Lovebug Valentine’s Day Craft Materials:
Valentine’s Day is a great time to sit down and partake in some fun crafts together! They can make great decorations around your home, or gifts to pass out in the classroom. Heidi from onecreativemommy.com has some adorable crafts that your little one is sure to love!
Pom poms of various sizes and shapes (The fuzzy pompoms are quite cute, but they are more difficult to work with. They do work. They just take a lot more dry time. If your kids are very young or not very patient, stick to the plain pom poms.) Googly eyes (Tiny black pom poms also make cute eyes for tiny bugs.) Craft glue (I like Elmers Craft Bond) Foam heart shapes Pipe cleaners Scissors Construction Paper Instructions: Each bug will be different, but here’s the basic idea: The pom poms are used as the body of the bugs. The foam hearts can be used as wings or as feet. Tiny pom poms can also be used as feet, depending on the look you want and on the size of the bug. Googly eyes or tiny pom poms can be used as eyes. Pipe cleaners make good legs for spiders. For a different wing style, use construction paper hearts, and fold them in half (see the bumble bee and the butterfly). To create the bugs, secure all bug parts together with craft glue. (You can try school glue, but we found that it didn’t dry quickly enough for this project. The craft glue worked better.) As you add each new piece, hold the pieces together for a few minutes before moving on. To create the spider, cut 2 pipe cleaners in half. Bend each piece into an “M” shape. Poke each end through a heart shape to make feet. Twist the “M’s” together in the middle, and then adjust so that all of the feet are facing the right direction. Glue a large pom pom to the center of the legs, and then add the eyes. (Adorable!)

Easy Valentine’s Day Craft for Kids Materials: A pad of heart-shaped paper (This scalloped heart paper was purchased at Joann’s, but I bet you can find similar packs at the Dollar Store, Target, Walmart, or Michaels.) Foam heart shapes Googly eyes Colored paper strips (Red, pink, white, or Valentine colors of your choice) Glue Each child will need 1 heart-shaped piece of paper, two googly eyes, 9 heart shapes (2 eyes, two hands, two feet, two mouth, one nose), and four paper strips. Instructions: Using hearts, googly eyes and glue, create a face on the heart paper. (If you purchased sticky backed foam hearts and googly eyes, you won’t need glue for this part.) Fold each strip of paper back and forth (accordion style), and glue a heart to the end of each strip. These are the hands and feet. Glue the strips to the large heart to create arms and legs.
Love Tree Family Craft Heidi says “Trace each family member’s hand and arm on a piece of construction paper, butcher paper, or wallpaper, and cut them out (the paper arms–not the real ones!) We used wallpaper scraps. (I’m one of those crazy people who saves old wallpaper sample books–just because I know I’ll find a project for them some day! It drives my hubby crazy.) Using colored paper, cut large hearts for leaves. Each person will need at least one heart per family member–not including them. Give each person a stack of blank hearts, and ask them to write a note for each member of the family. They should write something that they love about them or complete the sentence, “I love ______ because . . . ” (Little kids can color the hearts or dictate their notes to someone else to write.) Sort the finished hearts by person and glue them onto the hand/arm trees. (Glue wouldn’t stick to the textured wallpaper, so we used staples.) Display the trees somewhere that they can be seen all month (the inside of the front door, the refrigerator, the bathroom mirror, etc).” 6
Love is an amazing thing! It happens so randomly that it seems like it is magic. There is one day a year that is dedicated to that magical and unforgettable For me personally, one of my favorite Valentine’s Day memories happened four years ago. My husband, who was then my fiancé, was at basic training on Valentine’s Day. I was rarely hearing from him and our main form of communication was letters. Because of this, I wasn’t expecting anything for Valentine’s Day. To my surprise, I received a sweet card in the mail with a note inside. I still have the card to this day. It meant the world to me that in the middle of all the craziness, he remembered me. Nico & Alex – South Carolina
kind of love. We asked some military spouses at Fort Campbell to share some of their favorite Valentine’s Day memories. Stories of love and happiness are enough to make anyone’s heart flutter!
“Whenever my husband was in basic training, he sent my mom money and a list of what to buy me for Valentine’s Day. I woke up to this on Valentine’s Day morning and a letter from him as well.” Caleb & Tayler Summitt –Kentucky
“We had just met 2 weeks prior to him taking leave, he was trying really hard to impress me so he sent me flowers to my work all the way from Miami FL and kept it a complete surprise. Probably the sweetest gesture he has ever done for me.” Herrick & Lupita Vasck Tennesse and Florida

