Army Wellness Center Take Charge of Life By Kelly Morgan

Open just a few months, the Fort Knox Army Wellness Center (AWC) is already looking to make a huge impact on the health and well-being of the Military Family. Apart from just going to the gym and eating healthy, AWC programs and services dig deeper into a client's wellness to see the full picture and provide exact numbers - in order to give clients a “precise exercise prescription.” Staff members at the Army Wellness Center work in conjunction with doctors to help further medical care and treatment. Their goal is to improve the overall well-being of clients by offering programs and services that promote enhanced and sustained healthy lifestyles. Stress affects everyone in some way or another; and the first of six services offered by the AWC shows that there are ways to handle stress so that it does not become a major factor in your life. They use a method called Biofeedback which helps with stress management. The AWC helps to educate clients with stress relief techniques and coping skills. Biofeedback is a relaxation technique that is used to teach clients to control their heart beat in order to reduce stress and build resilience. The emWave Stress Relief System helps clients learn how to transform stress and emotions into free energy. This service is particularly prominent because April is Stress Awareness Month. Too often, we let stress hinder how we handle everyday life. Stress

4

affects far more than what people often realize. It can lead to, or worsen, serious health problems including hypertension, stroke, heart disease, sleep disorders and depression. Without finding ways to cope with the stressors of life, the body will really suffer. Utilizing Biofeedback offered by the AWC can begin to make a difference in both personal and professional effectiveness, as well as improving overall health and well-being. As the director of the AWC, Jared Harper, said, “as long as you are stressed out, no matter what type of physical activity you are doing, your body will be fighting itself. Once you learn how to control stress, everything else will begin to fall into place.” Stress Awareness Month offers the perfect time to take charge of the stress in your life and to seek ways to manage it. Look no further than the AWC to take that first step in feeling like yourself again. The second service offered at the Fort Knox AWC is a body composition assessment. Height, weight and blood pressure are taken, and body fat percentage is tested via BODPOD. The BODPOD uses air displacement to measure fat mass and fat-free mass (muscle). Harper says, “it is important to note that not all body composition devices are created equal and the BODPOD is the most accurate and consistent device, second only to water displacement.” This state-of-the-art machine is used at many notable facilities and events including the NFL combine. With just two 45-second sessions in the BODPOD, body composition can be calculated.

Too often people focus on weight loss, and get stuck on seeing numbers drop on the scale without taking into consideration the increase of muscle, and decrease in fat. By utilizing the BODPOD, people are able to better understand BMI and realize changes in their body without necessarily seeing changes on the scale. This has huge effects on motivation and encourages people to keep working because changes are happening. An assessment of Resting Metabolic Rate is also provided at the AWC. This requires a client to lay down for 15 minutes wearing a mask. The mask measures the client’s oxygen and carbon dioxide levels, which in turn determines each client’s caloric needs. This service helps with the dietary portion of the journey to become a healthier person by helping clients determine if they need to reduce, or add calories to their diet. This method is much more accurate than just estimating the amount of calories needed for each individual. Another aspect of the AWC is the Physical Fitness Assessment. This is a VO2 sub maximal test that determines cardiorespiratory fitness levels which help to determine appropriate training zones for each client. Clients will run or walk on a treadmill for this testing. There is also an option to do this on a bike for those who do a lot of biking, or for those who are training for a triathlon. This assessment also includes back and forearm strength, as well as flexibility. Many people are physically fit, but are not flexible. It is important to know your flexibility levels, and to work to improve them, as lack of flexibility can lead to injury. Individual Counseling and General Wellness Education is provided once an assessment is complete. Clients are able to meet with a health educator and discuss the results as well as set wellness goals. All encounters are documented so the client’s primary caregivers can have access to them. Results may also be given to personal trainers - to give them a solid foundation to look at, and equip them to better formulate a workout plan that most fits your needs.

knoxmwr.com

The final service offered is a variety of wellness educational classes which help to reinforce assessment results, as well as, what clients are doing in all aspects of their wellness journey. Classes range from ways to increase metabolism, to stress education, to healthy sleep habits.

