“The designer who changed cinema.” Having passed away in April of 1996, Saul Bass might have been the most well accomplished graphic designer in history. During his career he worked for some of the greatest filmmakers in Hollywood which includes Stanley Kubrick and persons like Billy Wilder. The breakout of Saul Bass’s career happened in the 1954, when he designed a poster for Carmen Jones. It impressed filmmakers so much, that they requested an opening sequence. He then became a designer who was in demand. The results broke the influence of the ordinary, inactive way of acknowledging the cast, his signature approached to movie titles precipitated the entire project and increase rapidly during the 1950s to the heights of his career. Film like ‘The man with the golden arm’ and ‘Anatomy of a murder’ were considered an all-time favorite by his fans. Bass de-cuttered the film poser and made something which was off grid and simple in design. It was said he added design to something which was previously put together. In the 1960s and 1970s he created a corporate identity for the United airlines and AT&T. These designs came from his interpretation and approach to film sequence as an identity and as a device for setting the atmosphere of the story. Paul’s legacy is still cherished and remembered with the revolution that he brought by his innovative opening credits for the film industry and movie posters. Bass’s designs are a clever recall to his influence within the Bauhaus school of design, his childhood interest in iconographic symbolic Egyptian art and Russian Constructivism. Page 1

The reason he stands out from other designers is because of his non-conformity.
Why is he an important designer to me? Thinking back, when I first started graphic design with Penn Foster College, he was one of the designers who caught my eye. After a prolong research on Saul Bass his artwork style is an inspiration to me. He had the ability to tell a story using color, or the unusual shape of images and letters, with minimal elements that he used to make us the viewers see the message. With Bass, he makes us think outside the box, we can take any idea and play around with it, make it more visual. He says so much in such little designs, turning substance into style because as we all know style is substance. The use of color in his artwork also is an inspiration to me, Bass kept colours to a minimum, usually just three or four, white black and with any additional color being either the contrasting color that the eye is drawn to, Bass was obsessed with the color red. Red bring that instant attraction, it stands out and demands attention all by its self, another thing his work was known for was the constant use of negative space, and color contrast without being to busy. He used icons like hands, faces and everyday objects to design his poster. He has this purposeful nastiness hand-written, drawn artwork which was perfection. Looking at his work especial his movie posters seems as much work as putting the movie itself together. Bass in his own words said, “I want to make beautiful things, even if nobody cares”.

Lauren Hom November 15th, 1990 By: Courtney Mitchell Laura Hom is a 30-year-old designer/typographer. She was born in California. In 2013 Hom earned her BFA at the School of Visual Arts for Advertising in NYC. Hom has worked with multiple clients such as Google, Starbucks, and Vans. She has a few online classes on her website that show how to create murals, typography tips and turn passion projects into jobs. Lauren also has a book/blog called Daily Dishonesty. She says, "Daily Dishonesty is a book and award-winning hand-lettering blog. It combines my love of typography, humor, copywriting, and illustration. The blog documents the lies I tell myself on a regular basis." Daily Dishonesty — Hom Sweet Hom. (https://www.homsweethom.com/daily-dishonesty-1/) Hom has also been on plenty of podcasts on Youtube, including The Futur with Chris Do, The Pencil Pusher's Podcast, and many more. She has plenty of information for young aspiring designers through these podcasts and her website www.homsweethom.com. After finding this very talented designer and seeing her typography, I have wanted to work on my typography and improve my skill in type and fonts. I love her free-flowing style, and her honesty and the way she is so down to earth inspire me to be the same in my way. She seems the type of person that is not fake; she is so natural in every sense. Her actions show in her book as well; she is real in the sense of having struggles and telling herself lies, as we all do. A few of her murals are on display for Google, Prudential, and Pack Hackers. These large, gorgeous murals are anywhere from 6 feet to 12 feet tall, and they all include a phrase made for the company in her famous fonts and a design in the background.

Her other works include greeting cards, food products, wine bottles, and book covers. You can see some of them below. Most include bright in your face colors such as blues to pinks and greens to golds. I feel that the colors, lettering, and the way she puts her work together really tell whatever story she is trying to tell with that piece. Looking at her work, I have a new spark in my creative soul that makes me want to try new ways to create fonts and use typography. Her colorfulness, her spunk, and just how she teaches inspire me. Looking at her work combined, I feel that she truly knows what she is doing because she can quickly go from a small greeting card to a large mural and still fill the entire space. She has got many skills that anyone could learn from her.

JOHNSON
MICHAEL
“NOW TRY SOMETHING WEIRDER”
BY LIAM MCKAY
When I first went into graphic design I genuinely first thought of creating great artwork and comic style graphics. Then once I had started my study I had to do research about all the different avenues that graphic design could bring you down. This led me into a great big rabbit hole in discovery that widened my eyes and changed my perspective. On this journey I had come across Johnson Banks and researched into Michael Johnson and immediately fell in love with the way he thinks outside the box, inside the box, around the box and does not think about the box at all. His amazing way of not just overcoming problems he faced in the designing world but his philanthropic way of teaching others to overcome all the different challenges faced in this profession. I wanted To give a better understanding of the way in which he helped inspire me I wanted to show some examples of his designs and how he overcome the obstacles.
WHEN DESIGNING THIS PIECE ... … Michael was asked to design stamps to showcase British Fashion but faced a challenge with using models in the clothes. This would distract from the clothes them self and to take pictures of them on hangers just did not look right. So Michael decided to take photos of the clothes on models and then digitally remove them after. This shows movement and structure in the clothes and created something rather unique.
Page 5
WHEN DESIGNING THIS PIECE ... … Michael had be asked to create some barrel art for a very well known Scottish distillery. The ideas being populated was rather ordinary so he decided to take a step back and look a look from a different angle… The angle too look from was from the perspective of the barrel. What would the barrels describe as the job they had to do? This got the creative juices flowing!!!
…Negative space could be extremely useful in designing a logo. When Michael made the Mister Cooper Ice Logo he described the use of using negative space the verge of an optical illusion when you can see the words ICE CREAM in the centre of Mister Cooper.
“YOU WON’T COMMUNICATE FULLY WITHOUT WORDS.” …One that really stuck with me was a piece that Michael Johnson done for a campaign that was used to show that historic houses are still lived in and accessible. Michael uses this to show that both verbal and visual language are used heavily in communication. Advice that he has given is to start experimenting with the interplay of words and pictures and that writing regularly helps you become a better writer.
