Everyone loves an ‘oggy’ (pasty) Tuck into our selection of tasty pasty facts and enjoy a special offer from local bakers, Warrens.... The word pasty comes from a middle English word meaning made of paste (pastry) and an Oggy is a slang term for the Cornish pasty derived from its Cornish name, hoggan. A true Cornish pasty is always crimped by hand and made with between 17 and 21 individual crimps. The earliest refernce to a cornish pasty dates back to the 13th centruy. Holiday-makers eat around 13,500 pasties a day.
It was once said the devil would never dare to cross the River Tamar into Cornwall for fear of ending up as a filling in a Cornish pasty. Some Mines built huge ovens on the surface to keep the miners’ pasties hot until it was time to eat. Cornish tin miners would always leave a piece of their lunchtime pasty for the knockers – the spirits who inhabited the mine workings.

Penwith encompasses the most westerly points in the UK. It reaches from Land’s End to Gwithian, meaning that three of its sides are surrounded by water; making it perfect for piracy and smugglers in days gone by.
It is difficult to separate myth from reality when it comes to smugglers in Cornwall. One famous story how Prussia Cove got it’s name is that of the notorious John Carter. The Carter family ran an efficient and profitable smuggling operation. John was nicknamed ‘The King of Prussia’ after a childhood game he played with his brothers when he pretended to be Frederick the Great, the real King of Prussia. Prussia Cove (originally Portleah) was named after him. Along the coast is a town called Paul where Dolly Pentreath lived, said to have been the last person to speak Cornish as her first language. Dolly sold fish, smoked her pipe, drank flagons of beer and spoke proper Cornish. She died in 1777 and there is a memorial dedicated to her in the town.

A cliff top perfo rman ce!
Just along from Paul, is a town called Mousehole, (pronounced Mowzel, not mouse hole!), here on December 19th 1981, disaster struck when the Penlee Lifeboat went to the aid of the stricken Union Star, with winds at hurricane force 12 and the sea reaching 60ft high. The last contact with the lifeboat was to say they had rescued four of the eight people aboard the Union Star. Only 7 of the 16 bodies were ever found, rocking the close knit community. Days before the disaster one crew member had turned on the famous Mousehole Christmas lights. After the storm, the lights were left off but his widow asked for them to be turned back on, since then the village has been lit up each December, being turned off for an hour to mark the anniversary each year.

The Lizard Peninsula in Kerrier is the most southerly point in mainland Britain; it is also one of the most stunning. The shoreline around the Lizard has many beautiful coves, some of which may have lost treasure within them, such as Church Cove. In 1526 a treasure ship that belonged to the King of Portugal sank, a lot of attempts have been made to recover the treasure, but none have ever succeeded. Then in 1785 a ship carrying a cargo of gold coins ran aground, which makes this area still popular with modern treasure hunters. It’s also reported that a bold Buccaneer called Avery buried treasure in Kennack Cove. Moving inland the biggest change is the sight of the many mines in Kerrier. Dolcoath mine (Camborne) was a copper and tin mine, it was known as ‘The Queen of Cornish Mines’ as it was the deepest in Cornwall reaching 3,300 feet below the surface. Helston is well-known for its internationally famous festival Flora Day or the Furry Dance held on the 8th of May (except when this date falls on a Sunday
Witn ess the powe r of the ocean
or Monday). This is said to be a pre-Christian festivity, which is connected with ancient spring festivals all over Europe. The town is decorated with bluebells, laurel leaves, gorse and colourful flags. During the day there is a ‘children dance’ and the ‘principles dance,’ in which participants weave in and out of shops and houses to the beat of the Flora Dance tune. Halfway up Helston you may spot the Blue Anchor, which was originally a monks rest house and became a tavern in the 15th century where miners would receive their wages, the pub is said to be the oldest private brewery in the country. Further up is one of the oldest buildings in Helston, The Angel Hotel, it has been used as an excise house, a major centre for cock fighting and a temporary jail for smugglers one of whom managed to escape by getting the jailers drunk!

