Happy May everyone! In this issue, we celebrate Military Spouses and everything that they do to support their Families and their Soldiers. In 1984, President Ronald Reagan declared the Friday before Mother’s Day each year to be Military Spouse Appreciation Day in honor of the “countless personal sacrifices” that Military Spouses make to support the Armed Forces. Instead of just celebrating Spouses for one day, Fort Campbell is celebrating for a week! Check out the events on page 4. You will also find information about Military Spouse Tours on page 14 as well as other great articles throughout the magazine. As a Military Spouse myself, I understand that it is not always easy. Dealing with deployments and separations are difficult. To be supportive and strong, to live independently and self sufficiently, and then be able to transition back to being part of a couple is also hard. The great part is that it is also very rewarding. I am so proud to be a Military Spouse and proud of my husband and what he does for our country every day. I am also proud of other Military Spouses. I see them starting businesses, volunteering, and lending a helping hand to others. The list of accomplishments and accolades goes on. I hope that you take the opportunity to thank a Military Spouse, not just this month, but throughout the year. We must also take time to remember those who are no longer with us. Memorial Day, or Decoration Day as my Grandmother called it, is celebrated on May 31. She always instilled in us the respect of our ancestors, relatives, and those who had served. We took time every year to lay flowers and put flags on their places of rest. Although some of us think of Memorial Day as a day for picnics and barbeques, we must never forget what Memorial Day represents. The brave die never, though they sleep in dust: Their courage nerves a thousand living men. ~Minot J. Savage

Melissa Wells, Editor mwrlifeeditor@fortcampbellmwr.com Gardening tip: May is the time when you can really start planting everything. The soil should be warm enough and the danger of frost passed. Now is the time to plant tomatoes, corn, and anything else that you might enjoy in your vegetable garden. You can also try companion planting. There are numerous books and websites that will tell you which plants are beneficial to each other and which ones should not be planted together. For example, plant some radish seeds with your cucumbers. Radishes are helpful in repelling insects. Some flowers are also great companions to vegetables. Mix these in for a beautiful and multi-purpose garden!

he Friday before Mother’s Day each year has been designated at Military Spouse Appreciation Day. It is a wonderful opportunity to honor Spouses and the work that they do for Soldiers and Families throughout the year. This year, Fort Campbell is honoring Spouses with a week’s worth of fun and fantastic activities and events as USAA Military Spouse Appreciation Week starts on May 3. This celebration allows Spouses to come together in the spirit of fun, positivity, and thanks for a job well done. The week starts off with a “Hooah!” as Spouses participate as a Soldier for a Day on Monday, May 3. Rise and shine, recruits, because the activity starts at 0700 with Physical Training (PT) for the entire group. After that, you will head out to the Outdoor Recreation Challenge Course for some adrenaline pumping adventures with climbing walls, land navigation, and a ropes course on a fifty foot vertical “jungle gym.” Participants in this activity will also enjoy lunch together. On Tuesday, May 4, Blanchfield Army Community Hospital is holding a Women’s Health Fair from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Starting at 8 a.m., classes will be offered including: Coping with Marriage in a Distant Relationship, Car Seat Safety, Sun Protection, Breast Health, and more. There will also be a tour of the Fisher House as well as the newly renovated dining facility at Blanchfield. A complimentary lunch will be provided for this event. For the Military Spouse Appreciation Luncheon on May 5, 11 a.m. until 1 p.m., at Cole Park Commons, guests will have the honor of listening to Sylvia Kidd, Director of Family Programs for AUSA, as she

