Paws to Summer Reading Program By Michael Steinmacher

Readers who take a moment and “Paws to Read” this summer can participate in Barr Memorial Library’s 2014 Summer Reading programs. As in the past, there is a program for children (ages 0 - 12), teens (ages 13-17) and adults (18 and older). The children’s and teen events take place between June 7 and July 18, while the adult program runs from June 2 through August 30. Reading is at the heart of all three programs, with special incentives and grand prizes (awarded through random drawings) making it even more fun. There are family friendly events and events that appeal to specific age groups.

The children’s program encourages youngsters to complete a log by reading (or being read to) 12 hours. Those reaching that goal will have a chance at a grand prize, which will be randomly awarded from those who complete the program. Children completing additional logs will increase his/her chance at winning the grand prize. There are four age classifications as a part of the children’s program: Ages 0-3, 46, 7-9, 10-12. Everyone completing the program will receive a prize bag for his/her efforts. There will be weekly Story Hour programs on Tuesdays at 10 a.m., in addition to many exciting special events. Those programs, which will take place at Devers Middle School & Teen Center on Wednesdays, will include programs where participants can learn about and see live animals from all over the world, explore the world of chimpanzees, meet and see Military Working Dogs, and participate in a petting zoo on the Library’s front lawn. The teen program, for ages 13 to 17, allows participants to customize his or her experience. Teens must read five books, magazines, or graphic novels and complete four other optional tasks, which include: post a three paragraph book review on the Library’s Facebook page; reading three more books; drawing an alternate cover for a favorite book; or attending a

The program for adults is similar in format to the teen program. Adults must read or listen to three books and complete five optional programs from a list of events. Included in those optional programs are an opportunity to read two more books; earn credit for attending Authors at Your Library programs (which will include three with New York Times bestselling authors); participate in the Library’s book discussion; or attend the annual Family and MWR summer

Summer Reading program or Authors at Your Library program. Like the children’s program, teens completing the tasks will receive a bag of “Paws to Read” incentives, along with a chance to win a grand prize. Teen activities will take place on Thursdays from 3-5 p.m. and include making pet beds out of sweatshirts, creating a dinosaur planter, socktopuses, and animal push pins/magnets. Those completing the teen program will also have a chance to participate in an exclusive after-hours teen event on July 18.

concert. Those completing the program will receive an incentive bag and be placed in a drawing for a randomly awarded grand prize. There’s a special opportunity for adults to triple their chance at winning by collecting files from LibraryBoxes, virtual library information points, which are scattered across the installation. Fort Knox Summer Concert Presents Two Country Superstars

Darius Rucker and Jennifer Nettles By Tracy Whitaker

Country superstars, Darius Rucker and Jennifer Nettles with special guest Brandy Clark, will take the stage during the 14th annual Fort Knox Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation Summer Concert Series on August 30 at the Godman Army Airfield. Darius Rucker first attained multi-platinum status as the lead singer and rhythm guitarist of Hootie & the Blowfish. Since re-introducing himself to the world as a country artist, Rucker has had a truly remarkable few years. In 2008, he released “Learn to Live”. The album’s first single, “Don’t Think I Don’t Think About It,” made him the first African American with a Number One country song since Charley Pride in 1983. It was followed by two more singles that topped the chart - “It Won’t Be Like This For Long” and “Alright” – and earned him the New Artist award from the County Music Association. His 2010 follow-up album “Charleston, SC 1966”, included two more Number Ones, “Come Back Song” and “This.” In October 2012, Rucker achieved a childhood dream when he was inducted into the Grand Ole Opry. Asked if he can believe the unprecedented success of his second career, Rucker just laughs. “From where I was five years ago to the Grand Ole Opry, why would I believe that?” he asks. “I didn’t even know if country radio was going to play my song, but you can’t think about things like that.” Jennifer Nettles, lead vocalist for international super duo Sugarland, has become one of the most popular singer-songwriters in music today. Since Sugarland exploded onto the music scene in 2004, they have worldwide sales of over 22 million to date, have achieved eight No. 1 singles and have won numerous awards including trophies from the Grammys, AMAs, ACM Awards, CMT Music Awards, and CMA Awards. Nettles has been seen all over the media spectrum, with performances ranging from President Barack Obama’s inauguration celebration to Oprah, Good Morning America, Ellen, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and CNN Heroes, among others. Her fans have grown to expect Nettles to deliver memorable, heartfelt performances. Nettles and her Sugarland partner Kristian Bush have performed in knoxmwr.com