Visit Redruth: the Heart of Cornish Mining and world heritage site The Cornish Mining landscapes are rich with history. The Camborne and Redruth Mining District, focused around Carn Brea, was the most important and complex of the districts in Cornwall and West Devon, it contained most of its most significant mines and key industrial enterprise. Because of this it experienced widespread urbanisation of what had been a rural landscape. By the 19th century around 25% of Cornwall’s population was employed in the mines alone, including men, women and children!
Discover the min ing hea rtla nd
Cornish copper accounted for more than one third of the world’s production during the 18th century and nearly all of it came from the Redruth area. In Redruth, you can still see remnants from its bustling past – miner’s cottages line the main roads and the Pedn-An-Drea mine stack dominates the Eastern skyline. The array of historical buildings, such as the Mining Exchange, have their own tales to tell; mine captains were fined for swearing inside the building! Arguably the most iconic building in Redruth, the Town Clock, was formerly used as a prison, and in 1904 was raised by a whole storey so that miners living in new houses at the top of town could see the clock and get to work on time! The Cornish Global Migration Programme is a ground breaking project which documents the Cornish pioneers that went to every corner of the world; Australia, South Africa, Canada, USA, New Zealand/Aotearoa, India and South America to name just a few. Visit them at Murdoch House, Cross Street on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings. The Mineral Tramways offer a great way to experience the fantastic landscape, whether you choose to cycle, walk or ride. The network of trails, centred around Camborne and Redruth provides mainly level, traffic-free access to one of Cornwall’s historic mining regions. There are over 37 miles of adventure and discovery to enjoy. Witness the unique collection of restored tin processing equipment at King Edward Mine, a former training centre for mining students dating from the turn of the 20th century – one of only a few remaining mine sites with extensive collections of machinery in Cornwall.

carrick Carrick spans, broadly speaking from Falmouth on the south coast to Perranporth on the North. Now a popular beach for locals and tourists alike, Perranporth was the site of an ancient religious building, which has been lost under the encroaching sands. The oratory of St Piran, a Celtic monastery is thought to be the oldest Christian building on mainland Britain. The shrine which was buried under sands before 1500 is said to contain relics of St Piran. St Piran is the patron saint of Cornwall and so is of huge importance to the Cornish people, so much so that his life is celebrated on the 5th of March each year. On the south coast is the port town of Falmouth. Famous for its deep harbour, reputed to be the third largest in the world, Falmouth has long since been the start or finish point for many round the world record breaking voyagers, including Charles Darwin who set sail on The Beagle in 1836, and Dame Ellen MacArthur whose round the world trip started and ended here.

Travelling east from Falmouth is the town of Veryan, a coastal civil parish on the Roseland Peninsula. A mile from Veryan is Carne Beacon, said to be the largest burial mound in Britain, and the burial place of the Cornish saint King Gennius (Geraint). Local legend says that he was buried with a golden boat with silver oars. On top of the mound is a concrete slab which was used as a viewing post in WWII. Inland is Truro, Cornwall’s only city, with a cathedral dating back to 1259. Today this old building is now a church (a remnant of the original St Marys Church) within the cathedral, John Loughborough Pearson gained permission to keep part of the old parish when he was making plans for the new one, he incorporated the South Aisle of the church in to his design.

Strid e out along the coast
Newquay is probably the most well-known town in the Restormel district and Watergate Bay lies 2 miles north of here on the Padstow Road. In 2007 it played host to the English Nationals Surfing Championships and also has provided the location for many film and TV productions. Crantock lies just below Newquay, wrecking was famous here and had many a cargo of contraband that was hidden away from the Excise men. Legend has it that the village which used to be known as Langurroc (The Dwelling of Monks) was covered up in a sandstorm and may well lie beneath the sand dunes on Crantock beach. To the left of the beach, low tide allegedly reveals a carving into a rock, featuring a woman’s face with an inscription ‘mar not my face, but let me be, safe in this lone cavern by the sea, let the waves around me roar, kissing my lips for ever more.’ It is believed that shipwrecked fisherman carved this several hundred years ago. Restormel spans from the North to the South coast. Between the two coasts is a town called Roche,

where at Roche Rock a fifteenth-century chapel perched atop the outcrop of granite lies. Myth states that when the chapel was abandoned it was occupied by a hermit who was a leper. The village of Indian Queens lies just off the A30, how the area got its name has a few explanations, each version agrees that the name comes from the old Inn. An inscription on the porch of the pub told the story of a Portuguese princess who landed at Falmouth, it’s reported that she slept one night at the Inn on her way to London, her appearance gave the locals the impression that she was Indian. It has also been suggested that she was Pocahontas (1595-1671) an American Indian who was a daughter of Powhatan, the chief of an Indian tribe.

