Into MWR’s Best Sandwiches By Elaine Marinho

When I think of lunch time in America, I automatically think of a sandwich, which is meat, cheese or other filling between two slices of bread. The best thing about sandwiches is they can range from simple to elaborate and with so many different varieties, they can please anyone’s palate. Fort Campbell MWR has some of the best sandwiches around and if you are craving this traditional American fare, make sure you stop by one of our restaurants for your mid-day meal.

Smokehaus at Sportsman’s Lodge If you plan on swinging by The Smokehaus at Sportsman’s Lodge, make sure you try their pulled pork bbq sandwich. The Smokehaus is known for their bbq so it only makes sense to try their juicy, moist and flavorful pulled pork piled high on a toasted, fresh baked bun. It’s good enough to eat without any add-ons but if you want a little extra pop, a variation of sauces are available to try. I personally recommend slathering on the Carolina Gold.

Hooper Bowling Center Planning on going bowling? While you are Hooper Bowling Center, stop by their snack bar for their cheeseburger. This All-American burger has flavor in every bite and comes with onion, lettuce, pickle and tomato, but they’ll make it however you want! You can add crispy bacon to your burger for only 50 cents extra. Is one juicy beef patty not enough? Hooper offers a double and triple cheeseburger for their super hungry customers.

The Zone Nothing makes me happier than shooting virtual bad guys on Call of Duty, except maybe a delicious burger. The Zone is perfect for me because they offer both video games and their signature Zone Burger. The Zone Burger is a cheeseburger topped with onion rings, bbq pork, and cole slaw. Duronda, the creator of the Zone Burger, said this sandwich is her favorite because she loves watching Soldiers eat it. It’s so big and messy, some Soldiers have to eat it with a fork. Some forsake the eating utensil and just open their mouths wide.

The Dawg Haus As long as you put a hotdog on a bun, it’s considered a sandwich and there is no better place to get a hotdog on Fort Campbell than at the Dawg Haus. While the Dawg Haus offers a variety of gourmet hotdogs, their Macho Dawg boasts extra tasty toppings. This foot-long, beef hotdog comes with cheese sauce, chili, onions, peppers, and tomatoes. Are you extra hungry? You can upgrade any hotdog to a Big Dawg 1⁄2 pounder for only $2.75.

Cole Park Commons Want something a little lighter for lunch? Stop by Cole Park Commons Southern Buffet for their grilled chicken club panini with pesto on sourdough bread. This will be one of the Southern Buffet’s feature sandwiches for the winter months and is a hearty yet healthier choice than your typical burger. Keep in touch on social media for information about their updated deli line.

Cole Park Golf Course After a morning of golfing at Cole Park Golf Course, visit the 19th Hole Snack Bar for the popular Back Nine Burger. The Back Nine Burger is a new take on the classic sandwich with a mouthwatering half pound Angus patty seasoned and grilled to perfection. This delicious burger is served open-faced on a lightly toasted bun. Choose from a variety of fresh toppings including lettuce, tomato, onion, and pickle and for something different, tee up the bacon and jalapenos. Don’t just take my word for it that these sandwiches are delicious, try them for yourself! Enjoy some of their other options and see if you find a favorite sandwich of your own! Check out our website at campbell.armymwr.com for full menus, hours, addresses and phone numbers for facilities. Get ready to chow down!

Leap Ahead in 2016 By Jenelle Grewell February normally only has 28 days, but this year we will get to see 29 days this month because it’s a Leap Year! Leap Years were created to keep our modern day Gregorian Calendar in alignment with the Earth’s revolutions around the sun. It takes 365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes and 46 seconds for the Earth to rotate around the sun. The Gregorian Calendar only has 365 days in a year, so if we didn’t add an extra day in February every four years, our calendar would be off by 24 days after only 100 years. Is a Leap Year extra special because the month of February gets an additional day? Let’s take a trip down memory lane and look at the Leap Years over the past decade. 2012: On July 31, USA’s Michael Phelps won his 19th Olympic medal during the Summer Olympics in London. This made him the athlete with the most Olympic wins of all time, breaking the record previously held by Russian gymnast Larisa Latynina. The Curiosity Rover landed on Mars and used social networking sites to document her adventure. She had been tweeting and posting photos, but October 2012 marked the first time she checked-in with the social media FourSquare while on the red planet. Hurricane Sandy struck in 2012 but Santa saved the day! Every year, a wealthy businessman from Missouri plays Secret Santa and travels to the neediest cities in the United States to help those in need that he finds in thrift stores, soup kitchens and laundromats. In 2012, he went to Staten Island, one of the cities hit hardest by the hurricane.