numerous European countries and have headlined multiple U.S. tours that continue to sell out venues across the country. Get your tickets early and save money! Tickets go on sale June 26 for only $35 until July 6. Tickets will cost $45 from July 7 – August 29. The cost of a ticket will be $50 the day of the show at the gates. Blue Star Card holders can purchase tickets anytime for $35. Tickets can be purchased at Ticketmaster.com, the ITR Leisure Travel Office or through Service Xpress on www.knoxmwr.com. “Ticket prices are so reasonable. As we have in the past years, we are proud to again bring a quality show to the Fort Knox and surrounding communities on August 30,” notes Mark Wicker, Chief, Community Recreation Division. “You can’t go to many places to enjoy two nationally recognized artists at a user-friendly venue for such a discounted price.” Quick, easy, safe and secure entrance onto post will be available through Chaffee and Wilson Gates only with a photo ID required for those 16 years of age and older. Guests who will be riding motorcycles must wear protective gear that includes a helmet. Free concert parking will be available on Godman Army Airfield and will open at 4 p.m. Gates to the concert will open at 5:30 p.m. Opening act will begin at 6:30 p.m. The venue is a set up for festival-style seating and chairs and blankets are allowed. Food and beverage vendors will be on-site for convenience. Coolers and other containers of any kind are not permitted. Cameras and other recordings devices are prohibited. MWR would like to thank its major sponsors of the event: Nolin RECC, The Swope Family of Dealers, Fort Knox Credit Union, Harshaw Trane, Brown-Forman, Bluegrass Cellular, and Budweiser for their support of the annual Fort Knox Summer Concert. Is the outdoors calling your name in a faint whisper only meant for your ears to hear? The Fort Knox Outdoor Adventure Program can help you answer that call with the newly developed program called Women of the Wilderness. This adventure is geared towards women allowing them get out and to experience the opportunities created by Mother Nature. This program was designed especially for beginners and women of all ages to get in touch with their wild side.

The Women of the Wilderness program consists of four introductory classes held every Tuesday in June. The classes will cover trap/skeet shooting at the French Range Shooting Club, mountain biking on some of the challenging trails on Fort Knox, rock climbing at Smith Physical Fitness Center, and camping basics to accommodate all skill levels which will be held at Eastman Park. Classes will begin at the Hansen Community Center and will venture out into the wilderness as the classes progress. "I am providing the Women of the Wilderness program to get women to step outside of their comfort zone without being judged by men participating. I hope they take away a new skill or activity needed for adventure and to have fun," states Ryan Noble, Fort Knox Adventure Program Coordinator. Women should wear comfortable attire according to the agenda of each class. If you’re not sure what to bring, an equipment check-list will be given at the start of the first class. Each class will run every Tuesday in June from 6 – 8 p.m. The total cost for all four classes is $20 for the month. Registration is required by May 30 by visiting www.knoxmwr.com and using Service Xpress. Summertime is here and the outdoors is the prime playing arena. Don’t let anything stand in your way! Ladies, it’s time to add a little sense of accomplishment and adventure to the list!

PTSD Awareness By Kerry Weintraub Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) occurs when an individual experiences or witnesses a traumatic event in which he or she has an overwhelming feeling of fear for one’s own life or for the life of someone close to them. In 2010, Congress declared June 27 as National PTSD Awareness Day. Since the 2010 declaration, people are asked to help raise PTSD Awareness during the whole month of June. Through raising awareness, people will hopefully gain insight and a better understanding of PTSD with hopes of decreasing the negative stigma that has been associated with PTSD. According to the National Center for PTSD, seven or eight individuals out of every 100 may experience PTSD at some point during his or her life. Studies have also shown that women are more likely to develop PTSD than men.

psychologist, and even a psychiatrist, I regained control, I learned what my triggers are, tools and skills necessary to overcome PTSD, and have learned to live again with PTSD being a part of my life. It took time and effort, but now today, I hold a full time position, just finished my Bachelors Degree, and am continuing on to get my Masters Degree. I share this because there is a light at the end of the tunnel - even though it seems dark and scary, and the end so far away. The most important thing is to not be ashamed of thinking you may have PTSD. Talk with someone, have a support system of friends and Family, be honest with your counselor or therapist, use the tools and skills that they teach you, and know that you can gain strength from it and in turn help others experiencing PTSD.

