Military Spouse Appreciation Day by Iva Pearlstein
First proclaimed in 1984 by President Ronald Reagan to recognize the critical role that spouses play in the readiness and well-being of our nation’s Armed Forces, Military Spouse Appreciation Day was standardized in 1985 as the Friday preceding Mother’s Day by the U.S. Secretary of Defense, Caspar Weinberger. Since then, the President of the United States typically commemorates this day with a ceremonial speech, and proclamation to emphasize the vital role the Military Spouse plays in communities across America and around the world. Military Spouses deserve acknowledgement because they do far more than “sit and wait.” They frequently volunteer for groups – both Military and non-Military – for a variety of reasons. It could be looking to meet new friends with similar interests after yet another move, wanting to stay busy while a Spouse is deployed, or simply having time available because the average unemployment rate for Military Spouses is over 26%. Family Support Groups, nonprofit and religious organizations, schools, libraries and animal shelters are only some of the places where Military Spouses donate their time. Due to deployment and frequent moves, job and career displacement are a burden that the Military Spouse must cope with disproportionately to the American population as a whole. With Military Spouse unemployment above the national average – portable, career-oriented job opportunities are what they need. The Department of Defense (DoD), led by efforts from the White House, has instituted the Military Spouse Employment Partnership (MSEP), which helps connect Military Spouses to jobs. The Partnership’s member companies have pledged to recruit, hire, promote and retain Military Spouses in portable careers. As of 2012, the MSEP has helped more than 22,000 Military Spouses get hired and job postings on the MSEP jobs web portal have approached 500,000 (https://msepjobs.militaryonesource.mil/-webform/becomepartner). Beyond help in finding employment, Military Spouses deserve recognition and support from all Americans for their resilience and service to their country. They are required to frequently move and keep their households running, as well as to manage the stress caused by deployments. And just like their partners in Military service, Military Spouses serve their country on a 3
daily basis -- helping to keep the Armed Forces strong and the country safe. If you know a Military Spouse, thank them for their service. If their Spouse is deployed, ask if they would like to come to dinner. Other ideas include organizing a Ladies or Guys Night Out. Ladies might appreciate a visit to the spa for beauty treatments or massages, crafts, a movie or just a relaxing meal with an opportunity to socialize. Guys might enjoy the chance to view sports on a large flat screen, a good steak dinner or a friendly card game. And if you are one -- Happy Military Spouse Appreciation Day! Don’t Sweat Over Finding Something to Do This Summer by Stephanie G.J. Powell
Summer is almost here, do you have what it takes to survive? Summer means fun but as the temperatures rise and kids are released for summer vacation, parents may struggle to fill their days with Family activities and may find themselves counting down for the first day back to school. Whether you travel or stay close to post, Fort Knox Family and MWR offers plenty of ways to keep those summertime blues in check. Camp Carlson is a great place to get in touch with nature without going too far from home. Three miles from post, the camp has everything a nature enthusiast needs to get away without giving up the creature comforts. Camp Carlson offers scenic walking trails, a large recreational field, cabin and RV slot rentals, picnic areas, a Grand Lodge for hosting events, and tent pitches. A 25-acre state-licensed fishing lake is onsite that’s stocked regularly with catfish, bluegill, crappie and bass. The Equipment Checkout Center (ECC) is a one-stop rental shop for recreational and rental opportunities. Some of the many available rental items include campers and equipment, ski and pontoon boats, canoes, fishing boats, picnic and party supplies, sports equipment, and more! ECC offers information on the best places to fish and camp on and off post. Lawn and garden equipment are also available to spruce up yards this summer. Seeking a simple, budget-friendly day that doesn’t require a lot of preplanning? Take a picnic and spend an afternoon at one of the many parks on post. Keyes Park is located off Chaffee Avenue. Eastman Park, located by Wilson gate, has an all-inclusive boundless playground for children of all abilities and an amphitheater that hosts different festivals and concerts throughout the summer. Even the pooches have their own dog park next to Caruso Sports Complex! Searching for a place to host your next party? Look no further. Falls Landing, Family and MWR’s mini-golf course is the perfect facility with a party room for birthdays, sports celebrations, or for a quick round of
mini-golf. The challenging 18-hole course displays both waterfalls and rock formations. It’s easy on the pocketbook as it’s inexpensive to play a round and groups of 10 or more qualify for a discount. “Dollar Day
Wednesdays” offers a round for just a dollar! Falls Landing is located adjacent to the Fort Knox Water Park. Combo tickets are available for both facilities. Fort Knox has two places that offer refreshing relief from the heat. The Fort Knox Water Park opens Memorial Day weekend and is open all summer. It boasts a 70-foot tube slide, a 70-foot open slide, a water challenge course with floating logs and lily pads, water spouts, a snack bar, and an enclosed toddler area with a wading pool and playground. Anderson Indoor Aquatic Center is open all year long and has water slides, outdoor patios for sunbathing and a newly renovated Splash Town which includes an interactive spray park. Aquatic passes are available offering several options to accommodate your budget. Summer wouldn’t be summer without camps. Child, Youth & School Services and SKIESUnlimited offer events for school age children throughout the summer. There are programs planned for all interests. Visit www.knoxmwr.com for more details. If you have plans to travel this summer, check out the ITR Leisure Travel for travel packages that are discounted for local and distant locations, including popular theme parks, cruises, and hotels. Right Arm Night at Saber & Quill by Stephanie G.J. Powell
