Gardening tip:

By now, you should be enjoying the fruits of your gardening labor. However, if you are reading this and haven’t planted a seed, it is not too late. Most garden stores, nurseries, and home centers offer seedlings and plants that already have a head start and are very easy to transplant. If you think that space is an issue, not to worry. Many flowers and vegetables can be grown easily in patio pots. Even if you only have a small outdoor space, you can still have a garden. Plant lettuce seeds in organic potting soil in your deck planter, grow tomatoes in a large pot, or buy one of the ones that you can hang on your patio. These planters and pots can also be elevated for ease of use if you have difficulty or are unable to bend and reach. There are so many options available! Even if you think your thumb is brown rather than green, give it a try. Seed packets can often be purchased for a dollar or less and planting can be as simple as sprinkling them into a pot or patch of ground. Visit a nursery, garden center, or botanical garden. Walk around and get ideas. If nothing else, the fresh air and beauty will inspire you to think green!

et ready for five weeks of fun and excitement for Children with the Robert F. Sink Memorial Library’s Summer Reading Program.

Once again, the post library will host this event on Thursdays in the month of July at 9 a.m. Designed to run for one hour, the Summer Reading Program will take place on July 1, 8, 15 and 22. The reading series ends with a pizza party at Dale Wayrynen Recreation Center on July 29. The program is open to children ranging in age from starting kindergarten to starting fourth grade. They are organized in groups according to their grade. Each week they have story time, do a craft and enjoy refreshments before checking out books. Each child is limited to three titles per week to ensure that an adequate number of books are on hand for all children.

Participation in the program is entirely free. Each child who either reads ten books or has ten books read to them receives a Summer Reading Program certificate at the pizza party. Nashville clown and magician Scott Tripp will entertain party attendees. Jan Daugherty, long-time Summer Reading Program coordinator says,

“Reading is fundamental. Reading changes lives. Our Summer Reading Program is important because it keeps kids’ reading skills up to speed during the summer months. It also introduces little ones to the concept that it’s fun to go to the library!” Registration starts on June 1 and runs through June 25. For additional information, please call (270) 798-5729.

hildren love celebrating birthdays. We celebrate the birthdays of things and people that we love; things that are important to us.

In our daily lives at Child, Youth and School Services (CYSS) on Fort Campbell, we recognize the deep impact the Army has on us, the freedoms that give us comfort, the jobs that we have, and the children that we love. None of these things are possible without our Army. What better way to celebrate our love for the Army than to celebrate the Army Birthday! On June 14, CYSS will take the day and celebrate! Children will be eating and sharing cake and ice cream with parents, reading the story of the Army birthday, baking and designing their own

www.fortcampbellmwr.com

versions of the Army birthday cake, drawing pictures of Army Birthday celebrations, writing/producing Army rap songs and learning a little bit of Army history. This is a day CYSS celebrates because we love and support the mission of our Soldiers and the Army. We want the children and youth of CYSS, from infants to teenagers, to be a part of this celebration. In a way, we are paying tribute to the children and Families that make up the Army. Celebrating the birthday is a time to thank parents and children for what they do for us and the sacrifices they make. They are what make us who we are and they are

the reason we do what we do every day. For our children and Families, the Army is their every day way of life. Taking a day out to celebrate brings into perspective how fortunate we are for what the Army has done for Families and continues to do for the future. In the words of Michael Montague, age 9, 3301 School Age Services (SAS) site, “We celebrate the Army birthday to show appreciation for the Army because they serve our country and it celebrates my Mom and Dad.” I think that says it all. Happy 235th Birthday Army!

By Melissa Wells With all of the rain and warm weather that comes with summer, we are surrounded by green. Gardens are sprouting up everywhere and it is prime time for fresh produce and ingredients to make delicious salads and other bold and flavorful dishes. When you grow or buy local, fresh ingredients, you can really taste the difference. Buying local and growing even a

small garden also helps the environment by reducing the fuels required for packaging and transportation. Additionally, the flavor of something picked fresh from the garden is unsurpassed. With all of these ideas in mind, I asked Chef Bob to dig up some of his tastiest, fresh from the garden dishes to bring the outdoors in and the flavor of the

garden to the table. Spring and summer vegetables offer an endless variety of food ideas that go far beyond the average salad. Chef Bob has given us some great ideas, but remember to think outside the box, taste the vegetables and use their flavors to your advantage. After all, fresh is best!

Medley Salad Vegetable Omelet ½ cup chopped onion 1 cup fresh sliced mushroom ¼ cup chopped green pepper ¼ cup chopped red pepper 2 Tbsp butter or margarine ½ cup chopped, seeded tomato 4 eggs, beaten 2 Tbsp milk 2 slices cheese Hot pepper sauce (optional) Sauté onions, mushrooms, and peppers in a 10 inch skillet using 1 Tbsp butter over medium heat until tender. Stir in tomatoes and hot pepper sauce and remove from skillet. Melt remaining butter in skillet Mix together eggs and milk and pour into prepared skillet. As egg mixture sets, lift slightly with spatula to allow uncooked portion to flow underneath. When egg mixture is set, but the top is still moist, place vegetables and cheese on half of the omelet and gently fold in half. Yields 2 servings.