www.fortcampbellmwr.com

delivers the Keynote address. Mrs. Kidd is a Military Spouse and has served in many different positions throughout her storied career. She has also achieved numerous awards and citations. Tickets for the luncheon are $10 and can be purchased at the Family Resource Center, ACS Building 5661, and Cole Park Commons Southern Buffet. Lunch includes Chicken Chardonnay, wild rice, whole green beans with red peppers, and a dessert. The Military Spouse Appreciation Video will also be debuted at this event. Now it’s time for some serious rest and relaxation, because Thursday, May 6 is Spa Night! The event, at Cole Park Commons, starts at 6 p.m. and continues until 10 p.m. Guests will be treated to mini facials, pedicures, spray tanning, and more. If that doesn’t get your attention, then maybe this will…diamonds! That’s right; USAA is sponsoring a Diamond Dig with a certified gemologist where you will have the chance to win a real diamond or a beautiful cubic zirconium. Finally, the week culminates in the Military Spouse Conference at the Family Resource Center on Friday, May 7,

from 8:15 a.m. until 3 p.m. This full day event gives Military Spouses the opportunity to attend a variety of classes ranging from self defense, to crafts, to a financial readiness class taught by USAA’s J.J. Montanero as well as enjoy a fantastic lunch. Opening remarks will be provided by Holly Petraeus, a former Fort Campbell Spouse and wife of General David Petraeus. Tickets for this event are $15 to include classes and lunch. USAA Military Spouse Appreciation Week provides an opportunity for Spouses to get together, gain valuable information, and enjoy each other’s company in a positive and exciting environment. Military Spouses work hard every day and it is a pleasure to honor them with such a wonderful variety of events and services. These events are for active duty Spouses only, with the exception of the Military Spouse Luncheon on May 5, which is open to everyone who purchases a ticket. For all Spouses who have signed up to participate, we look forward to a great experience. More information about this event is available at www.fortcampbellmwr.com/SpouseAppreciation/.

For questions about this event, please call (270) 798-2158. Events like these would not be possible without the support of our sponsors, USAA, Mugshots by Dana, Luigi’s Pizza, Daymar Institute, Scentsy, Mary Kay Cosmetics, Beauticontrol, Arbonne, Avon, Clarksville Colonics & Lifestyle Center, La Bello Esthetics/Bronze Tan, Clarksville Dental Spa, Hopkinsville MAC, AUSA, Ideal Distributing and more. he smell of sizzling steaks and grilled veggies is in the air. Grilling season is upon us! Whether you have a state-of-the-art, gas burning double-wide or a sturdy charcoal grill, everyone needs to remember that safety comes first.

Before you head out to the backyard, you should refresh your memory with these safety tips. According to Fort Campbell CAM Regulation 420-24, 14.4, barbecue grills shall not be used indoors, on porches, in garages, or carports. Even if you do not live on post, these are good guidelines to follow: • Barbecue grills should be kept under close supervision of an adult at all times when in use. • Barbecue grills shall be located at least 10 feet away from combustible materials and/or all buildings when in use. • When use has been completed, hot coals shall be quenched with water or covered with a noncombustible cover to prevent sparks or hot coals from being scattered by the wind. Fort Campbell provides these guidelines so that everyone can have a safe and enjoyable grilling experience. If you have any questions, please call the Fort Campbell Fire Department at (270) 798-7171. Before you even begin to grill, there are precautions you should take. Always check your grill thoroughly for leaks, cracking, or brittleness.

www.fortcampbellmwr.com

For gas grills, clean out all hoses and tubes leading from the propane tank to the burner. Store and use your grill on a large flat surface that cannot be burned such as concrete or asphalt. Make sure your grill is at least 10 feet from your house, garage, or any plants. Have a fire extinguisher handy at all times. In most instances, a hose will work just fine. As always, children’s safety comes first. Be sure to keep them away from fires and grills. Some Families establish a safety zone around barbecues. A chalk line would work great for this purpose. Kids can have some fun and learn to respect the rules of barbecue safety all at the same time. While you are grilling, be sure to use long handled utensils and flame resistant mitts. Never use any flammable liquid, other than barbecue starter for the proper grill, to start or refresh a fire. Keep alcoholic beverages away from the grill; they are flammable! And always remember, never leave a grill unattended.

