Pumpkin carving is a Halloween tradition, but it can be a little tricky for some. Getting your designs and carving ideas to successfully transfer onto your pumpkin is frustrating if you are unaware of the proper ways to do it. Who wants to spend hours on your project just for it to turn into a DIY fail? Before you pick up the knife this year, take a look at these tips and tricks on ways to carve the perfect jack-o-lantern. Pick the Perfect One It all starts at the patch or the grocery store. To have a great design, you need to have the right base. First, make sure your pumpkin does not have any soft spots or bruises. Avoid the ones with deep ridges. These deep ridges can make carving exceedingly difficult. The smoother the pumpkin the better. Cut from the Bottom Do you usually cut your pumpkin open from the top, and deal with the stem falling into the center of your pumpkin as it begins to wilt? To avoid this, cut your pumpkin open from the bottom. There will be no obvious hole or carving cuts. Scoop it all Out When you begin carving your pumpkin, you have to do more than just scoop out the seeds. The thick and gummy inside walls will also need to be thinned out as well. When the walls are thin, you will be able to easily get your knife through the outside shell. Stores sell special scraping tools that will assist in speeding up this process. Avoid Free handing Unless you are already an artistic person, free handing your pumpkin’s design can get a little difficult. One wrong move and your entire pumpkin could be toast. Grab a pencil or marker and dot out your design so you will know exactly where to cut. Shave it Down Instead of shoving your knife all the way through and taking out massive chunks of your pumpkin’s surface area, opt for shaving out areas instead. It creates a cool 3D look, and allows you to have more creative design ideas. Set Aside Enough Time Rushing through your carving session can end in a mess. When wanting to create cool pumpkins, be prepared for it to be an all evening thing. Dedicating 3-4 hours on your craving fest will help you feel not as frantic when completing this activity.
7
Keep it Fresh Spreading a little bit of petroleum jelly on your cut edges can help lock in the moisture to prevent premature shriveling of your pumpkin.

You cannot have Halloween without some good old-fashioned horror flicks and books. Diving into the horror genre is sure to get you into that spooky spirit. That is why we are here to share with you some amazing movies and books that are sure to give you the chills.
Hush - Found on Netflix
MOVIES
This film follows the story of Maddie. She is deaf and mute, which provides an added twist to the plotline of surviving an obsessed killer. What really ups the tension throughout the film is that the audiences can hear everything the killer says, even though Maddie cannot.
1BR - Found on Netflix Sarah moves into an L.A. apartment complex and is surprised to see that people care about their neighbors. She quickly learns that is actually not the case. About 45 minutes into the film, audiences reach the natural end point of most horror movies about cults. But, this film keeps going. Viewers receive real-life details culled from ex-members’ accounts of life in groups like Scientology and NXIVM. Before I Wake - Found on Netflix Before I Wake follows a married couple, Jessie and Mark as they try to move on after their son’s death by taking in an 8-year-old orphan. As the new foster parents quickly find out that the child possesses a dangerous supernatural power. When he falls asleep, his dreams haunt the house The Blackcoat’s Daughter - Found on Netflix If you want to have constant chills down your spine, and goosebumps every few minutes, then this is the movie for you. Most of this Blackcoat’s Daughter takes place at a fictional, religious boarding school for girls over a long holiday weekend break. The unsettling darkened and deserted dormitories is only the beginning of the creepy experiences that follow these girls. The Cabin in the Woods - Found on Hulu This movie is a little unique as it was a way for the producers to call out the stereotypical horror movie about dumb college students traveling out to creepy cabins alone. Kicker is, even though it is funny and entertaining, it is also genuinely scary as well. It will have you on a roller coaster of emotions. Tragedy Girls - Found on Hulu Tragedy Girls follows two girls who have a desire to get famous on social media and are willing to do anything to achieve those goals. Yes, that even means kidnapping a known serial killer who then 9 teaches them how to conduct their own famous killing sprees.
A Quiet Place - Found on Hulu This film is set in a world overrun by alien creatures. They are unique by having the ability to only hunt by sound. A Quiet Place follows a family trying to survive in the silence and navigate this new world. The kicker is the mother’s pregnant. Silent birth? Yeah, that doesn’t happen.
The Wretched - Found on Hulu A defiant teenage boy, struggling with his parent’s imminent divorce, faces off with an old thousand year old witch who has possessed the neighbor next door.
The Hollow Ones “A horrific crime that defies explanation, a rookie FBI agent in uncharted, otherworldly territory, and an extraordinary hero for the ages. Rookie FBI agent Odessa Hardwicke’s life is derailed when she’s forced to turn her gun on her partner, who turns suddenly, inexplicably violent while apprehending a rampaging murderer. The shooting, justified by self-defence, shakes Odessa to her core and she is placed on desk leave pending a full investigation. But what haunts Odessa is the shadowy presence she saw fleeing her partner’s body after his death.” The Living Dead “It begins with one body. A pair of medical examiners find themselves facing a dead man who won’t stay dead. It spreads quickly. In a Midwestern trailer park, an African American teenage girl and a Muslim immigrant battle newly-risen friends and family. On a US aircraft carrier, living sailors hide from dead ones while a fanatic preaches the gospel of a new religion of death. At a cable news station, a surviving anchor keeps broadcasting, not knowing if anyone is watching, while his undead colleagues try to devour him.” The Deep “This is the only way to explain the series of misfortunes that have plagued the passengers of the ship from the moment they set sail: mysterious disappearances, sudden deaths. Now suspended in an eerie, unsettling twilight zone during the four days of the liner’s illustrious maiden voyage, a number of the passengers, including millionaires Madeleine Astor and Benjamin Guggenheim, the maid Annie Hebbley and Mark Fletcher – are convinced that something sinister is going on . . . And then, as the world knows, disaster strikes.”
Malorie
BOOKS
“The much-anticipated Bird Box sequel. In the seventeen years since the ‘creatures’ appeared, many people have broken that rule. Many have looked. Many have lost their minds, their lives, their loved ones. In that time, Malorie has raised her two children – Olympia and Tom – on the run or in hiding. Now nearly teenagers, survival is no longer enough. They want freedom. When a census-taker stops by their refuge, he is not welcome. But he leaves a list of names – of survivors building a future beyond the darkness – and on that list are two names Malorie knows. Two names for whom she’ll break every rule, and take her children across the wilderness, in the hope of becoming a family again.” The Boatman’s Daughter “A “lush nightmare” of a supernatural thriller about a young woman facing down ancient forces in the depths of the bayou. Ever since her father was killed when she was just a child, Miranda Crabtree has kept her head down and her eyes up, ferrying contraband for a mad preacher and his declining band of followers to make ends meet and to protect an old witch and a secret child from harm. But dark forces are at work in the bayou, both human and supernatural, conspiring to disrupt the rhythms of Miranda’s peculiar and precarious life. And when the preacher makes an unthinkable demand, it sets Miranda on a desperate, dangerous path, forcing her to consider what she is willing to sacrifice to keep her loved ones safe.” 10