2008: Despite whatever you may think about politics, 2008 had a huge milestone when American citizens elected the first black president of the United States. Barack Obama won the 2008 presidential election against John McCain in an historic electoral sweep. That same election also marked the first time a major party had a female vice-presidential candidate when Sarah Palin ran with McCain. The oldest nuclear Family ever discovered was unearthed in 2008 in central Germany. Researchers dug up a grave dating back 4,600 years which featured an adult male, an adult female, and two male children. DNA and forensic evidence uncovered that the Family most likely died together in a raid. Genetic screens are used to help detect cancer but 2008 saw the introduction of gene screens to help figure out how to treat cancer. The genetic test SPOT-Light scans patients' genes to determine who will respond best to the cancer drug Herceptin, which is effective against tumors that release certain types of proteins. Another gene screen test called OncotypeDx was introduced that year. This screening determines the likelihood of reccurring breast cancer and also which chemotherapy treatments will work best on which tumors. 2004: Today’s largest social media service was released in 2004 which means we have been Facebook creeping for over 10 years! Launched by Mark Zuckerburg and Eduardo Saverin, the site’s membership was originally

campbell.armymwr.com

www.

limited to Harvard students and wasn’t opened to the public until 2006, but users wasted no time signing up for accounts. As of November 2015, Facebook had 1.55 billion active monthly users. Everyone knows I am a cat person and in 2004, my kitty loving heart was soaring when it was discovered that humans tamed cats as far back as 9,500 years ago. On the Mediterranean island of Cyprus, scientists discovered the remains of a cat and human buried together, leading to speculation that this is the oldest documentation of humans keeping cats as pets. This shattered the idea that the Egyptians were the first to tame felines which was only about 4,000 years ago. 2004 was a sad time for fans, the popular sitcom Friends ended its 10 year run in May. The series finale had a total of 52.5 million American viewers which made it the fifth most watched series finale in all of television and the most watched television episode in the 2000’s decade. 2000: The bigger thing in 2000 was the start of a new millennium! Some people were nervous about the date change from 1999 to 2000 because they were afraid all the world’s major computer systems would face major disruptions. The Y2K scare quickly dissipated when the clocks changed with no incident and the new year, century, and millennium started off without a hitch. The presidential election of 2000 saw one of the closest elections to date. The ticket between Al Gore and George W. Bush leaned in favor for Bush by a mere 537 votes in the crucial swing state of Florida. While Gore won the popular vote that year, Bush won the presidency due to the electoral college. Because of this win based on states, the terms “blue states” and “red states” were coined. As an anime fan, I remember watching Pokemon and Dragonball Z when I was as young as 10 years old. It turns out, the two most popular words searched on the Internet in 2000 were “Pokemon” and “Dragonball.” Both franchises continue to be extremely popular today with Pokemon still launching new games and Dragonball releasing movies. If you go to any anime convention, you are guaranteed to see plenty of cosplay from both franchises. What do you think 2016 will bring? More groundbreaking elections? Leaps in scientific and historic discovery? What is going to be new in pop culture? I may just have to try something different in my own life on February 29 since it only comes around once every four years.

Celebrate the Day of Love With MWR By Jenelle Grewell The hearts, the chocolate, the flowers and the fact that everything is pink makes Valentine's Day one my favorite holidays. For some people, Valentine’s Day comes with a lot of pressure to create the perfect date to show just how much you care. Let MWR be there to help you! MWR offers many great activities that are sure to please your special someone, no matter what they like to do.

Shooter: Turn target practice into a date by going to the Privately Owned Firearm Range. Prices for the Firearm Range vary but all are less than $10. Various weapons and other equipment are available for rent. Just make sure that any privately owned weapons are registered with the Provost Marshall. Nothing smells more like romantic than gun powder. Swimmer: Does your date remind you of a merperson? Then take them to Gardner Indoor Pool for Valentine’s Day. For only $3 per person, you can jump off the diving board and splash into love. And if your date can’t swim very well, the shallow end can still provide a fun and refreshing way to appreciate the holiday.

Crafter: Is your partner more artsy? Take them to the Guenette Arts and Crafts center for their Valentine's Date. Guenette offers a variety of classes from ceramics to stained glass to drawing. You can also paint pottery, frame a picture or carve something in their wood shop. Fees for the classes and shops won’t break the bank and you will walk away having created something with your sweetie that will commemorate your special day.

Bowler: Go on a more classic date by taking your date to Hooper Bowling Center! Fees for games and shoe rental vary depending on the day of the week but no matter what, it costs less than $4 to bowl and shoe rental is less than $3. Hooper also has a yummy snack bar with a variety of food. Enjoy their fresh dough pizza or even breakfast all day! Whether you and your date enjoy a goofy game of bowling or decide to be competitive, you are sure to have a great time at Hooper.