“He sent me a black rose, preserved in platinum, with a note for Valentine's Day. He also sent a bouquet of my favorite flowers, which I preserved as potpourri, but it was the rose that stuck. It was something permanent, something thoughtful, for when we were children he used to think of me as his "black rose" because I was always dressed in black. And he and I were always in love. We've been married happily since then, and every year for our anniversary we add a new unique preserved rose to our collection.” Kristov & Theresa Dorney- New York
“My husband worked on Valentine’s Day last year. After he got off he made a bunch of stops to find all my favorite foods! He came home and cooked a fantastic meal! He also got me a beautiful bracelet that said mom since I was pregnant! On our first Valentine’s Day he was deployed so he sent flowers, chocolate and a stuffed bear to my work! ” Jeremy & Sabrina Ohio and California
“He took me on a 100% surprise trip. Blindfolded me in the car and drove to Reno. We lived in Sacramento at the time. When we got there he had reserved this super amazing suite. We just enjoyed the weekend with no real agenda.” Matt & Claudia- Tennessee
“When my husband was in Iraq a few years ago, he had 2 huge bouquets of flowers and a teddy bear delivered to our daughter’s daycare where I worked - one bouquet for me, the other and the bear for our daughter. It meant so much to both of us that he thought of us from over 6000 miles away!” Opha & Melissa Keith – Ohio

Inexpensive Valentine Date Ideas You don’t have to spend a lot of money to give that special person in your life a great Valentine’s Day! Sometimes it is the small things that end up creating the best memories. So, if you want to celebrate Valentine’s Day on a budget, look no more. I have some great ideas that will be sure to put a smile on your loved ones face.
Place “Why I love you” notes all over the house. Valentine’s Day is about love. Why not use the day to tell your partner all the reasons why you love them. It would be an amazing surprise to come home to. This is a guaranteed way to put a huge grin on their face for the entire day.
Celebrate Valentine’s Day AFTER Valentine’s Day. Tight on money but want to buy your love bug a box of chocolates? Tell them you want to celebrate the special day on the 15th instead! All of the goodies get marked way down the day after. Anyone that loves you will happily accept the candies a day after.
Go on a treasure hunt! It would be a fun treat to spend the day darting around town on an unexpected treasure hunt. Leave little clues and notes for them to discover. Think of a sweet little gift for them to find at the very end of it. It will be so much fun watching your loved one trying to figure out all of the clues!
Go on a picnic! Cooking your sweetheart a meal is a classic move. Why not spice things up a bit by packing it into a picnic basket and going to a beautiful park for a candle light picnic under the stars. Don’t have a park nearby? Try and set up an adorable living room fort like you’re kids again. Dig out those Christmas lights and make the area special.
Spa Night! Who doesn’t love a good massage? Dig up your favorite face mask and lotion and pamper each other. It is such a sweet and special gesture.
Make some art. Being able to sit down and paint a picture that you can have forever would be incredibly special. Every time you look at the picture hanging in your home, the memories of that night together will flood back. No matter what it ends up looking like, it will be amazing because you made it together. 9

Dealing with Deployment by Alex Zapetis
They say when your spouse deploys that the first few weeks are the hardest. Currently, that is where I am at in my husband’s deployment. I’m in the dreaded first few weeks. I’m not even going to lie or sugar coat it, I am a complete mess. I never knew it was possible that a bottle of mouthwash could make me bawl my eyes out, but I’m here to tell you that it can. Especially when your husband had just used it before he left, and it hits you that you won’t see him using it again for 9 months. It is the small things that I find to be hitting me like a bus. I am trying to get into a new routine and find my new normal. I’ve been told that helps. In all honesty though, all I have been wanting to do lately is crawl into bed and cry. I kind of feel like I have a dark cloud over me and my heart feels completely shattered. I often find myself wondering how other military spouses make this look so easy. The day he left was easily one of the toughest moments of my life so far.
I am extremely lucky to have family only living a few hours away from me. Deep down I know that I am going to need a lot of help over the next few months. I plan on going down to visit often and let my two boys really get to know their family. One disadvantage of the military lifestyle is that your children don’t get to see their extended family a lot, so I’m going to use this extra time I have now to change that. It will also be really nice to be able to vent to people whenever I am feeling really low. I know there will be times that I need a break, so I am happily going to accept the help. I have found that a way that helps me cope with my husband being away is thinking about all the fun things that we are going to get to do when he gets back. Before he left, we sat down and talked about our future. One thing we talked about was vacations that we want to go on when he returns. I now have something I can sit down and plan a few months down the road. Anything that is going to keep me busy and my mind off things is a huge plus. Hopefully by this time next month, I will be kicking this deployment’s butt. For my kids’ sake, I plan on only giving myself a few more days to feel really upset and down. They are too young to understand where their Daddy is, but they can understand that Mommy has been crying a lot more than usual. I need to make these next 9 months as normal as possible for them, so I have to get happier for them. They are going to help me through this deployment so much, and they don’t even realize it. 14

