The fall season and candy apples go hand and hand. I mean, is it really fall if you haven't gotten that delicious candy apple? Finding the perfect apple can be a little tricky sometimes, which is why learning how to make them at home is so important. We are bringing you three sweet variations to try this season. Is your sweet tooth ready?

Classic Red Candy Apple

2 cups granulated sugar • 1⁄4 cup corn syrup • 3⁄4 cup water 1⁄2 teaspoon red food coloring • 8 small-medium apples

Insert a stick into the stem end of the apple pushing about halfway through and set it aside. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and coat generously with cooking spray. In a large saucepan over high heat, stir together the sugar, syrup, and water. Bring the mixture to a boil and turn the heat to medium. Stir in the food coloring. Insert a candy thermometer and continue to boil until the mixture reaches the hard crack stage (from 300-310 degrees), approximately 15-20 minutes. Remove the sugar mixture from the heat and quickly dip the apples in the sugar mixture turning to coat. Transfer to the baking sheet to cool completely.

Caramel Apple with Nuts

8 Granny Smith apples • 1 cup butter • 2 cups brown sugar 1 cup light corn syrup • 1 can of condensed milk 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • 2 cups chopped nuts of your choice

Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Dip apples in boiling water for about 3 to 5 seconds. Gently wipe down the surface with paper towels to remove any wax residue on the skin. Insert a wooden stick into the center of each apple through the stem end. Set aside to allow your apples to reach room temperature. In a saucepan over medium-high heat, combine butter, brown sugar, corn syrup, and condensed milk. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly. Lower heat to medium and continue to cook, stirring constantly for about 25 to 30 minutes or until a candy thermometer reads 248 degrees F. The caramel should coat the back of a spoon. Remove caramel from heat and add vanilla extract. Stir. Quickly dip each apple into the hot caramel, swirling apples in the sauce completely to about 1/2 inch of the wooden handle. Allow excess caramel to drip back into the pan. Immediately roll apples on the nuts to fully coat. Sprinkle nuts on missed spots. Arrange apples stick side up on the prepared baking sheet. Allow to completely cool.

Chocolate Apple with Sprinkles

5 Granny Smith apples • butter • 50 pieces of unwrapped soft caramels 10 ounces semisweet or bittersweet chocolate • 1 cup sprinkles

Rinse and dry 5 apples. Insert a popsicle stick halfway into the stem end of each apple. Line a baking sheet with plain parchment paper or wax paper that has been coated with butter. In a bowl set over a pan of simmering water, combine the unwrapped soft caramels with 2 tablespoons of water. Stir frequently until melted and smooth. Holding the stick, dip each apple one at a time into the caramel. Swirl to coat evenly. Place apples on the parchment paper or buttered waxed paper and refrigerate until caramel is firm. Melt your chocolate in a microwave in 30-second intervals. Stir frequently until the chocolate is melted and smooth. Dip each apple in chocolate, turning to coat evenly. Place each coated apple on the parchment paper or buttered waxed paper and refrigerate until the chocolate is slightly set. Coat your apple with the sprinkles, and set aside to fully set.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. People all over the globe dedicate the month of October to raising money as well as awareness of this disease. Breast cancer is a disease in which cancer cells form in the tissues of the breast, and it is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women.

Every year, over 252,710 women in the United States are diagnosed with breast cancer. More than 40,500 will lose their life during their breast cancer battle. According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, every 2 minutes a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer and 1 woman will die of breast cancer every 13 minutes.

Did you know that when detected early, the 5-year relative survival rate is 100%? To ensure early detection, perform monthly breast self-exams and schedule regular clinical breast exams and mammograms.

Over 3.3 million breast cancer survivors are alive in the United States today, and many of them are dedicated to helping spread awareness of this life-changing illness.

If you would like to get involved in the cause, many events are going on in the area.

