New Year, New You By Kelly Appelman “New Year, New Me.” It’s the saying that comes around every January. We hear it time and time again from our friends and coworkers; we see people post it on social media and we may even say it ourselves. Sometimes, people are referring to their attitude and perspective, or that they will work harder at school or work. Some mean that they will spend more time with Family and friends. Other times, it is meant to signify that they will change eating habits and make healthier choices. For a lot of people, “new year, new me” means getting up, getting active and exercising on a regular basis.

opportunities to get up and get moving. MWR also has four physical fitness centers: Gammon PFC, Natcher PFC, Otto PFC and Smith PFC, that offer more than just weights and treadmills to keep working out fun, diverse and challenging. A rock climbing wall, a new functional fitness space, an indoor swimming pool and TRX suspension training are a few examples of what these gyms have to offer.

Exercise. We all know the word. You may cringe at the very thought of it and begin thinking of any excuse in the book to switch the focus to something more enjoyable. On the other hand, there are some of you who perk up and are ready to go at the first mention of the word. Some have been in both situations, eager to exercise one day and avoiding the thought the next. It seems that every January more people than usual are eager to exercise on a regular basis. About a month or two into the New Year, however, the excitement for exercise begins to wear off. Resolutions become old news, “new year, new me” fades, exercise gets put on the back burner and people go back to their old ways. An exercise routine can be hard to establish, and with a busy lifestyle, can be even harder to maintain. Fort Knox Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation offers many different opportunities for exercise that may help you stay in the routine of exercising. From golfing at Lindsey Golf Course, to bowling at Houston Bowling Center, to swimming at Anderson Aquatics, there are countless

With fitness classes ranging from Zumba, to cycling, to circuit and resistance training, there is sure to be a class that aligns with your interests. Classes can be beneficial because there are others going through the exact thing you are going through and are able to motivate you. If playing sports is more in your realm of the workout world, Natcher PFC has three full-sized basketball courts available for both basketball, and volleyball, and two racquetball courts. Indoor volleyball intramurals also begin in February, offering a fun and competitive way to get moving. If actual exercise, in any form, isn’t for you, three of the four gyms also have saunas where you can sit and open your pores and sweat out all the impurities of your body. Sitting in a sauna is also proven to help with anti-viral activity, weight loss, improved circulation and skin conditioning. If “new year, new me” means exercising for you, I encourage you to see what MWR facilities have to offer. Get a personal trainer, join a class or just dive right in yourself - whatever makes you feel most comfortable. Remember, start slow and don’t set unrealistic goals. Find ways to make exercising fun and it will more easily stay part of your weekly routine for the entire year. Remember, working out is not necessarily about losing weight. It is about having more energy, feeling better about yourself and being healthy. Aren’t you excited to see the new you? Visit knox.armymwr.com for more information on each MWR facility.

Give Blood, Give Life, Easy As 1, 2, 3... By Christy Jackson

It’s hard to imagine a society without the life saving replacement blood services we’ve come to rely on, maybe even take for granted. Can you envision a time when, if you were injured and lost too much blood there was no storage of clean, safe blood to save your life? Prior to 1941 that was the reality. transfu In 1665, the first recorded successful blood transfusion occurred in England: Physician Richard Lower kept a dog alive by transfusing blood from other dogs. By 1667, Jean-Baptiste Denis in France and Richard Lowerr,, alon along with Edmund King in Eng England, separately report successful transfusions of blood from sheep to humans. Fast forward to the war torn era of the early 1940’s, the American Red Cross begins it’s National Blood Donor Service to collect blood for the U.S. Military led by Dr. Charles R. Drew. Fort Knox Automotive Skills and Service Center

Your Facility to Support all Your Automotive Needs By Chris Nelson, Manager, Automotive Skills and Service Center

I volunteered to write this article and now wonder what to write. It should be fairly easy to come up with some sort of technical automotive jargon that most readers won’t understand, after working in the automotive repair and service industry, both as a Soldier and a civilian for the past 40 years.

We offer some basic automotive skills training and special ordering of parts, which may be required to help you along with your individual projects. Our staff is here to help. For those of you that have no desire or time to work on your cars and trucks, we offer a full service repair shop within the same facility. This area of the facility has 10 established bays, lifts, state of the art tire balancers, diagnostic tools and readers, alignment machines, and three technicians and two vehicle servicers. We add to your vehicle support and provide the following repairs and services: Oil Changes, Tire Rotation and Balance, Alignments, Engine Diagnostics (check engine light on), Steering and Suspension Repairs, Heating and Air Conditioning Diagnostics and Repairs. We also service and repair all Brake Systems. Additionally, our contracted parts suppliers provide a 90-95% same day delivery for all special order parts. We also stock over 200 items including: oils, lubricants, wiper blades, fluids and tires. Brakes and tires are one of our biggest sellers. We stock most of the common sizes and can get specialty tires from our two suppliers. Purchasing our tires includes free mounting and balancing. Additionally, we offer free tire repair, rotation and balance for the life of the tire when brought back to the facility.