Of course, if you are without a grill this summer, don’t feel left out. You can rent one from MWR’s Gear-to-Go! Gear-to-Go rents by the day, weekend, or week. Patrons can choose from smokers, mesquite grills, super cookers, pig roasters, grill or propane barbecues, and fish cookers. Whatever type of grilling is on the menu this summer, Gear-to-Go can help. If you would like to reserve your grill or have questions, please call Gear-to-Go at (270) 798-3919.

aying that deployments are difficult on everyone is an understatement for sure. It does not matter if this is your first deployment, twelfth, or somewhere in between; anxiety levels usually run high. The important thing to understand is that dealing with deployments is a different process for everyone. Keeping yourself active and involved is essential in adjusting to this process. Mental Health America continues its tradition to celebrate May as Mental Health Month, which began in 1949. With increasing economic troubles piled on to the stress of work and Family demands, more and more Americans are suffering. This year, the theme “Live Your Life Well” challenges Americans to promote whole health and wellness in homes, communities, and schools. During these difficult times, Mental Health America wants Americans to know that there are tools that can buffer the effects of stress and help them cope better with the many challenges they face. From relaxation techniques, to journaling exercises, to simple ways to get better sleep and improve eating habits, the materials offer a wide range of tools to build resiliency and well-being. Because May is National Mental Health Month, Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) would like to give you some resources for coping with deployment. (Retrieved March 19, 2010 from Mental Health America website http://www.nmha.org/go/may)

If you are looking to get involved in the Fort Campbell community while your Spouse is deployed, Army Community Service (ACS) has many resources for you. The Pre and Post Deployment Spouse Battlemind classes are outstanding for anyone who is interested in learning about the issues Soldiers and Spouses face during and after deployment. The goals for the class are to identify common areas of concern or conflict

www.fortcampbellmwr.com

that Military Spouses and Soldiers experience; look at issues dealing with deployment from both the Soldier and the Spouse’s point of view; provide strategies to enhance Family resilience before and during deployment; and identify cues for when to seek help and available resources. The class is meant to be very interactive and is conducted in a small setting of no more than 15. Lots of discussion and small group work is done. Another channel for dealing with deployment is through Family Readiness Groups (FRGs). FRGs are run by the Soldier’s unit. They offer an immeasurable wealth of information about the Soldier’s unit, activities on post, and much more. Volunteering for your FRG and talking with people who are in similar situations can often help relieve tension and can give you a positive outlet to help yourself as well as others. Deployments can be extremely overwhelming. Sometimes you just need to talk without the worry of judgment. In those cases, Military Family Life Consultants (MFLC), chaplains, and Military One Source are all available to you. The MFLC program is designed to provide anonymous, confidential support to Soldiers and their Family Members, especially during deployments. The program serves Active Duty, mobilized National Guard and Army Reserve Soldiers, and their respective Families. The program is free. Chaplains can also be contacted at the installation chapel and are a private

source for people to talk to. For information on these and the above programs, please call ACS at (270) 956-2935. Military One Source offers services where no question is too small or too big. Whether you are preparing for a new baby, dealing with relationship issues, getting out of debt, or buying your first car, Military One Source can help. You can find referrals to military and local community resources, educational booklets and audio recordings at no cost to you, and much more. Military One Source is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and 365 days a year. Call (800) 342-9647 to speak directly to a qualified staffer. You can always visit www.militaryonesource.com to learn about their services. If all of that is not enough to get you out of the house and dealing with a deployment in a positive way, MWR has many facilities and activities to keep you busy. Gyms, pools, and intramural sports teams are available to get your blood pumping. The R.F. Sink Library has books, DVDs, and CDs for you as well. Arts & Crafts can get your creative juices flowing with craft classes. Hooper Bowling Center and Cole Park Golf Club both offer activities for everyone. During deployments, MWR offers a Spouse Discount Card. The card gets you discounts at various MWR locations on Fort Campbell. For more information about the MWR Spouse Discount Card, please call (270) 798-7535. Coping with deployment is never easy. People experience a wide range of emotions. Hopefully the resources found in this article will help you through a rough time. Just remember, you are not in this alone.

