star Marriott Hotel and Spa, and a large tennis centre and fully equipped FIFAlevel football pitch, which are both used year round by international tennis and football teams. There are also two other 18 hole courses nearby, at Bom Sucesso and Royal Obidos, and green fees at the three courses average around Euros 60. After five happy years of ownership, Christina is planning to sell the house, complete with all fixtures and fittings. She thinks it will appeal to two or perhaps four golfing friends who might like to share the property and the rental income it generates, and also use it for golfing and family holidays. “The property is wholly owned by a UK limited company, meaning the shares can easily be split between two or four golfers, and a shareholder’s agreement can be drafted to cover dates and rights of use”, says Christina. “Plus the property generates a valuable year round rental income which the new owners can either choose to keep receiving, or they can take it out of the rental programme and just use it themselves all year round”. A Fractional Ownership (3 rotational months per year) would cost €100,000 For further details contact: stuart@callaghangroup.com