The easiest place to start is with the basics. As I meet and greet our patrons in the course of managing the Auto Craft Shop I hear many times from visitors to our facility, “I did not know you fixed cars,” “Where is the AAFEES auto repair facility,” “You sell tires, I did not know that,” and those type questions go on and on. The Automotive Skills and Service Center is your facility. You have a 42 bay facility for automotive service and repairs for the self-helper. Included in the facility are lifts, hand and special tools, advice and guidance from on site ASE Certified technicians. You also have a place to dispose of oil, hazardous materials (automotive components) and scrap metal.

knox.armymwr.com

Our prices are very competitive with automotive repair and service facilities not located on Post. I think we are the best game in town. Come in, or, call and check us out and judge for yourself. We are located at 706 Spearhead Division Avenue, Bldg. 1054. Our hours of operation are Tuesday – Friday 7:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., and Saturday 8:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. We are closed on Sundays and National Holidays. For questions or more information, call (502) 624-5338.

By Alison Dupont

Over the past ten years Army Community Service (ACS) Financial Counselors have met with thousands of Soldiers, Family members, Retirees and Civilian employees about their finances and how they control their money, or how it controls them. This time of year, the financial focus generally turns to tax returns and how the money will be spent; not how it will be saved. Taking a “Leap into Savings” might be just what you need! Since 2003, the Department of Defense has joined forces with “America Saves,” the larger nation-wide campaign for all Americans, which seeks to motivate, encourage and support saving money, reducing debt and building wealth. In 2007, “Military Saves Campaign” was launched and since then over 180,000 individuals have taken the pledge to save money and/or reduce debt. For the past decade, Fort Knox ACS, Fort Knox Federal Credit Union, and Armed Forces Bank have teamed up to promote, motivate and educate individuals on setting financial goals and making a plan, which includes saving. It is no surprise that everyone’s plan is not the same. Based on this knowledge, the Fort Knox “Military Saves Team” created “Leap into Savings.” Throughout the month of January, “The Team” invites you to join us as we “Leap into Savings.” Sign up at Event Brite – www.eventbrite.com and pick up your “Leap into Savings” tracker at Army Community Service, Armed Forces Bank, or Fort Knox Federal Credit Union (Post locations). This automatically registers you for a chance to win a prize. On your own, or with

the assistance of an ACS Finance Counselor, you have the month of January to set personal goals for tracking spending, reducing debt and even planning for your tax return! Then LEAP into February on the first of the month, by challenging yourself for 28 days, and putting your goals into action by using your tracker! It’s simple, really. You design your own plan - whether it is to spend for absolute needs, to start a savings plan, to pay down debt, or just to get a closer look at how the money in your home flows. You will use the month of February and the tracker to document your personal/family journey through the month. Then, on February 29, join in the celebration of completing this challenge with the Fort Knox “Military Saves Team”. Stop by Bldg. 67, DFMWR Stewart Training Center, from 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 PM for light refreshments and a second chance to win one of several participation prizes. We are looking forward to hearing about your “Leap Year” experience! ** Look for the Military Saves Team in January at the locations listed below and pick up your tracker. January 7-Patriot Commons - 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. January 15-PX Lobby - 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. January 21-BARR Memorial Library - 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. January 26- Community Information Exchange (CIE) at the Saber & Quill - 9:30 a.m. - 12 p.m. For more information, contact your ACS Financial Readiness Program at 502-624-5989. Find us on Facebook – Fort Knox Army Community Service or questions or more information, call (502) 624-5338.

The 2016 “Military Saves Campaign,” the Department of Defense has designated February 22-27, 2016 as “Military Saves Week.” As part of the larger nationwide “America Saves Campaign,” the “Military Saves Campaign” is conducted in cooperation with the Consumer Federation of America, and of the Department’s official financial readiness nonprofit partners.

Make Time to Cuddle By Jenelle Grewell

Who doesn’t enjoy cuddling? Especially in this cold month of January when you could use the extra warmth. Whether you cuddle with a Spouse, child, pet, friend or stuffed animal, cuddling has its benefits to your healthy and emotions. 1. Cuddling releases oxytocin: I am sure we have all heard of this hormone as this “feel good” endorphin and when you cuddle you get a huge dose of it. 2. Cuddling boosts your immune system: After learning this fact, I want to start cuddling up with my cat a bit more. Those feel good hormones we talked about earlier? When released, it makes you feel invincible and it also increases productions of other hormones that help fight infection. Basically, you feel way too good to ever get sick. A snuggle a day keeps the doctors away. 3. Cuddling relieves pain: Again, that awesome oxytocin comes into play. The hormone helps to decrease your levels of pain. The next time I have a headache, I better curl up on the couch with a few besties. 4. Cuddling helps deepen your relationship: Touch is very important in relationships. Try coming home from work or a stressful situation and cuddling with your partner for 10 minutes. This will not only give you small break from the stress and worry but will also help in deepening your relationship. Bonus: more oxytocin! 5. Cuddling helps women bond: I keep bringing up this oxytocin thing and for women it has an added bonus. It’s also released during childbirth and breastfeeding. For women, the chemical helps them relax and sleep easier which can be harder after giving birth. More sleep? Who doesn't want that? knox.armymwr.com

