TAKE THE CHALLENGE at Outdoor Recreation Challenge Course by William Vallee

www.fortcampbellmwr.com

Summer is here and it’s time to head outdoors! It’s also a great time to challenge the mind and body and have some fun at the Outdoor Recreation Challenge Course. A challenge course is a series of activities to include climbing, traversing pulleys and cables and a ropes course that challenges the body and helps foster personal development and team building. The Challenge course consists of high and/or low level elements. Low elements take place on the ground or only a few feet above the ground while high elements are built on utility poles, trees, or in the rafters of a building. Fort Campbell’s Challenge Course currently hosts an Alpine Tower, the Carolina T-Wall and an Odyssey course. The Carolina T-Wall sits just shy of 50 feet and has 8 different faces simulating a realistic style of rock climbing. The Alpine Tower, shaped like an hour glass and standing at 50 feet tall, is a vertical obstacle course, where groups will work as a team or individually to ascend the many cargo nets, ropes, poles, and hanging ladders. Attached to the Alpine Tower is the Giants Swing. Using pulleys and cables, groups will lift individuals to a height of 30 feet before being released to a controlled fall/swing. Next, is the low ropes course consisting of many unique challenges, most notably the Team Development Course. Lastly, we offer the largest structure called the Odyssey. This structure is the ideal adult jungle gym. With cargo nets, zip lines, sliding platforms, and cables suspended in mid air, individuals have the opportunity to work by themselves or as teams to traverse from one side to the other. The Challenge Course is an excellent group activity. You could bring your unit for a team building day to work on group cohesion and alternative forms of communication or just to have some fun. There is no better way to build cohesion than to complete a course that involves reliance on team members and confidence in personal strengths. ODR can build just about any program to fit your needs as a group. We are very flexible and want to hear your ideas. You could also gather a group of friends together to climb on our structures for a great workout for physical training purposes. Before you make any reservations feel free to call us to take a tour of the course. This is a great opportunity to ask us questions and get acquainted with what our program has to offer.

In the coming months you can look forward to some new low elements being built on the course. We will be building a wall, islands, and a whale watch. These low elements are a unique way to challenge a group both physically and mentally. For example the whale watch is a large seesaw like structure on which a group of people must work together to balance. Such elements encourage a group to focus on communicating and working together. Participants will come away with a heightened sense of self worth, confidence, and group cohesion all while getting great exercise. Upon request, staff can further challenge the group by blindfolding participants or not allowing them to speak which prompts the group to think creatively and use alternate methods to solve the problems. For more information about the Challenge Course or to plan your group’s event call (270) 412-7855. We look forward to meeting you!

CAUTION: Adventure at Your Own Risk! by Charlene Mazur Growing up a country girl, there were many adventures to be had! The forest, directly behind our summer home, was 40 acres of uninhabited territory! At least that’s what I told myself as I ventured out into the great wilderness! The rapid river that quickly flowed through this jungle seemed so vast and inviting. I wondered where it led as I traveled along its winding banks. Of course I was a child, and everything seemed so big! The actual size of the rapid river, well honestly, it was a babbling little brook that was no more than 6 inches wide, but I knew it led to somewhere huge and wild. Oh how I longed to walk beside that little brook until I found the ocean. As an adult my yearning for adventure is still just a vacation away, and managing Leisure Travel Services helps in finding the next great adventure. Tennessee and surrounding states offer so many different quests; it can be hard to choose. When I received information regarding the Ocoee Adventure Company, I was instantly taken back to those days as a little girl imagining where that rapid river could take me! What is Ocoee Adventure Company? It’s the destination for your next adventure filled with excitement and the thrill of whitewater rafting and everything that the great outdoors has to offer! What better way to spend time with your friends than in the wilderness, battling nature and risking it all on great rapids such as those named Humongous, Godzilla, Table Saw and Hell’s Hole! Don’t settle for the same old amusement park thrill ride that lasts all of 60 seconds, I dare you to try something new. An Ocoee Adventure will leave you with feelings of strength and power. And you will have deemed yourself “King

or Queen of the Rapids” for having conquered the miles and miles of treacherous natural water coasters. If that is just too exciting for you, simply choose another river that is a bit milder. How about a scenic relaxing float trip with some exciting whitewater thrown in? Or perhaps you would prefer to meet in the middle by partaking in an adventure with cascading waterfalls? Adventure sites may offer a biking trails and/or hiking and overnight camping trips. How wonderful it would be to spend time in the painted scenery of America’s canvas designed by Mother Nature where you can view rarely seen waterfalls and breathtaking mountain vistas that are simply awe-inspiring. Ocoee Adventure Company LLC has several locations from which to choose to include Southern Expeditions on the Chattanooga River near Clayton, Georgia, Big Frog Expeditions on the Ocoee River in Benton, Tennessee or Ocoee Adventure Center on the Ocoee River in Copperhill, Tennessee. Each location offers something different so it is up to you to decide which river or landscape you would like to discover. Enhance your adventure by adding a mountain bike adventures, Flatwater Kayak Lake Tours or camping to your trip. Don’t have any equipment? No need to fret, Ocoee Adventures has you covered. Only minimal items such as a sleeping bag may be necessary, but they’ve got the rest, saving you loads of money! Expeditions are guided and safety is always a must, therefore training prior to whitewater rafting is necessary, required and offered before your excursion. Whether you are a first-timer or a self-proclaimed expert I guarantee you will have a good time! Check out the travel/lodging link on the MWR website at www.fortcampbellmwr.com for more information regarding Ocoee Adventure Company LLC. We have plenty of brochures in our Leisure Travel Office located in the PX Mall. Stop in and pick up information to plan your next adventure! Wherever you choose, we’re here for you! Leisure Travel Services is open Monday-Friday, 10am-5pm and Saturdays 9am-3pm.

