The Fort Campbell Soldier and Family Assistance Center (SFAC) provides customized integrated support services dedicated to serving Warriors in Transition and their Families. Child, Youth and School Services (CYSS) is honored to be a part of this wonderful facility. The SFAC Child Care Facility provides on-site Hourly Child Care and special accommodations for children of transitional Soldiers while they attend medical appointments, chaplain services, counseling, FAP appointments or other required services. In addition, the SFAC-CYSS Liaison provides assistance and coordinates support for childcare on and off post. Soldiers and transitional Families are put at ease knowing that their child is supervised in a safe, nurturing environment filled with developmental age appropriate activities. Further, Child, Youth and School Services is composed of professional staff that have specialized competency-based training in child/youth development. Reinforced by our training, we take the extra step to provide opportunities in mastering new skills through bonding, role modeling and forming relationships not only with the child but with the Families as well. Our goal is to provide the Warriors in Transition and their Families with the peace of mind that their children are at the forefront of what we do - supporting the Warriors in Transition during the time of recovery.

Blue’s Clues – Celebrat By Ramon M. Maisonet

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! As we approach the New Year and prepare for holidays, some of us are gearing up to travel long distances to see loved ones and some of are preparing to host Family members. This is the time of year where we celebrate of surprises and joy. There will be reunions, turkey and dressing, mac and cheese and those ugly holiday sweaters. There will be office parties to attend, holiday shoppers and hopefully plenty of snow. While songs of the holidays will dominate the airwaves and jingle bell commercials will flood TV screens, for many people, the onset of the holidays can be difficult and less than cheerful. Between conflict in the Family and other relationships, dark winter days and painful reminders of bad past events, many can experience depression commonly called holiday blues. If you happen to be one who struggles with the holidays and are already beginning to feel some anxiety, and even sadness, as we approach the holidays, I have good news–it doesn’t have to be that way. I want to share seven tips that can to help you get through the holiday season and maybe even help you enjoy it . 13

Number 7: Start new traditions if you are resentful about your past ones. Whether it was continually getting new socks as a kid when you were looking for a train set or a brand new Barbie doll, or the fact that you grew up without a tree or gifts while everyone around you celebrated feverishly, you have an opportunity to create new memories starting now; as in today, in this very moment.

Number 6: Give to others. Whether you decide to volunteer at a soup kitchen, a children’s hospital, the salvation army, or any number of agencies to help the less fortunate, it can be a big boost to your mood and a positive shot to your emotional health when you see the smile and the appreciativeness of those that you have given some of your time to. Your time to others is a precious gift.

Number 5: Don’t fall for the Social Media Okie Dokie. Did you know that a study this year by researchers at the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Medicine found that participants that use social media very frequently have 2.7 times the likelihood of depression than users that viewed social media less frequently? This happens because of a phenomenon called “social comparison,” where someone compares their life and bases their self-worth against others they perceive are doing better than they are – all of which could be unhealthy because, let’s face it, everyone tells the truth on Facebook, right?

ting the Holiday Season

Number 4: Don’t misuse alcohol. One of my favorite quotes comes from a book called Never Lick a Moving Blender. In it, the author says, “You can’t drown your sorrows, they float.” Meaning, if you are depressed about a particular thing, that particular thing is going to still be there no matter how intoxicated you decide to get. Instead, do number three.

Number 3: Engage in activities that stimulate your physical and mental wellness: Numerous trips to a Physical Fitness Center, riding a bicycle, getting a massage, reading, going to a church service, taking a walk through nature or talking to someone who lifts your spirits, can calm you down and give you a better perspective on what is important.

Number 2: It might not be that you are experiencing being sad, you could be experiencing having Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD): Did you know that if you if you tend to start getting depressed when the winter approaches each year, and that depression doesn’t go away after the holidays are over, you may have SAD. SAD is a form of depression that’s brought on by the changes in seasons and can sometimes require medical treatment–so you may want to talk to doctor if this is the case.

Number 1: Gratitude: “Some people grumble” said Alphonse Karr, “that roses have thorns; I am grateful that thorns have roses.” Remember that no matter where in life you find yourself, there is always something to be grateful for if you look hard enough.

By Summer Broach Estep Wellness Center is an anomaly for the Army. It is different in nature than a normal Physical Fitness Center. “What are we paying for?” is the question we are always asked. Our answer: “the environment.” When you walk through the door you are immediately greeted with smiling faces and staff that want to help! Knowledgeable staff are available to consult with you about getting started on that path to meet your fitness goals and needs. Estep provides the hottest and most current trending fitness classes with certified and highly trained instructors. Zumba, POUND, Insanity; just to name a few. Personal trainers are available to assess your goals and guide you on the best path forward to achieve positive results. We also can provide structured classes for units and their physical fitness or team building needs. Located diagonally across from Gardner Indoor pool on Kentucky Avenue, the location couldn’t be better. You have the Estep Wellness Center opportunity to work out, cross the street and then swim or take a class to complete your daily cross-training. The new 2270 Kentucky Ave. Fitness Childcare Center located next door to Estep which is (270) 798-4023 another great advantage. The Fitness Childcare Center Monday – Friday: 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. provides hourly childcare for the peak hours parents like to Saturdays 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. • Sundays 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. work out. Enjoying the Holidays with an Abundance of Physical Fitness Centers

by Jennifer Wick The holidays have arrived and with that can come a lot of emotions and a lot of food. Have you thought about how you are going to handle the festivities, the food and maybe even the stress that comes with it? Fort Campbell is privileged to be home to seven physical fitness centers. Fortunately, they are spread throughout post and offer many options to combat the holidays in a positive way.

Olive PFC has an expansive weight room, a large cardio area, wooden racquetball court and separate saunas. Olive PFC is home to the 2BCT physical therapy room. The easiest way to get to Olive is to use the T.C. Freeman gate and follow Screaming Eagle all the way to A Shau Valley. Turn right and it’s on the right. 6990 A Shau Valley Rd. (270) 798-4101 Monday – Friday 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Lozada PFC

Sabo PFC formerly known as Freedom Fighters PFC, has two wooden basketball courts, a cardio room, multipurpose room and an additional weight room. This PFC has separate saunas. It is located near Campbell Army Airfield and can be accessed easiest through Gate 7. 7037 Toccoa Ave (270) 798-7356 Monday – Friday 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday - Sunday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

has a rubber, full sized basketball court, large cardio area, separate saunas, a rubber floored racquet ball court and a spin bike room. The T. C. Freeman gate can be utilized. Shaw PFC Fratellenico PFC

is the newest of the seven facilities, built in 2014. Shaw boasts a multipurpose room that can be set for volleyball, two full court wooden basketball courts and an indoor running track.
