Life expectancy would grow by leaps and bounds if green vegetables smelled as good as bacon. ~Doug Larson We can’t make everything smell or taste as good as bacon, but what we can do is provide you plenty of information on how to stay healthy physically, financially and spiritually. Whether your goal is to get in shape, get out of debt or work on your character, it’s never too late to begin creating healthy habits. Simply making the choice to be better today than you were yesterday starts you on the journey to achieving a healthier lifestyle. Fort Campbell Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) sports season is in full swing. Find out all the opportunities from soccer and softball to flag football and racquetball by checking out the new MWR Intramural and Recreation Sports Calendar. Outdoor Recreation’s Aquatics and Adventure programs work diligently to provide Soldiers numerous opportunities to stay active. Reap the benefits of swimming at Gardner Indoor Pool. After undergoing recent repairs and renovations Gardner is ready to accommodate all your swimming needs. The Adventure program has a variety of activities to include hiking, canoeing and rock climbing to keep you moving all month long. Nutrition is an important element in living a healthy lifestyle. Are you getting everything you need from the foods you eat? Many of us think we are eating healthy; however, we may be lacking many key vitamins and minerals. Find out how adding a multivitamin or supplements can help you become healthier and sexier. Financial stress can have a large impact on your physical and mental health and fitness. To encourage healthy financial habits MWR Army Community Service Financial Readiness program offers seminars to teach you “How Good Life Can Be Without Breaking the Bank”. We have covered physical and financial health, now what about spiritual? Strength of character is one of the most important aspects of life. Our inner strengths and morals guide us to make decisions every day. So what defines character? What are the characteristics of a strong person? At one time or another we have all been part of a team and the most important characteristic to me is loyalty. Chaplain Miller explores this important trait and why “Loyalty is a Royal Asset”. As always, I welcome your input, opinion and advice on what you would like to see featured in the BOSS Life magazine. Feel free to contact me at bosslifeeditor@fortcampbellmwr.com.

Great benefits come from swimming by Tara Goodson SWIMMING IS NOT JUST A RECREATIONAL SPORT, BUT one of the most beneficial workouts. It’s advantageous for people of any age, and one can start swimming anytime. Also, you don’t need to invest in expensive equipment to swim; all you need is a swimsuit and a towel. Swimming is very soothing, and can be done as a group activity, or by your self. Swimming is a great activity that can be continued for a lifetime. It works nearly every muscle in your body and will help you build your endurance, cardiovascular fitness and overall strength. Just like changing up your workout in the gym, make sure you do a variety of strokes to work each muscle group. Swimming is also considered to be one of the safest exercises. Swimming, unlike walking or jogging, doesn't put pressure on the joints, and the buoyancy of water cushions the body and doesn't stress the muscles or joints. Doesn’t that sound like a welcome relief to your knees and back? Another benefit is a longer life span due to the increased cardiovascular fitness and flexibility. Swimming is also excellent for cross-training. One can swim to warm up before running, weight lifting or any other type of training, or go for a swim after a workout session to cool off the body. In addition to cardio benefits, swimming provides flexibility, muscle strength and endurance, as moving in water needs more strength compared to other exercises. Swimming helps to tone the body and to build lean and flexible muscles, unlike the hard muscles one develops from weight training. There is a psychological benefit to swimming as well, if you allow it to occur. Relax and swim at a leisurely pace. Let your mind wander, focusing on the rhythm of your stroke. This form of meditation can help you gain a feeling of well-being, and sense of peace. Many swimmers find an indirect benefit from swimming. They develop life skills such as sportsmanship, time-management, self-discipline, goal-setting, and an increased sense of self-worth through their participation in the sport. Swimmers seem to do better in school, in general terms, than non-swimmers as a group. You don’t have to stick to just lap swimming to get a great work out. Why don’t you try a few of these options? • Water Walking: Moving forward, backward, and sideways, using regular, short, quick, or long steps, in waist-deep or chest-deep water. • Water Aerobics: Full body rhythmic exercises conducted in shallow and/or deep water for 20 minutes or more, designed to provide cardiovascular benefits. •Water Toning/Strength Toning: Upper and lower body moves designed to strengthen, firm, and sculpt the muscles by using the resistance of the water and/or water exercise equipment. • Flexibility Training: Large move ments using each body part's full