Do you have a co-worker, fellow Soldier, or someone that has been helping you get through work’s daily missions, and you are struggling to find a way to show your appreciation for them? If so, treat your ‘right arm’ to this month’s Right Arm Night at the Saber and Quill on May 31 starting at 4 p.m. Right Arm Night, also referred to in the past as “Stable Call,” is a long-standing Army tradition where leaders show gratitude for their Soldier’s hard work by treating their ‘right arm’ to a drink, and down time for off-duty socialization. This informal event allows Soldiers and other Fort Knox community members to relax and socialize at the end of the work week. It also provides the opportunity for leaders to mentor junior Soldiers, while encouraging everyone to partake in the camaraderie, and esprit de corps between Soldiers of all ranks, and Civilians of all pay-grades within the installation. Activities and other things to expect out of a Right Arm Night are always very unceremonious. “It is a good way to unwind and get a great jump-start on your weekend,” said MSG Brandt Kirk, an instructor with ARRTC (Army Reserve Readiness Training Center). MSG Kirk has attended past Right Arm Nights at the Saber & Quill, and refers to the opportunity as being, “not only great for morale… but it also provides a chance to meet with Soldiers from your unit and peers from other units from all over Fort Knox as well.”
knoxmwr.com
Guests of Right Arm Night will also be able to enjoy complimentary hors d'oeuvres, sponsored this month by Bluegrass Cellular. There will also be music and drinks for purchase. Mug Club members are eligible for drink specials. So, come and take a load off while mingling with others from around Fort Knox! Looking for something to do following Right Arm Night? Then you should stay for the Saber & Quill’s Creole and Jazz themed buffet starting at 5 p.m. Enjoy live Jazz music as you dine from a traditional Louisiana seafood broil complete with newspaper liners! Prices are reasonable and space is limited, so make your reservations well in advance. Weather permitting, guests will be able to enjoy the nice evening on the Saber & Quill Verandah. The outdoor patio area sits just outside the Fiddlers Green Bar. It features a beautiful brick frame, seating, and flat screen televisions. Come and enjoy a drink with others and the beautiful May evening outside on the Verandah! For more information on Right Arm Night, or for prices, and to make reservations for the Creole and Jazz Buffet, call Saber & Quill at (502) 942-0959, ext. 210/211 or visit www.knoxmwr.com and use the Family and MWR’s new Service Xpress reservation system!

Deployment Readiness by Iva Pearlstien
“When you miss someone during a deployment it gets easier every day that passes because even though it is one day more from the last time you saw each other, it is one day less until you see each other again.” Deployment presents many challenges to members of the Military and their Family members, and to minimize the accompanying stress – preparation is critical! To help Service Members and their Families prepare for a deployment, the Department of Defense (DoD) offers a wide range of support programs and services in areas from emotional readiness and financial planning to communication strategies and reunion. The Mobilization and Deployment Program operated by Army Community Service (ACS) through Family and MWR at Fort Knox offers resilience training as well as pre- and post-deployment briefings. Information and checklists are provided that make deployment readiness much easier to achieve. Anna Hoop of ACS’s Mobilization and Deployment Program says, “There are so many issues that both single Soldiers and Family members have to consider.” Hoop states that, as part of the pre-deployment training, ACS will provide a folder with a checklist of items that should be organized prior to a deployment. If a Family is involved in a deployment, one very important issue to consider is housing for Family members while the Service Member is away. Living on or near post, Family members have access to the support provided by Military services, programs and healthcare facilities. A Family Readiness Group (FRG) is easily accessible. If the Family chooses to give up quarters on post, it might be difficult to get new housing after the Service Member returns. On the other hand, moving back home to live with parents or other Family can be, not only a financial consideration, but also an emotional one - especially if there are small children involved. Other important issues for both single Soldiers and Families include organizing financial and legal matters during a deployment. Access to bank accounts might have to be changed and organized in advance. Power of Attorney (POA) will most likely be necessary for legal matters that might need to be handled while the Soldier is away, and can be assigned on a limited basis. Advice and guidance can be obtained from the Fort Knox office of the Staff Judge Advocate (JAG), and they offer a
pre-deployment briefing with paralegals on-site for consultations. FRGs can be of enormous value to Families involved in a deployment. Ally Reese, Family Readiness Support Assistant (FRSA), described some of the options for Family members to receive support and information through FRGs during a deployment. “Limited to deploying units, is the Army wide eArmy Family messaging system used by FRGs to disseminate information. Other outlets include Facebook pages, newsletters and meetings.” Planning, in advance, just how you will stay in contact can make the emotional strain of separation much easier to bear, especially where children are concerned. Having a doll or cardboard image that represents the deployed Service Member at Family events can help make the absence easier to bear. Decide what equipment the Service Member should have in order to stay involved in Family life. The Family and MWR Blue Star Card is a discount and activities program for Army Spouses and Families of deployed Soldiers. Discounts for Family and MWR facilities can be obtained with the card. Childcare benefits through Child, Youth & School Services (CYSS) are a further advantage offered through the program. To enroll in the program, those that qualify can bring deployment orders and an ID card to the Fort Knox Water Park on June 1 from 2-6 p.m. for a special event that will include music, free food and prizes. For more information on the Blue Star Card Program, visit www.knoxmwr.com.