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. The dedicated month is used as an annual campaign to increase awareness of the disease. The CDC states that apart from skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer among American women. Every year, more than 245,000 women get breast cancer in the United States, and more than 40,000 women lose their battle to the disease. Spreading awareness about this common cancer is crucial, and early detection can save lives. This cancer does not discriminate. Even though it is most commonly found in women who are 50 years old or older, breast cancer also affects younger women. It was reported that 10% of all new cases in the US are found in women younger than 45 years of age. To help spread awareness of this disease, I had the honor of interviewing 2-time Grammy nominated singer and breast cancer survivor, Sheri Easter. What were the first signs and symptoms for you? “I found a lump and contacted my OB/GYN who set me up with the surgeon and a biopsy. Other than the lump, there were no symptoms.” What helped you the most when you were going through treatment? “My faith in God, my husband who never left my side, my children and my friends who kept me encouraged and continually prayed for me. I also read everything I could get my hands on, the knowledge made me feel stronger.” What piece of advice would you give someone that just got diagnosed with breast cancer? “Cancer is aggressive, be as aggressive in your fight. Eat as nutritionally sound as possible. Get plenty of rest and allow your body to heal. Most of all, let your family and friends take care of you. As my doctor said, women nowadays do not have to die from breast cancer with all of the treatments and options available, so be encouraged, you’re so much stronger than you think.” What would you like women of all ages to know about breast cancer? “It can happen to anyone. Be proactive by getting your annual checkups, mammograms if you have a history of breast cancer in your family, and self-checks monthly.” Encourage all your loved ones to get their annual checkup and self-examine regularly. Use the month of October to personally spread awareness about this disease. Your encouragement and persistence of this cause could very well save a life. As Sheri stated, it can happen to anyone. Be proactive and get checked out. 21
Comfort food is a dish that holds a special place in all of our hearts. It is what we turn to after a long stressful weak at work, when the weather outside is frightful, or when we have been down on our luck. It brings a sense of peace and comfort as soon as that first spoonful hits the taste buds. Everyone’s go-to comfort food dish is different, and that is what can be so interesting. So, we wanted to know “What is your comfort food?” and this is what our readers had to say. “Mine is a huge slice of red velvet cake. My Grandmother used to make the best red velvet cakes, and that first bite always makes me think of her.” Heather from North Carolina I think my comfort food dish has to be chicken and dumplings. It is just so warm and filling. It literally feels like you are getting a hug from the inside out. It is amazing.” Callie from Georgia “A big juicy steak. Hands down. Growing up, we only got steak on special occasions. Now, I feel special whenever I get a big steak.” Sarah from Oklahoma “Hmm, this is a hard one. I would say a huge bowl of chili. Especially if it is the weather that is making my mood gloomy.” Leigha from Kentucky “Pizza. All the pizza. That is it. Give me a gigantic pizza and I am all smiles” Fiona from California “Lasagna is my favorite comfort food. It makes me oddly happy. Reminds me of home.” Bella from Florida “Shrimp and Grits. If you haven’t had it before, you have to try it.” Jessa from South Carolina “Three words. Chicken Pot Pie. The bigger the better.” Layla from Alabama “When I read this, I thought of country fried steak. So I guess that has to be mine!” Fae from Virginia “Loaded cheese fries with all of the toppings.” Brooklyn from Illinois 23