Gamer: One of my personal favorite dates is playing video games and if your special someone is the same way, take them to The Zone! Big screen TVs with a selection of Playstation, Xbox games, and an arcade area is sure to make any gamer happy. Stop by their snack bar for a Zone Burger or any of their other delicious fare.

Reader: Does your date love to get lost in a good novel? Treat your special someone by taking them to the Robert F. Sink Library. Pick out a book to read together or maybe woo them with romantic poetry. Most services at the library are free and as a reader myself, I know nothing makes me happier than a great book. Climber: The weather may still be too cold for rock climbing outside but Outdoor Recreation has a solution for those who enjoy the activity. Take your sweetie to the indoor climbing wall for a fun and physically engaging date. It only costs $10 per person to climb and the fee comes with instruction and equipment. Whether your date is a newcomer or an experienced climber, they are guaranteed to have a delightful time!

Check out MWR's social media pages or website for more information about these activities and maybe you'll discover a new idea of your own! Whatever you decide to do for Valentine’s Day, I hope you impress your date and that Cupid's Arrow doesn't hurt too much.

Don’t Have A Cow By Xan Phillips-Burgos Tucked away behind a gas station and next to a small barber shop off Tiny Town Road, is a small Family run cafe called Don't Have a Cow. It's a vegan cafe that has an extensive menu with soup, salad, wraps, burgers and desserts. The beverage choices are vegan as well with Natural Sky Soda, smoothies, water and vegan milk. It’s a little place that could easily be missed if you weren’t looking but sometimes restaurants like this are hidden gems. The outside of the building is decorated with small cow statue outside the door. A table is set up for you to enjoy your lunch on sunnier, warmer days. Once you enter, the pleasant smell of herbs fills your senses. A cozy cafe decorated in hues of greens, black, and white. There are a few tables, easily moved together if you come with a group of friends, along with a raised bar facing the expansive window.

You’re greeted with a smile and handed a menu that shows the many vegan options. I’ve been a vegetarian my whole life and I’m also lactose intolerant which means vegan meal options are life savers. Everything listed sounded so appealing to someone like me who has a limited choice when going out to eat. Deciding on the Field Roast Burger that came with tortilla chips, my friend and I ordered a side of the spicy cashew cheese dip which sounds a little strange to those new to vegan choices but one dip of it and I was hooked. It was so full of flavor with just a slight bit of spice for that twinge. Creamy and tasty, it was a perfect start to the meal. The Field Roast Burger arrived, stacked high and top bun almost hanging off into the tortilla chips on the side. The buns were slightly warm to the touch, soft with just enough crunch. The burger came with fresh lettuce, mayo, mustard, pickles and tomato. I choose to add some vegan cheese to my burger. Vegan cheese is a wonderful replacement for regular cheese.

campbell.armymwr.com

www.

The patty made with different herbs and vegetables and was absolutely delicious. Taking a bite of it was almost like a trip down memory lane when my grandmother used to cook vegetarian meals on Sundays. I would describe the taste as a home barbeque for a vegan. The hearty patty was so flavorful, tasty and filling, I had to take a breather just so I could finish it. My friend ordered the meatball and marinara sub. The meatballs were made with mushrooms and other vegetables, drenched in a rich and hearty marinara sauce and topped with vegan mozzarella cheese, all on a soft sub roll. My friend is frequent meat eater and she said she enjoyed the sub. I’ve never tasted meat so I can’t compare the difference between real meatballs and fake meatballs but she said the vegan meatballs could definitely hold a candle to real meatballs. “It doesn't taste exactly like a real meatball, which is what I was expecting. It has its own distinct flavor. But it is very good. I think, it might be better than meatballs made with meat,” she said. As we finished up our meal, taking a break to enjoy the atmosphere of the cafe, a few customers got their food, which they praised and promised to come back. A few more people came in for takeout orders, one customer even came in for the second day in a row. Once the meal was done, we decided to get some dessert after hearing customers talk about how much they loved the cupcakes. The choices that day were red velvet and sweet potato with a cream cheese icing, vegan cream cheese icing, of course. As someone who doesn’t have much of a sweet tooth, I was ready for a few bites and then give the rest to my friend, so we choose to get just one of the red velvet. One small bite and I was shocked. The cream cheese wasn’t too sweet but so tasty, it was the right balance of not too sweet but just enough to feel like I satisfied the craving. The texture of the red velvet was soft, moist and a perfect ending to the meal.

