> Little Cornish Facts > > The immortal lines “They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old” were written on cliffs above Polzeath (nr padstow) by Laurence Binyon in 1914.
> The world’s first ever road carriage ran in Camborne on Christmas Eve 1801, it was built by engineer Richard Trevithick who was born in Illogan.
> Holiday-makers eat around 13,500 pasties a day.
> St Michaels Mount, was built in 1135 by Bernard of Le Bec, Abbot of Mount St Michel in Normandy France.
> 150 years ago, leftover scraps of meat or fish were mixed with root vegetables to make the traditional filling of the Cornish pasty. > The pasty crust was rarely eaten my miners because of the poisonous chemicals they had on their hands (including arsenic). They would hold the crust, eat everything around it and throw the crust away. > The first reference to pasty can be linked to Cornwall. A baker from Cornwall wrote to Jane Seymour saying “hope this pasty reaches you in better condition than the last one.”
> The first ever wind turbine was constructed in Redruth in 1892. > The first house in the world to be lit by Gas is in Redruth - installed by William Murdock in 1794. > Despite the rain, Cornwall is the sunniest county in Great Britain, getting at least 1,500 hours of sunshine a year. > In 2005 there were as many registered sheep living in Cornwall as there were people!

She designed, constructed and financed the entire project. > China clay was discovered by William Cookworthy in 1746 at Tregonning Hill, near Helston and is Cornwall’s largest export, other than the pasty! > The Skidden House Hotel, the first hotel in St Ives, was built in 1540. It was the first place to sell Irish Stout and women (it was also a brothel!). > The worlds first ever powered aircraft flight was made by a Cornishman, Richard Pearse.