many video games or visit the full-service snack bar for food and drinks. It can be a challenge to find places equipped to hold groups of individuals for birthday parties, team parties, Family Readiness Group functions, or Hail and Farewells. The Sadowski Center will be available for rent as the entire facility holds 225 people. In addition, the center has three party rooms available to rent for smaller groups. Look for party packages and different themed skate nights for teens, youth, and more. Shaunte Quaine, the Sadowski Center manager, is excited about the multi-purpose flexibility of the center. “In addition to regular skating, the facility will also provide a venue for official functions, such as deployment and re-deployment staging areas and change of commands.” The Sadowski Center will charge one flat fee for entrance and rentals with unlimited skating. Heather Ostlund, Family Readiness Advisor for 3/1 IBCT, is thrilled with what the Sadowski Center has to offer. “Our Spouses are always looking for ways to entertain their children or for fun places to host Family Readiness Group activities. The center will be opening in time to benefit our Families during the deployment.” The Sadowski Center promises to be an awesome recreational facility with the capability to host official functions. Keep your eye out for Grand Opening information and get ready to roll on over to the newest facility on Fort Knox!

Author and journalist, Tanya Biank, discusses and signs her newest book, Undaunted: The Real Story of America’s Servicewomen in Today’s Military, as part of Barr Library’s Authors at Your Library series on Thursday, May 9 at 6:00 PM. Undaunted discusses the challenges, both personal and professional, that women serving in the Military today confront. Over 14% of today’s active duty Military is female, with nearly 250,000 serving since the terrorist attacks of 9/11. Biank addresses many topics, such as career, Family, self-worth, and life goals - through the stories of four individuals. Biank’s first book, Army Wives, is the basis for the long-running Lifetime cable television series of the same name. She serves as a consultant on the series. Biank is an Army wife and Army brat, previously posted to several Army posts both foreign and abroad. As a journalist, she covered the 2002 Army wife murders that occurred at Fort Bragg. Her work led to congressional inquiries and changes in Army policy. Her work has appeared in print publications as diverse as The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. She has appeared on national television and radio programs and networks such as, Good Morning America, CNN, ABC News, and NPR. Biank is a Fulbright Scholar and graduate of Penn State, where she received a bachelor’s degree in journalism. She was recognized in 2009 as Penn State’s College of Communication’s Outstanding Alumni. Copies of both Army Wives and Undaunted will be available the evening of the event. National Book Award winner and Pulitzer Prize finalist Nathaniel Philbrick will discuss Bunker Hill: A City, A Siege, A Revolution as part of Barr Memorial Library’s Authors at Your Library series on Armed Forces Day, Saturday, May 18 at 3:00 PM. In Bunker Hill, Philbrick, winner of the National Book Award for In The Heart of the Sea, and Pulitzer Prize finalist for Mayflower, focuses on the crucial Boston battle which ignited the American Revolution. With famous historical figures at the periphery of his narrative, Bunker Hill brings attention to lesser known historical figures – patriots, loyalists and British Military figures – as Philbrick explains both the causes and repercussions of the 1775 battle. On Wednesday, May 1 at 11:00 AM, the Library’s Lunch Bunch Book Discussion Group will discuss The Last Stand, in which Philbrick tells the tale of Colonel George Armstrong Custer’s infamous battle with the Lakota, Northern Cheyenne and Arapaho Native American tribes at the Little Bighorn. Among Philbrick’s other books are Away Off Shore: Nantucket Island and Its People, Sea of Glory and Why Read Moby-Dick? Philbrick holds a bachelor’s degree in English from Brown University and a Master of Arts in American Literature from Duke University. He also worked for four years at Sailing World magazine. Copies of Bunker Hill, as well as Philbrick’s other titles, will be available for sale at the event. For further information, contact the Library at (502) 624-1232.