In most cases, PTSD is associated with Service Members who have experienced combat. It is true that there are a large number of Service Members who do experience PTSD shortly after the event or upon arrival home from a deployment. However, PTSD is not only present in those who have seen or experienced combat, anyone who has experienced or witnessed a traumatic event can present with PTSD. Young and old, male or female, there is no distinction in who can develop PTSD. It is also important to understand that not everyone who experiences or witnesses a traumatic event will develop PTSD. Symptoms of PTSD include reliving the event or re-experiencing the event through memories or nightmares, avoidance of similar situations that may be a reminder or a trigger, negative changes in self perception and not wanting to participate in activities that previously were enjoyable, increased anxiety and or hyper arousal which causes problems concentrating and sleeping. Other problems that are sometimes associated with PTSD are depression, anxiety, drug or alcohol use, feeling hopeless, guilty, or ashamed. Physical symptoms such as chronic pain can occur. Not seeking help can and eventually will cause employment issues and, more often than not, relationship issues which could lead to divorce. Do you know someone like a friend, Family member, or maybe even yourself who may be experiencing PTSD? By just observing someone you may or may not be able to identify that the individual has PTSD. It is generally those that have a close relationship to the individual that will see and identify the signs and symptoms first and, in some cases, before their loved one has identified the signs and symptoms for themselves. It is important that everyone gains an understanding of what PTSD is and understand that not all individuals with PTSD are going to act out in violence or participate in criminal behavior. Seeking help and being open and honest about what is going on in one’s head is the first step to gaining control of one’s life, and getting a grasp of what is truly happening. I can recall when I went through a traumatic event a few years ago, panic and anxiety attacks began, isolation took over; fear, worry, and high levels of anxiety controlled my life. I knew I had to seek help as I had three children to take care of at home. After many sessions with social work services, a knoxmwr.com

According to Dr. Prudence Zollinger, a social worker in the Behavioral Health Department of Ireland Army Hospital, there are many resources available to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of PTSD. The VA has support groups for female veterans. Also, Social Work Services is located in Bldg. 1480 on 12th Armor Division Road on the third floor. Social Work Services provides services to Service Members and their Families experiencing PTSD-related issues. Dr Zollinger explained that female Service Members experiencing PTSD present differently than male Service Members, and the anniversary of the negative wartime experiences can be a bad time for the Service Member. Shorty after Service Members retire is also another time in which PTSD seems to develop or signs and symptoms are more prominent due to the change in pace in their lives causing more time to reflect on what they have been through during their time in service. Dr. Zollinger has been working in the social work field for over 50 years has helped numerous Service Members and their Families to learn coping skills and other tools necessary to regain control of their lives and to help dependents to understand what the Service Member is going through. OH Fudge!!! By Ashley Bills

You’ve heard the terms “fudged,” “fudging,” or even “oh, fudge!” But what does the word fudge really mean? According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, the word fudge means “to change something in order to trick people;” “to devise as a substitute;” or “to falsify.” So, imagine a sweet confection made of sugar, butter, milk, and chocolate given a name with such a negative connotation. It is believed the sweet treat fudge was invented by accident when a batch of caramel failed and the botched batch was dubbed fudge. Today there are many varieties and flavors of fudge and has become an American favorite. There is even a day set aside just for fudge. This year, National Fudge Day is celebrated on June 16. Although the history of fudge is incomplete, there are bits and pieces that have been put together to shape this delectable treat. A letter that dates back to 1886 puts Emelyn Battersby Hartdridge at the scene where she reports a fellow schoolmate's cousin made this soft candy and sold it for 40 cents a pound. Two years later, Hartridge made 30 pounds of fudge for the Vassar College Senior Auction and is considered the originator of the fudge “recipe.” After the auction, this sweet confection spread like wildfire circulating from college to college and into a national indulgence.

fudge, but for the entertainment they provide as well. The Fudgemakers deliver songs and smiles every hour in order to captivate their audiences. The show begins with copper kettles and marble mixing tables while show-stopping tunes are sung to onlookers and continues with a unique mix of singing and showmanship. “The Fudgery cultivates a ‘whistle while you work’ attitude," states Ryan Hornung, The Fudgery Manager. The Fudgery makes about 70 pounds of fudge daily in 15 different flavors. While chocolate nut is the original Family recipe, the number one seller is chocolate peanut butter. The Fudgery will offer a buy two pieces, get the third for free special in honor of National Fudge Day. Additionally, all Military receive a 15% discount making the deal even sweeter.

Many local stores create fudge and add their own twist to the process. The Fudgery of downtown Louisville draws crowds for not only their delicious

The “Original” Fudge Recipe from Emelyn B. Hartridge of Vassar College: Ingredients: 2 cups granulated white sugar 1 cup cream 2 ounces unsweetened chocolate, chopped 1 tablespoon butter

Directions: Combine sugar and cream and cook over moderate heat. When this becomes very hot, add the chocolate. Stir constantly. Cook until mixture reaches soft-boil stage (234 – 238 degrees F.) Remove from heat and add butter. Cool slightly and then mix until fudge starts to thicken. Transfer to a buttered tin. Cut into diamond-shaped pieces before fudge hardens completely.
