When fall rolls around each year, there’s a few things many people look forward to: cool weather, pumpkin-flavored everything and scares. The last of these is tricky though. There’s a ton of amazing places to visit in the area around Fort Campbell that put on a terrifying show in any one of the haunted houses. But what about some real scares? Places with bone-chilling history that you can go see for yourself across the Volunteer and Bluegrass states and beyond? Here are some of the best places that are sure to make you double and triple check your closet for monsters.

Prospect Hill Bed & Breakfast When a home is almost 130 years old, it’s bound to have a few squeaky floorboards, a water leak here and there and the ghosts of its 19th-century owners wandering about. This Mountain City, Tennessee, bed and breakfast was originally built in 1889, and if you’ve got keen senses you might be able to smell peanut butter muffins cooking at 2:30 am or rose perfume in the hallway. This might be because it was common for homes to host visitations in the early 20th century – a casket would easily fit through the 42-inch wide front door – but you’ll just have to come see the apparitions for yourself. Union Station Hotel Built in 1899, this railroad station was converted into a hotel in 1986. It is beautiful and well known throughout the city of Nashville, but it has a spooky tale behind it. During World War II, 20-year-old Abigail said goodbye to her beau at Union Station before he left for France. While standing on the platform, she promised she would be waiting for him in the same spot when the war was over. After the war, she returned to the station only to find out that he had been killed while in Europe. Abigail was so heartbroken that she threw herself in front of a moving train. It is said that a man has been seen on the track who is the ghost of the U.S. soldier, who returned to the terminal to find Abigail. Also, guests staying in room 711 claim they have heard strange noises such as phones ringing, lights flickering and stomping on the roof - as if someone is walking on the top floor. The catch is, room 711 is the top floor. It was once the building’s attic, but when the hotel was being built, it was transformed into additional rooms. Waverly Hills Sanatorium “Once you went to Waverly Hills, you became a permanent resident.” And for good reason. As one of the most high-tech tuberculosis hospitals of its day, patients at the Waverly Hills Sanatorium were intrinsically unable to live a normal life alongside the public with their dangerous disease. After a TB vaccine was discovered in 1961 leaving the hospital vacant, the Louisville sanatorium could accommodate more than 400 patients. After reopening as a geriatric facility a year later, the building sat empty from 1981 until the sanatorium was purchased by the Waverly Hills Historical Society to restore the sanatorium. Tours are given from March to August, on Friday and Saturday nights, and the sanatorium hosts a haunted house each year from Sept. 21, through Oct. 27, on every Friday and Saturday night. McPike Mansion The current owners of the McPike Mansion, Sharyn and George Luedke, said they intended to turn the home into a bed and breakfast when they purchased it in 1994. That was before they found out it was haunted. Just a year shy of 150 years old, the home was originally built for horticulturist Henry McPike in 1869. The McPikes lived in the home until 1936, at which point it changed owners multiple times before becoming unoccupied from 1950 until the Luedkes came along in 1994. Photos inside the mansion sometimes reveal strange orbs invisible to the naked eye, and some psychics and mediums experience presences they believe to be the original McPike family. Tours are given on Saturdays from April through September, and Ghostly Tours are given on Fridays and Saturdays from Oct. 5, through Nov. 3. Carnton Plantation The south is littered with Confederate battle sites. From the Battles of Fort Sumter to Fort Donelson, many soldiers on both sides died during the war. But there’s one particular site where close to 9,500 soldiers were killed and those injured in the conflict were taken to Carnton Plantation, which served as a makeshift field hospital for the battle. The Franklin, Tennessee, plantation hosted “hundreds” of wounded, as one eyewitness wrote, and the yard was filled just as full as the home. Visitors report seeing ghosts of Confederate soldiers on the grounds, and some have claimed to see the children of the mansion’s owners. One of the perks of being a parent is getting to raid your child's Halloween candy stash. They could not possibly eat that much candy in a short amount of time, and we are trying to save their poor little teeth (or so we tell them!) We wanted to know what candy getst your taste buds all excited when you see it mixed in that overflowing bucket. Here are the poll results of our very own reader's favorite Halloween candy. Jack Skeleton Cupcakes 1 1⁄2 cups all-purpose flour • 1 1⁄2 cups granulated sugar 3 ⁄4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder • 1 1⁄2 teaspoons baking soda 3 ⁄4 teaspoon baking powder • 3⁄4 teaspoon salt • 2 large eggs 3 ⁄4 cup buttermilk • 3⁄4 cup cups warm water • 1⁄4 cup vegetable oil 1 tsp vanilla extract • Vanilla frosting • Black frosting Preheat oven to 325°F. Line a muffin tin with cupcake liners. Mix together your flour, sugar, cocoa, baking soda, baking powder, and salt until well combined. Add eggs, buttermilk, warm water, oil, and vanilla. Mix until smooth. This should take just a couple of minutes. Scrape the sides and bottom of the mixing bowl to make sure everything got mixed in. Fill each cupcake 2/3 full. Bake for 20-22 minutes until the cupcakes are baked in the center. Remove from tins and cool completely. Frost with your vanilla frosting and draw the skeleton face with the black frosting.