MyCAA Scholarship Program by Jennifer Hartman The My Career Advancement Account (MyCAA) Scholarship Program is a DOD educational workforce development program that provides up to $4,000 of financial assistance to eligible military spouses who are pursuing licenses, certificates, certifications or Associates degrees in a portable career field and occupation. Waivers will be available for spouses up to the total maximum assistance of $4,000. Launched in November 2007 as a joint demonstration project with the Department of Labor, the MyCAA program was an immediate hit. The original intent of the program was to equip spouses of junior service personnel for portable careers. Initially available in eight states, the program expanded worldwide in March 2009—now overseen by the Department of Defense (DoD)—and it originally included all pay grades and offered more extensive education choices. Currently, military spouses meeting the following criteria are eligible to participate in the MyCAA Scholarship program: Spouses of service members on Active Duty, under Title 10 orders; and spouses of service members with pay grades of E1 through E-5, W1 through W-2, and O-1 through O-2. National Guard and Reserve spouses require that the service member must be on active duty for their spouses to be eligible. Although the original concept was a huge success, there simply was not enough funding anticipated with an overwhelming demand. Even with the revision of the program in 2010, resulting in new rank restrictions and funding limits, a large number of military spouses can still enjoy a great opportunity to get the high demand portable skills training they need to get hired. It is expected that some corporations and private businesses will also step up and provide funding sources for those not eligible for MyCAA financial awards benefits. Military One Source counselors play a large role in assisting all spouses in getting the funding they need to complete their education choices by educating them on the DoD’s financial aid support as well as directing them to other available options. The focus of MyCAA is on acquiring licenses, certificates, certifications, or Associates degrees which will lead to portable, in-demand jobs. Prospective participants in the program are able to choose from a wide variety of courses in healthcare, business, IT, trades, finance, construction, animal services, hospitality and more. The list of schools and other education entities participating in the program is long; and many of them will likely be adding course offerings as future interest warrants.
“This program made it possible for me to take college classes. Especially in my situation, as I’m a stay at home mom with three kids, we’d never be able to afford me taking classes.”
Most certificate and certification programs can be completed well within a 12-month time frame—some in less than 3 or 4 months depending on the student’s own study discipline. Courses generally are online, a feature that has worked out extremely well for spouses currently in the program. The online, self-paced model alleviates the fear of not being able to complete a course due to Permanent Change of Station (PCS), which means family relocation in most instances. Based on the duration of where the spouse is located, many schools offer in classroom and/or Live Online classes that can be taken on campus or from the comfort of one’s home in a matter of weeks, such as Austin Peay State University right here in Clarksville, TN. “...my husband who is deployed has been my biggest inspiration. I am so proud to tell my friends and family that I’m in school. I’m still able to do all the things that I did before, but now I have a goal. I wait until my son goes to bed; I go online and start my class. I take a couple hours here and there and it’s going great. This program is the best thing that has happened to me since I’ve had my son. I never thought something like this would fit into my military wife lifestyle...,” says a current MyCAA Military Spouse Participant. Crystal Ramos of Roseville, California is currently enrolled in the Professional in Human Resources Exam Prep course. She says the MyCAA program is easy to navigate and a great opportunity and feels confident she will pass the exam after taking her course.
“This program is the best thing that has happened to me since I’ve had my son. I never thought something like this would fit into my military wife lifestyle...,”
KayLee Myers has always wanted to work in a veterinary office. However, that dream seemed impossible between money, her children, and constant moves due to her husband’s active duty service in the Air Force. The Myers have moved to three different states in the past 7 years, currently living in Colorado Springs, Colorado. KayLee was able to make her career dream a reality through the MyCAA program and online Veterinary Office Management courses.
“The online classes have been a life saver. Without the ease and convenience of being able to get on a computer whenever, this wouldn’t be possible,” says Myers. She goes on to say, “I think the MyCAA is a great program. This program made it possible for me to take college classes. Especially in my situation, as I’m a stay at home mom with three kids, we’d never be able to afford me taking classes.” Myers is certain her course will help better prepare her to enter the workforce with confidence. She should receive her completion certificate sometime within the year, something she says will open doors that may have been closed to her in the past. Here we are, nearly a month into the New Year. As a personal trainer, I have to ask, how are those resolutions going? After ten years in the business, I think I have a pretty good idea. Resolutions do not work. Period. End of Story. The word “year” kills any and all hope to succeed. We set resolutions for an entire 12 months. If it’s an entire year, it has to be a big goal. We need to accomplish a lot in that extended period of time. The goal can completely overwhelm you by springtime. This year I do not want you to create resolutions. I want CONFIDENCE! Ed Mylett, host of a popular podcast, said, “Confidence is the process of keeping promises to yourself”. Ever tried to create confidence for a full year? It’s called a New Year’s Resolution. So here’s the million-dollar question I get every December & January, “What can I do differently?”. Start small. Do not aim for 12 months. The secret to any and all success… fitness, career, family…. can be found in your daily routine. Aim for one day at a time Here are 4 of my favorite, yet simple, promises to keep each day: 1)
Water
The amount of people who look past this simple daily task that has a ton of weight loss and wellness benefits amazes me. Water helps dissolve minerals and nutrients, making them more accessible to the body. It also helps remove waste products. Water is essential for the kidneys to function. If the kidneys do not function properly, waste products and excess fluid can build up inside the body. Water drinking tips: • •
Aim for 64-88oz of water to start Go out and buy a 20-28oz water bottle to keep with you
2)
Elimination
At the start of the year, most Resolutions will begin with “I am giving up carbs, chocolate, and alcohol”. That is a lot to give up for an extended period of time. Instead of coming out guns blazing, try to eliminate a poor nutrition choice you do daily. You should treat yourself occasionally, not every single day. Some daily elimination ideas: • • • • 23
Coffee creamer and/or Starbucks etc. Wine or alcohol Handful of M&Ms or other sweets Eating out
3)
Move
You do not, I repeat, you do not need to run out and attempt to kill yourself on the treadmill for an hour every day. The risk of injury and lack of sustainability increases. I encourage people new to the exercise game to aim for 4-5 small daily exercises that can be done at the foot of your bed. Sample Exercises: • • • • •
Wall Sit Push-Up Bicycle Plank Bridge
Try 1 minute per exercise and repeat 3-4 times.
4)
Vegetables
We heard it all the time as kids, “Eat your vegetables”. Most adults fail to get at least 1 serving of vegetables in a day. Please do not underestimate the benefits of simply adding these to your diet. Top 3 vegetables you should be eating: • • •
Spinach Asparagus Sweet Potato