range of motion, along with full body stretches. • Water Yoga & Relaxation: Gentle, easy-flowing moves using the water as a relaxation medium. • Deep Water Running: Flotation devices are used to simulate land running in the water where the feet do not touch the bottom of the pool. Various running styles, drills, and methods can be used. • Wall Exercise (deep or shallow): Using the pool wall for support to isolate various body parts. The health benefits earned from swimming are long term. If you need to lose weight, swimming is a great calorie burner, as it is a full body workout. Swimming burns 3 calories a mile per pound, so if you are 150lbs in weight, you can burn 900 calories in just 30 minutes! The breaststroke and freestyle are the preferred style for calorie burning. Just make sure you don’t consume as many calories as Michael Phelps, remember he trains professionally and requires more calories than the average person. Some additional tips to keep your fitness routine from going stale include; swim at least three times a week for optimal results, improve your technique (good technique slow pace vs. poor technique fast pace), and challenge yourself at least one session a week with drills or exercise equipment specific for swimming. After more than a year of closure due to extended renovations and repairs, Gardner Indoor Pool is now operational! Located at 2191 Kentucky Avenue, near Hooper Bowling Center, and with the water temperature at a balmy 84, it’s the perfect place to continue your fitness plan while we wait out the rainy spring weather. Everything from the heating and ventilation systems, bath house and a fresh coat of paint has made this over 50 year old pool look new! The staff at Gardner is pleased to offer a variety of classes in March. Check out the current schedule at www.fortcampbellmwr.com or call (270) 798-6310. Whether you need swim classes, want to learn to lifeguard or are interested in becoming a water safety instructor there is a class to meet your needs. Gardner also offers Unit training classes upon request. Simply download the form from the Fort Campbell MWR website mentioned earlier and fax it to (931) 431-9703 or drop it off at the pool. You can purchase a punch card for $17 that will let you swim ten times with no expiration date, or choose between two passes. $25 will buy you an individual one month pass and $80 will get you a four month pass. What a deal! If you want to host a pool party you can make a reservation for only $10 and pay the remainder by the party date. Times are reserved in two hour blocks and can accommodate 25 to 225 people! Once the weather warms up, you will have two additional pools to choose from for your swimming sessions. Baldanado and Dolan Pools also had renovations and repairs done this last year. A new bath house was added to both locations along with improved filtration systems. Dolan is now more Family friendly with the Splash Pad play area that has been installed. So whether you jump in now or wait for the hot sultry weather, there is no better place to get your aquatic exercise and continued health benefits than your local pools.

Supplements for a Healthier, Sexier You Replace nutrients missing in your diet by Charlene Mazur BEING HEALTHY IS A FINE BALANCE OF PHYSICAL, mental, and social well-being, not merely the lack of disease or illness. Staying healthy can at times feel like a full time job, however you would be amazed at how much better you could feel just by making minor adjustments, such as adding a multivitamin or supplements to your diet. This simple act can help you feel healthier, more focused and even sexier, because let’s not forget, 50% of being sexy is attitude. The majority of my knowledge on supplements comes from years of research. Being diagnosed at age 15 with Hypoglycemia and then later in my 20's being diagnosed with OAS (Oral Allergy Syndrome), I was unable to eat many foods with the nutrients that I needed. I absorbed much knowledge on the subject of nutrition and supplements while working at GNC. I later became a Certified Personal Trainer and soon began to participate in figure competitions. I was coached by well known and highly qualified nutritionists, trainers and subject matter experts within the industry. While I have no certificates I do have wisdom from years of experience. During periods of training and deployment, when Meals, Ready-to-Eat (MRE) are served more often than not, you may not be getting all the vitamins and nutrients you need to be at your best. The right supplements can boost your immune system, help your heart and improve your sex life! However, it can be harmful if the wrong supplements are taken. It’s always best to research and consult your physician before adding supplements to your diet, especially if you are on prescribed medication. Men and women have different needs when it comes to supplements. There is however, one supplement in particular that both should be taking daily regardless of their dietary needs. This is a high quality, broad-spectrum multivitamin and mineral supplement taken once per day. After basic nutritional requirements are supported, supplements may be used to target specific needs and health conditions. Whatever your body doesn’t need it will simply release as waste. Key supplements to enhance your healthy and sexy body are listed below. Majority of the products listed below can be found in your local GNC store (located inside the main PX mall), a variety of other health stores or possibly your supermarket or pharmacy. Be sure to research each product prior to consumption, don’t rely on hearsay and only take the recommended amount. Be sure to start with the basics of a high quality, broad-spectrum multivitamin. Many of the vitamins and minerals listed can be found in a variety of foods. I suggest that you take a look at your diet first to see where improvements can be made and follow up with supplements as needed. Follow these guidelines along with a clean diet and consistent exercise regimen and you will be a healthier, sexier you in no time!

