E-Dating 101: Dos and Dont’s of E-Dating in the 21st Century by Keri McPeak How many times have you gone on a date and thought you made a connection, only to find out they were not what you are looking for? Perhaps you are shy and it takes nothing short of a miracle for you to approach someone. None of this means you can’t have an active social life. It is the 21st Century; make the most of it and e-date! Did you know that 1 out of 4 people participate in online dating? In the past few years e-dating has become vastly popular and is now widely accepted. Whenever you go on a date, no matter how that date was arranged, you are throwing the dice and ultimately hoping you make a connection with someone. E-dating doesn’t change the frustrations associated with those of traditional dating, however, if done properly e-dating can increase your opportunities of meeting someone by keeping your social calendar filled. A couple of benefits of e-dating include the ability to talk to multiple people at one time and being able to pre-screen potential dates. Try doing that at a bar! Let’s admit it, when you have been drinking sometimes the screening process gets distorted. Even if you are drinking while chatting up your latest interest on line, at least through

7

e-dating you can avoid making mistakes you will regret the next day. E-dating allows you to re-evaluate your potential partner during sober daylight hours before taking the plunge. Leave your beer goggles at home and reduce the coyote ugly effect by taking some simple, practical, and real-world strategies to ensure your e-dating experience is maximized.

Step 1: Selecting an E-dating Service Do: Do your research. Pick a dating site that has a large number of members. Most sites will let you search without having to sign-up. If your search returns several hundred “matches” then that is likely a good start. Some sites are free while other charge. Most will let you create a profile and respond to people’s inquiries for free. You only have to pay when you want to contact a person. Do: Go with the site where members disclose the kind of information you feel is important for selecting potential matches. There are specific e-dating services available for those who wish to be matched up with people who share same religious or ethnical backgrounds. In instances where specific requirements are desired it is important to pay attention to the site’s reputation and the type of people it tends to attract.

www.fortcampbellmwr.com Do: Contact multiple people at one time. This does not mean that you send a mass email out. Don’t: Get your hopes too high. The reality is that you truly know nothing about your match except what they have chosen to answer. The goal at this point is to identify and contact people who could be potential dates. Don’t: Just send a “wink.” More than likely you will not get a response back. Don’t: Give your full name, phone number, or email address. Be cautious and avoid giving away personal information until you feel comfortable with the other person.

Step 2: Setting up an Account Do: Before finalizing the set-up process review and adjust your security settings. There is nothing worse than having your information out there for everyone to see or possibly misuse. Do: When you choose your screen name, try to be original. This is a great opportunity to incorporate your personality. There are plenty of names you can use to show your sense of humor, interests, or intellect. Don’t: As obvious as it may seem, do not use your actual name as your screen name. It is also a good idea to avoid using girl, chick, man, guy or any derivatives as well as cutesy (i.e. SillyKitty or FunkyMonkey) names for your screen name.

Step 5: Respond…Or Don’t Do: It’s your prerogative on whether you decide to respond. If you send out a message and think it is only fair to receive one back, then you should do the same; even it is to say “no thanks.”

Step 3: Writing Your Profile Do: Your main profile picture should be a current photo of yourself. Although you may have been really fly several years ago, I guarantee you will not be invited for a second meeting if you do not portray yourself honestly. Try to avoid putting a posed picture or professional head shot up. Do: If the site allows for multiple pictures to be posted, it’s best to include a variety of pictures of yourself. This is another great opportunity to show your interests. Pictures should be clear enough to see who is who but not necessarily professional quality. Do: Be honest when filling out the multiple choice and short answer questions that generate your basic information and preferences such as height, weight, religion, age, race, and gender. Do: If you are serious about getting something positive out of e-dating, put some thought into your profile and think of the profile as an advertisement for yourself. Like the screen name, the tag line is important and needs to catch the attention of those who are searching for someone like you. Do: Before you write your profile, check out the competition and make sure your answers are original and different from the majority. Do: Make sure you use spell check. You don’t have to answer every question seriously. If a question is stupid, say so and use it as an opportunity to show more of your personality. Include humor, originality, personality, and confidence when talking about yourself and what you are looking for in a partner. Don’t: If you have a pet or kid you definitely want to mention that in your profile but not necessarily include pictures of them on your main profile. Don’t: Include pictures of you with your ex. Don’t: It is not recommended to indicate your income. Don’t: Do not confuse the above with arrogance, clichés, or cheesiness. These are quick ways to ensure your profile is skipped.

