WATER ~ SOURCES AND TYPICAL CHARACTERISTICS...

WATER FOR BUSINESS...

The Water Cycle. Approximately 70% of the earth's surface is covered with water, most of which is sea water. Most of human requirement is fresh water containing a fraction of the minerals found in sea water.

Concerns over the quality of water in the business circle has dramatically increased the demand for various types of treatment.

Fortunately a natural cycle occurs, resulting in fresh water distribution over most of earth's surface. Sun evaporates sea water. Water vapour cools & condenses as clouds. Clouds become saturated and shed condensed water as rain. Rain flows over earth's surface to form rivers, streams, lakes or into the surface to form wells, springs and aquifers. These two types of water source are called surface & sub~ surface supplies. All waters return eventually to the sea and the cycle starts again.

Your water will normally contain chlorine and varying amounts of dissolved minerals including Calcium (limescale), Magnesium, Sodium, Chlorides and Sulphates. It is also not uncommon to find traces of Iron, Manganese, Copper, Aluminium, Nitrates, Insecticides and Herbicides. Within industry, water related problems accounts for millions of pounds spent on downtime and maintenance, whereby associated problems can be rectified by installing equipment to help preserve and improve the life of equipment such as commercial boilers and plant machinery. THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION CONTAINED IN THIS DOCUMENT WILL HELP GENERAL MANAGERS, MAINTENANCE PERSONNEL AND TECHNICANS DECIDE ON THE APPROPRIATE ACTION.

WATER HARDNESS

OVERVIEW...

There are two types of hardness. Temporary hardness, which comes out of the water when it’s heated and permanent hardness which is unaffected by heating. Measuring the extent of water hardness and the effect on appliance efficiency is the key to providing the appropriate solution.

Most water heating appliances such as calorifiers, direct fired gas water heaters or plate heat exchangers, will require scale control if the hardness is 100 ppm or above.

In general, if the water is to be used for washing and cleaning processes or to produce steam, then water softening or Calcium treatment will be required with either CalSimplex, CalDuplex ot CalCTU units.

MORE DETAILED INFORMATION ON SCALE POTENTIAL AND TYPICAL WATER TREATMENT REFERENCES ON THE FOLLOWING PAGES.

For other hot water systems, where the priority is to prevent scale formation, but to help keep the system maintenance to a minimum, a physical scale inhibitor, such as the Calmag Electromag unit may be required. Laboratories or other departments which use water for cooling processes or directly for treatment processes may require scale control or various levels of filtration (CalFilter). ITU, Transplant or other wards containing patients with suppressed immune systems may require additional water treatment to reduce the risk of infection. This could be the CalUltra UV Disinfection System to feed all cold water services feeding taps, showers, baths and drinking water outlets. On the incoming cold water mains supplies where there is evidence of silt, grit and rust particles, it is good practice to filter the water to 5 micron with a CalMax S Filtration Unit to prevent build up of this material in storage tanks and pipework. This will not only assist in preventing corrosion damage, but also eliminate growth of bacteria.

SCALE INHIBITORS: HOW THEY WORK... KEY BENEFITS WATER NORMALLY CONTAINS IONS AND IONS ~ AS WE KNOW OPPPOSITES ATTRACT. AS WATER IS HEATED THESE POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE IONS COME TOGETHER TO FORM LIMESCALE.

THROUGH A SCALE INHIBITOR WE INDUCE A SINGLE POLARITY WHEREBY THE AND IONS, BOTH BECOME WHICH AS WE KNOW TWO NEGATIVES REPEL WHICH PREVENTS THE LIMESCALE FORMING.

SCALE INHIBITORS DO NOT EFFECT THE WATER HARDNESS LEVELS (PPM) ~ THEY JUST REDUCE THE LIMESCALE FORMING, THROUGH HEATED WATER.

