The Zone Uncensored by Andrea Latimore GET AMPED-UP FOR THE ULTIMATE GAMING AND entertainment experience. That’s right! There is a new hot spot in town located right on Fort Campbell. The building formerly known as Froggy’s is now a high-energy entertainment and recreation facility called The Zone. Located at 3910 Indiana Avenue, The Zone has many elements for Soldiers to enjoy. You must be age 18 or older to enter. If video games are your thing, then you will be in gaming paradise. The Zone has nine video gaming systems to include PlayStation 3, Nintendo Wii, and Xbox 360. Each station is equipped with 55” LCD HDTV flat screen panels, 3-D goggles, and Turtle Beach headphones. In addition, all nine stations come with four ultimate gaming chairs. The chairs have built in speakers, a sound system, and vibration with AFM technology, which is designed to give hardcore gamers the audio experience that transfers the rumbling of a subwoofer into the back of the chair. There are over 70 of the hottest games available for check-out including: Alice, Dark Siders, Brink, Call of the Juarez Cartel, Gears of War, Call of Duty, Assassins Creed BrotherHood, Goldeneye 007, Halo, Duke Nukem Forever, Crysis 2 and Battlefield. You may also bring in your own games to play.
Enjoy watching the game instead of playing? The Zone has over 10 flat screen televisions around the walls of the building specifically for watching your favorite sporting games. To put the icing on the cake, there are five HD projector screens used for major games like the Super Bowl or NBA Playoffs and pay-per-view events like boxing or UFC fights. Each television has a small table for socializing and viewing of games. There is also FREE internet access for those who would like to bring their personal laptops and internet jukebox which has access to a host of songs from all different genres.
3
For those who like games that require movement, visit the arcade area of The Zone. Equipped with additional flat screen televisions, the arcade area has games including shooting and driving. For example, Ghost Squad Evolution emerges the gamer into several missions to save hostages. Also, available are four pool tables ($1 per game), great for tournaments. If you’re thinking “It can’t any get better than this,” think again! Nestled in the back of the building are two doors that look small to the eye, but behind them are two complete theaters. Each theater has a Blue-Ray DVD player supported with a kicking surround sound system. There are 12 leather recliners in each theater designed to give viewers the ultimate movie experience with built in butt-kickers and cup holders. Soldiers can choose from a variety of movies offered or bring in their own approved DVD. Movie watchers can even rent their own DVD from “Insta Flix” a machine similar to the popular movie rental device known as RedBox. Rentals are only a dollar for DVD per night and $1.49 for Blu-Ray DVD per night. In the middle of your game and want something fast to eat? Head over to the café area. The menu is loaded with a variety of quick bites like wings, jalapeño poppers and Irish nachos. There are also bigger meals for those that come with an appetite like pizzas, sandwiches, and hamburgers. In addition, the café offers a bar area with soft drinks and alcoholic beverages. You must be 21 years of age to purchase. Don’t worry about missing the game; the café is equipped with two additional flat screens . Experience quality entertainment offered on the weekends with different musical artists. All suggestions are welcome on entertainment choices.

Addicted to Apps? by Ryan Moeller
SOME OF US ARE OLD ENOUGH TO remember when there was no such thing as a “smartphone”. Before the invention of cell phones and the smartphone, telephones were only capable of making calls. Normally the phone was in one central location on the wall in your house and if you wanted privacy, you better hope that the phone cord was long enough to reach into the other room. The invention of the cell phone changed our world. In the beginning all cell phones were the size of a cinder block and were very awkward to carry around. As awkward and bulky as they were, we still used these enormous cell phones because they provided us the freedom to talk to whomever we wanted, wherever we wanted. Over the last 20 years we have seen cell phones evolve from the chunky style that we saw in the mid 90’s to the very sleek smartphones we have today. Today’s phones are our lifeline to the world. You cannot go into a store or restaurant without seeing people playing with their phones. We are a world obsessed with our phones, not to mention the hundreds of apps that provide endless hours of distraction and entertainment. Cell phones allow us to connect instantly with our friends, Family and coworkers simply by opening an app such as Facebook. I am always playing a game or shopping at the app store. Apps for our phones can be very useful, like the Redlaser app. I find myself using it often when shopping. All you do is activate the app, scan the barcode, and it tells you where you can find it cheaper, either online or locally. The weather apps are great as well. Accuweather and The Weather Channel have very accurate information. Sometimes I feel like I would have a shot at being a meteorologist because I am constantly checking the weather on my phone. They can also be huge killers of time. My favorite right now is the Top Gear app, and I justify my play time by only downloading the free apps.