Step 4: Make Contact Do: When contacting someone make sure to send them a personal message that includes compliments and showcases your personality. Do: The length of the initial contact should not be too short, or too long. Take the time to respond to each person who peaks your interest.

Step 6: The Email Dialogue Do: It takes two to tango and unless you like to have a conversation with yourself take the initiative to send an email. Be witty, original, and come up with sincere questions. Do: Set up a special email account that you use for e-dating, especially if your regular email has identifying information, like your name. Don’t: One liners and limited questions won’t make the cut. In the beginning you should avoid questions regarding exes, politics, personal issues, relationships, or other topics that may make people feel awkward.

Step 7: The Phone Call Do: Once you feel comfortable with whomever you are corresponding with, set up a time when you can talk to each other on the phone. Don’t: Some people are just not ones to talk on the phone so you should give them the benefit of the doubt and don’t assume they are not interested. However, if your instincts are telling you that there is something off about this person, then by all means follow your instincts.

Step 8: The Meeting Do: Keep it casual and start with coffee or lunch. If the initial meeting goes well, make plans to go out again. Until you feel really comfortable, plan dates that allow you to meet in public places. Do: It is also a good idea to let friends and Family know where you are going and who will be with you. Do: Make sure you use common sense, follow your instincts, proceed with caution, and not to create unrealistic or unattainable expectations. Don’t: Don’t let someone you’ve never met pick you up in a car. Don’t: If you go for drinks, be responsible and make sure you do not drink too much and never leave your beverage unattended.

Relieving Stress Laugh

by Katherine Kolodzie

Whether reading a good joke, watching a funny video, or sitting down at a comedy club, laughter is a great stress-reliever at the end of a long day. Check out an over-the-top comedy on DVD at R.F. Sink Library or visit D.W. Recreation Center where you have a choice of a variety of movies for free, which you can view on one of their many large screen televisions. Call (270) 798-7446 for more information about D.W. Recreation Center.

Everyone experiences stress. This stress has the potential to become overwhelming and pose a risk to our friendships, professional relationships and personal health. Each of us has the ability to manage our stress. Let’s look at some ways to keep our stress levels in check.

S T R E S S

First, create a personal scale of 1-10, where 1 = not stressed and 10 = meltdown level of stress. Anytime you feel stressed, check your scale, if you are at a 5 or above, utilize one of the techniques below to reduce your stress level.

Breathe When we are stressed out, our breathing can become shallower. Take a long, slow, deep inhalation. Next, slowly let out the air while mentally letting go of tension in your body. Do this three times and see how you feel.

Exercise When you exercise, your body releases endorphins and dopamine, giving a quick boost to your mood, in addition to helping work through frustrations. Take time to break a sweat for 20-30 minutes each day. You’ll feel better physically, and your natural moodboosters will keep you pumped up throughout the day. Visit your nearest Physical Fitness Facility, or take a run on the new track at Fryar Stadium.

Reframe the Situation We have choices in how we perceive the things that happen in our lives. If every little thing is throwing you off of your game, take a look around and see if those mountains are really molehills. Life is full of changes and challenges; how well you adapt to change, and how you take on each challenge may be as simple as changing your mindset. Programs like Army Family Team Building offer classes on adapting to change and managing stress. Call (270) 798-4800 for more information on upcoming classes.

Take a Walk Step away for five minutes and take a lap around the block, or the building. Getting a quick change of scenery and fresh air can turn your mood around. With deep breathing and increased blood flow, taking a walk is like hitting a reset button for how you approach a problem.

