Halloween Happenings It’s the most wonderful time of the year! That’s right, I think October is the best time of the year because my favorite holiday, Halloween, is coming! I just love all the spooky decorations, the cheesy horror movies, the candy and the fun costumes. MWR has tons of events coming up this month but make sure you kick it off with Spooktacular on Friday, October 2. Since Halloween is my favorite holiday, I will have no problem spreading positivity, but take some advice from our intern David and make sure you spread some positivity of your own. It may be the fall season but that doesn’t mean you can’t still get splashin’! The MWR Aquatics program has Gardner Indoor Pool for all of your pool time needs even though it is no longer summer time. However you decide to spend your October, make sure you check out MWR for a scary good time!

Easy Homemade Costume Ideas By Jenelle Grewell

One of the reason Halloween is my favorite holiday is the fun costumes, As a cosplayer, someone who dresses in costume I love costumes and I try to do my best to make my own costumes. You could buy your children their Halloween costumes but you could also make them a unique outfit at home. All of these ideas are very easy, fun and adorable! Plus, who doesn’t love being crafty? None of these costume ideas require sewing; you will just need a hot glue gun! These ideas and more can be found on parenting.com under “35+ Easy Homemade Halloween Costumes for Kids”.

Spaghetti and Meatballs: What you will need: red checkered fabric, yarn, sturdy paper plate, Styrofoam balls, brown paint, red paint and a small pan. 1. Cut a hole in the center of a red-checkered tablecloth or red-checkered fabric so it can worn like a poncho. 2. Cut thick off white yarn into pieces the length of spaghetti. Use hot glue and glue them into swirls on a sturdy paper plate. 3. Paint eight Styrofoam balls with brown acrylic paint to make your meatballs. Once dry, glue some of the meatballs onto the spaghetti. 4. Mix brown and red paint to create paint the color of spaghetti sauce. Drop over spaghetti and meatballs and smear some on the side of a small pan. 5. Glue plate to front of tablecloth. 6. Glue remaining meatballs on table cloth wherever you want. 7. Glue some spaghetti yard strands to the pan. Place pan on top of child’s head like a hat. You can tie the spaghetti strands under the chin to help keep the pan on your child’s head.

Weather Balloon Person Costume You will need: a cardboard box, large helium balloon, dowels, fabric glue, burlap, batting, rope, jute twine, an extra-large needle, foam weather stripping, tape, and, if you want, a toy barometer, a lab coat, a clipboard and binoculars.

1. Make a basket using a 14” by 12” cardboard box and fold in top flaps of box and tape down. Cut off bottom flaps. 2. Glue weather stripping around the top edge of the box. 3. Cover box with burlap, fold ends over the top and bottom edge of the box and secure with glue. Thread needle with jute twine and wrap around top edge of box. 4. To make the weight bags that go with a weather balloon: cut 6” by 12” pieces of burlap. Layer two together and glue three edges closed. Let dry and stuff bags with batting. Tie piece of twine around top and glue to corners of rim. 5. To make straps for your child to wear basket: position box so widest side is facing you and make holes at top front and back corner with scissors. From side, pull piece of rope through each front hole of the basket and knot. Crisscross rope and pull through back holes. Knot each end at desired length. 6. Tie dowels together at top with some twine and leave a tail. Glue bottom of each dowel to each back corner of box. Attach balloon to twine.

Raining Cats and Dogs Costume: What you will need: a child-size clear umbrella, black sticky felt, black poster board, fabric pencil, gray thread and a needle. 1. Using the black poster board, cut 8 dog and 8 cat silhouettes about 2” or 3” high. Trace shapes onto felt with pencil and cut out 16 cats and dogs. 2. Glue a piece of 4”or 5” thread on each paper cutout and then use them to back corresponding felt silhouettes. Leave a 2” tail at the top. 3. Tie animals umbrella spokes, alternating between cats and dogs. Glue ends to secure to spokes. Glue remaining 16 felt animals to umbrella. 4. Create a larger cat or dog silhouette from felt and back it with poster. Secure to top point of umbrella.

80’s Rocker: What you will need: band logo, plain black shirt, rocker wig and iron-on sheet of paper.