With all these apps and different possibilities for games, news, music and movies we can very easily be engrossed with our phones. I know it happens to me from time to time, and I have to make a conscious effort to put my phone down. Not more than a minute goes by before I am thinking of something else I want to check out at the app store. I do have a problem though. How long do I keep an app on my phone that has not been used in a while? An app that was once a must have and great idea is not used anymore and just takes up space on my screen. I normally give it about a month, and if I do not use it anymore it gets deleted. Now I know what you are thinking, “you can just put unused apps into folders”, but I like to see all of my apps on the screen so I delete an app once I am done with it to keep everything easy to manage. There are many uses for our phones besides just picking it up to call someone, you can text, leave a voice message or get “face-time” using an app like Skype. I always think, “Is there an app for this or that?”, and then I look with great anticipation for that perfect app to be released. All kinds of possibilities are out there for you. However you choose to use your phone, be sure to disconnect from time to time and make real connections with friends and Family.

Tab into the Future by Joe Weekly SO HERE YOU ARE AGAIN, SITTING IN THE AIRPORT, ready to deploy once more, and have nothing to do. Unit restrictions kept you from packing a decent sized laptop into your carryon luggage, your MP3 player isn’t big enough to watch movies on let alone send email, or browse the internet effectively. Well, if this were two years ago, there would be no solution. However, this is the year of the tablet computer. With today’s competitive market, prices are reasonable and the options are vast. With some tablet computers selling for less than $200, a powerful multimedia solution is within everyone’s reach. All the available tablets sold have the ability to play music, display movies and surf the internet. Few items the size of a hard bound book can be so useful in allowing you to keep in touch with your Family. If you are searching for an easy to use tablet, look no further than the iPad® 2. Second generation enhancements include two cameras, a faster processor, and a sleeker profile. While typically the more expensive solution, the iPad is easily the most user friendly, a novice user will have no problems mastering this little gem. If you are looking to save a few bucks but are set on having something that is identical, opt for the first generation device. These are sold on Apple’s website as a “refurbished” device for a significant discount.

www.fortcampbellmwr.com If Apple products aren’t your style, have no fear. There are many other options out there that can get you in touch with your loved ones, or entertain you on that boring 12 hour flight. Another contender out there getting great reviews is the Acer Iconia Tab A500. With a 10.1” screen and integrated peripheral ports, this monster is ready to battle. Using the 1 GHz Nvidia Tegra 2 CPU and 1 GB of system memory, this tab is designed more like a standard PC. By using the built in SD slot, you can expand the storage capacity by another 32 GB. This device falls into the category known as “Web Tablet”. The unit runs the Android version 3.0 operating system. The benefit to this particular version is the fact it was written solely for tablets. This operating system takes full advantage of multi-touch screens, battery conservation, and quick boot times. The downfall to such software is application compatibility. Creating and transferring work related documents may become a chore. With no native Microsoft Office version being available to run on the Android system, you are left with third party applications to convert and manipulate files. However, with speedy boot-ups and excellent mobility, you may find the trade-off well worth it. If neither of those options are what you had in mind, maybe the Asus EeePad Transformer is more your style. The EeePad has the features of a netbook with a removable keyboard. Not only does it integrate the use of the keyboard when you need it, the keyboard also has a battery. The combined battery life is a whopping 16 hours when connected together. After a long day at the office, or a long day of playing, you can set it in the cradle of the keyboard and use it like a laptop. Capable of locking together and folding in half, EeePad resembles the traditional laptop platform. Going to hang out with your friends for a few hours and don’t want to lug around a computer? Just detach it from the keyboard and you now have a slim,
2