I actually wished I had gotten another cupcake. My experience with Don’t Have a Cow was an extremely pleasant from start to finish. The smells, the service, the food and the homey feeling made my meal thoroughly enjoyable. Being a vegetarian and lactose intolerant, I usually have to go to Nashville to find vegetarian/vegan restaurants so to find one just down the road from my work is a nice surprise and something to look forward to when I want to have a nice lunch. I plan to go back in hopes of trying more of the items on the menu. There are a variety of choices that will allow me to have many chances to try and taste new options whenever I come back. I hope you also come to try this small, Family run business, where the employees are hardworking and welcoming. It’s open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. for lunch Tuesdays through Saturdays. They also offer a takeout option if you are in a hurry for lunch. You can easily search for them on Facebook to find their page that announces the cupcakes of the day and more information. I may be a vegetarian due to food allergies and humanitarian reasons but I understand many want to make the switch because of the health benefits. Make the most of your new diet and stop by Estep Wellness Center for some great fitness classes every day of the week.

The Transition Process: Why Should You Buy-in? By Arica Urena

19

For the vast majority of retiring service members, retirement does not technically mean that they are going to “retire”. Retirees often elect to begin the next chapter in their lives by starting a new career within the unknown, and at times, intimidating Civilian sector. While transitioning from the military, most separating service members experience a range of emotions. The only work culture that you have known for the last 20 or more years are the day to day norms of military life. You have performed your military tasks and drills honorably and now you must leave all that you know behind. And now that you have chosen to hang up your uniform, there is a new culture that you must adapt to … the Civilian culture. Sure, it may seem intimidating at first, but the Fort Campbell Soldier for Life Transition Assistance Center is here to help. In an effort to ensure your

success, there are a minimum of six classes that you will be required to complete: Transition Overview, Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) Crosswalk, Veteran’s Affairs (VA) Briefings I, VA Briefings II, Financial Planning, and the Department of Labor Employment Workshop. Some clients eagerly embrace the transitioning process while others quickly flee. However, it is extremely critical that you learn how to properly retire from the military into a successful Civilian career. One of the first classes that all retiring service members are required to attend is Transition Overview. During this class, clients are introduced to the Soldier for Life Program process, changes in work dynamics, challenges that complicate the conversion process, and conversion resources. Clients complete an Individual Transitioning Plan (ITP). Transitioning

campbell.armymwr.com

www.

service members are often under the impression that they do not have to complete an ITP because their “Plan A” is rock solid. Life changing events can occur within the blink of an eye which may often cause your “rock solid” plan to be altered or completely eliminated. In order to save yourself some heartache and headaches, it is extremely important to have “Plans A-C” at a minimum. This way if your “Plan A” collapses, you will be able to quickly activate “Plan B” and/or “Plan C”. MOS Crosswalk is one of our most interactive Soldier for Life Transition classes. Clients will participate in identifying the type jobseeker category they relate to: Multi-tracker, Transitioning Specialist, Transitioning Generalist, Career Switcher, or Undecided. They evaluate the pros, cons, and come up with solutions for the cons of each type of jobseeker. Service members select and examine a variety of careers that were generated based on results from the Interest Profiler Assessment. And then complete a Gap Analysis where potential breaks in training, skills, education, and certification will be identified. It is important to understand your VA benefits as they can positively affect you and your Family forever. For this reason, we have two mandatory VA Briefings that all transitioning Soldiers must attend: VA classes I and II. Both briefings are taught by certified VA Benefits Representatives whose primary goal is to ensure you have a clear understanding of your entitlements and how to apply for your benefits prior to separation fromthe military. “Why do I have to attend a Financial Planning class?” For the vast majority of Retirees, their retirement check will not be comparable to their active duty pay check. Regardless if you believe that your finances are in order, this

class will provide you with additional reassurance and also highlight some areas to consider in managing your finances. The Department of Labor Employment Workshop class provides clients with three days of extensive training that is aimed at ensuring that you are properly prepared for their transition to Civilian life. You will learn how to properly dress for interviews, learn interviewing techniques, and how to make a lasting impression. An in-depth labor market analysis will be conducted, you will create and proofread your resume, and identify professional references. Additionally, you will learn how to refrain from using military jargon and how to properly incorporate Civilian language into your daily conversations. It is best to buy-in to the separating process earlier rather than later. This will provide you with an opportunity to make a successful transition, by properly planning for the next chapter in you life. In order get registered or to schedule your first class, please call (270) 798-5000 or visit us at 5661 Screaming Eagle Blvd., Fort Campbell, KY 42223.

Eat Like a Caveman By Carrie Oliver

As someone who works out to compete in cross fit competitions, fueling my body is important. I work too hard in the gym to just throw it all away by eating something not good for me. I have turned to eating paleo because it is an easy and healthy way to ensure I feed my body what it needs. The paleo diet is the idea that you should only consume things believed to be eaten by early humans. This means a lot of meat, vegetables and fruit with few grains and absolutely no processed food! But being healthy isn't all that matters to me. I like my food to be delicious. Here is one of my favorite recipes that is hearty and tasty. Get fit at our new Functional Fitness gym.