The rugg ed beauty of the North
Coast
North Cornwall extends, approximately, from Porthcothan to Hartland and down to Bodmin Moor. Tintagel lies about halfway along the coast of North Cornwall and has long since been connected to the mysteries surrounding King Arthur, who it is said was conceived there. Richard, Earl of Cornwall built his castle in 1233, local folklore states that it was built to evoke the romanticism of the King Arthur legend. The castle has been excavated many times and finds have included a 1,500 year old piece of slate on which were inscribed two Latin inscriptions. One reads ‘Artognou, father of a descendant of Coll, has had (this) made.’ No one knows who exactly Artognou is and it continues to be a mystery.

Gwin – Wine
Just up the coast is the small town of Boscastle which became nationally known for the 2004 floods. The cause of the very heavy localised rain is thought to be an extreme example of the Brown Willy effect. Brown Willy is the highest point on Bodmin Moor and in fact in Cornwall. The ‘effect’ is a metrological phenomenon that sometimes occurs in the south-west. Padstow has a long history dating back to before 2500 BC. People travelling from Brittany to Ireland used the Fowey/Camel valleys on their journey, and recently ‘The Saints Way’ has been reopened meaning that walkers can trace the footsteps of the early travelers.

caradon
Many stories surround the area of Caradon, including that of the bottomless Dozmary Pool. Jan Tregagle was said to have been a disciple of the Devil who was doomed to empty the bottomless pool with a leaking limpet shell for eternity in penance for his crimes. Tregagle was an early 17th century magistrate, who was said to have robbed his fortune from the estate of an orphan. Another more famous legend is that of King Arthur and Excalibur.
Disco ver harbour town s
a large cat skull whilst walking along the river Fowey. It was sent to the Natural History museum where it was discovered that the skull in fact belonged to an imported fur rug!
On the coast of Caradon lies the town of Looe. Looe Island also known as St Georges Island lies a mile from the mainland town. Legend has it that Joseph Bodmin Moor (half of which lies within North Cornwall) of Arimathea (the uncle of the Virgin Mary) landed here with the child Christ, and left him to play on the beach is also said to be home of the Beast of Bodmin whilst conducting his business. There are also many Moor. Lots of people claim to have seen the beast and described it as a black panther like creature. The smugglers tales surrounding the island including that Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food conducted of Fyn and Black Joan, who were a brother and sister an official investigation in 1995, but found ‘no verifiable team with a gruesome history (Joan is said to have been much more vicious than Fyn), they are thought evidence’ of the beast; however it was clear that there was no evidence to say that the beast didn’t actually to have hidden their contraband in a secret cave, exist. Days after the report a 14 year old boy found although the location has never been definite.

Fly With me Whether you’re after a weekend break or visiting friends and family, NQY’s airlines take the hassle out of the long and expensive journeys by road or rail. Fly from Aberdeen-Belfast-Edinburgh-GlasgowInverness-Isle of Man-Leeds Bradford-London Gatwick-Manchester. Newquay Cornwall Airport (NQY) opens up its region for both business and leisure passengers. The airport is particularly important in Cornwall, where transport infrastructure and distances from key markets can be a real business constraint, affecting growth, productivity and competitiveness. By offering year round, frequent flights to cities like Manchester and London, it means Cornwall
can stay connected to major airport hubs making both European and long haul flight connections effortless. NQY’s route network more than doubles in the summer opening up leisure routes for city breaks throughout the UK or for travellers to enjoy the impressive coastline, golf courses and quirky towns Cornwall has to offer. For information on some great days out and an events guide visit www.seymacdistribution.com The charter network at NQY has been growing year on year. Many thousand Cornish residents face long onward journeys to other airports for sun destinations, we are actively approaching tour operators to offer holidays from closer to home.