Take Time for You Give yourself permission to take some time for you. Schedule a massage or spa treatment and just let yourself relax. Massage releases endorphins in your body, increases circulation and is very relaxing. Different types of massages can help with different types of stress. If you hold a lot of tension in your muscles, for example, then you may prefer a hot stone massage or deep tissue bodywork. If you’re new to massage, the flowing, rhythmic strokes of a Swedish massage serve as a great introduction.

Talk It Out Sometimes, all you need is to vent to someone who will simply listen. Chat with a trusted friend, visit a chaplain, or meet up with a Military Family Life Consultant (MFLC). MFLCs are everywhere, and you can air frustrations confidentially, with no records. MFLCs can be reached at (270) 205-1917, or by visiting the Family Resource Center on William C. Lee Road. Chaplains are available at (270) 798-3316. After you’ve tried a stress-management technique, evaluate whether it’s working for you. If you’re still finding you are stressed, find ways to tackle problems that are causing your stress by visiting Army Community Service. “Lots of different things can cause stress; relationships and finances top the list for most people,” says Art Jones, Director of Army Community Service. “At Fort Campbell, we have at least 17 agencies here that can help with stressful issues. Army Community Service is a conduit to help you find the best agency to meet your needs. The goal is to make sure Soldiers, Retirees, DOD Civilians, Contractors and Families can find the right service at the right time, the first time they seek assistance.” Visit the Army Community Service office at 5661 Screaming Eagle Blvd or call the Information and Referral Desk at (270) 798-9322. Offices are open 7:30am – 4:30pm Monday through Friday.

vs The Game is ON! by Daniel Stair GAMING SYSTEMS ARE HIGHLY ENTERTAINING, FUN FOR all ages and let’s be honest, who doesn’t like playing video games! But out of all the gaming systems available, which one should you choose? The two most popular gaming systems in the market right now are Sony’s Playstation 3 (PS3) and Microsoft’s Xbox 360. It's hard to decide between these two because they are both great gaming systems. Personally, I'm a PS3 man it's just what I grew up using. I'm not putting down the Xbox though; it can definitely hold its own in a fight. Let's go through a few aspects of each system, of course starting with my favorite, the PS3. It just does everything! Due to Sony’s success with its Playstation 2 gaming console, Sony created the PS3, which continues to be the best-selling console on the market today. When Sony created the PS3 they vastly improved the hardware and concentrated on expanding online play and multimedia, securing the future of the PS3. Sony has always incorporated its video game consoles with multimedia capabilities and the PS3 is no exception. The PS3 offers audio CD, DVD and Blu-Ray compatibility with additional Wi-Fi, online and web browsing abilities. With its online and web browsing capabilities, the PS3 can compliment any office or workspace and serve as the center for all your entertainment needs. The Playstation store offers hundreds of downloads and free demos like Angry Birds (who doesn't like Angry Birds). Some of the of the best games I have tried include Red Dead Redemption, Heavy Rain, UFC 2010, Uncharted 2, and Call of Duty Black Ops, just to name a few. I could keep going but I would probably name them all. Last but not least you can't forget about the Playstation Move. PlayStation Move is an upcoming motion-sensing game controller platform for the PlayStation 3 (PS3) video game console. It’s so simple to use, just pick up the controller and play, that’s it. The combination of technology from the remote to the camera allows you to see yourself holding or interact with a character right in your living room. I love it and I know you will love it too.