May is here and it’s that special time to honor mothers and caregivers that take care and give comfort to us every day. It is important to take the opportunity to give mom a little extra attention, TLC, and time to put her feet up and enjoy some rest and relaxation. As a mom-to-be myself, I can’t think of anything better than sitting down to a sweet treat and relaxing. This month I decided to ask Chef Bob to give us some yummy dessert ideas to make mom’s mouth water. Kids – this is a great chance to make yourself look like a super chef! Enlist the help of an adult to whip up these delicious desserts and mom will be super impressed with your culinary skills. Don’t forget, part of giving mom a break and a great treat includes cleaning up the dishes afterward! Enjoy Mother’s Day!

Warm Walnut Brownie Pudding Brownie: 1 cup all purpose flour 3/4 cup sugar 1/4 cup lightly packed unsweetened cocoa powder 2 tsp baking powder 1/2 tsp salt 1/2 cup buttermilk 1/4 cup unsalted butter (melted) 3/4 tsp vanilla extract 1 cup chopped walnuts (toasted) Whipped topping Syrup: 3/4 cup packed dark brown sugar 1/4 cup lightly packed unsweetened cocoa powder 5 tsp instant espresso powder 1 2/3 cup warm water 1 1/2 Tbsp vanilla extract Pinch of salt Preheat the oven to 325 degrees. For syrup, combine the first four ingredients in a small saucepan and gradually whisk in 1 2/3 cup warm water and vanilla extract. Bring syrup to a simmer over low heat, whisking often (can be made up to 2 days in advance and re-warmed). For the brownie, grease an 8x8 inch baking pan. Whisk the first five ingredients together in a large bowl, blend well. Mix in buttermilk, butter, and vanilla then add walnuts (batter will be thick). Spread the mixture into the prepared pan and pour the syrup mixture over the brownie. Bake until the sauce bubbles around the sides and the brownie layer has risen almost to the top of the pan and feels firm to the touch; about 40 minutes. Transfer to a tack and cool for 10 minutes. Cut and serve with whipped topping.

By Keri McPeak Fort Campbell’s Public Affairs Office (PAO) has developed a program that allows Spouses to experience a glimpse of the various training or “a day in the life of their 101st Soldier” through the Military Spouse Tour Program. This great program starts off with Spouses receiving a briefing covering the “city” of Fort Campbell. The brief covers information on Fort Campbell’s organizations, demographics, Soldier and Family support programs, and current and future major construction projects and operations. From there, the Spouses get to experience the UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter simulator. Two groups of four people get to experience the adrenaline rush of the flight simulation at a time. After everyone in the group demonstrates their piloting abilities in the flight simulator, they head to a nearby DFAC or dining facility to experience military style dining. After lunch, the group visits The Sabalauski Air Assault School (TSAAS) for a brief overview of the school’s requirements, demonstrations of the obstacle course, and different rappelling

techniques. Spouses will then have the opportunity to rappel from the school’s thirty-four foot Air Assault Tower. The last stop on the tour is at the Engagement Skills Trainer (EST). The EST is an indoor state-of-the-art weapons firing range that uses current U. S. Army weapons and laser technology. Tour members will have the opportunity to fire authentic active duty weapons at simulated targets where a computer keeps track of hits and misses. The offering of such tours is just one of the many wonderful ways Fort Campbell recognizes, supports, and carries out the Army Family Covenant. Military Spouse Tours require proper planning and coordination through a tour group point of contact; usually the unit’s Family Readiness Support Assistant (FRSA). Therefore, it is imperative that certain guidelines and restrictions be met through a designated tour point of contact. These include, a minimum of twenty