Springs has sprung and rather than sitting indoors, why not enjoy the outdoors on the back of a horse? Horseback riding on Fort Campbell’s trails isn’t just for the experienced rider. The horse stables on post cater to all types of riders and are happy to educate a beginner on the proper way to ride as well as tips on how to approach and groom horses. The wonderful staff members at the stables are subject matter experts and they make it their mission to offer the best riding encounter possible. Fort Campbell Riding Stabes offers guided trail rides year round and as the warmer months quickly approach, the weather invites all to experience fun, adventurous outdoor activities close to home. Why not try something new and think outside of the box when it comes to choosing plans for the weekend? The pressures of every day life seem to disappear on the back of a horse. If a trail ride doesn’t suit you, come to the stables and spend some time with a nice, quiet horse and simply groom the animal. Most horses love to be groomed and this is a great way to utilize the stables without having to get on the back of a horse right away. Fort Campbell offers over 75 miles of scenic trails. On the stabling property, the facility has one indoor arena as well as a small and large outdoor arena. Trail rides are offered on Wednesday through Friday by reservation only. Scheduled one hour trail rides are available on Saturdays and Sundays at 9am, 10:30am, 1pm and 2:30pm. It is required that all participants arrive 30 minutes prior to each ride and the cost is $20 per hour per person. A Reel Good Time by Tara Goodson Fort Campbell Outdoor Recreation offers several great fishing spots to include two lakes, two stocked trout streams and numerous beaver ponds. Before you venture out to reel in the catch of the day, make sure you have all the requirement documents completed before you bait your hook. You must have a valid fishing license from either Kentucky or Tennessee and a valid post permit to fish. To purchase your permit and license, head on over to Outdoor Recreation’s main building located at 6645 101st Airborne Division Avenue. You can find the fee requirements by calling (270) 798-2175 or by visiting www.fortcampbellmwr.com/Recreation/fishing. Once you have all your permits, you will need to get your area assignment. Outdoor Recreation can take care of this for you, but be sure to get two copies. One copy stays in your vehicle and the second should be kept with you while you fish. Don’t risk a big fine over a little piece of paper. What’s biting? Crappie, catfish, trout, bass and bluegill are all common fish in this region. You can catch and release or keep a few. There are no minimum length requirements for trout (brown or rainbow), bream or catfish. Black bass and crappie have a 10 inch minimum if you want to fry them up. Make sure you don’t exceed the daily limit, no matter how good the fish are biting! May is a great time of year for bream and you can keep up to 25. Last year, a group I was with caught our limit within a few hours, and none were smaller than eight inches. I am not sure if it was the bait we used (live crickets) or the fact that we were all quiet and calm in a popular area for the fish to hang out, but we could have netted our limit easily. I learned quickly not to cast too far out, and to be patient while reeling in my catch. My first casts were…well, let’s just say I hooked a big one, and my friend has the scar to prove it.

If you don’t care for bream, you can hook catfish, bass or even a few trout. Daily limits for crappie and catfish are 10 per person, five for black bass and rainbow trout and two for brown trout. Don’t think you have to make an immediate decision if you want to keep the fish or release it back into the water. Have a cooler or a stringer handy to hold onto your catch. Your possession limit is simply double your daily limit. I wouldn’t want to try to fillet a teeny tiny fish, so hold onto them until you have the largest you want to keep, and then release the rest. A word of caution with stringers, turtles are common here. Check the string often, turtles are opportunistic feeders and can quickly turn your daily limit into an empty net. Nothing worse than looking forward to a fish fry only to end up with an empty growling stomach! If you haven’t checked out the fishing areas here, try a cast or two. For more information about fishing opportunities or license requirements contact Outdoor Recreation at (270) 798-2175 or email outdoors@fortcampbellmwr.com.

READY, AIM, FIRE! Outdoor Recreation Skeet Range by Tess Peterson It is time to get outside and enjoy the weather and Fort Campbell Outdoor Recreation has just the activity for you—Skeet. In case you don’t know what Skeet is, it is a recreational and competitive shooting sport where participants attempt to break clay disks flung into the air at high speeds from a variety of angles. The firearm of choice for this task is usually a high-quality, double-barreled over and under shotgun. The event is in part meant to simulate the action of bird hunting. Sound like fun? The Outdoor Recreation Skeet and Trap Range is open to Soldiers, Families, and the general public. The Skeet Range offers skeet and trap shooting as well as five-stand shooting. If you are new to the

Imagine yourself with the bow strung, focusing on the target yards away. You breathe in and hold steady, then release and success; you hit the target! Who would of thought that a sport like archery could provide such a rush and sense of accomplishment? Fort Campbell is fortunate to have an archery range and an extremely knowledgeable instructor to assist Soldiers with a place to learn and experience the thrill of the sport known as archery. Fort Campbell’s Archery program has been recognized as one of the Army’s best, setting the standard for others to follow. Representatives from other installations as well as the Paralympics Committee have come to observe how Fort Campbell Outdoor Recreation with the help of two time gold winner of the Sunshine Games, and two time silver and bronze Senior Olympic winner Art Petit, run the archery program. In addition to lessons that can be scheduled through appointment, Petit offers archery programs for Warriors in Transition (WT) who are Soldiers with all types of combat related injuries, the Warrior Adventure Quest (WAQ) program, used for reintegration purposes and various special events such as Outdoor Recreation Open Houses.