Now, let’s talk about the Xbox 360. The Xbox 360 has made several improvements over its predecessors. The console still provides an extensive library and clear, vibrant graphics, but it now includes built-in Wi-Fi. Older models had challenges with overheating however, the redesigned Xbox includes a larger fan and improved vent system. Microsoft tried to include HD capability and failed in the process. Blue-Ray players hold more information and are cheaper to make. Sorry Xbox Fans! The processor is a little slower than the PS3 and its not 3D compatible. But one great thing about the Xbox 360 is the Kinects. No controller needed just you and the game. Imagine controlling a movie or game with a wave of a hand or the sound of your voice. Exciting isn't it. Some games for the Kinects are Active 2 workout program, Zumba for the ladies, animals for the kids and sports for the guys. One game for the Xbox 360 that PS3 just can’t compete with is the Halo compilation. Halo 3 is the Xbox 360’s bestselling game and has sold an estimated 8.1 million copies. The game is pretty amazing; you just have to see to believe it! Bottom line, PS3 and Xbox 360 are two great systems; it just all depends on what features you want, what you grew up on and of course how much you want to spend. These gaming systems tend to be a little pricey so consider shopping at the main PX Mall to take advantage of their military prices. I say try them both and decide from there. Either way my friends you won't be disappointed. Before you go out and spend your hard earned money stop by Dale Wayrynen Recreation Center, located at 6145 Desert Storm Avenue, and try out their PS3 and XBox 360. For more information about Dale Wayrynen Recreation Center and the games they have available call (270) 798-7446.

Looking for some friendly competition? Come to Dale Wayrynen Recreation Center on April 17 at 2pm for the Call of Duty Black Ops Tournament. This tournament is open to all eligible MWR participants ages 18 and over. Trophies will be awarded to the top three finishers. 14

AH SPRING TIME! SPRING IS A SIGN OF OVERCOMING THE crazy cold weather and embrace a newer warmer season as well as having a spring fever for love. Dating is on everyone’s mind, as well as the burden of breaking the bank. But no worries, Fort Campbell and the local community offer Soldiers plenty of dating activities on a budget. Starting with Fort Campbell, there are plenty of activities that are date friendly as well as easy on the wallet. Hooper Bowling Center offers Dollar Night every Sunday from 12pm until 5pm in April which includes $1 shoe rentals and $1 games per person. A little bit of bowling competition never hurts a date, plus if you and your date are feeling a bit famished following the games, Hooper Bowling Center is also equipped with a snack bar, serving pizza, hamburgers, fries, a variety of sandwiches and much more. Want another competitive date? Visit the Skeet Range right outside of Gate 10. The Skeet Range offers skeet and trap for the price of $5 per round and five stand for $7.50 a round. Do note that only military card holders can rent shotguns for $5, and please ensure you understand the rules of firearm safety. Remember, a safe date is a great date. Hit the greenway at the Cole Park Golf Course, and play a game of 9 or 18 holes. Prices range from $6 to $18, pending on rank and holes played. Need to improve your swing? Hit a few balls on the driving range. Take your sweetie on a scenic, romantic, and quite possibly, free date with the different parks offered within driving range. Pack a basket, a blanket and enjoy some people watching while soaking up the sunshine. Fort Campbell offers plenty of parks to have a nice picnic in the spring afternoon. If you’re really hungry, take on Charley’s Five Star General Challenge, a cheeseburger stacked high with five beef patties and a basket of fries. Just make sure your stomach is much bigger than your eyes because you have 30 minutes to complete the challenge. Edward’s Steak House, located in the heart of Clarksville, is the perfect place for an upscale romantic date. Edwards was voted “The Best Place to Get a Steak” and offers beautiful décor, a piano bar and delicious cuisine. Edward’s also offers a 10% Military discount to patrons with a valid Military I.D. Berry Bear’s locations are located in the Sango shopping center next to Walmart and coming soon, a new store opening on Wilma Rudolph Blvd next to Mulligans. Is international cuisine more your style? Pancho Villa Mexican Grill is one of the most popular Mexican restaurants surrounding the Fort Campbell area. Located just outside of Gate 4 on Fort Campbell Blvd, you and your date can enjoy great Mexican dishes such as enchiladas, burritos, and fajitas at discount prices. I,n addition to their moderately priced entrees Pancho Villa offers a 10% military discount. El Bracero is another great Mexican restaurant located off of Tiny Town Road.