Monster Cookies 2 3⁄4 cups all-purpose flour • 1 tsp baking soda • 1⁄2 tsp baking powder 1 ⁄2 tsp salt • 1 cup unsalted butter •1 cup + 2 tbsp granulated sugar 2 tbsp light brown sugar • 1 large egg • 2 tsp vanilla extract Food coloring of choice • Candy eyes Preheat oven to 350°F and line your baking sheets with parchment paper. Combine the flour, baking soda, baking powder and salt in a medium-sized bowl and set aside. Mix the butter and sugars together in a large mixer bowl on medium speed until smooth. Add the egg and mix until well combined. Add the vanilla extract and a few drops of food coloring. Mix until well combined. Add the dry ingredients and mix until the dough is formed and lump free. Create 1 1/2 tablespoon-sized balls of cookie dough and place the balls on the baking sheet. Bake cookies for 7-8 minutes. Remove just before the edges begin to turn golden. Place the candy eyeballs onto your cookies before they cool. 10


Once Upon a Pumpkin at Discovery Park by Clare Saum

The theme of Discovery Park of America’s 2021 Pumpkin Village, “Once Upon a Pumpkin,” is sure to thrill the young and the young at heart. Open during the month of October, “Once Upon a Pumpkin” will enchant guests with an entire village of fairy tales created from more than 40,000 pounds of pumpkins enhanced by hay bales and fall flowers like chrysanthemums and pansies. Already under construction are sections featuring the stories of “The Three Little Pigs,” “Jack and the Beanstalk,” “Goldilocks and the Three Bears” and other classic children’s stories. Another popular activity returning for this year’s event is the Pumpkin Maze. “Of course, we love keeping Discovery Park looking beautiful all year round, but Pumpkin Village is a fun opportunity for us to get really creative,” said John Watkins, Discovery Park’s director of grounds and landscaping. “My team has been really excited about this year’s theme, and I think they’ve taken it to a whole new level.” Sponsors of 2021 Pumpkin Village at Discovery Park are Allen Searcy Builder Contractor, Commercial Bank and Trust Company and Williams Country Sausage. “Once Upon a Pumpkin” is free with museum admission. Clarksville Urban Ministries SafeHouse The Fort Campbell Spouses’ Club held its monthly luncheon last month on September 15. Last month’s luncheon put its spotlight on Clarksville Area Urban Ministries’ SafeHouse program. Clarksville Area Urban Ministries’ SafeHouse program is dedicated to providing inclusive and trauma-informed advocacy services to Survivors of domestic violence and their minor children. Their life-saving services are available to anyone victimized by domestic violence. This includes women, men, gender non-binary, LGBTQ+, children, Survivors with disabilities, and Survivors from historically marginalized or underserved populations. The SafeHouse staff is available 24 hours daily to assist anyone in need. The SafeHouse Domestic Violence Crisis Hotline is (931) 552-6900. Are you looking to help their cause? They are always taking donations. The top requested items are cereals, pop tarts, and pancake mix/syrup, pasta, spaghetti sauce, instant potatoes, macaroni and cheese, pop-top canned food, canned meat, canned fruit, personal hygiene items, cleaning supplies, new pillows, and new blankets. Halloween Pumpkin Punch What better way to entertain your guests than with a spooky pumpkin punch? Served, naturally, out of a creepy giant steaming pumpkin. For the punch 750 ml bottle of spiced rum • 1 cup orange juice • 1 cup lemon juice 1 cup spiced syrup • 1⁄2 cup pumpkin puree • 2 1⁄2 cups sparkling water cinnamon sticks (for garnish) • dry ice (for decorating, optional) large pumpkin or punchbowl For the spiced syrup 1 ⁄2 cup demerara sugar • 1⁄2 cup water • 6 whole cloves • 6 allspice berries 1 cinnamon stick (broken into pieces) • 1 star anise pod 6 white peppercorns • 1⁄2 nutmeg (cracked) For the spiced syrup Add the spices to a small saucepan over medium heat. Shake the spices back and forth so that they do not burn. As soon as the spices become toasty and aromatic add the water and sugar. Stir continuously to dissolve the sugar. Bring to a simmer and turn the heat to low. Let simmer for 10 minutes, remove from heat, and strain through a fine mesh strainer. Cool to room temperature before using. For the punch