6. Cuddling reduces social anxiety: That wonderful hormone inspires positive thinking. Even snuggling as simplistic as a hug can help you relax socially. Think about walking into a gathering where you only know one person. If that person gives you a hug upon walking in, you are more likely to be social and outgoing during the event. This really makes sense to me when I think about all the times I have wanted to hold a friend’s hand whenever they take me to meet new people or to a new place.

However you choose to snuggle, make sure you do it often. That hormone oxytocin seems to have a lot of pretty great benefits. Cuddling has always been one of my favorite things to do but now it has also become a part of my health routine!

7. Cuddling reduces stress: All those feel-good feelings from oxytocin will help you to feel less stressed. This may seem obvious but it’s important to list because stress has so many negative effects on our body. Anything that helps reduce our stress levels should done more often. Ready to snuggle up in bed yet? 8. Cuddling lowers your risk of heart disease: With all the things that cause heart disease, it only makes sense to add in something to help lower it. Cuddling lowers heart disease because oxytocin makes you happier and as result your blood pressure goes down. Your heart doesn’t have to work as hard so you will be healthier. Give your heart some rest! 9. Cuddling doesn’t have a definition: As I mentioned before, you can cuddle with your child, pet, a stuffed animal and even yourself. You don’t have to have a romantic partner to enjoy the benefits of cuddling. Whenever I hang out with my video gaming friends, we often sit in a row on the couch, resting our heads on each other’s shoulders and keeping each other warm. You can cuddle with yourself by giving yourself a neck rub or curling up under some blankets.

NATIONAL MENTORING MONTH By Opportunity Knox Contributor

How true it is that the most successful and aspiring of world leaders embraced the presence of role models in their lives, as well as overall guidance and direction. The very presence of mentors and the knowledge they had to offer, contributed greatly to the success of many renowned performers or leaders. The time, energy, and effort that goes into being a mentor is invaluable to both yourself as a mentor, and that special someone you choose to guide and influence. Nowadays, mentoring is an important element in the lives of so many people, and a way of life that offers endless rewards - all of which is displayed and honored during National Mentoring Month. The primary role of a mentor is to foster insight, enhance growth, and present important knowledge that will directly affect the life of a chosen protégé. Though people typically have peers in their lives that support and guide them, specialized coaching and one-on-one guidance and nurturing that is necessary for the less experienced “student” to advance, comes neatly in the form of a dedicated mentor. A mentor is one who is both successful and well respected in life, and is willing to share their own personal knowledge and self-improvement techniques with those in search of that same level of success and respect.

Along with mentoring comes a plethora of benefits. First and foremost, mentoring allows you to enhance both the professional and personal growth of a young protégé. With your years of experience and all the knowledge you have acquired, how rewarding it is for you to challenge the less experienced mind to think and analyze in a completely new way. Though the young protégé has much to learn and all to gain, the mentor enjoys an array of positive benefits as well. Mentoring allows you the opportunity to strengthen and enhance your own coaching techniques and your special leadership skills by interacting with individuals with varied histories, personalities, and backgrounds. In addition, the role of the mentor is to lead by setting a good example. In doing so, you strive to perfect your own leadership skills and improve both your presentation and overall performance. Your very efforts are driven by your personal desire to succeed in improving the life of a young protégé and, therefore, you, as a mentor, experience levels of personal commitment and satisfaction as well. By immersing yourself in successful mentoring acts, you can then turn around and establish a mentoring program for your company of employment, or even your community. Newly established mentoring programs can then work to develop the minds and experience levels of young people whether in the workplace or in the community. The Army has recently established the Centralized Mentoring Program to help employees broaden skills and progress in their careers. The program matches qualified mentors with applicants throughout the organization worldwide. Mentors and applicants do not have to be located at the same garrison. This program allows experienced employees the opportunity to provide leadership and management skills to less experienced employees to in turn help further the Army’s reputation and presence going forward. Mentoring is not an act that should be taken lightly. It is an incredibly big decision to make, and one that will have a tremendous impact on not only your life, but on the life of the young protégé you elect to mentor. Certainly mentoring is a rewarding experience for everyone involved, and indeed the benefits are well worth all your time, energy, and efforts.