• ECONOMICAL TO OPERATE • NO MAINTENANCE • COMPETITIVE INITIAL COST • NO CHEMICALS USED • WATER REMAINS POTABLE • EASY TO INSTALL • STOPS HARD SCALE FORMING Will prevent scale formation within... Softened water containing Sodium

Brine solution containing Sodium

Hard water passes though a control unit into the resin vessel. Calcium and Magnesium, constituents of water hardness, are attached to the Sodium saturated resin beads, usually sulfonated polystyrene. This simultaneously releases Sodium ions and water hardness is elminated. The process is called ion exchange. When the resin becomes saturated with Calcium and Magnesiu it’s recharged by passing a salt solution (brine) through the resin.

ULTRA VIOLET DISINFECTION: HOW IT WORKS... The components in an Ultra Violet unit are quite straightforward. The heart of the system is the UV lamp (germicidal lamp) which is similar to a fluorescent tube. This tube produces an intensity of light sufficient to penetrate through to the DNA core of bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa and algae causing a molecular rearrangement which effectively halts any reproduction, rendering it ‘dead’. PRINCIPLES OF OPERATION 1 Water enters the UV chamber and flows into an annular space

between the quartz sleeve 2 and the outside chamber wall. 3 The water is exposed to the UV light from the mercury germicidal lamp 4 thereby disinfecting the micro-organisms and rendering it dead.

ULTRA VIOLET DISINFECTION: When specifying products for bathing, showering and washroom facilities in schools, hospitals and other healthcare facilities, safety of the user has to be the prime consideration; especially to combat legionella. Together with this, England and Wales are served by some 100,000 private water supplies and 38,000 in Scotland where the water is drawn from a well, spring, river or lake. Many of these supplies will not have received prior treatment at a water works which means that the water is unlikely to meet the standards set the the Private Water Supplies Regulators. In the above cases, water disinfection by Ultra Violet light is the easiest and most cost effective option to those responsible for the Supply. UK Physical Water Conditioning Association has called for minimum hardness levels to be set, along with maximum sodium levels and limitations of the potential for the growth of microbes.

Exposed water supply

This illustration shows how an unprotected water supply can provide water for areas of hygenic importance in an environment used by multiple persons.

KEY INFORMATION THE FOLLOWING CONDITIONS EFFECT THE GROWTH OF LEGIONELLA • Water temperatures in the range 20 to 45º C. It does not survive at temperatures above 60ºC. • Sediment, sludge, scale and organic matter can act as a source of nutrients, as can other organisms in water such as other bacteria and algae. • The slime, or biofilm, that often forms on the surface of water, provides favourable conditions for growth. • Biofilms, sludge, corrosion etc. can adversely affect some treatment methods. • Systems that eject water as an aerosol or as droplets pose the biggest risk, as water in this form can be more easily inhaled. Typical Areas of Risk... Water systems incorporating cooling towers and condensers. Hot- and cold-water services. Spray humidifiers that create a spray of water droplets and in which the water temperature is likely to exceed 20ºC. Spa baths and pools in which warm water is deliberately agitated and recirculated.

Typical workplace environment

Other plant and system containing water which is likely to be in the temperature range 20 to 45ºC and which may release a spray or aerosol during operation or when being maintained may also prevent risk.

REVERSE OSMOSIS: HOW IT WORKS Reverse Osmosis is the ‘reversal of the natural phenomenon of osmosis, brought about by the application of hydraulic pressure, greater than the osmotic pressure in water, containing dissolved solids cause the molecules of water to flow through the membrane away from the dissolved substances’ THE PROCESS OF REVERSE OSMOSIS REMOVES 91 ~ 99% OF TOTAL DISSOLVED SOLIDS FROM YOUR WATER MAKING IT THE MOST EFFECTIVE FORM OF WATER FILTRATION. The movement of water from soils into plant roots is one example of osmosis at work in nature. Where as filtration is the process of removing contaminants from water, Reverse Osmosis is the process of removing water from contaminants. KEY BENEFITS • Removes 91-99% of all dissolved solids from water. • Provides water of extreme purity for many specialist applications. • Can be the simplest way to remove certain contaminants from water. • Domestic, Commercial and Industrial systems available.