In a large bowl, add the spiced rum, orange juice, lemon juice, spiced syrup and pumpkin puree. Stir to combine. Once combined, pour the mixture through a fine mesh strainer into a large pitcher and chill until ready to serve. Meanwhile, place a large bowl into your hollowed pumpkin. Be sure your bowl is safe to handle dry ice. I used a metal bowl. Next, use tongs to fill the bottom of the bowl with dry ice, and cover with a slightly smaller bowl. This bowl will hold your punch. Again, make sure both bowls are safe for dry ice. Certain materials will shatter when exposed to dry ice. Pour the mixture into the punchbowl. Add the sparkling water and stir to combine. Now for the fun part. Carefully pour hot water into the bottom bowl so that it contacts the dry ice, thus activating the vapors.Guests can ladle the punch into their glasses and garnish with a cinnamon stick. Remember to give it a stir as you serve, as the ingredients will naturally separate over time.

Soul Taker The Soul Taker is an easy little drink featuring vodka, tequila and amaretto. It can be an acquired taste, but it’s a lot of fun. 1 ounce vodka 1 ounce tequila 1 ounce amaretto Chill your ingredients in advance (stick the bottles in the freezer for 15-20 minutes) Pour all three ingredients into an old-fashioned glass. Stir briefly, and serve.

Garnet Crow The Garnet Crow is a wonderful blend of fruit and spice flavors. You can garnish it with a mint sprig, or keep it dark and mysterious, with no garnish to warn you what’s coming. 2 ounces vodka 2 ounce Captain Morgan spiced rum 1 ⁄2 ounce Blue Curacao (or to taste) 1 ounce peach juice 1 ounce pear juice 1 ounce plum juice Mint Sprig (Optional) Stir everything together in a glass without ice. Pour the mixture into a chilled cocktail glass or champagne coupe. You can garnish with mint sprigs or fruit if you like. 18



The Trigg County Ham Fest is a fun filled festival in its 45th year and will be taking place on October 8th and 9th at 63 Main Street, Cadiz. This festival is slam packed with family friendly attractions, shows, and of course great food. A few things that excited guests can expect to see this year are carnival rides, games, racing pigs, quilt shows, prizes, food trucks and so much more. There will also be live music to jam out to all day long. It is sure to be an amazing day. This year’s headliner for the festival is Jake Hoot. You may know him from his win of the hit show “The Voice.” Other great entertainers such as The Jimmy Church Band and Jared Hall will be there lighting up the stage as well.

After you have gathered your fresh and delicious apples, you may be wondering what tasty recipes you can create. The possibilities are truly endless. We have grabbed a few to get you started this fall season. Homemade Apple Butter 7 pounds apples peeled, cored, and diced • 1⁄2 cup granulated sugar 1 ⁄2 cup packed brown sugar • 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon 1 ⁄4 teaspoon salt • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract Place the prepared apples in a slow cooker. Add the sugars, cinnamon, salt and vanilla to the crockpot. Coat the apples well. Cook on low for about 10 hours. Be sure to keep stirring every couple hours. Use a blender to puree the apple butter until smooth. Cover and refrigerate for up to two weeks.