1. Find an image or logo of an 80’s band or any band your child wants to represent. Print onto a sheet of iron-on printer paper specifically for dark fabrics. Iron onto to front of plain black shirt. 2. Wear a rocker wig, jeans and shirt. You can accessorize with black nail polish, black eyeliner, plastic-cord necklace and even a blow up plastic guitar. Of course, you can always go store bought - and I wouldn’t blame you if you did. Just shop around first for good prices and the best made version of each costume. I know your child will only wear it once before they outgrow it, but you don’t want something that will fall apart within five minutes of trickor-treating! Whenever I buy something for a costume, I always look at customer reviews for the product. People are always willing to share information if something isn’t right with the merchandise. Another option is a closet costume. A closet costume is something that you are able to put together by things you would find is your closet. A good example is a cat costume. A black pair of leggings, a long black shirt topped with cat ears, tail and whiskers make an easy costume to put together. If you have a good idea for a closet cosplay but are missing a few crucial pieces of clothing, stop by the Fort Campbell Spouse’s Club Thrift Store for some cheap clothing items. You might even find some items you can turn into props for your costume or into some Halloween decorations. One thing I have learned from dressing up is that is doesn’t really matter what you wear as long as you having fun! No matter what your child or you decide to dress up as for this Halloween, remember to have a great time while doing it!


Bubble Bath What you will need: inflatable bath tub for infant, wide ribbon, 15 white balloons and bath poufs.

1. Cut a hole in the bottom of an inflatable baby bathtub. Something with a aquatic animal shape for added cuteness. Leave at least two inches for a rim. 2. On the bottom rim, punch two holes near the front and back. 3. Make suspenders from wide ribbon. Measure your child from shoulder to waist and multiply by two and cut two lengths of ribbon to the size you measured.

4. Thread this ribbon through the holes and tie a knot underneath to secure. Your child should be able to step through the hole and put the suspenders on their shoulders to wear the inflatable around their waist. 5. Blow up 15 white balloons and attach to inside of tub and outside with double-sided tape to look like the bubbles are overflowing. 6. Accessorize with bath poufs as hair pieces.

Be A Warrior with the Spartan Race Do you want to challenge yourself and do something you never thought you could do? If the answer is yes, then the Spartan Race is for you. The Spartan Race is being held here at Fort Campbell on Saturday, October 24. The Spartan Race can be completed as an individual or as a team. The course is at least three miles long with over 20 obstacles that will have you running, jumping, climbing, and crawling. Some obstacles you may pass through with ease and others may be an uphill battle. If you are unable to complete an obstacle, you are required to complete the penalty burpees within the designated area that is monitored by officials. For each race location, the obstacles will be different. Spartan Race coordinators only reveal a few obstacles before the race. Here are a few of the obstacles you may face: 1. Atlas Carry – This will be a large stone which you have to carry from one flag to another and then do five burpees. 2. Barbed Wire Crawl - Crawl or roll under barbed wire in the mud. 3. Bucket Brigade - Fill bucket up with gravel rocks and carry along route until you reach a designated location.

10. Tire Drag - Pull the tire out of the pit with a rope attached until the tire crosses a certain point. 11. Traverse Wall - Traverse the wall using foot and hand holds. 12. Tyrolean Traverse – Using a rope, cross over the water to the other side without touching the water. 13. Wall Jump - Simple as it sounds, you will climb or jump over each wall.

4. Fire Jump - Just like it sounds, you will be jumping fire pits. 5. Hercules Hoist - Pull rope to raise the weight until the knot reaches the top. 6. Monkey Net – Cross the net using only your hands and ring the bell on the other side. 7. Over Under Through - Over the first wall, under the second and through the last wall. 8. Rope Climb – Climb the rope to the top and ring the bell. 9. Spear Throw - One attempt to throw a spear and have it stick to the target.

Spooktacular Monster Mash

All fitness levels and abilities can take participate in this race. Once you have conquered all the obstacles and crossed the finish line, you will have earned a T-shirt, professional photo, a beer, a finisher medal and the feeling of accomplishment that you have conquered the Spartan Race. There is also a course for children to run that is less than a mile. Register at Spartan.com and use the code CAMPBELL to receive 20 percent off ticket purchase. On race day, we recommend that you show up an hour and a half before your start time. For the race you will need your ID, waiver, bib number, towel and extra clothes along with a water source. The Spartan Race is an alternative Eagle Challenge Fitness Tour event.

