6th Year and Running: USO hosts 10 Miler Do you think you can take on March’s Eagle Challenge Fitness Tour event? On Saturday, March 18, the USO will host its sixth Annual USO 10 Miler race event, including a 10 mile race, a 5K, and a free Fun Run. The races will start and finish at Fort Campbell MWR’s Destiny Park, outside of Gate 10 and across from the horse stables. • Runners and walkers can expect typical race amenities, including: • Water and electrolyte replacement on the course and at the finish line • Carbohydrate and protein snacks at the finish line • A safe, marked, and timed course. This year’s event will increase the amount of course support, and encourage the cheering crowds to stay later to support those that are on the course longer.

New in 2017 is a VIP Village. Only 25 runners will have an opportunity to upgrade their experience with an expanded amenities package. The premium amenities include: • A climate-controlled lounge with private bathrooms • Pre-race continental breakfast • Post-race brunch • Gear check in • A well-stocked USO duffel bag • A chance to win a 2018 USO Ten Miler entry with VIP pass.

“The USO Ten Miler is our biggest fundraiser of the year, but it is also one of the largest programs we host. We continue to expand the Free Fun Run and Kid’s Zone to give parents something to do with the kids,” said Kari Moore, USO Center Director. She also reminded that while the Fun Run is free, registration is required. To register for the event, please visit active.com/fort-campbell-ky/running/distance-running-races/6th-annual-uso-ten-miler-5k-and-fun-run-2017. If you’d like to participate in the event, but aren’t interested in running or walking, consider competing for the Spirit Award, as voted on by the runners at the finish line. The mission of each Spirit Team is to entertain and distract the runners for the 30 seconds that each person passes your location; Spirit Teams can play music, bring noise makers, make signs, and otherwise delight the runners. For more information about the event, including Spirit Team details, please email Kari at kmoore@uso.org.

I I really do.

Farewells by Ramon M. Maisonet, Employee Assistance Program

I hate them, not because I think the farewell comments people make about you are insincere. I hate them because, for me, they signal the end of a chapter in life–and this chapter called Fort Campbell has been really good for me. In the past eight years, I have encountered some incredible people who are the very reasons why this community is so alive and vibrant. I have had the opportunity to work alongside the most skilled professionals, and it has helped me raise my own level of competence. I have also cried with and alongside those who have been hit with adversity–having to overcome the most difficult of circumstances. But you know what? Those stories of resilience are also your story.

Rule No. 1: Relationships Matter

Rule No. 2: Move Forward

I have learned that while you can love what you do for a living, your job won’t take care of you when you’re sick. Your friends and Family will. Your career is something that you will eventually have to give up when you physically cannot do it anymore, but you know who will be there when you eventually retire? Every person that you have invested in your time into. Gary Smalley said it best, “Life is all about relationships; the rest is just details.

Just like a chapter doesn’t define the whole story of a book, no one mistake defines the destiny of your life. If you have made a mistake (or in my case, dozens of them), smile, press forward and keep turning the pages, you’ll get there.

Rule No. 3: Chocolate

Rule No. 4: This is not just chance

Remember that when life challenges you with some of its toughest questions…chocolate is almost, always the answer!

It’s not a coincidence that you are stationed or work at Fort Campbell. You are exactly where you are now, with every skill, trait and leadership ability, because they all add up to how you can make the biggest difference with your position in this community.

Rule No. 5: You Matter What you do makes a difference. No matter how trivial it is to you, it all matters. Your smile, your intentions, your attitude, your words, your stories and most importantly, how you treat others. Don’t ever let anyone convince you that you don’t make a difference–because you do!

Fort Campbell, thank you! Thank you for some of the very best laughs in my personal life. Thank you for some of the best encounters in my professional endeavors. This community will always be in my heart, and Fort Campbell will always be my home. So farewell my friends. Rock on and continue to “Rendezvous with Destiny!” 18

Readiness Essentials for Army Leaders by Heather Leiby

Foundations is designed to be a foundational course on Family Readiness and Family Readiness Groups. The course covers theDepartment of Defense definition of Family Readiness and how the Army FRG can assist commanders in meeting their mission of executing a unit Family Readiness program. The training provides basic information on the different roles within the FRG from the command team to the different volunteer positions. There are three courses designed for FRG volunteers: FRG Leader, Key Contact, and Informal Funds Custodian. The FRG Leader course is a designed to provide volunteer FRG leaders with an understanding of their roles and responsibilities within the FRG. The focus of the training is on the volunteers and how they can execute the commander’s vision of the FRG. From tips on how to get started to how best to leverage different communication modalities, FRG leaders will leave the course with the knowledge needed to begin implementing the mission essential tasks associated with the FRG. Also included in the new training package is the REAL Smart Book. This book is a compilation of resources, best practices and templates needed to actively run and manage the FRG. The Smart Book can act as the FRG Binder with editable templates for SOPs, position descriptions, checklists, and resources. The training is designed to have participants roll up their sleeves and delve into the Smart Book, ensuring individuals are familiar with the resources available to assist them in their mission.

Command Team is targeted towards company commanders and 1st SGTs, but is also informative for brigade and battalion commanders. This course delineates the roles and responsibilities of the command team regarding how to leverage the FRG to execute the Family Readiness mission. The Family Readiness Liaison (FRL) course is designed to prepare Soldiers who are appointed as FRLs to assist with the operational, logistical, and administrative aspects of the FRG. As a liaison between the command and the FRG volunteer, the FRL needs to know the ins and outs of the FRG and how their role can assist both the command and the volunteers. Upon completion of the course the FRL will have an understanding of their role in the FRG and how to assist with execution of the FRG mission. The Key Contact and Informal Funds Custodian Training are each hour courses dedicated to the specific volunteer roles within the FRG. They are given tips and techniques for executing the role as well as practical exercises and role playing scenarios in order to help volunteers better understand their role in the FRG. While the structure of the FRG remains intact the intent of the training is to emphasize the mission essential tasks associated with the FRG, help all involved understand that the FRG is a commander’s program and it is only through the commander’s vision and direction that the FRG mission is executed. Înterested in having a voice in the new training for FRGs? Please contact your local ACS MD & SSO office at 270-798-3849 or 270-798-2158 to find out when they will be offering the pilot on your installation.