Men B-6: Nutritional fighter against prostate enlargement, cardiovascular and heart disease. The healthier you are the better you’ll feel. Vitamin D: For cardiovascular health. A man always needs to have a good heart. Branched Chain Amino Acids: Improve exercise performance and reduce muscle breakdown, perfect for showing off in the weight room. Glucosamine: For healthy joints (keeps you spry). Zinc: Helps prevent sexual impotence or depressed immune systems which may be responsible for hair loss.

Women Alpha Lipoic Acid, ALA: Supports Antioxidant Regeneration (keeps you young and healthy). Vitamin A: Antioxidant and for preventing Breast Cancer (keeps skin healthy-moderation is key, overuse may be toxic) Lutein: Antioxidant that helps fight blindness and keeps the breast and cervix tissues healthy. Improves skin hydration, elasticity and slows down the aging process-gives you a healthy youthful glow. Vitamin E: Targets free radicals (perfect supplement for beauty), prevents breast lumps, treats canker sores and vaginal dryness.

Both B Vitamins: Encompasses many levels to include more energy (to promote a kindred spirit), metabolism, nerve health and more. Vitamin C: Antioxidant, Healthy Blood, Iron Absorption, prevents Arterial Disease, Bladder Infections and Colds. Calcium: Healthy bones and teeth, improve posture and better smile. Who doesn’t love a sexy smile! Vitamin D: For Calcium Absorption. Omega-3, 6 and/or 9: Lowers risk of heart condition, regulates appetite, accelerates fat burning, make your skin glow and hair shine. Coenzyme Q10: Powerful antioxidant to keep you looking young. Conjugated Linoleic Acid/CLA: Promotes fat loss and the growth of lean muscle tissue. Coconut oil: Provides lauric acid, which converts to the fatty acid monolaurin in the body. Monolaurin has adverse effects on a variety of microorganisms including bacteria, yeast, fungi, and enveloped viruses. Bee Pollen: Scientists suggest bee pollen is a complete food providing proteins, vitamins, minerals and enzymes.

Loyalty is a Royal Asset by Chaplain (Col) Alvin E. Miller ONE OF THE MOST PRECIOUS and finest jewels in the entire world is loyalty. Loyalty is a rare gem that can only be found on the mountain top of trust and in deep trenches of integrity. Throughout history, many kings, queens, military leaders, political advocates, religious pundits, and even tyrants have sought to kidnap the throne of loyalty; yet, they were unable to capture the awesome splendor and angelic beauty of loyalty, because their motives were laced with pride, greed, and selfish ambitions. Loyalty is a royal asset that is extended to everyone; however, only few are willing to make the commitment and sacrifice to endure the hardship that comes along with such a priceless jewel. When a person is loyal to someone or something, it means he or she will stand for the cause that stimulates loyalty regardless of weather conditions, geographical location, crisis, the crowd in the midst or even death! Loyalty has no hidden agenda; it is true and genuine no matter where it goes. Loyalty is never self-centered and is believed to be the best friend trust will ever have. Loyalty is priceless; you cannot purchase it with silver, gold, diamonds, or fame. Its name can never be tarnished by character flaws because it will prove itself over and over with genuine commitment. Loyalty is more solid than any steel and no earthquake regardless of size can shake it from its foundation. Loyalty is a royal asset because it is the fire that stimulates others to trust and to believe in you. Many people desire to own this most valuable and royal asset, but only a few embrace it. Without Loyalty,

a person becomes like a note without a sound. Loyalty validates a person’s self-worth and reaffirms his or her integrity throughout life . . . it is the consistent wind that blows the clouds in and out on rainy days so the sun can array us with its delightful light. Loyalty is the ‘gatekeeper’ to the other core values: none of them can celebrate as real champions without Loyalty! Loyalty strives to keep peace, but if needs be, it can transform into a professional warrior for the security of a loving people, a grateful nation, and the preservation of freedom that gives hope to generations to come. Loyalty will defend its values with the utmost care and compassion for human life. Loyalty is never slack concerning it promises; it will always deliver its goods to its Families and friends no matter where they are located in the world. Loyalty has no fear of death nor will it brag about its own success. When loyalty opens it mouth to speak, humility is always the main dialect. Although it has the potential to speak various languages, humility is the primary language of loyalty. Humility is a language that is universal and people throughout the world understand it and echo kind words for such wonderful and beautiful expressions kindness. Loyalty thrives on shining the spotlight on others rather than itself. One of the things I admire about loyalty is the fact that loyalty will escort you to your destination and remain long after you have departed the scene. Loyalty will greet you with integrity in the morning and watch over you at night with honesty. Loyalty will embrace you in your youthful years with joy and hope and escort you in your ripened years with peace and prosperity. For who can be more true and faithful than loyalty? This is why ‘Loyalty is a Royal Asset!’
