Congratulations to all the winners of the 2014 Thank You Film Awards, and well done to the thousands of young people across Britain who took part in the awards and made some heart-warming films. This was the second year of the awards and they have really built on the success of the inaugural awards. This year more people took part, and we were able to hold events in four cities across Britain - Manchester, London, Birmingham and Glasgow. The films entered were of an incredibly high standard and I know from talking to the judges they had an extremely difficult time choosing the winners. Not only were the quality of the films impressive, but so were the variety of approaches the filmmakers took to the main theme of gratitude. This year the entrants decided to thank a wide range of people and organisations - from well-known celebrities to charities, from parents and close friends to historical figures. For me, the power of the awards is that it encourages young people to think about who and what they are grateful for in their lives. The process of making a film requires deep thought about this matter, and many of the young people commented during the awards that it has given them a greater appreciation of what the people around them contribute to their lives. However, what is equally powerful is when we show these films to the recipients of the gratitude - it really brings a smile to these people’s faces. I hope you enjoy reading the stories and watching the films as much as I have done. They really do demonstrate the very best of human nature. shortlisted filmmakers attended film premieres in Birmingham, London, Manchester and Glasgow where they saw their films played on the big screens and winners received their prizes!
The entries submitted showcased the huge range of people that young people are grateful for. These included saying thank you to: - Family for the consistent care and love they provide. - Doctors, Nurses and the NHS. - Scientists for discovering and inventing things to improve our lives. - Lollipop Ladies’ and other people who keep us safe and look after us. - Friends for providing fun and laughter, and for caring for us. - Historic leaders for fighting for civil rights and women’s rights. - Authors, producers and artists who shape the cultural landscape and make entertainment for us all. - The fire service, police and ambulance. - Athletes for inspiring us.

When Zuzana Palaez asked the reception class at Victory Primary School who they would like to say thank you to, she was happily surprised that they all said: to my dad!
They thanked their dads with a song, explaining all of the things they love to do together. Then children had an extra idea: to invite their dads to the school and to film them there. The result was Daddies Song, performed by the children for their dads. Zuzena Palaez says the whole process of making the film reinforced and in some cases

Each student had their own reason for choosing the NHS, from providing braces for their teeth to providing care and medication to treat a rare condition, but they also had a joint reason: Ethan.

“Hi! I’m Ethan and I’m 12. When I was born I was diagnosed with a liver disease … It causes itching which sometimes leads to severe pain. When I’m older I will never be able to go out and drink with my friends, like people do every day. In 2009 I climbed Mount Snowden and did a karate class at the top for a liver disease charity.
I raised over two thousand pounds. The NHS recently let me trial a new drug that helps stop itching so it’s easier for me to handle. Thank you.”

Jubilee Centre for Character and Virtues The Jubilee Centre for Character and Virtues is a research centre at the University of Birmingham examining how character and virtues impact on individuals and society. It has a dedicated team of academics from a range of disciplines: philosophy, psychology, education, theology and sociology. A key conviction of the Centre is that the virtues that make up good character can be learnt and
taught, and that the more people exhibit good character and virtues, the healthier our society. As such, the Centre undertakes development projects seeking to promote the practical applications of its research evidence.