Offers Halloween Thrills for the Whole Family

By Stella Mayfair October at MWR has so many fun Halloween events to attend! We have made it easy for you with the Spooktacular Monster Mash. The Spooktacular Monster Mash will kick off the Halloween season at MWR on Saturday, October 2 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. The event will feature face painters, a photo booth, a DJ, a scavenger hunt, Halloween themed treats and goodies and a sensory room. The sensory room will put participants in a dark room where they touch various things that are meant to be “gross”. Peeled grapes will simulate eye balls and spaghetti in gelatin will represent guts. There is going to be a lot more yucky things in the sensory room but you’ll just have to feel it for yourself. Tickets for the event are only $5 and children ages 4 and under are free, however this event is recommended for ages 5 and up. “Roses are red, violets are blue. Sugar is sweet, and so are you.” These sentences are surely a few of the most famous lines of romantic poetry in the world. Although these words may seem rather juvenile, they will surely put a smile on your face.

Poetry has a way of capturing the emotions of an author through a series of rhythmic words and tones. Readers are immediately cast into a world that is set in emotions and rhyme. You do not have to be a poet in order to be enchanted by poems. National Poetry Day will be observed on Thursday, October 8. This will mark the 21st year where all poets and poetry lovers unite to express their love for this rhythmical form of art. Are you interested in reading poetry from a diverse selection of poets? Visit the Robert F. Sink Memorial Library and allow yourself to be transported into literary oasis. Allow Dr. Maya Angelou to show you how to be “Phenomenal.” Give your funny

bone a much needed tickle by laughing out loud with Shel Silverstein. Edgar Allan Poe knows how to send a shiver up your spine. Regardless of the genre of poetry that peaks your interest, the Robert F. Sink Memorial Library located at 38 Screaming Eagle Blvd can satisfy your poetic thirst. Poems are diverse, ranging from haikus to sonnets to free verses. The beautiful thing about poetry is that there is not a right or a wrong way to write a piece. Poets have the opportunity to take their readers onto a magical ride that is set only in their imaginations. Poetry is about emotion, passion, and expression. If you have these key elements in place, you will produce a magnificent work of art that you can be proud of. On National Poetry Day, dedicate some time to craft a piece of poetry that speaks to you. You can write about anything that your heart desires. The key is that you at least begin the writing process. You never know what amazing piece of poetry you can create until you try. And most importantly, you should have fun!

With the swim season winding down and the fall approaching quickly, many may wonder what the Fort Campbell MWR Aquatics program has to offer during winter. The good news is that the indoor pools do not ice over during the cold months. In fact, this can be one of the best times to enjoy the water. The outdoor pools may be closed for the season but Gardner Indoor Pool is open and ready for you to jump on in! Our new Aquatics Director, Summer Broach, has plans to ensure the summer fun never ends! Summer recently joined the Fort Campbell

MWR team and she brings plenty of experience and ideas from Pine Bluff, Arkansas on how to maximize the pool resources. She is revamping several programs that will provide opportunities for everyone. Her hope is to update the existing programs and cater the resources to the requirements needed by our military community with the goal to make the new program the best one yet! Whether your intent is to increase physical fitness, reduce stress, improve your swimming skills, or just take time to relax, Summer has the plan for you, so make sure you drop by

Gardner Indoor Pool. Her desire is to provide a variety of programming that will support the Fort Campbell community goals. One of the biggest challenges with any program is, of course, trying to keep individuals interested. Don’t fear because Summer Broach is here and has plans to keep all her patrons interested in coming back. Summer plans to gear the program towards Soldiers as well as their Families by encompassing both team sports, such as water polo, and providing a facility where children can play safely. The pool will also be available


for early morning and late evening missions while regular programs such as morning aerobics, military lap swim and recreational swim will continue. For those individuals looking for a place to hold a party, the pool is an excellent location even during the winter months. Special events for holidays are also being planned and suggestions are always welcome! Please visit www.ice.disa.mil and let us know what you want to see at Gardner this fall and winter. With all these great events on the horizon, you're probably thinking, “What if I can't swim?” Don’t worry about that either! This fall, lessons for all ages and swimming capabilities will be offered at a variety of times and days to fit your schedule. Whether you are a beginner or an advanced swimmer, we have something for you! Each course will consist of eight classes of 45 minutes each. Now you're asking, “Okay but how much will this cost?” Well, save your arm and your leg, because the cost is only $60 for group sessions and $15 for private sessions. Lessons for active duty personnel will be free of charge. Just think, once your lessons are complete, you can then enjoy many hours of fun in the water with your Family creating memories, knowing that you have taken one big step towards staying safe. Summer stated, “My goal