multitasking, tablet ready to serve up some entertainment. The keyboard portion can be purchased separately if you are on a tight budget. Just think of it as an extra battery, keyboard and touchpad, all in one. EeePad runs the same operating system as Acer, but with some Asus specific enhancements. The desktop is a live action battery meter. When active, it resembles a glass of water with two ice cubes floating at the surface. The height of this water is actually the battery level. As the battery level begins to decrease so does your water height. As you touch the screen, water bubbles respond to your finger. As if that wasn’t cool enough, the accelerometer causes the water to respond to the movement of the tablet. Tilt the unit left, and the water sloshes in that direction. It’s a new take on the boring old idea of a battery meter and static desktop. These are only a few of the options currently on the market. A quick search will provide you with hundreds of results. Here are some things to keep in mind when you’re looking for your new toy. What type of operating system do you want? Apple uses the iOS where the other tablets use Android. One thing that is very important about Android is the software version. Make sure you buy only version 3.0 and higher. This software was written specifically to take advantage of the tablet platform and the touchscreen they use. If the version is lower than 3.0, it may not be optimized for both the processor and the screen being used on your tablet. What kind of things will you be doing with this new device? If you are planning on using it to replace a desktop, you may want to save your money and wait for a few months. While these devices are powerful, and very mobile, they still don’t have the processing power of a true laptop or desktop. If you are looking to hook up to an LED/LCD TV, make sure you have HDMI outputs. If you want to watch movies on an external hard drive, a USB port is a must. The reduced size and increased capabilities allow you save that precious space in your rucksack when duty calls once more. Why pack all your books and publications with you when you can just download the digital version? No matter how many emails, books, and publications you have, they all weigh the same in the digital world! With webcams and Wi-Fi ability, tablets make keeping in touch with those you love easier than ever. It won’t be long before we will be looking at laptops and desktops in the same way we look at record players and cassette tapes.

Gym Gear, Gadgets & Gizmos by Charlene Mazur
ANYONE THAT GOES TO THE GYM KNOWS THAT GOOD PAIR of shoes, practical gym wear, a functional bag, a water bottle and a towel are basic essentials. But what else is there? There are some pretty neat little gadgets and gizmos available for anyone in the market. First, let's touch on the basics. A good pair of shoes is essential, but there are many that are sport specific. With the choices ranging from running to cross trainers, it can be difficult to choose. Ask the experts at the athletic shoe store and research online to get the best quality for your gym experience. Many shoes are foot specific and not every shoe will fit you properly. It’s best to always try them on; make sure you walk, jump and jog in the shoe at the store before making your purchase. Gym wear is also sport specific. Yoga wear may not be proper for strength training or running, so make sure you are comfortable in your attire for whatever your session at the gym. A functional bag should be big enough for your gear yet small enough for
a gym locker. A small compartment for dirty laundry is helpful for containing your used clothing, especially if you add a fabric softener sheet. Don’t forget the lock! The last thing you want to worry about is your items getting stolen as you are working out. The best water bottle is a personal choice, what's important is staying hydrated. Most gyms have towels available for hygiene purposes. The Speedo Sports Towel works well due to its super absorbent and quick drying material. This soft towel is ideal for poolside, after showering or for someone that sweats a bit more than normal. It’s compact, lightweight and easy to store. Two of my favorite gym gadgets and gizmos are the Garmin FR60 Fitness Watch and the Ironman Global Trainer-GPS watch. These watches are great multi-purpose tools as they allow you to log every mile and minute of your workout. The FR60 is a sleek fitness watch plus workout tool that tracks your time, heart rate and calories burned. You can also pair your FR60 with the wireless foot pod to track speed and distance, indoors or out. The best part is the FR60 can wirelessly send your workout data to your computer for later analysis. The Ironman displays your pace, speed, distance, and more in real time. It also measures location with altitude ascent and descent distance rates. Perfect for the outdoor routine and you can also see how tough or easy your trail is and adjust accordingly. Most of us use an