2/502 Vietnam Memorial This monument is to remember the brave soldiers of the 2/502 Infantry Regiment that lost their lives serving in the Vietnam War. The 502nd Infantry Regiment is an airborne infantry regiment in the United States Army. The regiment was created shortly after the US entered into World War II. They were assigned to the 101st Airborne Division here at Fort Campbell. It is said that it is one of the most decorated formations of the U.S. Army. The regiment saw a lot of action in World War II and was deactivated in 1945. It was reactivated in 1956. The 502nd Infantry then joined the Vietnam War. They entered into the Vietnam War in April of 1965. The 1st Brigade was deployed to Vietnam to relieve the 173rd Airborne Brigade As the fight continued to grow, both units stayed. 2/502 was under the command of the flamboyant LTC Hank “The Gunfighter" Emerson. By the end of the war, 2nd Battalion served almost seven years in Vietnam. By the time they came home, they earned 27 campaign streamers and two Presidential Unit Citations.

Three 2nd Battalion soldiers earned the Medal of Honor. Specialist Dale E. Wayrynen, Private First Class Milton A. Lee, and Corporal Frank R. Fratellenico. The soldiers began their journey home in December of 1971. The division was officially fully welcomed home on April 6th, 1972. We will never forget the amazing soldiers that gave the ultimate sacrifice to defend this country. May they rest in peace.