The Army Wellness Center is located at 545 Eisenhower Ave., Bldg. 1489, across from the mini mall and Burger King. The hours of operation are as followed: Monday through Thursday from 7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. and Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. If you are interested in scheduling an appointment with the Army Wellness Center, please call (502) 626-0408. Army Wellness Centers are a U.S. Army Medical Command initiative that supports the Army Ready initiatives. AWC services are available to all Active Duty Service members and their Families, Retirees, and Department of Defense Civilian employees. The best part about what is offered at the AWC is that all services are completely free of charge. Utilizing these services at other facilities could cost thousands of dollars. AWCs are also standardized throughout the Army, so if you change stations, your information is already in the system, and at your next home, they can continue your wellness program right where you left off. During Stress Awareness Month - why not visit the AWC and see how they can help? While the Biofeedback program is specifically designated for stress management, each of these services can make a huge impact on overall health and well-being. Army Wellness Centers have improved and modernized the health initiative. It is no longer a guessing game as to how to improve overall health, because at the AWC they can give you exact numbers and provide educational materials to help along the way. When using services provided by the AWC, as you make changes to your life, you can decrease stress levels and pave the way for a happier, healthier you! 4

ACS Celebrates Awareness in April By Viviane Arnold

Most of us know that ACS programs assist Soldiers, Civilian employees and Families in managing the challenges of daily living experienced in the unique context of Military service, and in maintaining readiness by coordinating and delivering comprehensive, responsive services that promote self-reliance, resiliency and stability. During the month of April, national campaigns and national awareness are highlighting a few of them.

Child Abuse Prevention Month The future success of, not just our Fort Knox, but all of our Posts, Camps and Stations, depends on the healthy growth and development of all children. When we work together to ensure their healthy development, the next generation pays it back through a lifetime of productive and responsible citizenship. With the support of engaged Communities and nurturing Families, all children can thrive and have the opportunity to grow into contributing and caring adults. The theme for 2015 Child Abuse Awareness Month is “Children deserve to be protected. Know the warning signs. Help stop abuse… before it happens.” When children are abused or neglected, they are in a constant state of stress. In the absence of supportive relationships to help buffer the stress, they can have a toxic stress reaction. When this happens, harmful chemicals flood the child's brain and body causing damage to the developing brain, disrupting normal child development. Families who can meet their own basic needs for food, clothing, housing, and transportation – and who know how to access essential services such as childcare, health care, mental health and Community services to address Family-specific needs – are better able to ensure the safety and well-being of their children. For assistance or information, call (502) 624-2561.

Autism Awareness Month Autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that generally appears before the age of 3 and impacts the normal development of the brain in the areas of social interaction, communication skills and cognitive function. Individuals with autism typically have difficulties in verbal and non-verbal communication, social interactions, and leisure or play activities. Autism is diagnosed four times more often in boys than girls. Its prevalence is not affected by race, region, or socio-economic status. Since autism was first diagnosed in the U.S., the incidence has climbed to an alarming one in 68 children in the U.S. Currently there is no cure for autism, though with early intervention and treatment, the diverse symptoms related to autism can be greatly improved, and in some cases, completely overcome. For more information, call your ACS Exceptional Family Member Program coordinator at (502) 624-4067/5419. Gold Star Wives’ Day April 5th has been designated Gold Star Wives’ Day to allow America to pay respect to the spouses and Families of fallen members of the U.S. Armed Forces. The spouses and Families of fallen Service members have sacrificed so much, and to recognize these sacrifices, the Senate passed a resolution to designate Gold Star Wives’ Day. The Senate resolution states Military Service members and Veterans “bear the burden of protecting the freedom of the people of the United States, and the sacrifices of the Families of the fallen Members and Veterans of the Armed Forces of the United States should never be forgotten.” Gold Star Wives’ Day serves as a way to honor the sacrifices that these Spouses have made. It also creates Community awareness. For information about Gold Star events, call ACS Survivor Outreach Service (SOS) at (502) 624-2006. National Volunteer Appreciation Week National Volunteer Week began in 1974 as a way to recognize and celebrate the efforts of volunteers. Since then, the original emphasis on the celebration has widened; the week has become a nationwide effort to urge people to get out and volunteer in their Communities. National Volunteer Week, April 12-18, is about inspiring, recognizing and encouraging people to seek out imaginative ways to engage in their Communities. It’s about demonstrating to Military Communities that by working together, we have the fortitude to meet our challenges and accomplish our goals. Fort Knox Army Volunteer Corps will be celebrating and recognizing its outstanding volunteers with the following activities/events: Volunteer Display and Recruitment Fair on April 14 from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. in the Post Exchange (Lobby); Volunteer Popcorn Social on April 16 from 1:30 p.m.-3:30 p.m. at the Soldier and Family Assistance Center – Bldg. 500, Spearhead Division Ave; and the Outstanding Volunteer of the Year Recognition Event, May 17 at 2:00 p.m. at the Saber & Quill (Verandah). Events are open to all volunteers, their Families and volunteer program managers. For more information, call (502) 624-6779.