MP3 player or a smartphone for music while working out. You want to make sure the ear buds you use are comfortable and reliable. Two of the top include the Sony Sports Headphones MDR-AS35W and Sennheiser/Adidas CX 680. The MDR-AS35W is an over the head design and water resistant. The headband may look retro, but they won’t budge and the sound quality is good, they also compact for easy storage. The CX 680 are sweat and water-resistant and have small plastic “wings” that secure the buds to the inner ridge of your ears so they won’t shake loose. This unyielding fit prevents background noise from seeping in, allowing you to focus on your workout. My all time favorite gadget is the BodyMedia FIT Mobile. This gadget helps with fitness body-monitoring wherever you go with a variety of mobile products for iPhone® and Android™ owners. Using free mobile apps, users can log food on the go and view snapshots of their most recent activity. Users may also use a Bluetooth®-powered armband, and can view their activity with near real-time caloric burn and activity data and create personalized workouts based upon caloric, activity or step goals. This gadget allows me to stay focused on my goals of healthy eating and maintaining my fitness routine. Being healthy is a lifestyle and not a temporary fix. Additionally, if your odometer is not accurate, you could be hurting the value of your vehicle for resale. The best thing about owning a programmer is the flexibility it gives you. If we’re going to be towing a boat, camper, etc., it only takes about 5 minutes to use one of the presets on the programmer to optimize your vehicle. Say I want to take my car, Pinkie, down to the track to run a 1/8 of a mile; I’m definitely going to need different settings than for daily driving! Prices of programmers can range from as low as $200 to as high as $700! But you can find a good quality new programmer on the market for around $300, and many times a used one will go for less than half that price. If you’re going to purchase one by Randi Nelson used, make sure the previous owner has reset their vehicle back to factory standards because many of these programmers can only be used to set one vehicle at a time. Air Assault Auto has a large variety of Superchip Cortex programmers in stock and Superchip Vivid programmers will be available soon. If they happen to be out of stock of the one you need, it can be ordered and available for pick up within three days.
Reprogram Your Ride MOST NEW VEHICLES ARE CONTROLLED BY A COMPUTER which is programmed at the factory for the average driver. Who is the average driver? The auto industry spends millions of dollars trying to figure that out and it comes down to the engineer who set the tuning for your vehicle. The only way to modify the tuning for your vehicle at home is with a vehicle programmer, which is a devise you install into your vehicle to modify or adjust factory settings. Don’t be confused; vehicle programmers are not only for performance vehicles! There are a variety of reasons you might want to modify your vehicle. Vehicle programmers can be used to set your vehicle up for towing, fuel economy, and for those aftermarket oversized rims and tires. If you’re making any aftermarket upgrades to your vehicle, a programmer is a must. Most programmers are designed to be easy to use, so you don’t have to be an engineer to fine tune your vehicle. What can be reprogrammed in your vehicle? Nearly any thing controlled by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). The PCM controls the engine’s timing and the air-fuel mixture going into your engine. Additionally the PCM controls the brakes, traction control, the odometer and speedometer settings, when an automatic vehicle shifts and a host of other functions. Your vehicle can be optimized to run off of low octane fuels (regular unleaded) or high octane (premium unleaded). While the cost of premium fuel is higher than regular, I have personally seen an increase of about four miles per gallon with the programmed change in one of our vehicles. The additional upfront cost for the gasoline definitely pays off in the long run with better gas mileage. Be warned though, without programming the vehicle for higher octane fuel, you’re just wasting money by pumping more expensive gas! When I drive across Fort Campbell, I can’t help but notice how many vehicles have oversized rims and tires these days. When upgrading rims and tires, the speedometer and odometer on the vehicle must be reprogrammed in order to give an accurate reading. The speedometer on your vehicle is programmed to give accurate readings for the stock sized rims and tires. When you’re no longer running stock, your speedometer no longer gives an accurate reading. The last thing any of us need is to get a speeding ticket due to an inaccurate speedometer. 13
