Dealing with Deployment by Alex Zapetis
We are now a few months into my husband’s first deployment. When it first started, I wondered daily how I was going to make it through these 9 months. My heart hurt and all I could ever think about was my husband. Now I am happy to report things are getting easier for my family. My two sons and I have adjusted to him being away for a little bit. Even though it is still extremely tough some days, I now feel like we are going to be able to kick this deployment’s butt. Whenever my husband gets to call home, my two boys get so excited. A light inside of them will turn on when they hear their father’s voice. They will run to the phone so that they can Facetime with him and tell him hello. They love to show him their toys and give a kiss through the phone. Even though the call is always choppy and lag, those few minutes truly make my day. Even if it is from a phone screen, my husband is still getting to see our children grow up, and that means the world to me. I have learned that deployments are like a rollercoaster. Some days you feel like you are crushing it, and others are extremely difficult. With that being said, I am preparing myself for a lot of up and downs this month. This is because April is always a big month for my family. It contains my oldest son’s birthday, my birthday, and our marriage anniversary. I know deep down; all these special days will not be the same without my husband here. I am trying everything I can to help my soldier feel included in all the celebrations. Our son’s birthday party theme will be dinosaurs, so I am sending my husband a toy dinosaur in a care package. Hopefully, he will be able to Facetime with our son and be able to show him that even Daddy has a dinosaur too! I want them to feel connected on this special day, even though they are thousands of miles apart. In terms of my birthday and our anniversary, the best present that he could give me is a phone call. Just hearing his voice is enough for me. It lets me know that he is safe, and we are another day closer to his homecoming. Speaking of that, is it crazy that even this far out, I am already trying to think of the perfect outfit to wear? Let’s not even talk about all the pictures of hair styles and nail art ideas I have screenshotted on my phone! As I said previously, it really helps me to plan out the future. To me, it doesn’t make it seem so far away. I know there are a lot of spouses out there that are also in my shoes. Deployments are hard, even on the days that are going well. I just want to say that It really helps to talk to someone about the difficult days, as well as have someone to celebrate the good ones with. I am blessed to be surrounded by family for the majority of this deployment, but if that is not the case for you, please feel free to reach out to me. There are so many other women out there feeling the exact same way as you are, and we can all help each other through it. We got this! One month at a time.

Campbell Babies The Fort Campbell Spouses’ Club will be highlighting Campbell Babies as April’s charity of the month during the monthly luncheon on April 17 at Cole Park Commons. Sharon Loebl is the founder of Campbell Babies. She originally started a group called Happy Hookers and Knitters Two back in 2007. Sharon had been singly contributing baby blankets to the BACH nursery when she came to the attention of Laura Boyd, the hospital Public Affairs Officer. Boyd arranged with a local credit union to do a yarn collection for the organization. Sharon’s picture appeared in the newspaper and she immediately started receiving interested e-mails from the local community. Everyone met, formed a group, and after a year or so changed their name to BACH Babies. The organization struggled along for some years providing their own yarn, until they came to the attention of Karen Jorgenson, the Red Cross Station Manager at the time. She arranged for a yearly yarn grant for the group. They increased to around 20 volunteers. In those years, BACH babies donated between 400 and 650 blankets a year. Sadly, Sharon said the grant dried up, and the elderly contributors could not afford to buy their own yarn. Loebl stated that the group did have some post support after she started a crochet group at the library, and she passed the leadership role of BACH Babies to a military spouse, who passed it on to another spouse. Sharon and her husband moved to San Antonio for a year before returning and discovered the group on post was all but dead. The organization only had a handful of the Clarksville ladies that were still contributing. She took the group back and renamed it Campbell Babies. Since 2014, they have been solely relying on scrap yarn contributions and the sale of Sharon’s crocheted plastic bags. 100% of bag sales goes for the purchase of yarn. (fb.me/campbellbagsforbabes) Currently the group is down to four members and is donating approximately 30 blankets a month. Sharon says that they would love to have more volunteers to join them and are always accepting yarn donations. The group’s favorite brands of yarn include; I Love This Yarn, Red Heart, and Pounds of Love. They also accept gift cards to Walmart as well to the craft stores that carry yarn. To donate or volunteer, please contact Sharon at sloebl_3@hotmail.com 16

Summer is a time that children of all ages look forward to. Waking up early every morning for school is a thing of the past, at least for a few months! Even though summer is an amazing time for families to make memories and bond, it can also be a time that boredom starts to rear its head. For older children, it can be more difficult to find entertaining things to do. Sitting at home surfing the web or playing video games can get old very quickly! Good news is Fort Campbell has tons of activities going on to keep your children happy and having a blast.

You may have heard of Earth Day before, but have you ever stopped and wondered what it truly is? Earth Day, which is on April 22, marks the anniversary of the creation of the modern environmental movement that began in 1970. It all started with an idea for a national day to focus on the environment. It was started by Earth Day founder Gaylord Nelson, then a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, after witnessing the effects of the 1969 massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California. On April 22, 1970, 20 million Americans began holding massive coast-to-coast rallies. Thousands of colleges and universities organized protests against the deterioration of the environment. They rallied against oil spills, polluting factories and power plants, raw sewage, toxic dumps, pesticides, freeways, the loss of wilderness, and the extinction of wildlife, and many more things. Today, Earth Day is observed all over the world and is celebrated by more than a billion people every year. The day of action calls for a difference in human behavior and provokes policy changes. Celebrators of the holiday are currently fighting for a clean environment with increasing urgency as the effects of climate change become more apparent every day.
If you would like to take part in Earth Day, there are many ways to help the cause. Going green starts with making small changes that can add up to making a big difference. Commit to earth-friendly acts, such as planting some trees and picking up trash. Conserve energy and resources by carpooling to work and cutting off unused lights in the house. You can also join in on environmental projects in your community. For people over 18, get out and vote for leaders that are committed to protecting the environment. Remember, the choices we make today have a big influence on the Earth that we must live on tomorrow. Go Green! For more information on Earth Day and ways you can help, go to https://www.earthday.org

The USO will also be holding a family workshop on Saturday, April 13, called EmPaCt. It is intended to have families work together to strengthen their connection as a family. They will be taking into consideration how being a military family offers unique challenges to connection. Registration is required. All USO events are for our Active Duty/Guard/Reserve Service members and their families and are offered FREE of charge. The USO says the events are their way of saying thank you to them for their service.

The soldiers that lost their lives were CW2 Francisco Javier Ruiz, 1SG John Andrew Harrison, SGT Larry Christopher Hinson, SPC D. Nathan Shirley, PFC Robert Hicks JR, and PV2 Angel Armando Bernal-Frias. As the monument states “Let us not attempt to understand why or change things we cannot. But rather let us remember and honor their selfless service to our comrades, our army, and our nation. Let us not mourn for the soldiers who died, but rather, let us be glad that such heroes lived. These men will never be forgotten for giving them supreme sacrifice. May they all rest in peace.