4 oz. Fresh green beans cut into 1 inch pieces (approx. 1 cup) 1 cup sliced carrots 2 medium green and/or sweet red peppers cut into inch squares 1 small summer squash thinly sliced 1/2 cup whole pitted ripe olives 1/4 cup vinegar 2 Tbsp salad oil or olive oil 2 cloves garlic, minced 1/2 tsp dried oregano, crushed 1/2 cup coarsely crumbled feta cheese

Cook beans in boiling, salted water for 5 minutes, covered, add carrots and cook for another 7 – 9 minutes or until crisp tender. Rinse vegetables under cold water and drain. In a large mixing bowl, combine cooked vegetables with peppers, summer squash, and olives. In a screw-top jar, combine vinegar, oil, garlic, and oregano and shake well. Toss the dressing mixture with the vegetables, cover and refrigerate for 4 – 24 hours. Stir before serving.

Italian Grilled Vegetables Vegetable Turkey Pockets 1/2 cup mayonnaise or salad dressing 1/2 cup Italian dressing 2 zucchini cut in half lengthwise 2 summer squash cut in half lengthwise 2 red, green or yellow peppers cut into quarters Preheat electric broiler or grill and mix together dressings until well blended. Lightly score cut sides of vegetables and brush with the salad dressing mixture. Place vegetables, salad dressing side up, on broiler pan or grill and broil approx 6 minutes. Turn and brush the other side with the salad dressing mixture. Continue broiling for 6 minutes or until vegetables are tender.

By Tess Peterson The U.S. Army Soldier Show is back with its best version yet! The Soldier Show presents entertainment for the Soldier, by the Soldier. The show features 90 minutes of high-energy, live musical performances by Active, Guard and Reserve Soldiers. These talented Soldiers dance, sing and perform today’s hits, yesterday’s classics and original material. Admission is free, and all are welcome to attend

the Family friendly event. The U.S. Army Soldier Show is coming to Fort Campbell’s Wilson Theater on June 5 with performances at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., and June 6 at 2 p.m. This year's show features three performers from Fort Campbell and the surrounding area. PFC Jeremy Gaynor, 72nd Medical Detachment, Fort Campbell, KY; SPC Demetria Stewart, a graduate of Clarksville High School in Tennessee, is an animal care specialist stationed in San Antonio, and PFC Andrew Clouse, a 2008 graduate of Davies County High School in Owensboro, KY, currently serving in Fort Gordon, GA. The 2010 U.S. Army Soldier Show showcases the talents of Soldiers selected each year by audition from throughout the Army. They are amateur artists who have a passion for music, dance and performing. They come from unit supply, medical and emergency, animal care, transportation and aviation, legal and law enforcement and other tactical units. The 2010 U.S. Soldier Show features a rigorous schedule of 101 performances at 53 venues, including eight stops in Germany. Soldier Show Production Director Victor Hurtado said, “When I hear them sing together, it’s like the most glorious choir…People are going to be just shocked by how good they are.”

The show will open with Disturbed’s heavy metal anthem “Indestructible,” which was written to inspire Soldiers headed for battle. “It’s meant to be something that would make them feel invincible, take away their fear, make them strong,” Disturbed lead vocalist David Draiman said. As always, the troops will deliver several genres of music and dance, complete with Soldier-musicians on guitar, bass, keyboard and drums, and, of course, there’s a tribute to the late Michael Jackson. The 2010 U.S. Army Soldier Show is sponsored by two premier sponsors: the U.S. Army G-1's Sexual Harassment/Assault Response & Prevention (SHARP) Program and the U.S. Army's Comprehensive Soldier Fitness (CSF) Program. Don’t miss out on this amazing performance. And remember, you haven’t seen this show before – it changes every year! Mark your calendar for June 5 and 6. By Charlene Mazur When I visited Walt Disney World and Universal Studios Orlando, my daughter had one mission and my son had another. My daughter wanted to meet and greet every Disney Princess and my son wanted to do the same with each Marvel Superhero. MWR Leisure Travel Services has put together amazing Walt Disney World and Universal Studios Orlando vacations for several Fort Campbell Families, and I know from experience that there is much to see and do at both resorts. Fortunately, MWR Leisure Travel Services has put together an amazing event that will bring both Disney Princesses and Marvel Superheroes together here at Fort Campbell! MWR Leisure Travel Services will be presenting a Character Brunch on Saturday, July 17, 2010 from 10:30 a.m. - 2 p.m. at the Cole Park Commons Grand Ball Room. The Character Brunch will have several replicas of characters that reflect those featured at Walt Disney World, Disneyland, and