participants all at least 18 years of age, and a tour application completed and submitted to the Fort Campbell Public Affairs Office. Tour information packets and applications can be coordinated through Staff Sergeant Gerald Baylor and or Mr. John Minton. Currently the tours are given once a month and dates are set until October 2010. After October the program will be re-evaluated to determine if additional tours should be added or if the program will be continued. This is a valued program that fulfills the needs of Fort Campbell Spouses, and interested parties should contact Staff Sergeant Gerald Baylor via telephone at (270) 798-4365 or through e-mail at gerald.baylor@us.army.mil to book tours. Tour dates, availability, and processes are subject to change without notice.

M

other’s have been celebrated in one form or another since early Egyptian times. In America, the tradition of Mother’s Day was not officially nationally recognized until 1914.1 Mother’s Day is a day filled with gifts, flowers, dinning out at special restaurants, and making the day as extraordinary as possible. This year, challenge yourself to think outside the typical gifts that are given to Moms everywhere. Take the time to truly reflect on what your Mother means to you, and what would be the best way to express how you feel about your Mother and motherhood. The definition of a mother can vary from person to person, and does not necessarily have to be the person that gave birth to you. There are many ways to express love, gratitude, and appreciation. One way to create a life lasting memory is to give a handmade gift. With so many crafts and easy to do kits available for all different ages, there are endless possibilities. A great place to create those one of a kind handmade gifts is the Guenette Arts and Crafts Center, located at 89 Screaming Eagle Blvd. At Guenette, you can do everything from wood working to stained glass classes. Kids can also learn the importance of making a handmade gift through classes at SKIESUnlimited with classes ranging from cooking to jewelry making. For those who do not have a creative bone in their body, writing a heartfelt letter may be the unique gift they give this year. This Mother’s Day, take the time to write a meaningful letter to the special women in your life. Write personal letters to your grandmother, mother, mother in-law, daughter, and any other woman who has influenced your life. Letters that come from the heart are sure to make this Mother’s Day one of a kind and truly memorable. By Keri McPeak local arts and crafts stores, or do an Internet search for “handmade gifts for moms.” Mom’s heart strings are sure to be pulled this Mother’s Day when she is showered in genuine gifts of love and appreciation. Some handmade gift ideas:

Key Chain What you'll need: • Alphabet beads to spell a personal message • Colorful beads to fill in gaps (approximately 30-40) • Colorful charm • Keychain ring • 24" stretchy jewelry cord, cut into two equal pieces How to make it: 1. Line up the two pieces of jewelry cord side by side, then gather one end together and tie in a triple knot to the keychain ring. 2. Thread colorful beads and letters onto one side of the jewelry cord. 3. Carefully set the finished cord aside. Taping the end of the cord to the table will keep the beads from falling off. 4. On the other string, add more colorful beads and additional lettering. 5. Lay the two strings alongside each other and add beads to the shortest side to get them even. 6. Holding the two ends of the jewelry cord as close to the last beads as possible, thread one last colorful bead onto BOTH strings. Run the string through the bead again by looping it through the top and pulling it tight. 7. Tie the charm to the end of the string, knot it several times and trim ends. Don't trim it too close! Tips: • For younger children you can use pony beads and larger alphabet beads as well as hemp or thicker jewelry cord. • Be creative, make up your own phrase or use your Mom's first name.