Get Out & Play!! By Jennifer Dent

Nowadays, children are becoming more and more dependent upon modern technology for their entertainment needs. It’s not uncommon for a child to spend countless hours engulfed in video games, watching television, browsing the internet or texting their friends, all while lounging inside their homes with little, to no physical activity. This common trend is known as “couch potato syndrome” and can lead to many health complications in the future. These habits can be avoided by simply getting your kids outside to play. Research has shown that children who play outdoors reduce their risk of many health issues like obesity, heart disease and high blood pressure. It has also been proven that outdoor play improves motor skills, creative and cognitive thinking, and social/emotional development. But the best part is that it gives your kids a chance to burn off energy and stimulate their imagination. There are many things you can do to get your kids to play outside. Setting up a play date with a friend, getting them involved with a sport or club, or simply playing nature detective can motivate them off the sofa. Or if it’s a rainy day, a trip to the Houston Bowling Center or Anderson Indoor Aquatics Center can always be an excellent alternative. If you are a resident of Knox Hills, take advantage of the Community Garden. Fresh vegetables are always more appealing to a child if they help grow them. Fort Knox Family and MWR also offers a variety of activities, as well as recreational facilities that are open to the public. Below is a list of upcoming events that offer fun for all ages. •

April 18 – Bass Fishing Tournament: Fishing tournament open to all ages with a kids category, adult category and senior category. Cash prizes and giveaways will be available. Located on Lower Douglas Lake.

Thunder Over Louisville “Boom with a View” By Iva Pearlstein

“The most fantastic fireworks show I've ever seen!” exclaimed Army Civilian employee, Delaine Simpson. Since the fireworks started in 1991, “Thunder Over Louisville” – the official kickoff to the Kentucky Derby Festival – has become the largest annual pyrotechnics display in North America. Further excitement is provided by an incredible air show that takes place in the afternoon before the fireworks. Attendance varies; however, expect crowds because with nice weather attendees can number around 700,000. Although television coverage is excellent, only live, is one able to experience the thrill of vibrations from the aircraft along with the fireworks. This is an event to feel, see and hear! Although she knew of the Kentucky Derby before moving to the Fort Knox area with her Active Duty husband, Simpson was unfamiliar with “Thunder Over Louisville.” “Viewing the air show and fireworks live has been one of the highlights of our time in Kentucky,” shares Simpson. Highlighting the afternoon is the air show. Last April, audiences were enthralled by the Blue Angels, an exhibition flying team dating back to 1946 created by Admiral Chester Nimitz, “to glue the relationship between the Military and the public of the United States of America.”

Crew member Petty Officer, Michael Flemster describes his feelings, “Blue Angels to me means going through anything and knowing you can overcome it through your mind!” Appearances by the USAF Thunderbirds along with the U.S. Army Parachute Team – The Golden Knights – will be featured at the 2015 Thunder air show. Beyond common sense, there are rules for all those attending. No tents or canopies of any kind are permitted within Waterfront Park, and neither is overnight camping. No glass bottles are allowed at the event site, alcoholic beverages may not be brought in, and grills are not permitted in the Thunder venue. Pets should be left at home, and remember that all persons and parcels, are subject to search. Tips and hints can also help attendees have a better experience – especially if going for the first time. Leaving after the fireworks, it can take hours to make it back home. Park as far away from the event site as you can manage. Also, make sure your car has sufficient gas for the exiting traffic delays. If taking young children, bring ear plugs for them, as the loud noises can be frightening. Cell phone reception and signal service can be unreliable due to the crowds – so identify a meeting location and time to regroup in case your party gets separated. “Boom with a View” is the theme of this year’s Thunder. It is a reference to everything that spectators will experience on Thunder Day. “The soundtrack will also delight the senses,” informs Wayne Hettinger, Thunder Show Producer. “We try to fill the soundtrack with songs that will get everyone excited, and this year's show will be no different.” Further information and sources: Kentucky Derby Festival Press Office 1001 S.