Newly Renovated Children’s Floor at Customs House Museum & Cultural Center

Explorers Landing has existed as a children’s gallery at the Customs House Museum & Cultural Center in Downtown Clarksville since the early 1990s. While the space has evolved over the past three decades, it was finally time for a major renovation. In late January of this year, the Museum unveiled a complete revamp of the popular children’s floor to include brand new spaces for young visitors to explore, imagine and create.

This new and improved hands-on educational exhibit, titled Exploring Our Town: An Adventure For All Ages highlights the different elements that impacted the establishment and growth of Clarksville, from farming and transportation to area wildlife and the Cumberland and Red Rivers. The permanent exhibit encourages healthy choices and aims to facilitate free play for children of all ages, to the benefit of their mental and physical health. The remodel includes numerous engaging activities and learning opportunities, while revamping favorites like the Bubble Cave, Puppet Theatre and McGregor’s Market.

Learn about the science of bubbles and create your own, big and small, in the Bubble Cave. Let your child’s imagination run wild in the miniature McGregor’s Market that focuses on farm-to-table ideas as they shop for their own groceries and pick produce. Visitors can pretend to go fishing for local species that can be found in the Cumberland and Red Rivers, as well as put on a puppet show with animals found throughout our region. New additions also include a hands-on area all about how water, electricity and internet find their way to our homes, as well as learning opportunities about transportation, construction and architecture. Smaller children can explore in a designated area called “Tiny Town” that takes these same exhibit themes and matches them with age appropriate activities.

Feel free to take the exploring outdoors with the Exploring Our Town Walking Tour around Downtown Clarksville that will have you seeing our city from a new perspective.

The Customs House Museum & Cultural Center is a general interest museum located in the historic 1898 Customs House and U.S. Post Office building in Downtown Clarksville. Along with an expansive children’s floor, the Museum boasts 35,000 square feet of art and history exhibit spaces, a hands-on space for families to create their own masterpieces and much more.

The Museum is open Tuesdays – Saturdays from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. and on Sundays from 1 – 5 p.m. Explorers Landing closes at 4:30 p.m. daily. Admission is $12 for adults, $5 for children ages 3-17 and free for children ages 2 and younger. Military discounts are available for admission and memberships.

Next, turn the mixer down to low then beat in the egg, vanilla, and pumpkin. Slowly add in the dry mixture until the dough forms. Cover the bowl with film and refrigerate for at least 2 hours.Preheat the oven to 350°F degrees and grease two cookie sheets. In a small bowl whisked together the sugar and cinnamon for the cinnamon sugar coating. Form the dough into balls then roll in the cinnamon sugar coating and flatten slightly. Pumpkin Spice Scones

2 cups all-purpose 1⁄2 baking powder 1 large egg 1 teaspoon ground Tablespoons

Maple Glaze

2 Tablespoons maple syrup 1 cup sifted confectioners’ sugar • pinch salt, to taste

Preheat oven to 400°F. Line one or two large baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats. Whisk the flour, baking powder, cinnamon, pumpkin pie spice, and salt together in a large bowl. Grate the frozen butter. Add the grated butter to the flour mixture and combine it with a fork until the mixture comes together in pea-sized crumbs. Set aside. Whisk 1⁄3 cup heavy cream, the egg, pumpkin, brown sugar, and vanilla extract together in a small bowl. Drizzle it over the flour mixture and then mix it all together until everything appears moistened. Work the dough into a ball and transfer it onto a floured work surface. Press into a neat 8-inch disc and, with a very sharp knife, cut into 8 equal wedges. Place scones at least 2 inches apart on the prepared baking sheets. Brush scones with remaining heavy cream. Bake the scones for 20-25 minutes or until lightly browned. Remove from the oven and allow to cool for a few minutes as you prepare the icing.

Make the glaze: In a small saucepan over low heat, melt the butter and maple syrup together, whisking occasionally. Once the butter has melted, remove from heat and whisk in the sifted confectioners' sugar. Taste and add a pinch of salt if desired. Drizzle over warm scones.
