Hebrew Chumash Program Developed by Rabbi Yossi Orkin

r Illustrated by Shifrah Getz

Hi Fellow Builders I can now look at any Verb and tell you the 3 W’s by coloring the “Who-When” letters in Red: 1) “What” Action is being done? 2) “Who” is doing the Action? 3) “When” is the Action being done. I learnt about a special letter Vav (‫ )ו‬that appears in the Chumash. It is called a Vav HaHipuch. This means a “Switching Vav” because it actually “Switches” the Tense of the Verb from “Future Tense to Past Tense”. I color this Letter in Purple. I also learned about 4 Letters that can "Fly Away" like a DOVE. That's why I call them  Letters because a Dove in Hebrew is a . I color the  Letters in Green. I have also learned about the 4 categories of Nouns and I color their Suffix ending in Orange. I have also learnt about an Orange Letter that appears “After” the Foundation Word called a “Pronominal Suffix” that tells me who the object “belongs” to. WOW, with these 6 colors; Black, Orange, Blue, Green, Red and Purple I can actually "see” that there really is a “World within a Word”. This helps me accurately translate and understand the Chumash. I am so excited to continue “Building Brick by Brick”. Let’s Keep on Building,

“WHO-WHEN” LETTERS

A

Every verb contains the following 3 W’s: 1. What Action is being done? (Calling, Blessings or Creating). This is identified by the 3 Root Letters called the Shoresh (

‫ׁשֹורׁש‬ ֶ ).

These 3 Root Letters are colored Blue.

2. Who is doing the Action? (I, you, he, she, we or they).

3. When is the Action being done? (Present Tense, Past Tense or Future Tense) Both “Who” is doing the action & “When” is the action being done, is identified in the Future Tense by a letter before the 3 Root Letters. This letter is called a “Who-When” Letter and is colored Red. At times this Who-When Letter has a partner suffix.