Flower Pots Materials: • Newspaper • Acrylic paint • Flower pots • Paper Plate • Paintbrushes Directions: 1. Lay newspapers over your work area in case of spills. 2. Lay out colors of paint you want to use on a paper plate. 3. Paint flower pot a solid color. 4. Write a special message to Mom or paint designs and pictures on the flower pot with your fingers or a paintbrush. 5. Go a step further and plant a flower in your hand-painted flower pot for your Mother. not actual project photos

By Tess Peterson Being a Military Spouse is not always easy, but there are many that have not only embraced military life as a Spouse, but have turned it into a life-changing experience. Whether it is a President’s wife, an author, or the star of a television show, Military Spouses are prevalent in our country’s archives. Many, but not all, United States Presidents have served in the military. Throughout history, some of the most famous Presidential Spouses that embraced military life include Martha Washington, Mary Lincoln, Julia Boggs Dent Grant, and Nancy Reagan. There have of course been others, but these names seem to stand out. Martha Washington followed President Washington into the battlefield when he served as Commander in Chief of the Continental Army. She spent the infamous winter at Valley Forge with the General, and was instrumental in maintaining some level of morale among troops. We must never forget the true sacrifice of these women. Military Spouses need not always

By Andrea Latimore Summer is right around the corner, and that means fireworks, bar-b-ques, and trips to the beach. It also means taking an excursion through the back of your closet to pull out that old swimsuit from seasons past. If you are like many of us, you have spent the past several months eating comfort foods and exercising less; or maybe that‘s just me! As we countdown to swimsuit season, here are a few tips to help whip your body into shape just in time for a stroll on the beach. First, visit your local physician and get a check-up. Once you get clearance, you can start your work-out. Next, put on your swimsuit and evaluate the areas that need the most work. Lastly, create a work-out program that involves cardiovascular training, strength training, stretching, and healthy eating.

www.fortcampbellmwr.com

Stretching - You should stretch before and after your workout. Skipping this step may lead to muscle imbalances. Healthy eating – Try to eat at least five to six smaller meals a day. That means eating breakfast, lunch, dinner, plus two snacks in between. Make sure your meals are high in protein. Protein takes more calories to burn; therefore it increases your metabolism. Cardiovascular training - The key to burning off body fat. You can try walking, cycling, swimming or light jogging; do 20-40 minutes daily of these exercises. If you want to switch it up, try a Zumba class. Strength training - Work your muscles and start on your way to a six pack. You will need to alternate doing lower body and abdominal exercises with upper body exercises on alternate days. For each of these exercises, you should do three sets with 12-15 repetitions each.

Now you are off to a good start. Estep Wellness Center is a great place to find a wide variety of exercise classes as well as state of the art fitness equipment. It is a great resource to help you fit into that cute little bikini! For a complete list of exercise classes go to www.fortcampbellmwr.com/Recreation/Estep or call Estep Wellness Center at (270) 798-4023/4664.

By Melissa Wells There is nothing like a refreshing dip in a cool swimming pool to quench your summer thirst for refreshment and as always, MWR strives to provide the best possible experience for all Fort Campbell patrons. This is amply demonstrated by the newly updated facilities that provide a great experience throughout the aquatics program. Patrons will notice some changes this year in regards to deployment discounts at the pools. This year, the deployment discount will not be offered at the pools due to funding constraints. While funding free pool access for Families of deployed Soldiers has occurred at Fort Campbell for a number of years, it is not an expense funded by the Army Family Covenant (AFC). By Melissa Schaffner The 3rd Annual Clarksville Warrior Week will take place May 1-8, 2010. This week-long celebration of our military men, women and their Families is Clarksville's small way of showing our appreciation and thanks for their service and sacrifice. The schedule is as follows:

spending the allocated dollars for the AFC on the programs that are intended to be provided, such as free child care for these Families. Those programs must take priority over recreation. While we understand that this may be disappointing news, we have faith in our customers and know that they understand the importance of Family programs such as childcare. One of the promises of the Army Family Covenant was to standardize programs and services across the Army. Part of standardizing services across installations includes funding similar programs and unfortunately, not funding others. The experience for our Soldiers and Families should be a consistent one at each installation. Access to the pool is still available at the low price of $2 per person and children under the age of six are FREE with each paying adult. Still a great deal for summer fun! For information on the pools at Fort Campbell, call (270) 798-6310.
