Road Trip Games The holiday season is the prime time for military families to load up in their cars and visit their families. For many service members, the only time they can visit their hometown is for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Even though this is a very exciting time, the long drive there is often dreadful. Trying to keep the entire family entertained for hours at a time can be exhausting, which is why we are here to bring you some amazing and fun road trip games that everyone will enjoy. So, put the phones and tablets away and enjoy some good old-fashioned car games. These moments are sure to turn into memories.

Categories One person picks a category (ex: Candy bars, NFL teams, pop stars) and everyone takes turns naming something in that category until someone is stumped and eliminated. Last person standing is the winner.

Lyric Game Pick a popular song and pause it at any point. Have a random player sing the next line of the song. If they can’t, they are eliminated.

I Spy One person says “I spy with my little eye…. something” and then briefly describes the object that they see. The other players then proceed to take turn asking yes or no questions until they can guess what the item is.

Alphabet Take turns going through the alphabet, starting with the letter A. Each person must find an object that starts with the next letter either something in the car or outside of the car.

Would You Rather This is a road trip classic. Try to stun the other players with the weirdest or most difficult questions you can come up with like “Would you rather eat a bowl of dead bees or drink a cup of public toilet water?” Gross.

The License Plate Game Spend the entire road trip trying to find a license plate from every US State. Download a printable version of this game from rasingwhasians.com

The Movie Game To begin, a random player says the name of an actor. Then, the next person must name a movie that actor has starred in. Another player must name another actor who starred in that same movie. The next player must say another movie that actor was in, and so on.

Kiss Marry Kick Start by listing three people living, dead, or fictional. All the players then must pick who they would choose to kiss, marry, and kick. Example: Kiss, Marry, or Kick Minnie, Mickey, or Donald Duck?

Rule Everyone in the family makes one crazy rule at the beginning of the trip such as “every time we stop at a gas station, we have to clap our hands twice before getting out of the car.” Or “every time we pass a red truck we have to whistle.” Every time a rule is done, everyone but the last person to catch on gains a point. Whoever has the least points when you get to your destination loses.

Rhyme Pick a starting word and each player must say a word that it rhymes with. Whoever repeats or gets stumped is eliminated. 6

The Ultimate Green Beans with Bacon and Onion By OneCreativeMommy.com 3-4 cans of green beans • 1 large onion 6 (or more) strips of bacon (For best flavor, use regular bacon. You can use turkey bacon for a less flavorful–but healthier–dish.)

Cut bacon into small strips and fry on medium heat in a large pan.Chop onion, and add it to cooking bacon. (Note. If you are using turkey bacon, don’t add the onion until the bacon is almost finished cooking.)

Drain liquid from all except one can of green beans. Add beans (including the water from the one can) to the bacon and onion. Cook over low heat for about 10 minutes or more. (Most of the liquid will boil away.)

Lightly salt and pepper. 8

Thanksgiving can feel a little different when you are far away from family. The typical “all hands-on deck” mentality that involves all of your close family and friends bringing a dish to contribute to the Thanksgiving feast goes out the window. It can feel extremely overwhelming to cook a huge meal alone, which is why some families opt to go out to eat on Thanksgiving. If you are on post two of the Fort Campbell DFAC’s will be serving on Thanksgiving day. 2nd BCT DFAC (7048 Rhineland St.) will have breakfast from 8:30-10am, a full Thanksgiving dinner from 12-1:30pm and supper from 4-5:30pm 3rd BCT DFAC (18th & Ashua Valley St,) will have Thanksgiving dinner from 9:30am-1pm and supper from 5-6:30pm.

Thanksgiving is about more than just cooking up a huge turkey and eating until you can’t anymore. It is all about remembering what you are thankful for and using the day to fully reflect on it. There are many different things we as individuals are grateful for, and its always nice to hear about it from other people. That is why we reached out to a few local military spouses and asked them “What are you thankful for?” “There are so many things that I am thankful for, but this year I am just thankful that my husband will be home for the holiday. He has missed multiple Thanksgivings due to deployment or trainings. I will just be thankful that he is across the table from me this year.” Nadia from Arkansas “I am extremely thankful that my son will be able to spend this Thanksgiving at home instead of at the hospital like last year. He has had a few health problems and last Thanksgiving was spent in the hospital. They tried to make the day special, but it just wasn’t the same.” Gemma from Texas “I am just thankful that we have a roof over our heads and food in our stomachs. I know that not everyone is even that lucky.” Victoria from Tennessee “This year I am very thankful that I was able to find a new job after looking for months. The extra money has made such a huge difference in my family’s life.” Laura from New Mexico “Can I be thankful for my daughter finally potty training? After months of trying and a bunch of tears, she is finally getting the hang of it. I am so happy. It felt like a never-ending battle.” Becca from California “My mother’s cancer is finally in remission, so I am thankful for good health and family. They are two of the most important things in the world. This whole experience has changed the way I view things. This year we are making the 10-hour drive home so I can spend this Thanksgiving with her.” Katie from Texas “I am thankful for my little miracle baby that was born recently. We had been trying for over a year, and we will get to spend this Thanksgiving as a family of three.” Nicole from Missouri

Bursting with Pride is a 10,000 square foot mural created by artist and APSU alum Ricky Deel in the summer of 2000. The mural depicts 15 buildings in Clarksville of historical and architectural significance that were damaged by the, now infamous, F4 tornado that struck Clarksville on Friday, Jan. 22, 1999. In the mural, the buildings are randomly placed; separated by trees, under a cloud- filled, blue sky in a panoramic view. It is painted on the side of an older, three-story brick building that overlooks a parking lot adjacent to the Roxy Regional Theatre. Deel painted the mural in the summer every day for three months. Besides the size, he said the most difficult part of the process was dealing with the summer heat.

Life After Deployment by Alex Zapetis

When a deployment ends, there tends to be a lot of gray area on some of the struggles a family may face during those first few weeks back. Homecomings and reunions are such a happy moment that it can be hard to stop and think about any issues that the 9 months apart can cause. Luckily, my family has had a pretty smooth adjustment period. Part of that I credit to my prior research and discussions with other military wives. It helped me to prepare for a few of the obstacles that we could face, and I would like to share them with you. I quickly learned that money is a major topic of discussion that you are going to want to be clear on right away. Sit down and discuss the current budget, and any expectations on how you both would like to spend any money that was set aside during the deployment. Being on the same page about your spending habits is incredibly important for any marriage. Also, be prepared for paychecks to be a little weird after their return. My husband received around $300 less than his usual paycheck one pay period, but because we had planned ahead and budgeted, we sailed through the difficult time with no issues. After they return home from being overseas, their bodies may need a little help adjusting back to a normal routine. For my husband, he had a hard time sleeping and eating for the first couple of days back. It was extremely frustrating for him. I listened to his concerns and tried to help him in any way that I could. I didn’t get angry about wasted food or the crazy late nights. I let him work through it, and it helped avoid any arguments on the subject. My last piece of advice is to allow your spouse to spend time with their friends if needed. I know it can be difficult to share them after the months apart, but if they need to talk to friends and other soldiers about the deployment they just went through together, let them. Talking to people that have been through the same things that you have can be extremely healing. Don’t be afraid to seek help if you or your soldier is having a hard time adjusting. It is okay not to be okay, and seeking help is a great first step to getting your life and marriage back on track. There are multiple resources to use when seeking help. A great place to start is militaryonesource.mil. They offer free, confidential face-to-face non-medical counseling. It is quick and easy, and you will be connected to a counselor in no time. The website also provides contact information for more serious issues if those needs arise. 31