Double Chocolate Orange Cream Cheese Brownies by OneCreativeMommy.com
Brownie layer: 1 box Krusteaz Gluten Free Double Chocolate Brownie Mix • 1⁄3 cup water 1 ⁄3 cup vegetable oil • 1 egg Orange Cream Cheese layer: 4 oz cream cheese • 1 egg white • 1⁄4 cup sugar 2 tsp gluten free flour blend 1 ⁄2 tsp vanilla • zest from one medium orange Lightly grease your 8 x 8 baking dish, and preheat oven to 325°. Prepare brownies according to package directions, and pour into baking dish. Set aside. Using an electric mixer, beat cream cheese orange zest, and sugar until blended. Add egg white, flour and vanilla, and blend until smooth. Carefully pour cream cheese mixture over the brownies and smooth to cover the entire top. Run a knife through the layers to marble. You can make a pretty design, or just swirl the knife around. Bake 48-52 minutes. (Add 5 minutes to bake time if using a glass dish.) Fresh Raspberry Sauce 2 cups fresh or frozen raspberries (slightly thaw if frozen) • 2 T sugar • 1⁄2 T lemon juice fresh raspberries for garnish (optional) In high speed blender, layer berries, sugar and lemon juice and blend until smooth. Pour sauce through a fine mesh sieve and discard the seeds. (If you want to skip this step, you can use the soup button on the blender. It will pulverize the seeds, but it will also cook the sauce. That will change the flavor–making it more of a syrup than a sauce.) Drizzle sauce over brownies and garnish with fresh raspberries to serve. 24

It may still only be October, but Christmas will be here before we know it. Many families do not start their holiday shopping until mid-November, but things may need to change this year due to the current state of the country. As you may have noticed, popular presents and gifts are a little bit harder to come by lately. Due to the global pandemic, stores across the globe have lower stock than normal. Large manufacturers had to shut down their factories, which has led to a shortage of a variety of items. For example, getting your hands on a Nintendo Switch has been a nightmare for gamers nationwide. The Japanese based company had to halt production due to Covid-19, and American stores were hit by the supply shortage. Unfortunately, this has been the case for hundreds of companies, which could really put a damper on the holiday shopping season. Gift-givers also need to prepare for extended shipping times, and the possibility of changes to usual Black Friday routines. If you have ordered anything online during this pandemic, you have possibly faced extended shipping times, lost packages, and other issues. It has been revealed that online order volumes have been higher the last few months than the average Christmas season. Shipping manufacturers were not prepared for this massive influx, and this has caused delays for all. It can be predicted that these issues may continue and even worsen this December. For all of the Black Friday shoppers out there, you will want to keep an eye on possible capacity limits, change of store hours, and other major changes to your usual nightly adventure. Depending on this one day to knock out most of your holiday shopping could turn out to be an issue this year. Using the month of October to slowly gather your holiday exchanges is something that we can not recommend enough.
Giving yourself an extra month to plan and be prepared for every toss and turn you may face this Christmas may help relieve some unnecessary stress. You can also catch a few great money-saving deals in the process.

Thankfully, the Fort Campbell area does not face too harsh of a winter. We may get a few inches of snow, and freezing rain here and there, but winters tend to be mild. With this being said, it is still important to prepare your home for the colder temperatures to come. You do not want to be unprepared when the first freezing temperature hits. Check Your Door Seals If you can see light coming through your door frame, then it is time to update your weather seal. Any small gap or tear in the seal can allow the cold air to sneak into your home. Not only will it cause a draft near your entry ways, but it can also cause your heating bill to rise. Clean Out Your Gutters Due to Fall causing all the trees to shed their leaves, many homes face the issue of clogged gutters. To avoid being out in the harsh climate, clean out your gutters before the temperatures drop too drastically. Check Your HVAC System You do not want to turn on your heat to discover it not functioning properly when you need it. If your system has not been serviced in a while, go ahead and call a technician. They can get your appointment scheduled for a routine maintenance check, and you will not be hit with a surprise when the temperature starts to plummet. Test Out Your Fire Detectors Did you know that winter is the time of the year that most house fires occur? Between the blasting furnace, fireplace burning, or your favorite candle flickering, you want to keep your family safe incase a fire was to break out. Protect Your Patio Furniture Do you have a nice hammock, umbrella chair set, or even a grill currently sitting on your back patio? If so, now is the time to purchase some covers for them. This will protect them from the weather to come, and it will keep them nice and pristine for next Spring. Scope Out Your Attic To avoid your attic becoming a critter hotel, check out the base of your structure to locate any openings. Even the smallest ones can attract animals such as squirrels, rats, birds, and bats. Remember, they are trying to find a warm place to stay, and your attic would be paradise for them. 33