with our swim lessons is for the program to save lives. My staff and I will work hard to teach everyone, children and adults, to swim safely.” With this new fun season approaching (come on, who doesn’t love the fall?) MWR Aquatics hopes to offer some fun entertainment for our Families in town. Keep your children active for our “Terrifying Tri” and don’t feel spooked to participate. Our awesome youth triathlon will be offered on Saturday, October 31 at Gardner Indoor Pool, just in time for the spookiest holiday of the year! The triathlon welcomes all ages and swim levels. So don’t be frightened by this event! The Aquatics team is excited to welcome all swim levels and can’t wait to see you and your Family at this event. Lifeguard and Water Safety Instructor Jean Negron says the following “I have witnessed a lot of triathlons before that seemed daunting, but I hope this will be the spookiest one yet.” Be prepared for fun Halloween decorations, face

painting, inflatables, games and spooky Halloween T-shirts! If that wasn’t enough, make sure and stop by for our first ever aquatics pumpkin patch in November! This will definitely be a fun season for the Aquatics team so make sure and stay tuned. You don’t want to miss it! Another October. You know what that means - people dressing us as ghouls, pumpkin patches, costume parties and gorging on delicious candy, with many cavities to come. Another year to celebrate the traditional Halloween in all its spooky glory on Saturday, October 31. Then again, why should October be all about being scared? Why can't it also be about smiling? Yes, I said it … smiling! On Friday, October 2 you have the opportunity to be positive, give good vibes, be courteous to others and give your best grin, because that day celebrates World Wide Smile Day. What is World Wide Smile Day? It is just as it sounds, a day of the year set aside for smiling. It was initiated in 1999 by Harvey Ball, a commercial artist from Worcester, Massachusetts. You may know him as the originator of the Yellow Smiley Face, which was created in 1963. No, Forrest Gump had nothing to do with that. Since 1999, the day has been celebrated every first Friday of October. After Ball's death in 2001, the Harvey Ball World Wide Smile Foundation was created to honor him and continue his legacy. Their slogan: improving the world, one smile at a time.

To this day, the Foundation is the official sponsor for World Wide Smile Day. What puts a smile on your face? Is it your accomplishments; your talents; your Family; your significant other; or simply being alive? Jim McCall, who works in management at the Starbucks in the Village Commons at Hammond Heights and Christian Drouillard, an 88M Soldier, were happy to express what makes them smile. MWR: What makes you smile/ happy? McCall: Other people that are happy. When they're in a good mood then they put you in good mood. Drouillard: Seeing other people happy and enjoying their lives, it's what makes me happy. Seeing other people's happiness seems just enough to put McCall and Drouillard in a positive mood. Want to know how to be more positive? Here are “5 Ways to Give off Positive Energy”, taken from www.happsters.com:


1. Make it a point to smile, engage, and genuinely care what others say. By being friendly, compassionate and thoughtful, you are able to give off positive energy and make others feel good. 2. GO COMMANDO GEARS UP FOR 5TH YEAR By Stella Mayfair

Set a goal and get ready for Saturday, October17 when Clarksville will host the Go Commando Half Marathon, 10K, 5K and Fun Run. With multiple distances from which to choose, this race is perfect for anyone wanting to run. The Go Commando event started in 2011 as a celebration for the troops at Fort

Campbell. The race takes place on the banks of Cumberland River and goes through the beautiful and historic downtown Clarksville. One new and exciting thing about this year’s race is cash prizes being awarded to the top three finishers in the half marathon, 10K and 5K. The biggest prize is $500 for the first place half marathon winner. If reaching a new personal goal isn’t motivation enough, the possibility of winning money should definitely help! The Fun Run is one mile and is for participants 10-years old and under. Parents are welcome to run along with their children, but they will not receive a medal. After you run, the fun isn’t over. Go to Liberty Park for the Post Race Party featuring yummy food, beverages and a great time to unwind after the race.

This event also ties into a two day Health and Fitness Expo held on Friday, October 16 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday, October 17 from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. This free event will feature vendors offering the latest fitness, health and wellness products.