Apple Cobbler 9 cups apples, peeled, cored, sliced 1⁄4 inch • 3⁄4 cup sugar • 3⁄4 teaspoon ground cinnamon • 2 cups all-purpose flour • 2 cups sugar • 2 eggs 2 teaspoons baking powder • 3⁄4 teaspoon salt • 2⁄3 cup melted butter Preheat the oven to 350°F. Place sliced apples into ungreased 13x9-inch baking dish. Combine your sugar and cinnamon and sprinkle over the apples. Combine the flour, sugar, eggs, baking powder and salt in bowl. Mix until mixture resembles coarse crumbs and sprinkle it over the apples. Next, pour the melted butter on top. Bake 45-55 minutes.

As many people know, October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. But there is so much more meaning behind the month than just wearing pink. Survivors and supporters from all over the globe dedicate the month of October to raising money as well as awareness to this disease. So, what exactly is breast cancer? Breast cancer is a disease in which malignant cancer cells form in the tissues of the breast, and it is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women. Every year, over 252,710 women in the United States are diagnosed with breast cancer. More than 40,500 will lose their life during their breast cancer battle. According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, every 2 minutes a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer and 1 woman will die of breast cancer every 13 minutes. Thankfully when detected early, the 5-year relative survival rate is 100%. That is why early detection is crucial. To ensure early detection, perform monthly breast self-exams and schedule regular clinical breast exams and mammograms. Over 3.3 million breast cancer survivors are alive in the United States today, and many of them are dedicated to helping spread awareness to this life-changing illness. There are many different ways to give back to the cause. Below are a few for you to try and get involved in. Charity Streaming Are you a gamer? Then this may be the perfect fundraising opportunity for you. Game pink allows you to stream and accept donations that will go towards breast cancer research. October is the ultimate month to chow down on some pasta. Not only is it amazing comfort food, but October has National Pasta Day on October 17 and World Pasta Day on October 25. There are just so many unique and delicious ways to prepare pasta, that your dinner options are endless this month when celebrating this mouthwatering dish.

Pesto with Spaghetti Noodles 1

⁄4 cup pine nuts • 2 cups fresh basil leaves • 1⁄2 cup parmesan ⁄2 tsp salt • 1⁄4 tsp black pepper • 1 garlic clove 6 tbsp extra virgin olive oil 10 - 12 oz pasta of choice spaghetti noodles 1

Begin by preparing your pesto. Brown your pine nuts in a medium skillet, and then add your nuts, basil, and spices to a food processor. After your ingredients are finely chopped, add in your olive oil and blend until smooth. Set your pesto to the side. Bring a large pot of water to a boil with some salt. Add pasta and cook for the length of time per the packet. Transfer pasta to a large bowl. Add your pesto and 1⁄4 cup of water. Toss to coat the pasta in pesto. Serve immediately, garnished with fresh parmesan.

Mushroom Garlic Fettuccine 12 oz fettuccine noodles • 2 tbsp olive oil 1 pound cremini mushrooms sliced 4-6 garlic cloves chopped Kosher salt and ground pepper to taste 1 ⁄2 cup grated Pecorino Romano cheese plus more for serving 2-3 tbsp coarsely chopped fresh parsley leaves Begin by cooking the pasta in salted water according to package directions. Once fully cooked, save 2⁄3 cup of the pasta water then drain. Next, heat your oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the mushrooms and cook for 5-7 minutes. Stir in the garlic and season with a pinch of salt and pepper. Stir for 2 minutes. Add the drained pasta, pasta water, and cheese to the skillet. Toss well and top with chopped parsley. 27

Another year to celebrate the traditional Halloween in all its spooky glory on Saturday, October 31. Then again, why should October be all about being scared? Why can't it also be about smiling? Yes, I said it … smiling! On Friday, October 2 you have the opportunity to be positive, give good vibes, be courteous to others and give your best grin, because that day celebrates World Wide Smile Day.

After Ball’s death in 2001, the Harvey Ball World Wide Smile Foundation was created to honor him and continue his legacy. Their slogan: improving the world, one smile at a time. To this day, the Foundation is the official sponsor for World Wide Smile Day. What puts a smile on your face?

What is World Wide Smile Day? It is just as it sounds, a day of the year set aside for smiling. It was initiated in 1999 by Harvey Ball, a commercial artist from Worcester, Massachusetts. You may know him as the

Making other people smile. When someone is feeling blue or red with rage, I immediately feel an obligation to try to cheer them up. If I don’t, I can’t help but think about that person for the remainder of the day.

October 2 is Worldwide Smile Day, but if you practice doing it with a smile all month it will become your habbit.
